    Fun fact: Hosmer had an OPS+ of at least 100 every year but 2019 (94). He had a 113 in 400 PAs when he got traded last year. I'm not sure why people always talked about him like he was that awful. I mean he wasn't worth THAT money, but when a guy is literally above average offensively for all but one year, that's not exactly what I would call a TERRIBLE contact

    • @JonathanMartin884
      @JonathanMartin884 Год назад +1

    • @Lowtech14
      @Lowtech14 Год назад

      Another fun fact: no other team wanted him for more than the minimum. I’m not positive, but I believe he graded out as the worst defensive first baseman in 2021. And he’s a clogged artery on the basepaths.

    • @JonathanMartin884
      @JonathanMartin884 Год назад +2

      @@Lowtech14 According to FG he was middle of the road as a defensive first basemen that year. Freddie Freeman was actually worse than Hosmer. But, he was the worst or one of the worst in most years since he had been here. Still, without him, SD may not be a FA destination like it has become.

  • @Jrodsly
    @Jrodsly Год назад +3

    I think my favorite moment about the Eric Hosmer contract is when his agent tried to lash out at people who use analytics to point out that Hosmer was likely to be a risky big signing by trying to say something like "This is a day where analytics was proven wrong", only for the analytics community to be proven completely right about Hosmer not long after the contract was signed. I get that an agent is supposed to talk up the players they're working with, but to see that age so poorly so quickly was hilarious to me. I don't even dislike Hosmer or anything. I don't dislike the Padres. I just thought talking that big talk only to have it backfire so spectacularly was the funniest part of the whole saga.

    • @greendude608
      @greendude608 Год назад

      The funny thing about that is that part of our front office was completely against signing him for that reason, I guess at least it got the ball rolling and proved the team was willing to spend money to win and we ended up getting Machado the following year

  • @michaelb3581
    @michaelb3581 Год назад +7

    It’s business. If you make a mistake, you just keep moving forward. It’s as simple as that. Hosmer was a not mistake overall, but more so a risk worth taking at the time, and now maybe considered a stepping stone in the kind of business the Padres are currently doing. Right after they signed Manny.

    2:10 It did not "end up biting them in the butt." Hosmer was the first big free agent to come to SD and paved the way for Manny to actually look at SD as a serious place to land. The whole structure of the Padres right now is because of Hosmer, so even though he mostly sucked while he was here, and he was basically a pariah by the time he left, he was still instrumental in making the Padres what they are. And I think Seidler will eat his bad contract any day of the week for the benefit it earned long term.

    I don't know about that. Hosmer's wRC+ before hitting FA went under 100 twice, was 102 in 2016, and barely reached near 125 twice. Hosmer had three terrible seasons in 2012 with a 1.3 WAR, -0.2 WAR in 2014, and a whopping zero WAR in 2016 (Fangraphs). This is an up and down player that the Padres FO should have easily spotted. Someone that shouldn't have ever reach a contract over 70M let alone over 100M.

    Seems like all or at least most of the contracts signed the past few months will turn out to
    be horrendous ( for the teams ) in the long term. Hosmer's contract will be looked at as a
    nothing compared to other contracts in the future especially when teams are now starting to sign long term
    contracts to guys just coming up and having 2 great years. The teams sign them for a boat
    load of money while the player's skills really lasted only a few years and they don't turn out
    to be great ball players or what the teams thought that they were getting.

He was not the best clubhouse guy, attempted to ruin the Juan Soto deal by declining his part in the trade, and did not perform consistently throughout a season not once since signing to San Diego. Wouldn’t be surprised if they sent him to Boston with the unspoken condition of he never gets another shot in the league again since he was ungrateful and didn’t want to play in Washington. All I’m saying is, it’s a tough world when a Major League team doesn’t want to pay you the minimum let alone keep you on the roster for FREE.
