Not a super complicated project today, but a fun one nonetheless! These are the first vases/planters I've ever turned, and it's also the first time I've ever worked with ash. Given my lack of experience with this wood species, I can't tell if the block I started with is typical of this type of wood or not, but I found it to be surprisingly hard to work with (much harder than the walnut). For these planters, I decided to go with a taller shape that tapered towards the top, and once turned round, I cut a small piece off the end to give them an angled profile at the opening. Both were sanded to up 600 grit, abraded with Yorkshire Grit's polishing paste, and finished with carnuba wax. For my exclusively wood projects (meaning no resin used), I've been really pleased with the finish carnuba wax has been giving me lately. It's very easy and quick to apply, and, on wood, it gives me the exact amount of gloss I'm looking for. For the flowers, these were inserted into what are essentially test tubes I ordered online that fit perfectly into the holes I drilled out. If you like how these came out, let me know down below and I'll be sure to revisit this in the future with some more fun designs!

Lovely! I wondered if the ash was hard to cut. Glad you were able to get it to finish so nicely.

What are you using to finish these? It looks like the caramel my wife makes for millionaire shortbread.

Hi Mike, just a bar of carnauba wax that I friction polish onto the piece. Super quick and easy finishing option!
