One of the best sports related days of my life. I was an RA at Central Michigan University and everyone in the dorm I worked in was watching that game. When Magglio hit that the whole place erupted. A whole building full of 18 and 19 year olds who had never EVER had a playoff baseball team to root for. Doors slammed. People screamed. People cried. I got to know a lot of those folks for real that night. Go Tigers. Magglio forever.
I have almost the opposite story lol. I was an RA at BGSU (which is in Northern Ohio), during the (then) Indians vs. Cubs World Series final game. People were pissed when the Indians lost!
On Friday the 13th, 2006, at age 12, I went to bed excited to wake up the next morning and spend all day on my PS2 and watch the Tigers win the Pennant. My Uncle Tim had tickets to the game against the As and was going to celebrate after the Win like he always does. He’s a big MSU, Cowboys, and Detroit Tigers fan so having one shared team in common that we all rooted for was nice (I’m an MSU fan but my dad-his brother-is a Notre Dame fan). Then, everything changed when my grandpa passed away on the night of Friday the 13th, which we didn’t know about until the following morning around 6 am. We drove to Jackson in tears and my Uncle sold his tickets to the game so we could all tend to and mourn for my Grandpa. Most of us were in tears all the way through the bottom of the 9th, when Monroe hit that single and Polanco followed with another. And when Mags hit that 3 run homer, I cracked a very small smile for the very first time that day, only to go back into tears shortly after. Needless to say, the day the Tigers celebrated their ALCS victory was very bitter sweet for me.
As an 8 year old kid from Michigan who loved baseball in 2006, this moment will always be one of my favorites as a Tigers fan, and Mags will always be one of my favorite players for this home run.
One of my first major sports memories. I had just turned 6 that august. And little did I know that the 06 season would spark a ten year run of fantastic tigers baseball. This moment helped to spark my love of baseball. Will always love mags for his walk-off and his legendary 07 season.
The last time my Oakland athletics made it to the alcs. Always dreamed of seeing them win a World Series at home (a game I would 100% go to). However, that will never happen again….. Vegas won’t be the same for any fan in california.
I’ll always remember this game. My whole family was watching it at my grandparents house. I thought I was bad luck, so I stepped out of the room to get ice when Magglio hit this shot. We all started going absolutely insane. One of the greatest sports memories in my lifetime
Great video. I would love to see a Rewinder on Evgeny Kuznetsov's overtime winner against the Pittsburg Penguins in 2018. There's a lot to go over. The Penguins coming off back to back Stanley Cups, and the way the Caps could not escape the second round for so many years, the long wait Caps fans had for Kuznetsov to come over from Russia, Kris Letang's turnover, the amount of depth the Caps had lost in the offseason coming off a President's Trophy, and much more.
As an Australian Tigers fan that only came to know Baseball in 2013, this is a wonderful video. Thank you for delving into the era prior to my love for the game!
Those A's of the early 2000s deserved so much better in the postseason, especially in 2002 and 2003. The 2006 team overperformed, with an amazing Frank Thomas season, the rotation was stacked with Zito on his last year, alongside Harden/Haren/Loaiza... and then everything imploded because of the Billy Beane/Ken Macha spat during this series. Hopefully, the A's and Tigers can get back on the winning ways and deliver us more playoff series, like they did back in 2012 and 2013.
@@stevencook4002 Shut up. That's my opinion. I bet you think the 2015 Royals are the best baseball team ever. Newsflash, they weren't. They were one hit wonders that took advantage of the poor AL during the 2015 season. They wouldn't have gone to the 2014 WS if the A's don't trade Céspedes. And yes. The 2002 and 2003 teams deserved better than the ALDS exits. Especially in 2003, they didn't sweep the Sox in Boston because of the awful umpiring.

As an A’s fan, I also turned off the TV once the ball cleared the wall. Could y’all do some positive A’s Rewinders? You’ve done the Jeter flip, the Gibson walkoff, and now this. How about the 2012 team winning the division on the last day of the season? The 2013 Vogt walkoff in the ALDS? Dallas Braden’s perfect game? We could really use it this year…
Yes yes yes. Game 162 of the 2012 season, please!! That season was pure magic. Growing up in metro Detroit, I was a huge into baseball and the Tigers because of my Dad. We called them the Cardiac Cats because they'd comeback at the last minute throughout the 06 season. Dad's health started to go down hill by fall and he passed from cancer literally 10 days before this moment. I like to think he had gotten a front row seat watching this from the top of the scoreboard kind of like Al from Angels in the Outfield. This was the team that reminded me what hope was when i needed it most. Bless you, boys. ❤️🤝
This moment will always make me choke up. I was 10 years old downstairs with my late father watching the game. When the ball left Magg's bat we knew we would get to watch our beloved Tigers play in the world series. Considering 3 years prior we had 100+ loses and just stunk as a team. We never believed we would get to see them play in the post season let alone the world series together before the cancer took him a couple of years later. Thank you Magg's for giving me that moment with my dad, you will always be my favorite Tiger.
