The Buick Regal is an upscale mid-sized automobile that was first introduced by Buick for the 1973 model year. North American production ended in 2004 and began again in 2011. For the 2011 model year, Buick re-introduced the Regal to the North American market, positioned as an upscale sports sedan.[1] Production and sales in China have continued since 1999.
In February 1982, the Regal Grand National debuted, which was named for the NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National Series (the "Grand National" term was part of the Cup series nomenclature until 1986).[6] Buick had won the Manufacturers Cup in 1981 and 1982, and wanted to capitalize on its success: "What wins on Sunday, sells on Monday". These 1982 cars were not painted black, which may confuse those not familiar with them. All started out as charcoal gray Regals that were shipped off to a subcontractor for finishing. For the final year, 1987, Buick introduced the limited production GNX, for "Grand National Experimental", at $29,900. Made in partnership with McLaren Performance Technologies/ASC, Buick produced only 547 GNs with the interior trim package, that were then sent off to McLaren and upgraded into the Buick GNX. Buick underrated the GNX at 276 hp (280 PS; 206 kW) at 4400 rpm and a very substantial 360 lb⋅ft (488 N⋅m) at 3000 rpm of torque,[9] although actual output is 300 bhp (304 PS; 224 kW) and 420 lb⋅ft (569 N⋅m).[10] This was created to be the "Grand National to end all Grand Nationals." Changes made included a special Garrett AiResearch T-3 turbocharger with a ceramic-impeller blowing through a more efficient and significantly larger capacity intercooler with a "Cermatel (ceramic-aluminum) coated" pipe connecting the intercooler to the engine. A GNX specific E-EPROM, low-restriction exhaust with dual mufflers, reprogrammed turbo Hydramatic 200-4R transmission with a custom torque converter and transmission cooler, and unique differential cover/Panhard bar included more of the performance modifications. Exterior styling changes include vents located on each front fender, 16 inch black mesh style wheels with VR-speed rated tires, and deletion of the hood and fender emblems. The interior changes of the GNX included a serial number on the dash plaque and a revised instrument cluster providing Stewart-Warner analog gauges,[11] including an analog turbo boost gauge. Performance was measured faster than the Ferrari F40 and the Porsche 930 with a 1⁄4 mile (402 m) time of 12.7 seconds at 113.1 mph (182 km/h) (0.3 and 0.8 seconds quicker, 2.9 and 13.3 mph (21 km/h) faster) and a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time of 4.6 seconds (0.4 and 0.3 seconds quicker, respectively).[12] GNX #001 is the 1986 prototype currently owned by Buick and sometimes makes appearances at car shows around the US. The GNX used a unique torque arm that was mounted to a special, GNX only, rear differential cover, for increased traction. The torque arm rear suspension alters the suspension geometry, making the body lift while planting the rear tires down, resulting in increased traction. The stealthy appearance of the all-black GNX and Grand National (and the resemblance of its grill to his helmet's mouthpiece), coupled with the fact that the Grand National was initially released during the popularity of Star Wars movies, earned it the title "Darth Vader's Car". Car and Driver covered the GNX model's introduction with the headline "Lord Vader, your car is ready." Due to the turbocharged six cylinder engine, the Buick make, and the black paint Grand Nationals were sometimes referred to as the "Dark Side". The "Dark Side" contrasted with the more common V8 Mustangs and Camaros that were popular at the time.
You always make me miss my old rides.....with these beautiful builds...... thank you so much!!
Thank you John!
these are one of my favorite cars. my first car in the mid 90's was a light briar brown 84 regal. I used this kit and built it like my real regal. I had to send out the bumpers to be chromed. I still remember my mom saying you spent $10 on that! I said but, mom I had to! I used touch up paint for the body and masking tape for the vinyl roof. my real car did not have the turbo, rims or, the hood bulge. I used them anyways on the build. not completely accurate but, close enough for me. I still have the model in my display case. it reminds me of my mom every time I look at it.
Cool!
tconside my favorite 90’s car is a grand national black murdered out with the lightning shift
I'm with you, Chris. I absolutely love this era of Buick Regals. I remember when the turbo V6 was dropped into the GMC Syclone and Typhoon. Those were FAST!
Yeah turbo'd 4.3, even made the GNXs look slow.
I had the privilege of ridding shotgun in a Syclone. I can tell you first hand they can achieve triple digit speeds without breaking a sweat. GM purposely underrated the horsepower. GM claimed they were putting out 285 but they were actually putting out 330
Nice grand national
@@hpiguy the plastic it's a haré plastic?, or soft easy to break with just looking it?
Syclone and typhoon had a 4.3L turbo. Not the same engine.
I still have my GN I bought new. Retired it just for weekend run or car shows. It gets more attention now then it ever did. A must have and build kit for me!
Thanks and enjoy your hobby!

