What happens if Tidus kills the Water Flan in Besaid?

- I grinded over 100 hours to see what would happen in the dialogue in one of the fixed battles with Lulu, Wakka, and Tidus against a Water Flan in Besaid. Tidus is supposed to hit the flan and not be able to kill it and Lulu comes in to zap it with magic. But what happens if Tidus kills it instead. Join me in my quest for truth.
I almost exclusively play Final Fantasy on Twitch. Come say hi some time.

i had no idea lmao
She actually says "That was a bad example..." and the game lets you try again. I'm not a know-it-all for FFX or anything, I just started another playthrough on PC and experienced that scene, lmfao.
Also, kinda surprised that more people don't know that exists, but then again maybe the majority of gamers aren't like me and don't fat-finger things.
The "I'm just showing you what can happen if you cast the wrong magic", I believe, is her justification when Wakka calls her out on healing it if you cast Water.
Casting Fire/Blizzard gets you the "bad example" dialogue, and if you have Lulu goof around for long enough, Wakka will get annoyed with her and the tutorial ends that way.
Bro, you sounded truly defeated when you said "And that's it. 110 hours to answer one dumb question." 🤣 You're a champ in my eyes!

The average player probably wouldn’t care, but gotta say all of us who have played this game to hell and back and enjoy game design probably appreciate knowing how little things like that are scripted this way. You know what though, some QA probably went into making sure that if, just IF, *somehow* some madman grinded Tidus enough to one shot that Flan, the tutorial would still play and the game wouldn't crash. So, from a certain point of view, that's some solid game design.
They still could have made it so the game wouldn't have crashed

I remember trying to grind Star Ocean 2 to beat Dias at the tournament. No guide, didn't know Dias scaled to my level anyway, didn't know it could be cheesed, also that it just leads to a dialogue that restarts the battle infinitely. I just wanted to level some more.
Then there was general grinding in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Tactics Ogre Knight of Lodis, hoping for any endgame at all. Grinding 2-3 AGI points a battle long after the game has managed to remotely challenge you. Maybe I'll get that full 999 stats one day though.

The framework for these scripted events are built in to the battle system, and I believe there are some events like this that *do* happen after all the enemies are defeated, so it allows scenes to play out no matter what, and just checks for a battle clear condition after the dialogue finishes. It’s a pretty smart way of doing it, and pretty much guarantees there would be no way to softlock yourself this way.
i mean, to plan for and write additional dialogue and programming is more work than just forcing only one all time. so its more convenience and arguably laziness than genius
@@12345678abracadabra Sure yeah its laziness, but really theres no point going through the effort of programming a what if, if that what if can only be seen by doing an insane amount of grinding
@@12345678abracadabra That is basically like telling all RPG developers that they need some kind of 110 hour grind sesh, contingency. It isn't laziness to not design something that should never happen, instead you create a stable system with clear and flexible programming to prevent accidental breaks.
I mean they could have let the enemy be at 1 health until lulu shows up or something, I'm sure giving it that property wouldn't have been that hard
funny thing is that it was only implented starting in ps1 and above games. if i remember right off some nes examples the games tend to not have that and cause crashes from it.
Wrong, Tidus fades away and wakes up from his dream lol
Wrong again. The fiend explodes close the camera, causing it to fade out. Seconds pass, and slowly it begins to focus in again. You hear a voice. "Hey you, you're finally awake."

100 hrs of dedication and focus vs cheap easy and lazy playing. Y did you bother playing in the first place. This game is a classic and deserves to be played right like all FF games you need to grind it because it makes beating it feel so much more rewarding. Do you think that small list of people who have beat every FF game used cheap tricks, cheats or hacks no they earned it and that is an accomplishment you will never get until you learn what it means to grind out these games like there ment to be done.

There was a modified save game that brings down the stats of all characters, so Lulu can't one shot the flan. When you get here and do the attack and it doesn't kill it, the game just doesn't know how to continue and you are stuck.

the power that you have to put this much work into this.... unparalleled
I had a feeling this would happen, because Final Fantasy games aren't usually made for alternate outcomes (such as winning battles you're supposed to lose). I think my brother used a GameShark/Codebreaker to give the Brotherhood Sword piercing (in the PS2 version) in order to kill the Flan and this happened. It's hilarious that this still happened in the updated version, but at most updates will just clean up glitches.
Always wondered about the Auron armored fiend one. Never considered you could also do it for this battle as well. Shame nothing interesting happened but thanks for grinding for us all to find out!

In so much as the scene no longer makes any sense at all contextually. The context didn't fix itself to accommodate the scenario.

thanks for your dedication to make this happen! i didnt know i wanted to know this question but im glad it showed up, and now i know.
Reminds me of the scripted battle against Kain in FF-IV (from the Final Fantasy Chronicles). It's early game and the dude has 60000 HP. You are NOT supposed to win that battle, and at your (likely) levels at that point he curb-stomps you pretty quickly. So naturally I wondered what would happen if you beat him. Admittedly I used a cheat, but I got my levels up so high I not only weathered his attacks easily, but dished out some pretty good damage. Finally got him down and he "died" and vaporized off the screen, ending the battle. The result? Got nothing for my efforts, and the game proceeds as usual, with the now-defeated Kain towering over Cecil's prostrate body while saying, "Let me ease your suffering." Made no sense and I'm angry they didn't program anything special for that. :(
Ya know, I actually slid something into an FF fan game I'm making for an unwinnable boss early on. it takes literally hacking into the game to get rid of a trait that makes the boss literally unkillable, but if you manage to kill him there, it completely breaks the plot of the rest of the game... and so the lead developer just appears, chastises the characters and the player, and then viscerally punts the player back to the main menu as retribution, all while the characters question what the hell is going on.
No one will ever see it, most likely. but it's there. Because I care. :)
some versions of FF2 honestly boot you back to the title screen if you somehow win that unwinnable battle at the start of the game.
Meanwhile, Disgaea gives you non-standard game overs (equivalent to Losing regular boss fights) if you actually beat its unbeatable bosses (it Is supposed to be possible in normal gameplay, mind you, just... Probably not on your first couple of play throughs. Newgame+ and all.)
@@laurencefraser that's... jarring, the way you're explaining it.

So, whenever people ask me for my top 3 RPGs there's Chrono Cross. One reason why CC is in my top is because they actually coded situations in that game where you actually do something you're not supposed to do at the time (such as defeating your own party when you switch parties with Lynx.
