      Based on their logo, it’s obvious that the Tigers like Old English. So, they should adopt it as the official language of the organization. This is the easiest way for that franchise to set themselves apart since they won’t be doing so on the field.

    Something you didn't mention that probably should be is that the Astros also put major investments in their international pool and scouting, getting pitchers Framber Valdez, Luis Garcia, Christian Javier, and Jose Urquidy, literally their whole starting rotation, from amateur free agent signings.
    The Tigers' only real international signing worth mentioning is Gregory Soto.

      The biggest problem with the Tigers isn’t the draft picks. They’re young pitchers are all very solid and Greene and Torkelson have all the promise in the world. It was Avilas trades. He traded away Verlander Martinez and Castellanos after the rebuild started and all we have to show for it is a couple AAAA players and an inconsistent third baseman. Not getting proper value for our trades is what ruined this. He traded Michael Fulmer this year, one of the best relievers on the market for a pitcher who wasn’t even ranked in the twins farm system

    As a Tigers fan, I remember the endless calls to fire Dave Dombrowski when the Tigers could not get over the hump and win the World Series. I thought it was foolish then, and in retrospect it seems even worse than that now. While Dombrowski never won the title he constructed some truly great teams with a bunch of All Stars and Hall of Famers who at least won 4 division titles, 2 conference titles and had a consistent winning record. The current 2022 Tigers aren't remotely close to those teams. And now with Chris Illitich as the owner, I doubt he will ever greenlit the spending necessary to field a contender. This is a guy who was complaining during CBA negotiations that the teams shouldn't have to pay for the players dinners post game. So yeah, we are not winning the Series anytime soon.

    • @walterdoge8374
      @walterdoge8374 Год назад +2

      Since Mike Illitch bought the team, the tigers looked good for a bit. Coming close to winning the World Series but falling short twice. Jim Leland left and then cam Brad Ausmus who I wouldn’t quite say made the team bad, but they definitely declined. Mike Illitch died leaving the team to his son Chris. Some of the tigers prospects got traded and after leaving Detroit, became all stars. I do think that Avila is a problem, but the ownership, and coaching is another thing.

    Great video as always. I'd like to get your rundown on why the Giants (who won World Series' in 2010, 2012, and 2014) never seem to be a likely destitation for any high profile free agents while the Dodgers and the Padres spend money on players like money grows on trees. Giants fans (such as myself) get to see rookies being called up from the minors and get to see them get their first major league hit but these rookies won't help them win the West. Yea, the Giants traded for Kris Bryant last year but he didn't re-sign instead choosing to go to the Rockies. Your input would be appreciated.

    • @87Khein
      @87Khein 2 года назад +1

      The Giants had a great run with the three titles but otherwise they’ve rarely been in postseason contention overall. I think that’s the issue there. The Dodgers choke regularly but players feel that anything can happen once you get to the postseason and the Dodgers are always there. Even with the three titles, the Giants only have five postseason appearances in the last 18 years.

    • @87Khein
      @87Khein 2 года назад

      As for the Padres, it's probably just the weather and the beaches that attract free agents.

      Every team can spend money, it's HOW you spend that money... Yeah the Dodgers might spend money but they wisely spend that money cause they have a well organized team. The Padres are basically copying the Dodgers and so are the Giants... and many other teams... Build your farm system with good scouts have good/great player development, be transparent with your players, and make the right moves when something is in need.

    • @clshep
      @clshep 2 года назад

      @@crazylegs1823 See, that’s where we’re going to disagree as I don’t believe the Giants are copying the Dodgers, not at all. The Padres? Yea, they are definitely copying the Dodgers. The Dodgers have the highest payroll in baseball, even more than the Yankees coming in at, $265M and the Padres have the 5th highest payroll at $220M. The Giants? $155M ranking them 13th out of 30 teams. The Giants haven’t done anything remotely close to signing a Juan Soto or Scherzer, or Verlander, or Ohtani. THAT is what I’m talking about. The lack of the Giants investing in players to make the team better and to win NOW rather than waiting for Joey Bart to come into his own or waiting for Marco Luciano to make his debut even though he’s currently in High A ball playing in Eugene. Did you know the Giants have not had a player hit over 30 homeruns in a single season since Barry Bonds did it in 2004??! 2004!! 18 years without a legitimate power threat in the lineup and they still managed to win 3 World Series Championships in 5 years. Which makes what they did so impressive.