This car is “murdered out,” as they say (all black) . Great detail in the engine and interior! Model roundup is using your Petty build too in the e mail I received ...a star is born 👍
Thanks Eric!
I still have this kit from when it was originally released back in the early 90's.
You should put your kit together soon . I just reopened the hobby after a 23 year break and my results were very rewarding and I didn’t have to watch TV with my wife. I’m loving it again hope you can too my friend.
U selling it
It's like ESP.. I was just checking this one out in the e-mail that I got from Model Roundup and thinking that I have to get one :) Love how this one turned out... black beauty!
Thanks man!
Had an 1982 Buick Regal and always dreamed of getting a GNX... beautiful build brother.
Thanks Sam!
My old boss had one of these, I loved that car! I may have to pick this one up! Great build!
Thanks!
As the owner of a 87GN great job!!!!
Thanks man!
Love it...the under the hood detail is amazing
Thanks, enjoy!
DUDE, your music ALWAYS sets the tone to each video. Absolutely love how this one turned out, gave me some ideas for mine!
Thanks Jeff! Enjoy yours!
This was a joy to watch. I’ve built one before and I have another waiting in its box for when I get time. A lot of nice little tips and some I already use. Thank you for this video. Looks great!
Who would thought a little V-6 could run like that! Another one for my bucket list. Problem is the bucket list is getting huge. LOL
My first model kit I built when I was a kid was a Revell kit, DC-7 American Airlines, used Revell type S tube glue back then.
They sure did scoot. Thanks!
A black on black scale model car that looks FANTASTIC. The basics, when followed, pay off BIG. Very nice Chris, very.
Thank you for sharing...
Thank you much RA!
I've got a model kit of this car that I bought back in 2000 and i didn't put it together until 2006..sharp car 😊😊👍👍
Right on!
Pre-ordered a while back, I miss the old "Monogram High-performance series"
I believe it came with a bit of wiring in the kit, your build is awesome
Thanks Joe!
thanks for the video i got mine ordered and on the way can't wait to build one
Enjoy!
What a slick looking ride. Older cars had so much character to them. Today it’s all about aero and light weight. Great build.
Thanks Rich!
Great review and build chris, i remember at the time when they were testing this car and that it out ran a Porsche 911, great looking spray booth too has sort of a patina look to it!😃👍
Thanks Glen, she's got dozens and dozens of paint layers these days!
Just got my kit today! Can't wait to build
Hope you enjoy it!
Incredible black finish Chris, very well done!! Excellent engine details also!!
Thanks Ron, I love the engine on this kit!
Holy cow that's Awesome Chris! Turned out Absolutely Beautiful! Great job!
Thanks a bunch!
Extremely good points on the painting! The use of clear and differing layers of color to help in the sheen and shading is right on. Really enjoyed watching this video. Thank you so much!
Thanks bud!
Great build! This thing is siiiick! Growing up in the 80s this was one of my fav performance cars. Iroc z, monte carlo, mustang great rides! Awesome job on the body paint! Black is the hardest to do. It shows every imperfection but you nailed it! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for coming along for the ride!
Beautiful model, awesome car, superb assembly and detailing. I remember hearing about a blue printed GNX engine goes for 10s of thousands of dollars. Probably an urban legend. Great kit. Looks great. I would build the GNX. Added to the queue...
There is a huge collector market for the GNs and GNXs so it doesn't surprise me. Thanks!
This is so awesome to see you could build whichever variant out of the box. I have both monogram kits, The GNX was part of a high performace series that came with plug wires in the box. One thing I see new to the decal sheet is the are the seat inserts, but all the markings were there from before. A friend of mine told me that there used to be a photo etched kit for these cars.
Enjoy!
Awesome job. I lived in Dalton GA when these cars came out. Our dealer had 3 of them on his lot. Dorsey Buick. Great old days.
Cool Mark!

