  • Have you ever wondered how to start saltwater fly fishing? Well this might be a part of the solution. A beefed up version of this simple fly could be used for LRF (light rock fishing) . Bass, Wrasse, pollock, can be targeted with this very simple, hard-wearing fly this fly. Paul aptly christened it "The Dragon fly". Needless to say Paul fly fishes for everything now ;)) Happy days.
    This is my attempt at replicating a Berkley power bait fire tail into a fly. Leaving a straight cut on the tail I've found to be more effective than a tapered cut. Best of luck.

    I'm sitting watching this at work waiting for the 1st of February so I can start another Salmon season. This video has reminded me that there are more species out there than just Salmon. I have fly fished for Pollock in the Isle of Skye years ago and it was one of the most memorable days of my life. We caught loads of fish, saw basking sharks, whales and a whole plethora of other wildlife. Your videos have made me start planning a few more trips out at sea. I think you can get wrapped up in a certain species, which makes you neglect the other 28,000. Variety is the spice of life. Thanks for waking me up! I've subbed and look forward to your next video.

    Hi there bud nice to see an Irish channel on here. Like the use of wig material in the fly I also use same for tying sea trout and pike flies, great inexpensive material with a lovely shine to it. Have you tried tying some crab patterns for the Wrasse? Also what set up are you using, line weight and type Please. Thanks for sharing BTW👍

    • @surethingsfly
      @surethingsfly  5 лет назад

      Hi Gary, I use very simple shrimp patterns for Wrasse. Set-up changes to suit the conditions, ground, and Species. In general I use an 8# weight for the salt. If you are referring to this video? this is a copy and paste of a previous reply for this video that might be of some interest - "A sinking line is great, but for beginners I find it causes a sense of panic when their fly line tangles with rocks or on the rod rings. If everything goes bad a floating line will go nowhere as opposed to a sinking line where it disappears to the bottom, where you might not ever see it again (due to the rough terrain). The lead shots are only used for maintaining action, and keep the fly straight. It sinks a little...6" to 12" inches then it is stripped to the surface. Finally it is hard to beat a bit of surface action to get the heart going! Whatever works for you that is the main-thing. The rod my friend used here was a simple old river trout rod that he had in his garage...now he has more gear than I do ;)) " Good wishes to you Gary.

    Sweet I wish I could be there. Are you allowed to retain fish & how many? Is a licence needed for saltwater? Did you not tie off head & what did u do at last near tail with plyers?

    • @surethingsfly
      @surethingsfly  8 лет назад

      +Tossdart Yes we can keep fish, normally just one for the plate. Yes but only for some fish like sea trout and they're laws and regulations for bass. I squeezed some split shot to add weight to the fly. Tightlines Tossdart.

    Hello there mate, you may remember I asked you about your lures recently the Cox and Rawle ones. Anyhow, since I have watched and enjoyed all your videos from the tackle box layout one to this one. Some of yours are my favrouite out of the RUclips ones your caractor and spirit is great. I would like to buy a fly rod, reel line and such for bass fishing off the rocks etc. My problem is that I dont know or understand what to buy any guidance you can give me would be really great. Many thanks and very happy fishing John

    • @surethingsfly
      @surethingsfly  8 лет назад

      +John D Hi John, thanks for the positive feedback and any thumbs up^ much appreciated! Might I suggest to try and find an old rod somewhere or someone. Then using a fly or jellyworm and jig it from a rock mark using the fly rod. It shouldn't take long (weather and tides permitting of course) before a fish grabs it and scares you ;)) Do not worry about breaking the rod just point it down towards the fish, using the fly line as a hand-line to play the fish and not the rod. The beauty of fly fishing from the rocks is casting is not needed. After landing your first fish the rest will happen in time by default ie. casting and such. If you still like the idea of fly fishing after a while then I recommend to and go buy fly rod more appropriate for your quarry. On my most recent video ("great rod and fly")I recommend a very economical, quality fly rod built for such a job. Either way I wish you luck and happy hunting. ATB.

    Hello. Where I can find this kind of electric cables in Ireland, because I can't find anywhere? Thank You 😊

    • @surethingsfly
      @surethingsfly  6 лет назад +1

      This as it produces better www.veals.co.uk/acatalog/gemini-silicone-tubing-1677.html - Insert solder wire and you are in business. Alternatively use something similar to www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16-5-AMP-Rated-1mm2-Thin-Wall-2-Twin-Core-Cable-Wire-Car-LED-Lights-/252528650893 . You can find a great selection of electrical cables at most electrical wholesalers in Ireland. I hope this helps Izabela. ATB.

    What is your setup?

    • @surethingsfly
      @surethingsfly  7 лет назад +2

      The set-up was a cheap old 7# trout rod with a floating line. (Perfectly good enough for starting saltwater fly fishing.) It was Paul’s first Pollock on the fly. Now he has more fly gear than I do!
      A sinking line is a great line to have in your arsenal, but things can get out of control when you're new to fly fishing off rocks. When a line sinks you're heading into the unknown, so it can get fouled around rocks or whatever, or if a Pollock takes you for a spin. Floating line is a safer option for this reason, but a sinking will gives a better chance of producing if the fish are not feeding hard. ATB.

    That's just too heavy of a fly to be casting with a fly rod. You be better off just using a spinning rod, especially with the methods you are using to retrieve it.

    • @surethingsfly
      @surethingsfly  5 лет назад

      This method might appear a tad rough, but it merely helps someone off the starting blocks (when it comes to saltwater fly fishing). After a fish or two under their belt, they become more at ease with lighter flies. Whatever works. Spinning is good but swff beats it hands-down. Good wishes to you Ted, and have a great season. ATB.
