    It isn't clear why this short essay on young Russian Artist Nicholas Koshkosh has attracted so much vitriol. An Artist's appearance and speech can be deceptive, and no more so than on social media. Here, Artist's are encouraged to display novelty as badges of honour; and these badges are valued over restraint and intellectual substance.
    There is little new in any Artist seeking social acknowledgement and patronage. However, the prominence of social media's overwhelming shallowness makes judgement of creative worth difficult (especially when people have few references other than social media's popularist, over simplified view of the world).
    I found Koshkosh’s artwork lively and playful. His work reminds me of Pop Street Art that came to prominence in the late 1950s; a myriad of savvy naïve styles that are constantly being reinvented.
    What some viewers may have difficulty grasping is video essays are not universally easy to fund and make. Sometimes it's necessary for Documentary Film-makers (and their subjects) to accept funding from advertisers (such as the French luxury goods company Dior). That said there’s an unintended irony to “Survival Through Art”. Nicholas Koshkosh may need to make art to survive the crippling social conservatism of Russia, but I expect media smart Dior probably relished the idea of an enfant terrible smearing their haute couture fashion with paint.

      “Survive the crippling social conservatism of Russia”.... Lol Oh boy, I hope you are speaking of the government and don’t actually think the overwhelmingly majority of people (hard-to-find-anyone-that’s-not) are as hardcore religious and conservative as western corporate media feed you.

    His art, is very reminiscent and somewhat reminds me of the work from Basquiat. I, personally like this art because I like to think of how it makes me feel. I don't see this guy (too much) to be a poser. Or that his art is low level.

      @goldcrowncheifbroncogang7579 7 лет назад +9

      Molly All of those artists changed how art was viewed. None of them made terrible so called art then listed designer brands after their video to hopefully gain attention. They gained attention from their art, they didnt try to hard by listing the brands they wore. Picasso paintings sell for millions and it didnt matter if he wore a paper bag. It would be like you buying real great art from those artists, putting it on your walls, then making some painting in your living room in front of those works of art, then at the end you dont sell your art you just list all the expensive art you have on your walls to legitamize your own standing. Thats not art. dahli never made art then when asked just pointed to a picasso.

    • @epictetus9221
      @epictetus9221 7 лет назад +18

      You guys are missing the essential meaning of "survival"... It's just surviving. Not prevailing, not thriving, just surviving. So, it's not really a grandiose claim to make - and there is no point in bringing up a giant like Picasso in this context.

    Почему люди решили, что они знают как правильно? Станьте добрее, и жизнь станет проще. Симбиоз художника и произведения важен, но работы Koshkosh для меня самостоятельны. Да, фигура одиозная, но только для тех, кто не старается взглянуть шире на происходящее. Разве само существование чего либо не есть отражение процессов до? Вы смотрите на лакмусовую бумажку времени, и если она вам не нравится, то чтож, она не должна вам нравится.

    The Hindu swastika isn't offensive at all they probably got it mixed up with the Nazi swastika and also probably because he didn't put the four dots within the lines of the Hindu swastika. Which I understand not all of them have but when people visualize it they usually think about those four dots being there.

    Why copy Basquiat so much? Draw like you draw, not like someone else. It's too obvious.
    --
    Зачем копировать Баскиа так неприкрыто. Рисуй, как рисуешь ты, а не как кто-либо другой.
    Попытка косить под него - слишком очевидна, это неинтересно.

      It's nothing like Basquiat, it's more like Matisse, but with bad expressions. He just can't do that. But i respect his colour choices, those are good. He would be a good stylist.

    Stop saying "artwork is subjective" Ofcourse it is. The majority would use their subjectivity to determine that this work is garbage! And that can be OBJECTIVELY measured.

    you would think for someone that paints so often he would actually be able to make something nice, but instead this is just ugly and ripped off.
