ITBS (IT band pain) is the most prevalent cause of lateral (outside) knee pain in athletes. Along with ITBS pain at the hip, it accounts for more than 12% of all running injuries. Chances are that if you have pain on the outside of the knee and are active, or have had a rapid increase in activity, you are suffering from issues involving the IT Band at the knee. The IT Band is responsible for moving the leg away from the body, internal rotation of hip, knee extension, and knee flexion (under particular conditions).
Frequently ITBS is seen in runner's who are often running on banked surfaces, doing excessive hill training, or running up and down stairs or bleachers. But, any movement that repeatedly causes the knee to pass back and forth across the 30-degree position can create ITBS at the knees.
Friction and irritation is common as the IT band crosses a bony prominence on the outside of the knee on its way to the shinbone. Pain is usually most noticeable when running downhill and can range from a sharp sensation on the outside of the knee to pain along the entire IT Band. Often the knee feels like it is "seizing", and the sore spot is typically painful to the touch.
Though ITBS is very common, pain at the lateral knee can be caused by any number of issues. Many structures that are responsible for multiple types of movement meet here, and any of them can become inflamed and swollen. Examples of other lateral knee pain issues include LCL strains, fibular head problems, meniscus or cartilage damage, as well as arthritis and others. This application specifically addresses IT Band pain at the knee, but could also be used for any of the above.
Typical treatment includes resting, icing, and light stretching. Massage therapy and the use of a foam roller can also be helpful. The KT Tape application for ITBS at the knee is very helpful in relieving much of the associated pain by relieving pressure over the bony prominence (sore spot) and in turn increases circulation. Functional support is provided to the musculature as well. These functions help relieve pain and promote the healing process.

If you go over the skin with rubbing alcohol first, the tape will stick like glue! I can't get anything else to work like alcohol.
Have been using KT tapes for a few months, but long runs (1-4 hours) on very hot days the ends come off, sometimes the smaller pieces come off entirely. Does the alcohol help you for that? or do you know of other suggestions?
I purchased the Kt Pro tape for my outer knee pain,after running 6k of trails. The pain was severe every time i walked.which was all day! I used this app, and today at work, wearing 30lb tool belt(I'm a sparky) my knee was 75% improved! the knee is still fatigued/injured, but this app helped me a lot. Sometimes going up/down stairs I would feel no pain at all. This will obviously help my knee heal faster :)..p.s shower/shave/alchol or hydrogen peroxide..and dont touch the sticky side!
I got a LCL injury from football and I've been off work 2 weeks now. Am also a Sparky, still limping n in pain most days. How will this help?

I would probably start with the Full Knee Support application if your pain is on the lower right side on the front of the knee. If it's on the outside of the knee I would do this one.

Seems to help a bit with a lateral knee pain injury, thanks. On another note, that's some stare she's got going on. Seems like there's lots being communicated but I can't work out what.
Just a little comment: I had a IT band syndrome a few weeks ago. I used the KT band and it was really helpful. But I didn't run for A MONTH!!! I'm a Orthopedic doctor and I was able to do my own diagnose... so I rest + anti-inflammatory drugs + rehabilitation. Don't use only Kinesio tapping until you are sure of your diagnose!!!! A real IT band syndrome need at least 5 weeks without training!!! Be careful or you'll only aggravate your injury!!!

Although I don't believe my knee pain issues are IT related, this video still helped. May I use this method of taping the side knee in conjunction with taping the whole knee? For extra support? Thank You!
How is "outer knee" different from "lateral knee"? How do you know which tape technique to use, as both videos show different methods?

I got problem with the part that is tape on tape, it doesn't stick at all, and my application won,t stay longer than 30 minutes...

Hi Chris! Do you have any suggestions to improve the adhesion of the tape? I prep the area well (soap & water followed alcohol swab and drying completely) before applying the tape on my outer knee. I also rub the tape down like In the video to make sure it adheres well to my skin. I play a lot of badminton and it helps with the pain however, the tape comes off in between sets and I don't even sweat in the area.
Use alcohol wipes in the areas that you apply. Let it dry then apply the tape.
change the brand of the tape , this one its the cheapest , the better or the original one it's named nasara , look for it
I fell while speed walking this morning, got. a little skinned up. Mainly landed in my right knee, now it is very painful in the popliteal fossa and lateral side of my knee. How should I tape this to aid in healing and decrease my pain?

Matias Baridon KT tape is for both, running and after running. today I was just Dx with ITBS. I was told to ice when sitting, motrin AM, and PM after meals. I got a Rx for knee sleeve. I have to wear it 4 hours a day when walking or standing. it helps with blood circulation. I have to do this for one week. plus with rest and NO RUNNING. oh knee sleeve goes to the middle of my upper leg. I hope this helped a lot. If after a week of this and still have knee pain MRI and possibly a BONE SCAN for me. oh another thing when using ice pack no knee sleeve on.
I taped this method on Sunday afternoon and have had to replace the top (full) piece of tape twice now as the whole length of the dorsal (towards back of knee) side of it has rolled. This happened yesterday afternoon while I was wearing regular clothes and then again last night while I was sleeping. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong? I use the Pro KT Tape and this is starting to become an expensive tape job. Thanks!

I need help! I have some damage to my Lateral Meniscus. It's not TOO bad, but will this help it heal? Or is there a different way to apply the tape for that spot? It's right below my knee cap, to the bottom right (right leg).

hey um my ligaments from my right knee tore or something it hurts a little now its been 6 months and well i still can run hard just slowly and i cant move it crazily or kick hard as do in soccer what do you recommend in my case

So, I am assuming that as a man with hairy legs, I would have to shave my leg. Yes or no?
I applied the KT tape to my own hairy leg yesterday afternoon. It lasted all day, and all during my 15 mile run. I then showered with it and then started to notice some slight peeling. It is still on my outer knee as we speak, but I don't think it's going to last the minimum 4 days they advertise if you have hairy legs!
Kevin Decoteau I shaved just the patch where the tape applies so it doesn't rip them out when I pull it off. Not sure how long it will last. Update: will not last overnight tossing and turning in bed so you'll be applying it with each workout. Update: I followed the instructions in this video and the top layer came right off. If you DARE get your hands on the adhesive, kiss it goodbye. I'm not impressed
The IronMan brand has much better adhesive. My complaint about KT Tape is that it comes pre-split. Yes, this makes for easy applications when the split is called for, but for all others it just creates a weakness in the the adhesion.
The portion where you want to apply the tape, yes. That's my biggest complaint about it and that it doesn't stay on very well
