Summary/Takeaways: The conversation delves into the intricacies of motivation, particularly intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, as well as their impact on performance. It begins with a reflection on the Huberman university experience, highlighting the strategy of convincing oneself to be interested in uninteresting topics, leading to a genuine curiosity and love for certain subjects. They discuss the importance of intrinsic motivation and its relationship with performance, mentioning research on rewarding kids for tasks they were already interested in. The conversation explores the nuances of intrinsic motivation versus extrinsic rewards, noting that while extrinsic rewards can boost productivity, they may also undermine intrinsic motivation. They suggest that finding a sense of purpose in tasks can help motivate individuals, even when intrinsic motivation is lacking. They also discuss the importance of autonomy and framing rewards as symbols of appreciation rather than controlling mechanisms. The conversation concludes by highlighting the benefits of intrinsic motivation, such as improved focus, persistence, and creativity.
Keep going Sir, whatever the drama, this is your private life, we do not care, do whatever you want as far as I am concerned. You bring so much to people this is priceless. Thank you, thank you.
That’s what I do to meetings at work that I am not excited about attending. I would tell myself to look for something interesting, and think about why does this matter, once I find the sense of purpose, I end up being more engaged. Thank you for the great content.
You have helped so many people more than you know! Thank you for helping me take control of my health and get off debilitating mental health drugs!! All with my diet! I support your work and thank you for changing my life for the better with your amazing podcasts and information. Don’t let them get to you! Keep doing what you do!
I agree. Who cares if he's a sociopath who lied to a bunch of women about being exclusive, gave them STDs, made one do IVF, lied about having a lab at Stanford, etc. Even if he killed or raped a few people, it wouldn't matter at all as long as he makes informative videos! It's not like there are any other people sharing the same useful info on the internet, and it's not like most studies are freely available to read for anyone who wants to.
Andrew you’re the best ❤ The drama is because you’re @ the top. Jealousy is a b**** 😢 watching and applying your content has improved my and many other lives. thank you so much 😘
So when you substitute intrinsic motivation with a sense of purpose, effectively its a substitution with an extrinsic motivator right? But in some cases extrinsic motivators are okay
I am 49 and it's been 3 month I do work out in front on my TV. Fitness cardio flexibility in 30mn. I do it everyday. And I don't want to do it all the time but I still do it. Sometimes I miss a day but at the end, most of the days I work out. And I don't like it but I am in the train so I stay in it.
I enjoy the whole conversation. I was watching half the video with almost full concentration. However, the constant sentence filler and the host repeating himself due to his apprehensiveness in articulating the question precisely make the whole podcast harder to comprehend. The host certainly needs to brush up on his question delivery.

@@Kuk0sanhow so? let's say i want to generate motivation to go to the gym. the biggest "why" is to get jacked isn't that an extrinsic reward of some sort? same can be said for studying hard. let's say the "why" is to graduate with honors. it's what gives studying hard meaning but it's kind of the same with extrinsic? or is it not
@@spine_skull Yes getting 'jacked' would serve the purpose of seeking external validation - this is extrinsic reward. Going to the gym to develop functional physique, good health and longevity is an intrinsic reward. The good physique just so also happens to attract attention but you're not focusing on that part. As for studying - what do you hope to get with the 'honors'? Is it because you think you should make your parents proud? Or impress some people with your degree? That's still seeking external validation. If you study a subject that you find curious by itself, that's an intrinsic reward. And in that case you won't even need or care about 'honors' because you can even study what you're curious about through the vast internet for free! You can still get 'honors' if you want even if you're just studying for curiosity but again it won't be the main thing you're focusing on.
@@Kuk0san yea since the vid said that extrinsic is not a good way to motivate oneself. and one should use 2 ways to get motivation 1. intrinsically by getting curious about the "how" or 2. through meaning and purpose which is thinking hard about the "why" so you're saying intrinsic is the same with meaning/purpose, but the vid said it's 2 different things. and im curious about how does extrinsic motivation differ from meaning/purpose

Thank you for the short clips & information to consider. I enjoy Adam Grant’s work.
"Intrinsic motivation is often driven by curiosity about the how. A sense of purpose comes from really thinking hard about the why."

I find the 6 second rule works well for me. It’s like having the one main second but then 5 additional ones to appease your dopamine addiction.
Great timing!
As Mike Tyson will say, discipline is doing something you don’t want to do and do it like you love it.

The video that we all needed
Discipline is the key. If we wait for motivation or try to manufacture it, we won't get much done.
Happy Easter Andrew🐣

how do extrinsic rewards differ from purpose/meaning? isnt it kind of the same?
Purpose and meaning comes from within i.e. intrinsic, extrinsic rewards are material goods or services coming from outside.