I loved Magglio's game and this run and his comeback in general was one of those things in life that shows a person who needs a sign that life can be special and magnificent and beautiful all crammed together... and that all was translated and presented to the world through the church of baseball. It's a game that, in many facets, can be a microcosm or lessons for life's many struggles that with dedication and perseverance can be conquered or straight up transcended. These are the things that build a person stronger when they see them through to the other side of it. What a Tigers team that was.
A Clara episode and it's about my Tigers! I'm a Millennial/Gen Z lifelong fan that suffered through the Randy Smith era and 2003. Seeing Maggs hit that homer was like a movie or a dream come true. Too bad they could never get over that damn final hurdle.
It should be noted that in 2006, 2011, 2012 & 2013 Every time the Tigers made the playoffs, they always just so happened to beat the same two teams in the Athletics and Yankees
I remember watching this series as a little kid and thinking the Tigers would wipe the floor with whoever won the NLCS. Too bad that untimely errors and Guitar Hero messed things up for the Tigers. They could’ve won about 3 titles between 2006 and 2014
Thanks for this. As a Detroit sports fan who's had to endure relentless losing with no relief seemingly forever now, it has conviced me that I am a loser too and don't deserve happiness. I needed this reminder.
I've never clicked a video so fast in my life. This was one of my greatest memories. I was supposed to be at homecoming, but I told my date I wasn't leaving until the game was over
I’m a St Louis Cardinals fan… and I was in Kindergarten when 06 happened. This video really opened up my eyes to the sports magic on the other side. Thanks for making these!
I distinctly remember this moment: sitting at the Westway Diner, across from my sister and dad, just days after the Mets lost a heartbreaking Game 6 that might've sent them to the World Series too. There was a TV in the diner airing the game. We were just given our salads, and my dad, who was listening to the radio at the time, suddenly uttered "Home Run." Moments later, Maggs hits the walk-off. It's little moments like this that makes me truly appreciate sports. Doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing: you'll always remember where you were when certain moments in sports history occurred. And this one will always stick with me for that very reason.
I'll never, ever forget this moment. Was in my freshman year of high school, at dinner at a country club in West Michigan with my then girlfriend. It was the night of my homecoming dance, so I hadn't been paying attention the game until about 30 seconds before this happened. Some guy called out 'It's all on this!' and everyone stopped to watch. The moment Maggy crushed it, the place ERUPTED. Old and young alike were yelling and hugging, it was a wild experience. I was too young to understand the significance, but gaaaahdamn was it an awesome moment
I wish you could've included just a little more footage at the end. It's always a joy on Rewinder to not just see the action, but the reaction of different players and coaches to the event as the celebrations or crushing defeats settle in.
considering this is where Detroit sports peaked (minus the Lions of course) leading into the Red Wings winning the cup 2 years later then losing the cup, it was nice to relive some nostalgia from long ago, Pistons won it in 04, Tigers went to the Series and lost in 06 and the Wings won it in 08 and it all fell apart right after the Tigers lost the Series again in 12, please we need help our only hope is the Lions....
While 'best' is subjective, one thing is non-negotiable: Clara's a sure fire short-lister--day in, day out. Her pieces bring me (and many, many others) a *truckload* of joy. So... Thank you, Clara!
I was living in England at the time, and because of the time difference I wasn't able to watch much baseball. I had time for this game though, and as an outfielder myself in high school I had a soft spot for guys like Magglio Ordonez; on top of that, the Tigers were absolutely electric that season and so much fun to watch even if you weren't a fan. I was able to catch the last few innings of this game, and I remember watching this at-bat thinking to myself, "He's going to do it. Ordonez is going to take the Tigers to the World Series NOW!" And then he did. One of my favorite outfielders that I remember seeing play had an immaculate hero moment that he absolutely deserved to have. He didn't even play for my favorite team, but as a baseball fan I loved seeing him do as well as he had.
I was in the barbershop watching this. My dad was at home watching. I sat in the chair and said..."Come on Mags. Crush this fu*king thing.". I'll be damned if he didn't. I jumped up and went home to celebrate with him.. without a haircut. 😅 My dad passed two years later. Still one of my favorite memories with him.
Oh dude…….I’ll never forget that day. I was 12, I remember playing whiffle ball with friends before the game. Went to my friends house to watch his family had a ton of people over for it. When he walked off everyone was going nuts. I’ll never forget that moment. Nothing better than a walk off to go to the World Series.
