In 2018 everyone, also videographers, rushed to get the A7III because of its features and the price. Even though it’s a hybrid camera with some severe limitations especially for video work. Today, the FX30 is a dedicated cinema camera for under 2K. 4K 120, SLOG3 and 10bit whilst having dual native iso, so much better battery life in a smaller body and so on. This should be most people’s dream camera because most of the features were unheard of just a few years ago and certainly not for this price.
Man, I love the videos you put out regardless of which channel they're on, but especially the ones on here. And I 100, no, 500% agree with absolutely everything you said about the FX30. I only recently got one and have been falling in love with it more and more each time I shoot and edit the footage coming off of it. And the thing you said about hating camera comparisons is something I relate to more than I can explain. "Okay guys, look, I shot this footage in pitch black at ISO 32 000 and now I'm gonna zoom into it 400% to show how bad this camera is in low light". Like, ok, that's great, and it's also stupid af... I only wish there was a viewfinder. I don't give a shit that it's APS-C though; it's stellar on the motion front and a solid pinch hitter for stills.
I just switched from a A7SII to the FX30 and im never looking back ! Shot my recent little short in extreme low light and even in flexible ISO, it works depending on what you're trying to convey!
All I need for the Sony look is the FX30. My first and probably only full frame is a panny s52x. And I slept on that one. Till Black Friday. It came with a free 50mm 1.8. Chasing the top tier cameras means you have less money for props and production value. You’re better off trying to buy a fisher type dolly or a crane than an FX6 or 9.
I love my FX30. I'm a freelance videographer and documentary filmmaker, and I also do videos for my 9 to 5 at the government agency that I work for. I've used this camera with the TT Artisan 17 and 35 mm lenses. Both of those lenses have an f-stop of 1.4, and I'm blown away by how those lenses have saved my butt on the FX30. The footage that comes from this camera with those lenses, as well as the sigma 18 to 50, are amazing. I just ignore the haters.
Dude YES. I’m an amateur, shooting about 6 months now on the FX30 and I couldn’t be happier with my choice! What a steal! Paired with my new SLR Magic Microprimes, the cinema quality is 🤌🏼 Great video brother 👏🏼
thank you so much mate in this eye opening explanation on fx30, Im planning to get 1 of this fantastic camera, yah yah right don't compare this camera on other, coz that don't make sense really
I own fx30 and I'm a "wanna be" filmmaker. You are absolutely right when you say it's underrated. This camera can do sooooooo much it's almost unbelievable.
Just got one last week as my B cam to the FX3. The appeal was actually the APSC. The availability of cheap cinema lenses for that format is bonkers. Plus if I ever get the Komodo X, it's an easy transfer of lenses.
100% - I mean ideally a mark II of the FX3 has a crop mode but I’m starting to doubt it. imo the ideal camera is full frame with a full featured S35 mode (like the burano)
@@sloppysteaks that was such a bizarre shock when I first bought my FX3. I was digging through every menu for apsc. And it just wasn't there. Even though it was on my a73. You can technically zoom in to APSC crop with clear image zoom.. but it's just clunky
@@ScottJeschke it’s also strange that Sony doesn’t give you the full 6k on the FX30 over HDMI - I don’t really care about raw but if it did open gate out the HDMI on the FX30 that would be awesome. It’s got a weird cropped 4.6K ProRes raw mode. I use clear image zoom on my a7iv sometimes to go like 1.3x and I can use the nightwalkers on it in near FF. I’ve always wondered if clear image is worse on FX3 than a7iv because it has less resolution. who knows. that’s some Gerald shit to figure out.
@@sloppysteaks thank God for Gerald , haha. Yeah, I feel like open gate could easily be a firmware offering. But it's just sony being Sony, and not letting us have it all. I have to imagine the a74 has better clear image zoom than the FX3 with that 7K sensor. Personally, I've never been blown away by clear image zoom on my FX3. On the other hand, Gawx uses it all the time, and his stuff makes my stuff look like it's shot on Fisher-Price, so what do I know? 😂
Patrick, I watched your video with Gerald on the FX30. You both were saying the stabilisation was the best in the Sony camera line up. I was looking at a ZVE1 but stumbled across your video. I own a A7R5 but want second camera to get a second angle, and maybe some better stabilisation.
Nice video brother, preach it. Owned a 30, loved it, regret selling it. Needed a little more of hybrid. But can absolutely pair the footage from the FX30 with my a1 and no one would ever know which is which. You make me want to grab one, throw a 35 nightwalker on it and just always have in the bag.
I love the FX30, it’s my go-to rental for a B cam whenever I shoot a wedding or event. Much more cost effective and bang for my buck than renting an FX3 for the same timeframe (usually the difference in price means I get to rent the body and lens for the same or comparable price as the FX3).
