The knee is made up of joints that combine your upper leg (the femur) with the lower leg bones (tibia and fibula). The kneecap (patella) facilitates knee extension and tracks along the upper surface of this joint. The knee has two major ligaments - one on the outside of the knee and one on the inside. There are also three tendons in the inner part of the knee that help hold the knee in place. Crucial cartilage, nerves, and vascular structures also exist in the knee.
There are many ways that the knee may become instable. If any tendons or ligaments are damaged, stretched, or inflamed, stability issues will arise. Overuse resulting in pain, trauma and injury, and degenerative conditions such as arthritis are common causes of stability problems.
Treatment options include rest and ice as well as physical therapy or surgery in the case of tears or breaks. Bracing provides a temporary option to immobilize a serious injury, but in most cases is less than ideal when freedom of movement is needed to facilitate healing.
This application should be used when pain or weakness of the knee become severe enough that activity is limited and the movement of the body is being changed to deal with pain. Injury, post-injury recovery, wincing pain, and poor physiology are all reason to use the full support application. For slight pain or weakness, or simply to add some confidence to your stride, use the light knee support application. The many applications of KT Tape for knee instability issues allow for support of the weakened anatomy, as well as provide positive signaling to the area for blood flow and lymphatic draining. The properties of the tape allow for this support to be provided while retaining range of motion. This allows for proper and promoted healing. As with most applications, the pain relief is very important as to not cause further injuries while compensating for existing pain.
One of the benefits of KT Tape is that it can offer the same support as a brace without the bulk or restriction in range of movement.
It gives you the support and stability of a knee brace with none of the bulkiness or restrictions of the brace.
The color is purely cosmetic. We just use two different colors in the videos to demonstrate strip one vs. strip 2 etc.
KT Tape is great for injury prevention as well as recovery. The benefits are that it is light weight, moves with your body and provides support without restricting movement or circulation. Give it a try and let us know how it goes!
Sofia,
Try the latest version of the full knee application. There is a link to it in this video. It will provide overall support and stability and pain relief to the knee. If that doesn't work, post your injury on our FB page and one of our clinicians can customize and application for you.
Sounds like you might need a custom application. Go to our "Ask an Expert" Forum on our website and ask your question of you can even post it on FB and we'll get you the app you need. In the mean time I would try the full knee support application. Check our website for an updated version.
Make sure you clean the skin really well, with soap and water and dry thoroughly, or use some rubbing alcohol. Make sure that you leave no tension on the last inch or two as well, so they stick more firmly. Some people says it helps a lot to microwave the tape for 15 seconds or so before applying or to use a hair dryer on the applied tape to help it stick.
In this video it is the original. In the new version we used Pro.
Full knee support is what you should use. I would recommend our latest version of Full Knee support. There is a link to it at the beginning of this video.
@343erikberg If you have tons of hair then trim to 1/8" before taping. If you tape with KT Tape Pro you'll get stronger adhesive and a free body wax when removing the tape:)
KT Tape I use your tape faithfully as a horse reiner. Even with washing and no body hair I have to glue the pro tape down. The adhesive doesn't seem to work for me. With the glue I maybe get 3 days out of it
We have a video just for Osgood. It's here on RUclips or on our website at kttape.com.
Try our latest Full Knee Support application. There is a link to it in this video.
Check out our website and look on our store locator. Any Sports Authority will carry it.
Whenever you have issues with the tape send an email to support@kttape.com and we'll make sure you get tape that stays on.
Just go to our "ask an expert" forum and ask your question there and they will get you a customized application.
The colors are purely cosmetic. We use multiple colors in the videos to differentiate between strip 1 and strip 2, etc.
In this video it is the original. If you follow the link in the description you'll see that the new video features the pro tape.
Um. Wow. Just applied KT Tape to my right knee after dealing with arthritis pain/swelling. I’ve had 30cc’s of blood pulled out and a week later 45cc’s of fluid pulled out. After several weeks of ice and ace bandages and compression sleeves I decided to try KT Tape. Holy smokes! It does provide the support of a brace. But fits under pants etc. I am currently walking around pain free. How long this lasts I don’t know. But as for first impressions… wow.
Still good after nine months?
i just purchased KT tape pro for my knee because i just had knee surgery and the tape works really well so i dont have to wear a brace. thank you KT tape founder!:)
If you will send an email to support@kttape . com they will help you out.
Check out kttape . com and visit our "ask an expert" forum. Search for bursitis and you'll find instructions for how to tape for it.
I used KT Tape on both my knees, general on my bad left knee, and the interior for my right knee when I ran the Tough Mudder this past weekend...no knee pain during, or after, and I suffer from knee pains after just running a mile! This stuff works wonders. I just wish there was a way for it to stay on a little bit better when crawling through mud
@luigiboy82 Trimming the hair really is the best option, but if that's out then you might try spraying the skin with hair spray, let it dry, and then apply the tape. let us know if that helps. thx
@TheGutairchk We have an app that will do both- it's called "KT Tape: Patella Tracking and Runner's Knee". Let us know how that works for you. Thx
It does help. I would recommend the newest version of this application. There is a link to it in the description.