As a lifelong tigers fan I miss these days for us I used to have a book my great grandma made me it had every tigers player picture from the newspaper when they went to the World Series, I’d give anything to go back to these days! Miss you GG❤ and I’ll always root for our Tigers
As a Twins fan I remember this year very clearly. I was at game 162 and 163. Beating the Tigers felt like winning it all but I was also glad they did what was unthinkable to my mind at the time. So perhaps there is hope for my Vikings someday...
Sure indeed was a happy moment! I’ll never forget that home run. Just a fckn shame they couldn’t get it done in the World Series. What a Cinderella season. I love fox’s broadcast when it happened but tigers radio Dan Dickerson had the fckn call of all time. “A swing and a A fly ball to left field, that’s deep!!!!! ITS WAYYYY BACK!! THE TIGERS ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!!!” With so much fckn emotion in his voice
I remember eating in a little Mexican restaurant during the game. Everyone was crowded around the little TV there and when Magglio hit that, the place just exploded. Definitely a memory I’ll never forget

As an Oakland A’s fan, this game was gut wrenching. I remember staying silent as I watched this live game live. However the Tigers dominated the the ALCS as went into this game 3-0. So the A’s had no chance on coming back. This game was just a nail in the coffin for the 2006 A’s season.
The Athletics and Tigers used to be strong teams, but it's a shame that these two teams haven't been able to win a championship since the 1990s. In particular, the 2006 World Series, in which the Tigers lost to the Cardinals, is still impressive.
Oh man Secret Base😕 Being a As fan that moment just kills me. That was such a great team we had that year and the franchise has never been the same from that moment!!! We've had so many bad seasons and Wildcard game heartbreaks and not to mention how many players we lost who have gone on to win World Series is absolutely insane 🤯🤯🤯
Before I even watch, I remember being in a small but boisterous bar, saying "If Mags sends this over the fence, I'm calling my mom and screaming at the top of my lungs that the Tigers are going to the World Series"...then...
The 2nd frame of the ball leaving his bat, I scream "THERE IT GOES...THERE IT GOES!!!!"" *grabs phone...climbs seat...mom picks up* "You there?...LADIES AND GENTLEMEN...THE DETROIT TIGERS...ARE GOING...TO THE WORLD SERIES!!!" Pandemonium ensues, and I get back on the phone with my mom and explain what I just did...cuz I said I would.
Life long Tigers fan, I remember that Jim Leyland "pep talk" they are referring to. They dropped a game on a Sunday and to paraphrase what Leyland said to the media, they "had their heads up their assess" and were "more concerned about getting on the plane to Oakland that they were the ****ing game." Tigers I think went on to sweep the next series of I remember, and then hung 16 runs in 1 game on the Royals in the next weekend, if I recall.
I was a little kid when this happened, so I haven't thought about it in a while, but I remember that year my family's TV was somehow messed up in a way that made it so we had static on the main screen, but we could watch just fine in the picture in picture, so I watched that whole playoffs sitting right next to the screen. It's too bad the Tigers couldn't get it done in the World Series.
I was living in the dorms at Michigan State at this time. When Magglio hit this homer, everyone up and down the hallway was screaming and freaking out.
3:43 - All the way in the top left we have a blurb that is extolling the virtues of Wily Mo Peña who I love with my whole heart but whose 11 dingers were juuuuuust a bit shy of 40.
As a Red Sox fan, wanted the Tigers to win that year as they were 3 years removed from nearly losing 120 games. Luckily Verlander fell into them as Padres made one of the biggest blunders in draft day history in the draft in 2004.
@jakebuchsbaum3348 drafted Matt Bush who was drafted as a shortstop before converted to pitcher. At the time the Padres ownership wasn't free spending as today in spite of their 1st year at Petco in 2004.
Loved that 06’ team as a kid in the east bay, wish they went further but Detroit was just mounting up significantly Still have a signed Houston Street jersey too
I remember watching this at my birthday party at the bowling alley and celebrating with my friends when magglio hit the HR. we even named our cat maggie after him!
I hugged complete strangers at an Uno pizzeria in Grand Rapids when that ball went out. 2006 was as good as a year can be without a world series ring. After years of sucky baseball, that was special.
This moment is always bittersweet for me, because on one hand it was the highlight of a decade of great Tigers teams, but on the other hand...THIS was the highlight for a decade of great Tigers teams. 2006 ALCS shouldn't have been the peak, yet it was
They should've won it all that year and 2012. Chocked it up so hard in those world series. Makes me sad they couldn't get 1 of those. N now it's baseball purgatory. Although the future may finally be looking bright, kinda, maybe
My favorite thing about this is the announcer on the call is Thom Brennaman… “and there’s a deep drive to left field by Ordoñez, it will be a home run”
does this make up for the fact that we did tigers, pistons and wings collapses first?
well we lost that world series, so no
You could do a Lions collapse. Sure, you'd need to go back to the 50s to find a championship level team first ...
No, but another rewinder on Armando Galaraga's blown perfect game would certainly help.
