      It’s because there’s little choice if you want a sleek and modern Windows alternative to the MacBook. It’s a popular alternative that’s even more stylish and cutting edge in design.

The problem (throttling to 0.4Ghz) only occurs when using the internal speakers. No issues when using Bluetooth speakers. I have reported this problem to Dell support, and after completing all the steps they suggested, the problem still persists. They will escalate this problem to the engineers, but honestly, I don't trust that they will find a solution. I have also realized that the problem disappears by using ThrottleStop 6.5 and activating SeepShift to 32 (no disable turbo option), and the overall performance is greatly improved. The clock is always at full speed when using A/C. I have not tested this solution when using the battery, but I would need to adapt the battery profile to reduce battery consumption. I commented on that XPS 13 Plus -v- MB Air M2 video that choosing the XPS was an eyebrow raising conclusion. I was onside if the keyboard on the Mac was not objectively working for you, but choosing the XPS was not something I expected. The reason was my own research suggested that the XPS 13 Plus was a hot mess on the internet. Where as the MB M2 256GB drive issue was a storm in a tea cup, lots of buyers were having bad times with the XPS; real and present.
    In all the M2 reviews on YT everyone was making much of the SSD, yet the XPS 13 Plus reviews never mentioned the many known issues. I suspected that the YT cabal was at it again and it is nice to see this mentioned now. People can still buy the XPS 13 Plus, but these QC problems are worth being told about. So my suggestion is that do not buy the XPS until the problems are resolved, and let us be honest, W11 (MS) has still been unable to optimise the little cores in the 12th-gen, so all in all, it may be worth giving this gen a wide-berth. In fact, I bought a SP8 (11th-gen) instead of the 12th gen mess for a big discount (£400 off new).

    It's not a surprise at all, Dell is a disaster, notably the XPS series. I don't know a single person, in the laboratory where I work, who doesn't have a problem with their XPS 13 or 15.
    Mine has a 8th gen i7 and it's impressive how hot it gets when browsing or watching a youtube video. Moreover, the trackpad doesn't work anymore and Intel Support Assistant doesn't work properly neither, since several months it can't find any driver or display any information about the PC.
    My girlfriend's XPS 13 7th gen i7 has also problems with heating and with external devices.
    I wouldn't recommend buying a Dell XPS to anyone, they're an absolutely catastrophe.

    I've had nothing but QC issues with Dell in the last six months. Especially with the Latitudes with end users, the last only running for 48 hours and the drive died because it was put in crooked from factory. Out of 200 units we've had 40 have the motherboard go out.

      I've had the exact same experience. The failure rates of these Latitude laptops are so unacceptably bad that it's caused me to try to petition that we switch away from Dell and go with the Lenovo ThinkPads or HP Elitebooks. It seems that every other day in our US branch, we find out that another thunderbolt controller, motherboard, or other random component on these Dell laptops has failed. It wastes our help desk's time dealing with Dell technical support.

Always breaks within months each time it gets fixed. One time after a motherboard replacement, they sent it back from the factory with a broken fan controller that was always on full blast straight out of the box, this immediately showed up on the bios diagnostic, *They did not even check the bios diagnostic before sending it back*, they do not have the most basic quality control measures.

    For me, owning this laptop for about 3 months as a college, I so thankfully discovered the "my dell" application and in the power settings found the fan/cooling settings and set it to cool. The fans rarely get loud and the laptop stays cool, I have not experienced throttling, also battery life has not been an issue for me because I almost always run it with battery saver on and I have survived 9+ hour days without charging except when I get back to my room. On the other hand, I been having issues with the trackpad being HELLA buggy, and that has not been fun.
    edit: for the record, I have the i7-1280 chipset with 16 gb of ram, 1tb of storage and a touch screen. I called dell when the issue first came up. they didn't help much, although they tried, but they did show me how to run a hardware scan when restarting the PC that actually fixes the trackpad issue every time. It also is very clearly a software issue, and I just now have installed 5 driver updates that dell very recently dropped for this laptop so hopefully that fixes it. It is a new device with new tech and a new form factor, so I am not surprised that I had issues with the trackpad, I just wish they actually made sure it was all good before shipping customer devices.
    I had also reinstalled windows but It was not a full clean reinstall with all the steps he took, it was just a normal reinstall through the windows settings with the "delete all files" option selected.

  • @belizarius_997
    @belizarius_997 2 года назад +4

    Dell is merely a system integrator here, assembling laptops from multiple parts. Many people buying Windows laptops don't realise just how many vendors are inside. Hardware manufacturers (wifi, graphics, etc) usually don't care about individual customers and send them to each other and back when things go south. Application-wise it's even worse as various software vendors have different release schedules, not necessarily in line with Microsoft releases. As a result, there is no such thing as a problem-free Windows laptop, never has been and never will be. There is no way around it.

    • @richardm123
      @richardm123 2 года назад +2

      Hardware having pieces from many vendors is nothing new - not even to the computer/laptop world. Apple doesn't own its own factory for every single part in its laptops, but rather they maintain attention to the quality that they're getting from their vendors. To me, Dell's problem is just a general lack of care about the quality of the product once its in the hands of the consumer. Its not the consumer's job to fix cost cutting of the manufacturer(s) - especially when they pay top dollar for the product.

    • @belizarius_997
      @belizarius_997 2 года назад +1

      @@richardm123 At this point, we don't know whether this was hardware or software related (or both). I totally agree with your comment though - this is Dell's design dept to make sure all components are integrated and work together. It is also Dell's QA job to test, identify and remove any fault before shipping to customers, so they don't have to go through what we saw here. My comment was to focus on the long-term user experience, which for Windows laptops can be particularly challenging to individual customers. In our profit-driven/corner-cutting world, there is no way 10+ SW/HW vendors would collaborate with each other to provide a smooth user experience. Last, but not least, I also had Dell's laptop back in the day - my atrocious experience with their customer service prompted me to comment on this video.