I have a A7siii and i feel exactly how you do. Having started off with the A6400 and already having the sigma trio and 18-105mm this thing is soooooo underrated and a STEAL for the price. These days i use it more than the S3. Great review ! Subbed !
Please do more reviews of camera stuff like this. I honestly have not considered a new camera until I saw this All round if I do photography but personally I have a passion for film making - would this be ideal? Or Sony a7? Part of me even wants to go the route of the Q3 but that’s just for potential clients … and personally I find myself shooting video a lot more
I love this video bro. Currently struggling with my Fx30. Been thinking about swapping it for a A6700 but I know I’ll miss the subtle “cinema” advantages the fx30 brings. Like the fan, the front record button, 2 card slots, the mounts, you know this little things. When I bought it I seen it as a sleeper hybrid camera but I’ve been struggling to get the image that I want out of this thing but I know it’s possible because you and many other creators are doing it. I appreciate videos like this, makes me want to keep striving to get my fx30 to do what I know it can do. Not to mention I’m slightly new to the video world.
@@sloppysteaks yes I know I wassnt looking to switch for improvement but as a bit of a downgrade. I guess I would fall under the line of a hybrid shooter but I lean more so to the video side of things, photos are still a huge part of my work. I went with the fx30 to get the ergonomics of a cinema camera but also still be able to take quality photos. But I’m not going to switch.
We use 3 fx30’s for work. I enjoy them, the only thing I’m not fond of is the battery life. I still use Panasonic for personal work but these fx30’s are great. Like Rick Asso said, can’t be doing side by side comparisons. Definitely a recommend 🔥
@@sloppysteaks I havem on usbc to outlets but when I took it out on the field, it felt like 1/2 of what my s5 battery could hold. But I think I have to clarify, it’s long form documenting stuff so I have it recording for long periods of time vs periodically 👍🏼. Thats such a minor thing though, cameras are so good these days.
Really thinking about getting one as it's only slightly outside what I would let myself buy budget-wise. Unless there's an FX30 JR (A6700 maybe?), this might be the next grab.
TBH, I've been researching for my first cinema camera and comparing FF vs S35. Watching comparisons. Learning. Watching more comparisons. I'm completely sold on the S35. I really don't need a FF sensor. FX30 is looking real good.
Currently shoot micro four thirds and the only reason I want to upgrade to full frame is so I don’t crop out all the swirly bokeh of the Helios lens I want and have to buy a speed booster. Otherwise sensor size really doesn’t matter much to me.
I can only buy one nightwalker at the moment , that being said is the best option in my situation the 35mm Since it's in-between 24mm and 55mm? Which mm do you reach for the most is what I'm asking I guess
First off, great video, and I absolutely agree with you. I have owned almost all of Sony’s mirrorless cameras and the FX30s are some of my faves. I bought my first one after my A7C overheated on a job, and I bough my second to do three camera podcast shoots. These cameras are bulletproof workhorses that shoot great images and match well with the FX6.
At this point I stick to full frame simply because I have a sense of the FoV and depth of field at certain distances and lenses, before even actually framing the camera. But I know I can train myself to do the same for apps-c
trust me the fx30 is a beast! love mine and am too happy. can't wait for a fx3 (as a A & B cam) but I've gotten paid gigs and my clients just bought me the sniper lenses! all for/because of the FX30!
hey, thanks for your video! i was considering the fx3 but i think it's too expensive to have on my bag all day long. thanks for your points. One question, do you think the audio handle is worth it? i mostly work on documentaries. I'm working with a BMPCC 4K since years... but i'm considering buying something more versatile for everyday shooting. thanks for you video :)
Nice Video man, love the look you created! Can you please tell me if you shot the night scenes in slog 3? If so, habe you been able to overexpose enough in iso 2500? Keep up that good work, i own an fx30 but iam honestly saving all my loose money tot the fx3 🤣
Been a fan of your style for a minute now! Watching your videos actually inspired me to get the FX30 and start creating! If you had to pick one Night Walker lens for the FX30 what would you choose?? I've heard many say the 24mm but I would appreciate your thoughts! I'm mostly shooting short films btw. I currently own a Sigma 18-50mm lens and wanting to get my first cinema lens
The minimal interest in this camera is bizarre. Seems like a hidden gem. When I was living MFT speed booster life chasing that old school S35 I'd have loved something like this. The lack of replies and or/arguments in the comment section is also strange. I'll add some much needed spice and note that Deakins becomes physically sick in the presence of an anamorphic lens. kekeke

Paired with my new SLR Magic Microprimes, the cinema quality is 🤌🏼
Great video brother 👏🏼
Love you dude. You made my day.
thank you so much mate in this eye opening explanation on fx30, Im planning to get 1 of this fantastic camera, yah yah right don't compare this camera on other, coz that don't make sense really
Alright. You convinced me. Pulled the trigger on the FX30 to replace my old a6400.