On the other hand, there's still time for that Detroit Shock Collapse.
No

This tigers team was supposed to be next up after the Yankees era was over. But seriously this team should have won at least one championship
One of my greatest childhood memories. Thanks for doing this it's nice to finally see something positive about Detroit sports
Thanks for this. As a Detroit sports fan who's had to endure relentless losing with no relief seemingly forever now, it has conviced me that I am a loser too and don't deserve happiness. I needed this reminder.
Definitely wasn’t expecting this one! One of my favorite players ever
I love the way you present this video.
Payback for 68
I distinctly remember this moment: sitting at the Westway Diner, across from my sister and dad, just days after the Mets lost a heartbreaking Game 6 that might've sent them to the World Series too.
One of my biggest Mandela Effects - the Detroit Tigers went to the 2006 World Series and Miguel Cabrera wasn't a part of the team.
I remember this moment. It was glorious
Why do you gotta put us A's in more pain
Needed this so bad. Thank you.
considering this is where Detroit sports peaked (minus the Lions of course) leading into the Red Wings winning the cup 2 years later then losing the cup, it was nice to relive some nostalgia from long ago, Pistons won it in 04, Tigers went to the Series and lost in 06 and the Wings won it in 08 and it all fell apart right after the Tigers lost the Series again in 12, please we need help our only hope is the Lions....
I miss Seth and Will’s commentaries.
Yep this chicks the worst they’ve ever had narrate videos.
Clara has the best narration voice this side of Jon Bois
Ordonez is going to take the Tigers to the World Series NOW!"
And then he did. One of my favorite outfielders that I remember seeing play had an immaculate hero moment that he absolutely deserved to have. He didn't even play for my favorite team, but as a baseball fan I loved seeing him do as well as he had.
Thank you so much for this.
Omg thank you! #1 sports memories of my life. I was 11 lol
I was in the barbershop watching this. My dad was at home watching. I sat in the chair and said..."Come on Mags. Crush this fu*king thing.". I'll be damned if he didn't. I jumped up and went home to celebrate with him.. without a haircut. 😅
My dad passed two years later.
Should do a moment in history for the Steve Yzerman blue line goal in double OT
As a lifelong tigers fan I miss these days for us I used to have a book my great grandma made me it had every tigers player picture from the newspaper when they went to the World Series, I’d give anything to go back to these days! Miss you GG❤ and I’ll always root for our Tigers
As a Twins fan I remember this year very clearly. I was at game 162 and 163. Beating the Tigers felt like winning it all but I was also glad they did what was unthinkable to my mind at the time. So perhaps there is hope for my Vikings someday...
you guys make the best videos
Sure indeed was a happy moment! I’ll never forget that home run. Just a fckn shame they couldn’t get it done in the World Series. What a Cinderella season. I love fox’s broadcast when it happened but tigers radio Dan Dickerson had the fckn call of all time. “A swing and a A fly ball to left field, that’s deep!!!!! ITS WAYYYY BACK!! THE TIGERS ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES!!!” With so much fckn emotion in his voice
FINALLY A GOOD DETROIT SBNATION VIDEO!!

Still remember where I was, who I was with, and what I was doing. There’s a framed picture on my wall of the moment. It made me a tigers fan for life.
I have been to plenty of Tigers games in the fall. This game was by far the coldest one I ever attended.
This was on the day I was born lol
It’s good to see one of my teams on the winning side of these rewinds.
He had previously homered in the 6th to tie it as well.
Was at that game, one of the best experiences of my life.
I was living in the dorms at Michigan State at this time. When Magglio hit this homer, everyone up and down the hallway was screaming and freaking out.
I still can't believe that I was there in person at that game. Has to be the greatest sports moment of my life.
What did the Padres do? (I didn’t follow baseball then)
@jakebuchsbaum3348 drafted Matt Bush who was drafted as a shortstop before converted to pitcher. At the time the Padres ownership wasn't free spending as today in spite of their 1st year at Petco in 2004.
Few things have brought as much joy as the 2006 Tigers in terms of sports fandom! Texas over USC is close and that was the same year!
I just watched the homer vid just a couple days ago. What a feeling
Watching Placido Polanco leaping in the air around 3rd with that stupid headwarmer on is one of my favorite sports memories of all time
Loved that 06’ team as a kid in the east bay, wish they went further but Detroit was just mounting up significantly
Still have a signed Houston Street jersey too
I remember watching this at my birthday party at the bowling alley and celebrating with my friends when magglio hit the HR. we even named our cat maggie after him!
This was REALLY well done. There's stuff on cable tv that's not this good.
Sean Casey pouring champagne on a laughing Detroit cops head. What a night...
...and what an awful World Series lol.
My favorite thing about this is the announcer on the call is Thom Brennaman… “and there’s a deep drive to left field by Ordoñez, it will be a home run”
