    Do you think someone experiencing memory loss can ever retrieve a traumatic past?

      Támara Hill, MS NCC CCTP LPC I hope you can continue this! I'm trying to work out my CPTSD and it's hard since it's in ongoing thing but there's also some loss or resistance to remember some things that's getting in the way of doing my EMDR

      For the past 10 years I've remembered bits and pieces of traumatic times from prison.. it was a long period of traumatic events.. from trying to be killed to being in a coma.. for years I knew..but I could never understand these flash backs.. memories came back with each vivid image.. tonight.. I did.. I searched deep and finally watched from the time I went to prison until the very last moment there.. I now have completed my endless search for answers.

    Violent crime survivor. I’ve never heard of having amnesia but it makes total sense now. I have big memory gaps but I have police record of things that happened. But actually very few memories of the incident. I think that’s where a lot of my nightmares come from. Eight years later two years of intense (2x a week) EMDR and I’ve worked through so many issues. But the nightmares never go away. I yell scream and move around. And lost relationships because the fact I’m a pain in the ass to sleep with. I’ve also tried all kinds of medications for sleep none of which has worked for me.

      Thank you for sharing this with us Sam. I'm really sorry to hear this. This is tough. PTSD, especially chronic PTSD, requires repeated counseling and treatment throughout the lifespan. It's just not something that you can get counseling and treatment for one time and be okay. As you go along in your life, you will encounter stress, more trauma, disappointments, challenges, stress, etc. that will trigger you. I often inform my clients that the nightmares are often a sign that PTSD has been triggered again. It's a consequence of trauma that may or may not go away. Someone who can understand this and appreciate you for who you are, I hope will find you.
      Take care

    I don't remember anything growing up my childhood my teen years my adult years but as I sat here and I watched your video I just started crying and I don't know why I can't figure it out

      I'm sorry! Perhaps you were feeling a sense of overwhelm or maybe your subconscious has the information your heart and mind cannot access at this time and you are emotionally reacting. This may be an important experience to explore.

    Your videos help me so much when I am feeling overwhelmed. I started crying today in the middle of my yoga routine (I've been told yoga and other types of body work can bring up trapped emotion, although I don't understand fully how that works); I feel plagued by intrusive thoughts about a family member I've almost always had a poor relationship with growing up... Your video was the only thing that helped calm me down enough to stop ugly crying.

    Can traumatic experiences make your brain create an phantom pain where there is no injury?

    So for the passed 23 years i've been constantly reminded of how " i pushed my 1 year old brother down some stairs when i was 6" the thing that bothers me is that i can't remember doing this no matter how hard i try, and no one else knows what happened because no one saw it happen.
    Everyone tells me im sweet and gentle and wouldn't hurt a fly, yet these same people remind me of this story any chance they get.
    So im trying to remember what happened and if i really did this.

    This happened to me. There’s so much I experienced in childhood that I suppressed and hid away because I had to survive at the time. I made myself forget only for it to come back years and years later after having my first child.

    I remember that when was eleven, I had to wash all of the dishes before I was allowed to play outside. My narcissistic father said, vacuum since your grand parents are coming over for dinner.

    Wow, it really can get complicated trying to sort these memories out. For me all it takes is a random word heard as I watch television or song from the past heard on the radio to cause memories to flood into my conscious state of mind. It seems to me that my subconscious mind is full of all these terrible memories from the past just waiting for an opportunity to reinsert itself into my consciousness and wreck havoc. What is one to do?

      Thank you Thomas for sharing this. You are right that your subconscious mind is flooded with bad experiences of a traumatic nature. These things have been encoded or burned into your existence. I'll be talking about that Wednesday. Stay tuned.

    Hi Tamara! Great video. What do you call it when your brain keeps flashing back to a place of comfort that you no longer have access to? Like a place that you have become attached because you shared it with a past lover, and have built memories but obviously can't go back?

    • @TherapistTamaraHill
      @TherapistTamaraHill  4 года назад +2

      Thank you! I'm glad this was helpful.
      I think you would still call this a flashback. Even though the flashback is positive, it is still a sign that something is triggering the thought and most likely the corresponding emotion. It's still "traumatic" in a sense because you are obviously missing or longing for something. Having little to no control over the "flashbacks" is what makes them difficult to manage and cope with, even if positive.

    My memory loss gotten worst. I left an 8 year emotionally abusive relationship and I been struggling to remember anything now. Is there a way my memory will come back? I’m 30 years old.

    • @TherapistTamaraHill
      @TherapistTamaraHill  2 года назад +1

      I'm sorry. That's always a difficult thing to accept. Memory can come back with trauma treatment, particularly a really good therapist skilled in EMDR or processing of traumatic memories. Sometimes memory will come back with certain triggers in the environment. It's a very tricky situation.

    Is it normal for your brain to make you forget trauma ?

  • @dianerose7631
    @dianerose7631 2 года назад

    Does your brain eventually block things out? I have hundreds of memories of verbal abuse that greatly upset me as a child and or the most part I have blocked it. If I dwelled on all this memories I would be even more unstable rn

    • @TherapistTamaraHill
      @TherapistTamaraHill  2 года назад +3

      Yes. I think it's a coping mechanism to protect itself. The part of the brain most likely associated with blocking memories is the temporal lobes, hippocampus, and the amygdala. I talk more about that in one of my recent videos: ruclips.net/video/zpO5VcK125I/видео.html.

    Hello I have had ppartital memories and dreams of sexual abuse by my uncle when I was 6, he gave me stolkholm syndrome and I just forgot but felt the pain and shame constantly and then I confronted him, the memories are like told to me by my brain then the feelings of extreme emotional pain kicks in and I actually forget it when I am sober without (lately stimulants) :/ I've been clean 5 years and I am sad I am sort of a zombie that just wants apathy and I want to stop trying to convince myself it happened, it was really bad and I don't need to worry about his health but it's a living nightmare :( I also have a viral blood infection that attacks the brain, the hypothalamus and amydala and I have to be medicated or I have police come because my ptsd I didn't realise was bigger as a teen I was sex trafficked and actually was in a cult 😓 I was so so lost I have been processing all the rape and having my life almost end at the hands of others so much I forgot my childhood