    Last years Tigers looked to finally start clicking. things looked good going forward. Now, I think they were all playing over their heads and Illitch and Avila got their collective heads swollen by their perceived improvement. Cause look at them this year. Javier Baez came to the right place. His load of strikeouts fits right in with the rest of these strikeout artists. Yesterday vs Cleveland, Tigers struck out 14 times. Day before, also 14 times. A week ago vs the Twins, in the whole series, Tiger batters struck out close to 50 times. Two nights ago, Tigers down 3-2, bottom of the 8th inning. Bases loaded with a chance to tie it or even go ahead. Baez had struck out with a runner on, Tigers loaded them up with with one out, then their next two batters struck out to end the inning. Pathetic.

      Probably not- especially considering the reason he isnt in houston. I think the dumb free agent signings and trades were to get tradeable pieces from castoffs and reentice fans. Obviously that hasnt worked, even in a weak al central- most of the names they got were either inconsistent or oft-injured. It could've, it works in simulations, it worked for other teams a few times. I think the biggest problem is that the talent they need isnt easy to acquire with what they had before, and not a lot of their pitching success has come from within. Theyve also put on a ton of payroll that they were seemingly trying to shed with the rebuild- which isnt a problem for the Ilitches, i presume, but it could be a problem if it doesnt pan out.

    You said several times that the Tigers "did not have a plan", they did have one. They just did not execute it well which does not necessarily mean they were not smart. It could mean that when you try to implement a tear down/rebuild you need to hit on several players for each year in a three/four year span. You can't just hit on one or two a year for 7 years because by the time the players from the 7th year are making the majors they are just replacing the guys from the first year.
    The Astros had a group of players for a 4 year span making it so they had all good and young players at the same time. The Tigers seemed to miss on development or selection (I do not know) but the plan was solid.

MLB teams should not take for granted the passion of their fan base will not cool as their "genius" GMs coldly and logically tank, because you could be like the Tigers... the rebuild not work on the field and your demoralized fan base stays away permanently in droves. Cleveland is rated #2 by ESPN with their farm system and has had 1 losing season since 2013, and that was last year by exactly 2 games. Being a Cleveland fan, we always have pitchers coming up and doing well, and even our hitters that are coming up are doing better than in recent years, especially Steven Kwan. And Andres Gimenez, even if we didn't initially sign him, was the perfect cherry on top to make us forget losing Lindor. We are a team with a near past, present, and bright future. More than Detroit can say for sure. I don't see Detroit making the playoffs till 2026 at least myself.

    While all the star Astros players are great players, and their rotation has typically been one of the best in the league, they were definitely helped for a few years by their sign stealing scandal. And the issue with Detroit is that Dombrowski destroyed their farm system in order to acquire who he thought were playoff players. That is what he did everywhere he went. He did it here in Boston and our farm system is finally starting to make it's way back up the ranks. While the Astros have their scandals, they do seem to understand the balance of needing a solid farm system to feed their top team to keep them playing well for an extended period of time.

    I am an NHL fan mostly, but the same principle applies with a rebuild in that, tearing it down is so much easier than building it back up.
    A rebuild becomes perpetual without the proper scouting staff and player development system in place, and putting that together is much harder than it looks. Once a rebuild becomes perpetual, loses on the field and financial loses won't be the only issue. A losing culture will take hold and it is extremely hard to shake that.
    The Astros turnaround from the worst team in baseball in the early 2010's to a World Series win in 2017 (cheating aside) is pretty quick honestly.