I got this kit way back in 1989
Still have it, unbuilt, but got a new decal sheet from Revell a few years ago.
Time to get this issue and build it up!
Just remember Chris, once you go black you don't go back, those cars were badass back then and still are, as always a great build 👍👍👍👍
Thanks buddy!
Well done Chris! well done!i've built the older monogram kit and there were not so many decals inside. If i remember, only licenseplates, Turbo and Buick decals under the Hood. I think, there were no decals for Fenders, wheels, interior or Dashboard.perhaps, i have to order this new kit again - i love that car.
Thanks Dominik!

thanks for posting ALMOST AS MUCH FUN AS BUILDING IT MYSELF
Thanks Alvin!
Really great build! I love Revell's idea of combining the GNX and Grand National kit into one. They could've gone the way things were before and release both a GNX and a Grand National, but they decided to to this instead.
Also, once again, a rumor was false (rumor was that Revell was droping the Monogram name).
Thanks man!
It's safe to stay away from the internet know-it-alls. They don't know half of what they pretend to know.
@@hpiguy It was on one of the FB pages of Canadian modelist groups. I guess they were the ones that saw the know-it-alls.
Yeah, those rumors can be pretty funny.
Another good one, I remember the 'experts' saying the Pirate and Haunted Mansion kits were gone forever, the molds melted down and here comes 2018 and they are being reissued for the next few years.
This kit is a must have. Make sure you watch the history video they made on the workers involved in this car design and production
You should come out with a video that explains all the different paints and brands you use. Along with some of the techniques you use to achieve certain looks. Love your videos !!
Thanks!
Nice build Chris, the engine bay looks incredible!
Thanks Gene, they sure did a nice job with the turbo set up on this!
Your enthusiasm is infectious! Love your channel. --Cindi (Granny Glue-Sniffer)
Thanks again Granny!
Years ago, I bought the Grand National and built it followed by the GNX sometime later. I still have them both! Both came in black plastic but the decals were non-exsistant. I may have to rebuild them again.
Grab this copy and enjoy!
Man that black looks awesome. Great work. Ron
Thanks Ron!
Chris, that was another excellent build Sir! I remember as a kid in the 90's when my Mother had her 1990 Buick Century Limited, messing with those built in ash trays in the back of the seats haha! Thanks for another excellent review!
Thanks a lot John!
Awesome! I built a couple of these years ago. They should have molded it in black like they did back then.
Thanks Jim!
I drive an 83 Grand Prix! I wish Monogram would come out with a mid 80s Grand Prix!
A 2+2 version would be cool.
Somebody on Ebay sells custom G-Body molds. But they are expensive like $80. But then kit companies did make Nascar stock car molds too.
another slick production that holds one's interest -- thanks
Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!

your talents put this build over the top. beautiful build. and stop flicking the ashtray
Thanks George! LOL
There is a GNX sitting in the Buick Dealer showroom in California that was never sold. It is all original and it is to be sold at auction. Even thought it was never sold GM is not going to support the new car warranty. Good build on this one, your eye for detail is quite good.
Thanks man!

Great job! My absolute favorite car. Just ordered two kits. I will be using your video for guidance. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Cesar!
The engine bay looks phenomenal.
Thanks Craig, really cool details on this one!
I always wanted to get into model cars didn’t know you had to paint yourself too
Nice build!! I miss the 80's!!! :)
Thanks Cliff, good times!
A buddy of mine in the Air Force had a 1986 GN...FUN Car!! great job my friend
Thanks Todd!
I have a real 87 GNX. Very cool car and a cool model, well done.
Thanks Brandon!

