How to Remove Serpentine Belt and Inspect Pulleys (Example: 2003 Toyota 4Runner V8)

- Here I demonstrate how to remove the serpentine belt on a 2003 Toyota 4Runner. The only tool you will need is a long serpentine belt tool with a 14mm shallow socket, or a long ratchet or breaker bar to pull the automatic tensioner back. After removing the belt I explain the process of how to check the pulleys and identify which ones have issues. In this video I find that the tensioner pulley is bad as well as the idle pulley.

Thank you!, Helped another today out in the deep abyss we call life and the metric system
Thanks sir. Very informative
Thanks for this video! Helped me
Chris W, glad this was helpful!
wish you had ran the engine so we could hear the noise. I have a very squeaky noise. Timing belt replaced 15K ago, with pulleys and belts. This doesn't help a lot, but it helps. Thanks.
The tensioner pulley was so seized I didn’t want to cause more damage to other components. Honestly it probably would have just shredded the belt if I would have run it.
Great video was all the help down to the 14 mm
Paul Hicks, glad it was helpful! Good luck on your diy!
Thank you
Hey bud any chance you have the part numbers for the idler pulley and the tensioner idler
The fan support bearing also makes noise on these at high mileage. Pulleys last quite a while and can be re greased (yes sealed bearings can be packed). If you replace only use OEM or NSK. That’s how they lasted so long in the first place.
I need your help, from the toyota 4runner limited v8 2003 what is the order of the pistons, ask me to help please.
To replace any pulley or tensioner belt
Can't remove te fan ?
Do timing belt have to be changed every 1000k when hard driving
So Toyota recommends to change the timing belt as regular maintenance every 100k or every ten years. However, I currently own a 03 4Runner with 200k miles and the timing belt has never been changed. It’s just one of those things I have to be aware of knowing it’s probably getting to be about that time at this point.
How many miles did it have when this occurred
blake the snake, 130,000 miles were in my vehicle when this happened. I know people who have 250 on theirs though and never had this problem.
I have pulled quite a few trailers some with this vehicle so that could have been some of the problems behind it.
Can it be done through the top only or need to get in through the bottom just for the belt?
If you are just changing your serpentine belt you could probably do it just from the top. However, removing things on the bottom would make it a little easier for aligning the bottom pulleys.
@@bullseyenate231 yea, i was just inspecting the engine bay, and the radiator hose, fan, radiator reservoir tank seems to be in the way. my arm doesn't fit and cannot get to the tensioner pulley
@@KGX470 you should be able to change the belt without having to remove all of that, if you are just changing the belt. Make sure you have a long extended ratchet or serpentine belt tool. This will enable you to get the tool all the way down there without having to try to get your arms and hands down in there.