I would start with the newer version of this application. In addition I would recommend you visit our "ask an expert" forum on our website. One of our pros can customize an application for you.
@pcs14 That's great- thx. We have team colors now- check it out at our website.
No. This tape is elastic and will move with your body and the recoil will provide the support and stability of a brace but without the bulky brace.
If you use the new video you'll notice that we use 2.5 strips of the 10 inch pre-cut strips.
Huge facepalm that I have been using my hand to adhere the KT tape to my skin lol! Using the slick side of the paper makes SO much sense hahaha!
@InfindecimalSlice Could you describe more about where your feeling the pain? What type of pain are you feeling- sharp, dull etc?
Yes. I would go with the new version of this app. There is a link to it in this video.
It will provide support and stability, but not knowing the details of your injury I can't promise that it will prevent it, but I can promise that it will not hurt and it will help.
It should. You can also combine the Osgood application with the Full knee support. Just do the Osgood part and then run the two full strips down from your quads and cross under the knee cap. Make sense?
No. Duct tape doesn't breath or stretch. Those are both key elements of KT Tape that allow it to help with your injury.
We have an application specific for Osgood at kttape.com. This one would work for jumper's knee, but I'd recommend the newer version.
I see how this KT Pro tape is gonna be helpful but I've just spent about half a roll just trying to figure out how to place it correctly and even that seems to be peeling off. I would recommend buying two rolls to start with so you can practice with one and use the second one.
Yes it will help with any muscle, tendon or ligament injury.
Have you tried our KT Tape Pro? That should stay on much better in those conditions.
The crossed style is the newer most up to date version. That's what I would recommend.
You can use it whenever you have an injury and you can reapply almost immediately after taking off the previous application. Maybe let you skin breath for a day, but that's it.
Sounds like you might need a custom app. Go to our website and go to the "Ask an Expert" forum or post on our FB page and one of our experts will get you going.
You may want to have it looked at. In the meantime this would be a good application to start with.
i never realized how good knee support videos are...
When the tape crosses you do get additional support with this application.
It should. Most people get between 80-100% pain reduction.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the post. We'd love it if you wanted to tell everyone you know! :)
Thank you for the tutorial I have a relative with knee pain and they apply it but it felt not supported so I look at your video
I have bursitis and tendinitis in my left knee. There are a few different ways to apply the tape to a knee that I’ve tried but I haven’t tried this one yet. I found a different ways that’s a little similar to this one that works great. This tape is such a life changer for me. And I can have it stay on for a least seven days with proper care.
Hey Andre - we hope it helps! We also have an updated version of this instruction video - ruclips.net/video/8S5fUx0pScw/видео.html
The tape in this video is KT Tape Original.
My knee only hurts when i go running or biking. Would i need the full knee support? I tried a muller knee strap before which didn't help. I tried physical therapy. My knee is still hurting after about a year after the injury.
You might have muscle amnesia of the glutes, or some kind of muscle weakness or muscle imbalance. Look into the works of Joel Seedman, Kit Laughlin, Andreo Spina, Athlean X, and Ian Markow. Learn about PAILs and RAILs, do self-myofascial release on your tight muscles/tissues, and start releasing and retraining your neuromuscular system.
Most of the time knee pain, IME, is caused by problems with the ankle/foot, or problems with the hip, or BOTH. Knees are usually not the main culprit. A VERY common problem is that the gluteus muscles (maximus, medias mostly) is dead... it doesn't fire. In fact, if this occurs, all the kinetic energy load gets transferred into the hamstrings, quads, and knees, leading to unnatural amounts of trauma on the knee joint.
Learning how to do lunges properly, how to do proper glute activation exercises will probably help your situation tremendously. Good luck!
Isabel Frye It's not really "full knee support", a tape like this can never do that. I'm a physiotherapist and I find this taping helps just about anyone with knee issues.
Is there a specific type of tape I need to purchase? I've bought some, did this application but it doesn't stop my knee from dislocating upon standing.
I've never had any issues with the pro not sticking, and I run 5-7 miles a day. I usually have the opposite problem, where I have to pull it off after a week. That kills!!!
I have arthrosis . Is this the correct way to tape my knees? I can't find any video that mentions arthrosis. Hope you can help.
Would this be useful after recovery from an acl reconstruction surgery?
Awesome! Thanks for the post!
You should remove it after about a week if it's still on. Otherwise it should start to peel off between 3-7 days. It does hurt a little when removing it. One option is when you're ready to take it off, cover it will lotion or baby oil and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then removal should be a little easier.
Use the newer version.
Thank you!!! It really helps with Basketball, Track, Tennis, and Cross Country!!
@dtachone2002 great post! Glad it's working so well for you.
When u take it off how do u know it is ready do u have to go to the doctors again or will it start to peel off and when u do take it off is it like ripping off a new bandaid that hurts
Does the color you use matter
Would this help stabilize a knee replacement that’s a bit wonky?
Did it drive anybody crazy that she touched the sticky part of the tape with her fingers? 😂
:) Here's a newer version of this application video for you: ruclips.net/video/9kkq4eGgPro/видео.html
yes, totally!