Every time I show friends & clients my fx30 footage with vintage lenses, they all get mindblown.
but man, who isn’t shooting dolphins at night underwater these days
I am constantly. This camera sucks!
Dood, I freakin' LOVE that mic setup, no bs!!!
Patrick, I watched your video with Gerald on the FX30. You both were saying the stabilisation was the best in the Sony camera line up. I was looking at a ZVE1 but stumbled across your video. I own a A7R5 but want second camera to get a second angle, and maybe some better stabilisation.
👍
Nice video brother, preach it. Owned a 30, loved it, regret selling it. Needed a little more of hybrid. But can absolutely pair the footage from the FX30 with my a1 and no one would ever know which is which. You make me want to grab one, throw a 35 nightwalker on it and just always have in the bag.
Still stuck with you on GH5ii..still i love those people like you who debunk “you need full frame,”..
Love your work, mate!
And absolutely spot on! I'd happily shoot with the FX30 any day. It's an absolute beast for the price point!
I love the FX30, it’s my go-to rental for a B cam whenever I shoot a wedding or event. Much more cost effective and bang for my buck than renting an FX3 for the same timeframe (usually the difference in price means I get to rent the body and lens for the same or comparable price as the FX3).
fullframe also doesnt become an issue if u own a metabones speedbooster to sorta compensate. Overall though, the FX30 is more than enough.
I have a A7siii and i feel exactly how you do. Having started off with the A6400 and already having the sigma trio and 18-105mm this thing is soooooo underrated and a STEAL for the price. These days i use it more than the S3. Great review ! Subbed !
I’m going to buy 3 fx30 and a set of 3 sirui snipers
Love it! Love the passion bro 🎥💪🏻
You are absolutely right. APSC cameras are amazing.
Wait until the new update when they add shutter angle. It's here to stay for a while.
Love my fx30, it turns heads everywhere I go :D
Please do more reviews of camera stuff like this.
I honestly have not considered a new camera until I saw this
All round if I do photography but personally I have a passion for film making - would this be ideal? Or Sony a7?
Part of me even wants to go the route of the Q3 but that’s just for potential clients … and personally I find myself shooting video a lot more
If you’re mostly doing photography then you should go Sony a7iv or similar. thnx for watching!
Not to mention I’m slightly new to the video world.
thanks! yeah and remember the 6700 is the exact same sensor. your image quality won't improve with it.
I love how hype you get about the FX30! Hahaha I dig the look and I got to mess with one recently and I’m sold on it 💯 percent!
Something not mentioned enough is how bad this cameras rolling shutter is. Turns me off immediately. Especially when shooting automotive.
i've had 0 issues with it. i shot that whole Benz video with it. crazy handheld and panning.
We use 3 fx30’s for work. I enjoy them, the only thing I’m not fond of is the battery life. I still use Panasonic for personal work but these fx30’s are great. Like Rick Asso said, can’t be doing side by side comparisons. Definitely a recommend 🔥
interesting i mostly use the internal battery its been great
@@sloppysteaks I havem on usbc to outlets but when I took it out on the field, it felt like 1/2 of what my s5 battery could hold.
Well done, super confident, no BS. Great footage. You don't waste my time. Team up with a digital marketer to up your subs. Keep it up!
TBH, I've been researching for my first cinema camera and comparing FF vs S35. Watching comparisons. Learning. Watching more comparisons. I'm completely sold on the S35. I really don't need a FF sensor. FX30 is looking real good.
I have a phobia of micro jitters. If I’m rigging up, this would definitely be a great pick.
this camera has awesome IBIS. no need to rig up. we shoot the studio tours on Gerald’s channel with it. no gimbal. just camera.
@@sloppysteaks ooo I don’t know about awesome fam. Then again, I’m coming from the gh5 😆
@@fatherhooding I came from gh6
I just discovered your video and channel. Looking forward to see more from you!
The mic on the old Nokia was a nice touch!
I was caught in the full frame mind fuck for a awhile but i have zero regrets owning an FX30
Besides its one sexy ass camera
Love my FX3, not hating a super35 sensor, just love my video setup with the FX3 and A7iv. Shoot with what you want and enjoy it.
Currently shoot micro four thirds and the only reason I want to upgrade to full frame is so I don’t crop out all the swirly bokeh of the Helios lens I want and have to buy a speed booster. Otherwise sensor size really doesn’t matter much to me.
