Is this contract the worst one in baseball right now?
yes
The Heyward contract is in its last year
Bobby Bonilla is still being paid...
Nah..the strasburg deal
The one Dansby Swanson’s about to sign with the Cubs
When players put up career numbers in a contract season it drives me nuts. it just shows what they could do if they were really focused and making a full effort.
That’s like when you go to court for child support and they take one good paycheck and say you can make that every week. Nah fam that’s bullshit.
Judge going to be a huge flop too. Not this bad but he will never be close to as good as he was this year
Machados looks pretty good so far
Nah. Not nuts. /
I’ve been saying this shit for years!
3:06 the walk off “hit” he failed to catch and reaction will always and forever be hilarious 🤣🤣
Or when he pimped that “catch” from Machado that was suppose to end the game
I think it’s hilarious that even though the Red Sox wouldn’t really have to pay him at all they still didn’t want him on their roster
Well the Padres didn't want him so bad that they are willing to Pay his contract just to have him play for another team.
As a padres fan hes a literal team cancer like he will turn an entire clubhouse against its management if he feels slighted, he did it to jayce tingler and andy green
"I'm gonna pay you 13 million to fuck off"
- AJ Preller
@@hairdressershusband unironically true, were paying him to basically not be on the team
We were trying to tell the redsox fans but you really just have to see it to believe it. Hos is groundball machine, is slow as hell, and plays subpar defense
Justice for Luke Voit
Voit sucks. He thought he deserved playing time over Rizzo lol
@@stujohn6569 never said he was good haha
being paid $39M to NOT play baseball is absolutely absurd. I'd have his ass cleaning the parking lots or some shit
He went from being slightly above average to having a " career year " at just the right time, then went to crap...not the first time that's happened
Sometimes in baseball one has to overpay because players are overlooking your team. Once u get said player to agree to an overpayment then other players join in. This happened to the Mets a while back, they overpaid for Pedro Martinez to be able to bring other talents i.e Carlos Beltran, Moises alou ect
All I can say as a Padres fan is eh, you win some you lose some
Fun fact: Hosmer had an OPS+ of at least 100 every year but 2019 (94). He had a 113 in 400 PAs when he got traded last year. I'm not sure why people always talked about him like he was that awful. I mean he wasn't worth THAT money, but when a guy is literally above average offensively for all but one year, that's not exactly what I would call a TERRIBLE contact
Exactly, but that doesn't fit the narrative of the video. I would also contend that without Hosmer there is no Manny and no Padres as we currently know them.
Another fun fact: no other team wanted him for more than the minimum. I’m not positive, but I believe he graded out as the worst defensive first baseman in 2021. And he’s a clogged artery on the basepaths.
@@Lowtech14 According to FG he was middle of the road as a defensive first basemen that year. Freddie Freeman was actually worse than Hosmer. But, he was the worst or one of the worst in most years since he had been here. Still, without him, SD may not be a FA destination like it has become.
I think my favorite moment about the Eric Hosmer contract is when his agent tried to lash out at people who use analytics to point out that Hosmer was likely to be a risky big signing by trying to say something like "This is a day where analytics was proven wrong", only for the analytics community to be proven completely right about Hosmer not long after the contract was signed. I get that an agent is supposed to talk up the players they're working with, but to see that age so poorly so quickly was hilarious to me. I don't even dislike Hosmer or anything. I don't dislike the Padres. I just thought talking that big talk only to have it backfire so spectacularly was the funniest part of the whole saga.
The funny thing about that is that part of our front office was completely against signing him for that reason, I guess at least it got the ball rolling and proved the team was willing to spend money to win and we ended up getting Machado the following year
It’s business. If you make a mistake, you just keep moving forward. It’s as simple as that. Hosmer was a not mistake overall, but more so a risk worth taking at the time, and now maybe considered a stepping stone in the kind of business the Padres are currently doing. Right after they signed Manny.
At this point I’m just living for iTalk uploads.
You forgot the part where he went on record saying he didnt see any issues in his game. Glad we got rid of him, 3 more years of paying that bum and its over
Its the season of giving and this guys out here giving absolute bangers!
Hosmer wasn't an average player with the Padres in 2022. He had a 113 OPS+, so he was 13% better than average. But still a great video!
Yeah but a 113 OPS + for a 1B is pretty average.
Yeah while hitting like .370 in April and what was his average after?
As a padres fan i hope no other team has to watch this guy play ever again like we did unless it's in april
I concur
agreed
I live in Kansas City and after he was traded to there Red Sox I got to see him play against the royals for the first time in forever and it was great
He never should have left the Royals.
Never trust a man’s contract year. Also is Preller always that way when signing a new player or does his face/body language while Hosmer is putting on the Padres uniform at the press conference say it all.
Hosmer has 90% of padres fans blocked on twitter cause we hated him so much
😂 140/7 for Hosmer, echos a declined power 280/11 for Xander 🤣 great job
italk videos to start the day is always a W
2:10 It did not "end up biting them in the butt." Hosmer was the first big free agent to come to SD and paved the way for Manny to actually look at SD as a serious place to land. The whole structure of the Padres right now is because of Hosmer, so even though he mostly sucked while he was here, and he was basically a pariah by the time he left, he was still instrumental in making the Padres what they are. And I think Seidler will eat his bad contract any day of the week for the benefit it earned long term.