I cringed! Lol
Especially when he asked her not to touch the ends, she did it any way
Touching the sticky part makes no difference in the adhesion unless you have grease or something on your fingers.
one of my friend is 30 years old and he has crepitus in his knee while walking. he doesnt have any other symptoms. can it be because of instability???? can kinesio taping help in dat case to reduce crepitus?
My knee is hurting a bit after taping..I feel the support though! Is it normal since my knee is a bit swollen?!
My son plays soccer and he has been to the doctor, he was diagnosed with sever's disease, what is the best tape and how to tape it.
@Elizabeth Orosz I don't think they mean anything. I think they're just showing the range of colors they have.
I was having a tough time with knee pain for 3 mos. Got into my wifes supply of KT when I was hurting badly. Applied as per instructions for total knee and realized results within 24 hrs. Bought my own. Firm believer. Did the trick for me.
do the colors mean anything? or is it just for demonstration? Thanks!
my daughter has Osgood Schlatter's Disease and she is a figure skater. She also sprained her knee about 2 months ago. She wore a brace for 3 weeks, and did not train for 4 weeks, but still has a lot of knee pain after training for 45 min. What is the best way to tape her knees for more support?
Have any recommendations for taping a post PCL op knee?
i had retiniculum repair surgery done on my left knee a little over 3 months ago and just a few weeks ago on my return to work i began to show new symptoms (i was doing great until then). my PT thinks i may have patella tendonitis. is this a correct way i could tape my knee or do you suggest different? im currently using a different techinique my PT showed me and it helps but just looking for other options...
Are KT Strips waterproof? I am a swimmer with tendonitis and i think this would help
Does this work for support on a torn ACL and lateral meniscus? Meaning, this specific application?
Would this taping method work for support for an ACL injury as I injured it while playing soccer an have had the reconstruction an want to get back to soccer an I got told to tape it for support so...would this be the method to help me? Please help me haha :)
I have recently got a football injury in my knee its more on the outer part of my knee. The doctor said its a mild sprain of the ligament. I was wondering is this the right way to treat my knee?
I have a lateral patella tilt which causes dislocation. I need to tape my knee for stability, should I use this way of taping?
i hurt my knee yestersay when i kicked a soccer ball and i felt something weird below my knee cap do you know what it could be
Does the color matter.
You sure will!
i got surgery on my knee(acl) about a year ago would this Kt tape work the same as a brace?
I suffered slight meniscus tearing/shredding along with a hairline fracture to my right knee due to a hit while play ice hockey. No surgery is needed at the moment but during the summer it might become a possibility. My doctor told me I am able to get back on the ice soon.
Do you recommend this to be the best way to help support my knee from these particular injuries???
i have tried to do this a few times now. when i extend my knee from the 90 degree anglee after taping and totally straighten my leg, the loose skin on my knee cap is kind of all wrinkly, like big wrinkles. Haha, sorry hard to explain. I lowered/redid the side 'support' tapes twice. Is this just normal
?
My knee hurts after i run for longer than 20 mins at around 12km/h. Pain lasts for around 1.5 days after. Is this the taping technique I should use ?
When it doubles over, do you get 2x the healing action?
You're correct!
what taping method would help an injured lcl
I'm putting this on very soon!!!
@LumosInc It was a sharp pain when I stressed my leg, just below the knee. It went away after a week though. It's possible that using a 1 degree incline on the treadmill after a friend's recommendation helped.
Hi LumosInc! What is your suggestion almost after a year a patellar tendon full rupture and surgical repair? Full knee support is the good choice for me, or is there any special way? I play basketball, and ride a bike, and after a heavy-duty use usually I feel some pain my knee, actually, mostly just pressure-sensitive, but it is pretty bad and intense in my upper-inner part of the patella.
Thanks
I think the red and blue tapes are too long, dont you? or does it have to be really that long? cause they're pretty expensive :-)
This might be a dumb question, but does the color of the tape matter?
Does this prevent it from dislocating
Thanks! You rock!
My right knee hurts only when I run or slightly bend my knee(to get into defence stance in basketball)
it doesn't hurt when I walk, sit or just standing
which taping technique I can use with KT Tape? (for basketball practice)
also do you by chance know what type of knee pain i'm having? thanks
Does the color of the tape matter ? my knee only hurts during volley ball season and my shoulder does too . can you wear it during games and stuff ?
the only
Marlene Jaramillo you probably already have an answer after one year but the color of the tape does not matter it actually does not matter unless you want to match your teams colors I'm 17 and play basketball the common injury for athletes in my division is sprained ankle I've tried every color I can reach pink green blue and black and it doesn't matter you may need to stretch your shoulders more due to you being a volleyball player he uses rotation a bit more I think you should rub yourself every so often to relieve lactic acid and tension that built up over a while bcs that can cause pressure on tendons and cause injury
They use different colors to better illustrate where each piece goes
Shave my leg before applying tape? or are hairy legs fine?
I bought a roll of this off eBay. Can't get it to stick at all.
I bought some for my bursitis, will the tape keep my knee from hurting as well or no?
I recently bought the blue kt tape nd I seen that you use different color tapes is each colored tape used specific for something ???
