    To those who have fan noise issues, I wanted to share some insights. I bought the 7610 about a month ago and the first days the fan noise was just insane, even when doing very basic tasks. It was like the sound of an airplane landing. I contacted Dell and one of their support members updated a few things remotely. What I know is that he updated the bios and some of the battery performance settings (power mode was set to balanced). It really lowered the fan noise a lot, but it was still rather noisy, so their support offered to come over for a proper check. They replaced both fans and the thermal paste, as it was too dry/hard according to the guy from Dell. After he did that, the laptop became MUCH more quiet! It doesn't make any noise when performing basic tasks, and even with more demanding tasks (Photoshop, streaming) the fans are very quiet. Only when playing games, the fans might become noisy, but that's quite normal. So in general, the fan noise almost disappeared.

    (Dell Optiplex 7020 PC, Got this in 2021)
    I was putting on RUclips, having a drink before bed. The PC was recently making quite a bit of noise but I didn’t think anything of it. I put my drink away and fell asleep. I woke up and I heard a very loud noise, I thought it was my furnace heater so I just payed back down checking my phone. However, I looked at my computer which should’ve been in sleep mode. The power button was blinking orange (which I only see during startup) and I walked to it. I turned my head trying to hear it and yeah, that loud noise was coming from the computer. I got an Inspiron 3910 from Costco a couple weeks ago. I finally got fed up with the fan noise and decided to call them, or chat online with them. The Dell rep, Malcolm asked me a few questions and we ended up deciding to send a technician out to my home. That was this morning, an hour later they updated the ticket saying the technician will show up this Monday. Provided they resolve the issue on Monday, I'll be quite impressed at their service. BTW I live in the boonies, it will take they tech at least an hour to get here from a major corridor. It should be a nice peaceful drive for him/her though.

    Thanks for the video! I have a Dell OptiPlex 7070. When it was new it would heat up occasionally and the fan would turn on and cool things down. More recently it began to heat up more frequently and the fan was often on at high speeds I did the BIOS update. I bought Dell Vostro 5515 R5500u on friday and got slapped with the thermal paste issue, I am sure! I updated the bios and all but the thing just kept sounding like a damn lathe machine! The fans ran insanely high on 100 % CPU and 2 % CPU. I found your video that same night and your information provided me with knowledge I needed to speak with managers and claim an errored machine the next day (you are awesome and thank you!) I am waiting for their verdict and if they tell me all is normal I will shove that laptop under their pillow to haunt them! They did offer to replace it with the other machine straight away but I was afraid it will have the same issue, if not sooner, then later.
    I liked the laptop - I chose it myself after much research, I wanted a decent keyboard, nice minimalist design, the ryzen processor and upgradability options - but I declined and now I am praying for a refund (physical stores are not legally obliged to accept returns, unless there is proof of factory error).
    I did ask the manager to compare my machine with the one in store, but the store was loud in itself and my stupid Hell decided it will not sound so very terrible as it did in my house, although it still did not show any dynamic and the fans were running constantly. I had one tab open and it acted as I was rendering a 5GB video! If I get that refund (please, please) I am not sure what to do next: order Vostro online and see if it's nice and quiet? (online purchase can legally be returned in 14 days, no questions asked) I saved up for a new laptop, but sadly am still too broke to afford the one I really want, Thinkpad T series. Are you familiar with the Dell Vostro 5515? What do you think of it? Have you heard any other issues about it? Thanks again for this video, to me, it was a blessing!

    It's not a thermal paste issue. Although, finding the baseplate is only aluminum and not copper isn't helping. The fan profiles are out of wack. On some, fan won't even run at all until CPU is near 80C. And even when the fan does run it could be at minimal idle or crank right up to 100%. Along with momentary sporadic system halts. And drivers have nothing to do with it, it's all controlled by the Super-IO. There is no DIY solution, can only be rectified by proper BIOS update.

      Fan States are rather set to PASSIVE than ACTIVE, that seems to be the issue here. I do own a Inspiron 15 3511 and have the same heating issue, changed the dried up factory thermal paste with CoolerMaster Pro thermal paste, the difference in temps at idle were quite noticeable however the fans still won't spin or spin slow even if the laptop 75+ deg C, after some research I indeed found some about the cooling method of Passsive and Active. I was also unable to find any processor fan control utility that would help.

    I have just returned my Dell Inspiron 7620 2 in 1 for this same reason - loud fan noise, warm to hot surfaces, and fairly sluggish performance, even with minimal load and low CPU percentage showing in use. I initiated a support call and Dell were going to send an engineer with replacement parts including a new heatsink (and presumably including the paste too?!) but then the replacement parts were not available and so I got tired of waiting and just initiated a return as it was still within the return window. Shame really, as it was a good looking laptop but the fan noise all the time drove me to distraction and I lost confidence in the machine. First time buying Dell. Interested to note that Chris still recommends them. Will think about it.

    • @ComputerStuff
      @ComputerStuff  Год назад +1

      Thanks for this thoughtful comment @korblox6603 I'm sorry to hear your experience with it wasn't stellar. I wouldn't have wanted to wait either - but yes they would have replaced the thermal paste which likely would have resolved the issue. It's a shame that Dell can't get its act together on this because its a little too common.
      I do still recommend Dell for the following reasons (I'd like to caveat that I also recommend Lenovo, ACER, and other brands too, it's not like I'm a Dell fanboy). Dell's typcially have some of the more sophisticated and easier to work with BIOS (helpful for power users), they have good secrity features, they tend to make their machines out of good materials, well thought out design. They are not a perfect company however. For what its worth out of every 100 Dells we sell maybe 10 have the overheating issue. We then fix it for our customers. Without question, you shouldn't HAVE to fix this yourself as an end user and Dell should resolve this in manufacturing, but nevertheless I do still think Dell makes some nice products. Best of luck with your search for a new machine - happy to answer any consulting questions if you have them.

      Try to update the BIOS on the computer and see if that resolves that issue. That can be done from Dell's website for free.

    So which gaming laptops are the quietest/coolest?

    • @ComputerStuff

      No gaming laptop is going to be quiet. They all have honkin' fans to keep the laptops operating.

    Hello, I know this is an older video, but I just bought a new Inspiron 16. Beautiful laptop but terrible fan... Did anyone have the issue, that the fan doesn't spin at all or just very slightly and then every 5 minutes the fan goes up to 100% speed for one minute? I already talked to the support but no fast solution was found, might tell them about the thermal paste issue, but it seems more like a sensor or software problem since the fan is not spinning (= cooling) for a long period and then suddenly notices that the laptop is getting to hot and then goes all in for a short time and repeats that over and over.

      Try updating the BIOS. See if that helps.

      Hello, I have a dell XPS 9700 and the fan noise it's driving me crazy, although not super loud I still don't want to hear them when just browsing the web. I did a lot of research and spent a lot of time talking to dell customer service. They told me to disable intel turbo boost withing bios which I did and improved things but the fans are still running very often. What I do most of the time is go to dell power manager, then thermal management, and I keep changing the thermal setting from optimized to quiet, it shuts down the fans for a few minutes until they kick off again so then I change again from quiet to optimized, the fans shut down again for a few minutes until they start again so I change it back to quiet and so on. It's very frustrating! After spending so much money in a laptop I never thought I would have to deal with this problem. Sending it back to the US was nos possible as I lived in a remote area of south america. I guess I will try the thermal paste solution and see how it goes.