This is what I tell everyone. He didn’t perform up to his contract, everyone agrees on that. But he was the first signing for San Diego that showed we want to win and we’re willing to spend
Nope. Wil Myers got around a $86 million extension before Hosmer signed there.
@@KB8SD Wil Myers signed a....what? An extension! Good! Hosmer was a, say it with me, "free agent." Good. Look at you! See, you can do it. You _can_ read!
Hence my statement about how he was the first big *free agent* signing. But, thanks for playing! :)
@@JonathanMartin884 no need to be a jackass
@@prodigy2652 One flippant comment deserves another
The Padres like to throw a lot of money at things and see if they stick... honestly there are probably several worse contracts
I'd put Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin's contracts as worse than Hosmer's.
This is why I hate when players have career years during a contract season, then don’t contribute after they get paid. I understand you should try to make as much money as possible, but once you get paid, you should continue to contribute as if every year is a contract year. I hate when players stop performing after they get the bag
We will be doing a Stanton-Judge-Xander-correa videos in 8yrs 😂
W day when this man uploads.
That's every day lol
@@thisguy8106 😂
"Doesn't mean they suck at their jobs"
I don't know about that. Hosmer's wRC+ before hitting FA went under 100 twice, was 102 in 2016, and barely reached near 125 twice. Hosmer had three terrible seasons in 2012 with a 1.3 WAR, -0.2 WAR in 2014, and a whopping zero WAR in 2016 (Fangraphs). This is an up and down player that the Padres FO should have easily spotted. Someone that shouldn't have ever reach a contract over 70M let alone over 100M.
I don't think most non padres fans realize how much we HATE homer. Like its not that he sucked cause he did but he turned the entire clubhouse against the manager last year so he wouldn't get traded just to absolutely suck down the stretch and other than pitching was the reason the 2021 padres collapsed. Not to mention his defense is absolutely atrocious and he refused to work on it or ever get better. I don't even care that were still paying him, he is the definition of a team cancer
And Hosmer gots a world championship ring to boot! Should of stayed with the Royals! He was an all-star with the Royals Padres always suck.
Well I know one thing. The Atlanta Braves are NOT going to overpay to keep a player. They offered Dansby Swanson $100 M for 6 years. Dansby countered with $140M. The Braves never retuned his call. Now the Cubs have him for $170 M Guarantee contact for 7 years.
Absolutely unwilling to make adjustments to ultra high groundball bat path. His stubborn attitude is a career killer. He is not worth picking up.
That's why you don't give out ridiculous contract
The Hosmer contract is bad, but the Cincinnati Reds are STILL paying Ken Griffey Jr in 2022. Griffey retired YEARS AGO.
Wait why !
Seems like all or at least most of the contracts signed the past few months will turn out to
be horrendous ( for the teams ) in the long term. Hosmer's contract will be looked at as a
nothing compared to other contracts in the future especially when teams are now starting to sign long term
contracts to guys just coming up and having 2 great years. The teams sign them for a boat
load of money while the player's skills really lasted only a few years and they don't turn out
to be great ball players or what the teams thought that they were getting.
I wonder if they will ever put a clause in a contract that has a probation period for the first year after signing. So many guys have crazy contract years and then fall off. In all sports.
Teams just need to stop considering contract year performance as future performance
that would have be put into the CBA and the players' association would never agree to it
PA would never agree to it
Can’t believe Red Sox let go of a first ballot hall of famer ERIC HOSMER
Hahaha
Chaim Bloom...what is he even doing? Why did he trade for Hosmer in the first place? And once you've done that...what did you learn in the last few months that says now you don't want him? It's not like 1B is covered in Boston yet. Just...boggles my mind.
Every day I watch if I can
If Hosmer doesn’t get another Major League job, it’s safe to say he got blackballed. He was not the best clubhouse guy, attempted to ruin the Juan Soto deal by declining his part in the trade, and did not perform consistently throughout a season not once since signing to San Diego. Wouldn’t be surprised if they sent him to Boston with the unspoken condition of he never gets another shot in the league again since he was ungrateful and didn’t want to play in Washington. All I’m saying is, it’s a tough world when a Major League team doesn’t want to pay you the minimum let alone keep you on the roster for FREE.
I watched this yesterday and thoughts the cubs would pick ‘em up, and today boom!
Banger. Thanks
The Royals actually offered Hosmer 7/147 that he turned down to sign with San Diego.
This is a problem in all sports!!!! the team pay the players there value then once they start playing poor or injuries happen then there all bad contracts.
Facts! That's why teams shouldn't listen to fan bases.
Hosmer leaving San Diego was one of the best days of my life. Sucks Voit got dealt though.
Luke Voit revenge tour imminent
He was a big Part of those royals teams hopefully he get on a contender
He was on a contender
I’m glad Padres cut ties with Hosmer. You win some and lose some.