  • @DylanChau
    @DylanChau 2 года назад +2

    It is asinine that the average consumer would basically need to learn to perform a clean install just to get a reliable experience with this thing. Even if it's a great product after you perform a clean install, it certainly doesn't deserve any accolades for not being great out of the box. This kind of long-term testing is great and honestly should be more valuable than initial reviews that get posted after only a few days or a week of usage. I've seen products go from horrible to great, and I've seen products go from great to horrible. And most often it's the latter, but reviewers are more often incentivized to post at embargo and move on to the next thing rather than come back and revisit.

    • @disadadi8958
      @disadadi8958 2 года назад

      Well, I think the ability to perform a clean install should be required from any Windows user. I am not a hater, but it's a fact that clean installing saves you from a lot of issues down the line. Knowing how to perform one is really not that much asked.
      Of course, a product should be set up and ready to go out of the box. However, I knew that manufacturers tend to mess it up and went with a laptop without an OS installed at all. Then I definitely know what's up with the operating system and what software is installed on it. A big plus is avoiding any bloatware you don't want (excluding those included in modern windows...)

I've been unhappy with their quality control since the released the 5410 and 7410 and newer. They're loud, hot, the keyboards aren't flat, power buttons aren't seated nicely, the trackpads have even been loose. I bought some Lenovo ThinkPad X Carbon G9, exactly the same hardware specs as the 7420 model we've been getting. Same processor, same clock speed, same amount of RAM, same SSD size. They run soooooo much cooler, quieter, faster (because they're not getting as hot) and haven't had any issues with things like sleep, blue screens, audio dying or sound popping/crackling etc.
    Why is Dell being so shoddy with their quality? It's not like I'm buying a £300 laptop from Acer for goodness sake. I'm spending over £1000 per laptop for colleagues in a business, where we need laptops to work because, you know, we need them to DO work! It's so frustrating and infuriating!
    Dell, do better.

    Haven't heard anything about this except on your channel. As a happy Dell XPS 13 Plus owner, wondering if I got lucky AND Dell addressed QC issues? The biggest problems I have on Windows machines stem from Windows 11 itself esp. resuming from standby.

    Dell need to thank you for pointing out their problems, it gives them a chance to fix them for future products, because otherwise they are not going to get repeat custom. Thanks again. J

    I bought myself a Dell laptop a few years ago. It was a big moment for me, this was the first new computer I had ever owned after a long string of used and hand-me-down systems.
    Right out of the box the keyboard had multiple keys that didn’t work. Instead of replacing it, Dell sent a technician down to look at it. He replaced the keyboard; which worked great. But he damaged several other ribbon cables in the process, which left me with a non-functioning trackpad.
    That’s when Dell sent me a new laptop. This one had a misaligned matte coating on the screen, leaving an uncoated edge in the upper-left corner of the display.
    Then they put out a BIOS update that completely messed up my RAID0 SSD setup, costing me everything that was on the drives.
    Finally, a few months out of warranty, the battery failed, swelled and cracked the palmrest.
    Never again. I’d sooner shit in my own hands and clap than buy anything from Dell. They couldn’t pay me to take a Dell computer at this point.

    I actually saw this video the day it came out and I had to do some self thinking. I love the design of the XPS 13+, how clean and how sleek it is. But after watching this review and after considering my options for the past 4/5 days I finally cancel my order and instead ordered for an Asus ROG Zephyrus g14 instead. Thank you so much for your transparency.

    Thanks for following up. I am so sick of seeing hyped up reviews of products that turn out to be rubbish - and this is coming from a very pissed off Alienware 17r3 owner. The 17r3 was a nightmare product for many users - I will very likely never buy another Dell laptop (their monitors are excellent though).

    Great video, I had an XPS 13" a couple years ago, same issues you're explaining. Even my Asus M16 (fresh install of windows) has a glitch where the iGPU on the 12900H downclocks itself (not due to heat). So I'll see 70% usage while watching RUclips and have to restart to fix it. This usually happens after the laptop has been in sleep mode, or I've used it on battery and then plug it back in, but it's more random than anything else.

    Finally someone mentioning the pooooor quality control of Dell. I had terrible experience with XPS15 and XPS13 straight after unboxing them. Sticky keyboard, faulty powerbutton, static noises and one of the unit blue screened at Windows10 first time set up. Really wonder how laptops with such unacceptable quality control are still on market with an experience price tag.

    That's insane. I've been using an HP model 15-ef2013dx from best buy out 12gb or ram for under $450 6 months ago. I'm having zero issues and I do alot with that laptop.

    My XPS 15 from 2017 had the same problems. All fixed by a clean install. Works still today

    Hi Josh, was looking for videos comparing XPS 13 and Surface Pro 2-in-1 for work purposes, and stumbled across your work. This tidy comment for algorithmic purposes ends with one word: subscribed. Cheers from Montréal, excellent job.

      @@JustJoshTech ! If you want to tell us which is the best 2-in-1 for non- programmers, later, I'd watch that too. ;) I think I'm getting a Surface Pro 8 i7 instead of the 9, ie moderating the price à bit.

    As a Dell technical manager im ashamed..
    Im aware of the need to reinstall windows once in a while...
    BUT TO REINSTALL ON SUCH NEW HIGH END F*CKING EXPENSIVE LAPTOP FOR THESE ISSUES, AND THE EXTRA STEP TO DO SO WITH THE IRST DRIVER!!!
    Im sorry on behalf of our engineers for making all this pain and not fully testing it and releasing it just to "RENOVATE" and "SHOW WHO'S THE BOSS"
    I hope You'd read this comment.