Nice model kit of this iconic car. Thanks for sharing, best regards from Brazil !
Thanks Fabio!
Super nice build Chris & Great detail
Thanks Charles!
You just made me a Buick fan.
Cool!
Very nice build, beautiful car just like the Monte Carlo SS you built. Now you should find the 85' Olsmobile cutlass 442' model kit. That would be awsome.
Thanks for watching!
I had a real one, man oh man was it fast. But alas some mfr stole my pride and joy. This kit looks great, and the decals look better than older kits. Im going to but this.
Thanks Bob, she's a sweet one.
Nice build!
I had the first year turbo regal, '78 sport coupe in 2 tone green that I sold around '94/95, should have kept it as I never see them around, more likely to see the t-type and gn.
Nice what would be awesome if they had a 1982 grand national model i never saw one of those
Nice build .Thanks Chris.
Thanks GD!
I built a Grand National kit back in 87.
Really wished some company would create a Pontiac Grand Prix model from this era. With the exception of an older Richard Petty STP NASCAR Grand Prix, I have never seen any other kit with that body style.
awesome build love this car I had one back in the day..loved it keep them coming
Much appreciated!
facebook.com/hpiguysworkshop
Very nice detail on the grand national
Many thanks!
Looks beautimus. The kit I have from 2010 has a different decal sheet. And doesnt have the GNX wheels or dash. But other than that it's the same kit. Looks like it held up well.
Thanks Shannon!
awesome chris, would have also looked nice in black pearl, yet another gem!!
Thanks Mouse!
Nice work, sir! Glad to see this kit being reissued. Looking forward to picking one or two up for my collection. I've been watching your videos for quite some time and I have to ask... when are you going to change the filter in your paint booth? That thing is CAKED!
Thanks for watching!
It gets changed out often and within 30 seconds it looks dirty again.
Really like whose Grand Nationals nice kit
It's a great design!
Nice hair dryer, back when i was building i had a friend who tinted windows and i would grab some drop offs and use it to tint the windows on my cars. One piece and you could do a dozen cars. All black cars with tinted windows just look sinister
Nice!
Looks great Chris
Thanks Jeff!
Nice buick .well built in 20 minutes
Thanks!
Awesome Chris. Love the G-body
Thanks Charlie, me too!
Nice job mate ! Paint finish looks great
Thanks a lot Gary!
Another stellar build! I think this is a redone tooling as I don't remember the original issue kit being so full of detail..
Thanks Chris!
Got one of them 3.8L v6’s in my Commodore station wagon, non turbo but it might get a blower at some stage 🍻
Had one in my Grand Prix, the Series 2. It moved out and was even better in the GTPs.
hpiguys Workshop bloody rippa! Gotta love that body style
I built this car in 87 still have it.
kool , thanx....A friend o mine had one back when...yes , that car was quick....neat one...Rocking onnn
Robert
Thanks Robert!
Very well done! Can you list all the paint, glues and supplies you used?
now we just need a 1/24 scale "we brake for corvettes" bumper sticker
Thanks for the nice words and for watching!

Great job ! 😎👍
Thank you!
Beautiful always wanted one
Me too!
That's incredible! I came out looking sweet!😎👍
Thank you Anibal!
Nice grand national
Great video as usual Chris. I have a question...To seal and protect the body and stuff do you ever put a clear/matt coat on? Thanks for sharing and I can't wait to see the next build...
I usually stick with Future since they just sit on shelves and aren't exposed to any danger in handling or elements.
That's beautiful.
Thanks!
Beautiful job Chris! I was wondering how you would go from white to black. And just a memory I have, the "QUICK 1" license plate. I remember when these things first came out, one of the locals had a plate that read "ITSQUICK".
Thanks Topper, they sure moved out!
How in the world did you learn how to do this? I could never come close to doing one like this. Very impressive.
Practice is all it takes, grab a kit and have fun!
Thank you!

Fancy a challenge? How about building a ‘custom’ vehicle from all the extra bits that you don’t use from these 1:24th Revell kits?
Sounds like a great idea for your next build!
That's such a mean-looking car, nice work! I might have to get one of these sometime, and do it in a Warrior Cats scheme with custom plate.
Thanks!
Pretty car - another fine build. Thanks
Thank you!
Got this kit on order from the LHS.How did you do the reverse lights?
White gel pen.
awesome BUILD 👍👍👏👏
Thanks Richard!

how about Instagram
Informative and entertaining as usual, thanks!
Thanks Dave!
Looks great!
Thanks Red!
Really nice build
Thanks Ian!
awesome showroom shine
Thanks!
@@hpiguy your welcome!
I acquired a 1978 Regal with turbo. Apparently the turbo took a dump and somebody replaced it with a Chevy 5.0 liter. The body rusted off the mounts
Not much saveable, but I do have the hood with the 'power bulge'.
Nice!
Awesome build!!🏆
Thanks Mario!
Too bad, it looks like they didn't include the proper GNX rear end. Nice job otherwise, love my full scale Regal, have the kit too.
Nice job, love what you do.
Thanks for enjoying the channel!
When will this hit stores. I own a 87 grand national, I'd live to build this kit
ModelRoundup says they should have it in soon. Check their site.
BEAUTIFUL!! 👍👍👍
Thanks Jordan!
Beautiful! Love your videos!
Thanks!