Hosmer batting nearly .400 for some months in 2022 how do you skip over that
Pujols screw up the angels too. They should have never given that type of money. Angels never recover from that messy contract
Sometimes I wish hosmer was still on the royals because they wouldn’t be a contending team but they wouldnt really end up in last place if they still had him
The worst contract ever is still Mike Hampton with the Atlanta Braves.
When he signed that deal, it was obvious then that sd would be trying to dump him halfway through that contract
Juan Soto is next to follow the same footsteps
Chris Davis getting paid until 2037 from the Orioles. That team already is cheap, that’s a huge handcuff to them. The Padres will spend regardless so Hosmer doesn’t even affect them.
No one will ever have it as good as bobby bonilla. Hosmer definitely tried.
I guess he will go to the Tigers haha. We seem to scoop all burnouts
Someone please link song in the beginning of video
ruclips.net/video/2BkS43tGJKI/видео.html
The thing is; Hosmer was never really that good. Not counting injured players, Heyward has to be in the conversation.
Was this contract a necessary evil for the Padres to show the were players for big contracts?
Hosmer could help the Royals now
If you think this is bad wait till you see how the contract they just gave Xander looks in about 5 years. This is what Preller does since 2016. He’s an awful gm if you ask me
Can you point us all to a good GM?
@@RicardoZ590 gms of the cardinals rays Braves guardians all don’t spend egregious amounts of money on awful contracts. Seems to lead to winning seasons for them.
The Braves got acuna and albies locked up relatively cheap I think mb even Riley as well
Cardinals and rays make smart trades and always have young pitching prospects (the cardinals do have more money tho obviously which is why they can have guys like Nolan and goldy)
Point is you can win without giving out massive deals. Preller did this same thing he’s doing rn in his first offseason in 16 when he signed Kimbrel, Upton and Kemp to massive deals. How did those work out ? Preller sucks only good move he’s made was tatis trade and even then he was just trying to dump James Shields which was another AWFUL contract HE gave out
@@gerardmcdonough3342 at the end of the day it’s only money right? None of it is OUR money. As Peter Seidler says you can’t take it with you. We seem to speak as if it’s OUR money. Btw, upton, kenp and Kimbrel and no comparison to machado, Soto, bogarts, tatis, Hader. Let’s see how all this plays out. IF a championship comes out of this at some point, nobody will give a crap about contracts or money etc. I mean look at the Mets and those contracts? How many ss do they need also with the Correa signing? If they win a world series I’m sure they’ll say it was worth it, if not, it’s the owners prerogative to spend as he pleases right? Does that mean it’s bad?
@@gerardmcdonough3342 u do know we beat the mets and dodgers in the playoffs last yr,? Almost made the world series,,we r on the right path,,
You didn't do your homework. Bobby Bonilla.
No 2014 royals lost to Madison not the giants
he sounds like a Chicago Cub already
I fucking told you so
Can’t disrespect hosmer like this damn 💔
I had to😞
Fully guaranteed contracts are terrible things
only thing i have going for me as a royals fan is that he tied game 5 of the world series for us, and then somebody else paid him what he deserved for it
That 2015 run was epic. Being down by 4 in the 8th inning, down 2 games to 1 of the DS. Then the CS and WS, just an absolute sick playoff run.
Feel like the Yankees should look in to how we as a cheap back up
Texas paid Elvis Andrews and A-Rod for years after they left.
That just the start of the list....
Sometimes they just as any worker put in the minimal at times. 🤷
F Eric Hosmer!!! As bad as he was on the field, he was worse I the locker room!!
To give him some credit the first 3 years of his Padres tenure he was the only bay they had. I went to a game and he was literally the only good talent on the field in 2019
Only good talent for the first 3 years? Did you forget the Padres signed him in 2018 and literally the following year in 2019 they signed Manny Machado and Tatis made his MLB debut
Another Chris Davis situation? Firstbase men have it good
Jeez Louise 6 million as a signing bonus
Crazy
You cant put a stat on team chemistry and he was the pillar for many years
Do the Bobby Bo contract
Your going to be making a bunch of these videos in the near future, with all the stupid contacts being giving out this year. Hosmer's contract will not nearly look as bad.
Glad he’s not a Padre anymore
How is this worse than the bobby bonilla deal?
Chris Davis Orioles contract is clearly worse
The Astros would never 😅
He’s gonna be better. With the shift going away.
I thought it was an over pay at the time and have only been proven right.
Mediocre fist baseman slap hitter no longer clutch 😂
This was done I was told as a F you to Boras and the Padres
He was leading the league in batting avg for a while last yr. Don't know if he's as trash as what u make him seem
Swanson on the cubs
the sox prob gonna trade him this offseason
They went ahead and released him
Nah Hosmer wasn't that bad. He was a double machine. Just overpriced for the talent that's all.
This franchise never learns its lesson.
We hated hoz because he sucked and didn't live up to it.
Scott Boras did his job with that Hosmer contract.
Not so thus far with the Michael Conforto contract.
It’s one of them, but Corbin has to be the worst
Jacoby Ellsbury anyone?
Rendon contract sad😢
Somehow my marlins will end up with him in 2023 , just how it goes.
And they'll only have to pay him the minimum,
Oakland will take him ! Lol