Beautiful footage, what luts do you use?
i grade to taste thnx
Howd you know i was shooting dolphins underwater at night? xD Great video man, will be purchasing this camera
Beautiful footage
Forget about the camera lens for a second WOW that SL Merc is stunning!
thanks I’ve had it for a couple years - watch the full vid on my channel
Super-35 has been a pretty standard format for close to 100 years now. Slap some LOMO OKS lenses on there and enjoy.
legally i dont think you're allowed to shoot dolphins at anytime
HAHA
Fx-30 (even a6700) + Gyroflow combo is unbeatable right now.
I would agree that the FX30 is more than enough camera for most shooters, and the lens options being E-mount S35 are endless.
I can only buy one nightwalker at the moment , that being said is the best option in my situation the 35mm Since it's in-between 24mm and 55mm? Which mm do you reach for the most is what I'm asking I guess
I haven’t really used any of these at all lol I need autofocus
@@sloppysteaks oh okay, so autofocus soo what I've been hearing everywhere I go is sigma 18-50 lens for fx30 so I guess it's true
@@sloppysteaks ruclips.net/video/GlUNykOgdoo/видео.htmlsi=PLb1LeJReuB_O19Q I guess I'll save....
I think that it came after the FX3. That cam seeped up all the air. not heard anyone say FX30 is a bad camera.
But I know I can train myself to do the same for apps-c
the problem with large format is the bokeh - it's far too shallow to let light in.
@@sloppysteaks I can see that as a general mindset, tho I do think that can be solved with the the right camera and with sensitive enough base ISO’s q
trust me the fx30 is a beast! love mine and am too happy. can't wait for a fx3 (as a A & B cam) but I've gotten paid gigs and my clients just bought me the sniper lenses! all for/because of the FX30!
I would totally get the FX30 but the S5ii is a hybrid camera and I kinda need that. FX30 quality looks fantastic.
I would really skip the s5ii and wait for what’s next. it’s got too many flaws imo
Noted. thanks Patrick. did you mean the next lumix camera or just cameras general?@@sloppysteaks
@@alejandropargaa next gen of lumix - they need to sort out the autofocus and rolling shutter
ah, gotcha. thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. ✌🏽@@sloppysteaks
Aaaaa! I'm almost over from convincing myself that I need a full frame camera, almost! This might tip me over and just upgrade to a6700 from my a6400.
hey, thanks for your video!
i was considering the fx3 but i think it's too expensive to have on my bag all day long. thanks for your points.
Slog3 iso 800 thnx - I never overexpose waste of time
@@sloppysteaks wtf youre breaking the rules that this religious community set in stone :) ? So you had to denoise in post?
@@denisk.4092 zero denoising
Been a fan of your style for a minute now! Watching your videos actually inspired me to get the FX30 and start creating! If you had to pick one Night Walker lens for the FX30 what would you choose?? I've heard many say the 24mm but I would appreciate your thoughts! I'm mostly shooting short films btw. I currently own a Sigma 18-50mm lens and wanting to get my first cinema lens
I’d stick with the sigma and keep the AF. Play around with the 24mm setting on it or 35mm and start to develop your style for framing.
@@sloppysteaks Challenge accepted!Appreciate you man! 🙌🏻
are you using a mist filter on these? or is that how it just looks with the bloom around highlights?
No idea
bro is spittin
Does focus peaking display still work with the Sirui Night Walker Cinema Lenses?
Peaking isn’t connected to lenses. It works with anything.its just analyzing the image for the sharpest pixels.
@@sloppysteaks I thought that was the way it worked.
I figured my question would be dumb😂
Totally agree with this one! I think people are like going for the FF/FX3 because of the 12,800 ISO.
It's a dope piece of gear. And hot damn the glass *can* be cheaper too.
The minimal interest in this camera is bizarre. Seems like a hidden gem. When I was living MFT speed booster life chasing that old school S35 I'd have loved something like this. The lack of replies and or/arguments in the comment section is also strange. I'll add some much needed spice and note that Deakins becomes physically sick in the presence of an anamorphic lens. kekeke
Great video, loved the color grading and the whole full frame vs apsc crap… but the BEST part was the Nokia.
Just wondering, what happened with the background @1:20?
nothing
I don't care that it's APSC....but I do wish it could do 4k120 without the crop that negates the lenses.
what i really dislike it the fact that IF you want to step up with an external recorder to get the best out ot it, the camera crops into the sensor
wtf you need an external recorder for, that's another silly thing youtubers like to shove down people's throats
@@sloppysteaks i mean to get 12 bit for max flexibility in post for color grading. when shooting shortfilms it gives you more freedom
@@ShangleLP I’ve used it it’s completely pointless unless you’re royally fucking up on set
