    This is the new way for so many shooters out there. Its a path I have gone down in the last year or so - being agile also lets you direct more effectively and be more creative on set.

    Lovely video, Josh. Good to see how you do your day to day stuff. Not to be presumptous, but maybe it could add versatility for jobs with interviews to stuff in a small white shower curtain, or some muslin, or maybe a mini reflector - so you can have options to do soft lighting? Bounce it off, etc etc. But it's clearly working for you as is!

  • @EdProsser
    @EdProsser 4 месяца назад +1

    Love it, after getting the LUMIX S5iix I'm definitely rethinking certain jobs that can be done with a smaller footprint and its a lot less stressful working with a streamlined setup. I haven't managed to get it all down to a single backpack like you, but close!
    Might have to pick up that articulating camera arm thing.

    Funny I had the exact setup with me yesterday on a shooting. Different brands (Sony, nanlite 60b,...) but same setup. I did not have my 14” macbook pro or a back-up camera because I was a 5 minute drive from my studio but this is what I wanted to ask: no back-up camera?
    It's rarely the case for the camera to fail but I'd carry at least a smaller ASPC if I know I'm going to travel far and there is no option to rent.
    I can confirm, smaller clients prefer smaller crews and setups, not just for the costs. We switched from carrying 5 cases of lighting equipment to 3 flashes (speedlites) when only shooting pictures, because we were taking up too much space and time.
    Gear is getting more compact and powerful. :)

    Less is more, this is exactly what I'm building to do my videos and my portfolio, we have the opportunity to make so much with very compact setup, this is amazing...
    Most of the jobs that I've watched and inspired me the last year were made with a very minimal setup and the final product was outstanding, so my opinion is, if you know what you're doing, if you know your camera and have a solid knowledge about cinematography you'll rock it, no doubts!!!
    Thanks for the video.

      I’m glad you agree with me on this one! Sometimes the shoots call for a massive amount of gear depending on the project and amount of hands we have on set etc, but most of the time I love to just be by myself, with a single bag of tricks 😂🙏🏼

    Nice video, very similar to our travel and 'light' kit for corporate jobs around London. Driving into the centre really isn't worth it for the majority of shoots so having a lightweight kit that can fit in one bag and travel on the tube with is critical. I also think it's what the vast majority of clients want as well. Causing mass disruption and distraction in an office is the last thing they want, some have quite strict rules about plugging anything into power as well.

    I agree with almost all of your points, i cant wrap my head around on why are you bringing a softbox when you can just rent one for 20 bucks or so on every location. Would save you a lot of bag space.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 месяца назад

      Finding rental stores nearby my shoot locations would be a pain. It also adds the extra element of having to pick up/return gear while on the move, and honestly I’d rather just have it all myself than worry about the fate of an entire shoot in a different country being at the hands of a rental company!

    • @poti732
      @poti732 3 месяца назад

      @@JoshCameron I meannnn that is a fair point , I understand your POV now , I only travel to shoot in bigger cities so i always rent out 3 or 4 softboxes on every location , it is more expensive to travel w a light kit than to rent out one . My peli Case would be around 8Kilograms by itself + the lights , so i have to pay overweight fees and it should be in my checked in luggage. Now the entire faith of a shoot is the hands of the airport IF the peli case arrives or not . Kindof the same thing imo but I got your point if you just need 1 light it makes a lot more sense to fit into the carryon backpack .

    Still curious to see how Ulanzi 40w mini battery powered cob light does in these types of situations. The ULANZI has way better light modifiers and at very affordable price points. Also Godox just released an mkii of their last 60w cob light which is about the same size as this Smallrig, but also with better quality light modifiers.

    Hey! Did your Lumix get weird after the latest firmware update? When recording on S5 I had all the info displayed on both the camera screen as well as the external monitor.
    When I switched to the S5 IIx the info is displayed only on one of them - either the camera screen or the monitor. This started to happen with the 1.5 firmware update.
