Walking in the door, the look on my face stopped him. “They lost.” My Dad passed a few years ago. The last game we ever watched together was the Tribe losing to Cubs is the WS. RIP Dad.

Little did I know of what was to come with the Yankees in the coming years. A couple of years after he passed away (which gutted me), the Yankees happened to be in Toronto on what would have been his 75th birthday. The Indians in the 90's had a squad. Still don't see how they never won a ring. I thought them beating the Yankees and facing the Marlins in the WS was gonna be an easy ring for them.
And it wasn't yet known in 1997, but they actually "Broke into" the Yanks' Dynasty that year. Crazy how they didn't go back to the World Series until 2016.

The story of Omar Vizquel telling the Indians manager Mark Hargrove not to put in Jose Mesa is well known and caused beef between the two for years. The fact Vizqeul is regarded as one of the most beloved Indians ever makes it even more spicy to fans.
Joe Table looked shaky much of the season. Grover always gave pitchers too much rope to hang themselves with. Marlins had been sailing balls deep into the outfield for multiple innings off Jared Wright before Bonilla soloed. Hargrove left him out there all that time when Chuck Nagy was available. THAT was what lost the world series, that Bonilla solo shot.
Vizquel wrote in his book (Omar!) that Mesa's eyes were "vacant. Completely empty. Nobody home" on that night. Mesa swore that from then on, every time the two of them faced each other, he'd hit Vizquel in the head. And he did hit him several times. I'll never understand why Mesa wasn't suspended for long periods of time every time he did it. It was premeditated with intent to injure.

Just got goosebumps seeing this. Remember watching this game with my father and family in Miami, where I grew up. Back when baseball was exciting and captivating to watch, no matter how long a game took. The franchise may have been mismanaged to hell, but I will always have respect for what this team the 03 team did in winning WS titles. The Marlins, to quote the Miami Herald, “are a worthy prince..” for at least giving the city some titles before the Heat took over the scene.
This was the beginning of significant WS moments involving Edgar Renteria. The second one was when he lined out to Keith Foulke to give the Red Sox their first World Series title in 86 years. The third was when he hit a 3 run homer in the 7th inning of game 5 in 2010 to ultimately clinch the Giants their first world series title in 56 years.

This was the first sports memory I ever had as a child. Jim Thome quickly became my childhood hero. I was lucky enough to grow into my 20s watching Thome play.
This was the first bet I made as a kid and won against my Grade 6 classmates. Everyone thought Cleveland was a lock, but I knew the quality players on the Marlins team were former Expos from the 94 season.
I was a baseball obsessed 8 year old from south florida, when I saw watched this. I’ll never forget it. For YEARS I had home plate from Joe Robbie/Pro Player Stadium, signed by all the players from the 97’ team, framed in my childhood room.
I think after this World Series he only saw two playoff series wins the remainder of his career. 1998 ALDS and 2009 NLDS I remember him on the Orioles in 2012 when they made that Cinderella run to the postseason. Brought some great veteran leadership to that ball club!
I had gotten into baseball in 1995 and latched on to the 1995 Indians bandwagon. Their loss to the Braves that year was disappointing, but I remained a die-hard fan of theirs in 1997. I was there… Section 440, Row 23, Seat 3. A $30 ticket, but how many people can say that they saw their team win the World Series in extra innings of Game 7? Yes, the Marlins became a laughing stock, but not that night… that night, they were the best baseball team in the world! And yes, I have my ticket framed, along with the front page of the Miami Herald from the following day, which I was still awake to see delivered.
I was born on Oct 24 1997. My whole moms side of my family is from Cleveland. I've felt cursed since this series. I went to Indians game 7 WS and was there to see the Cubs beat the tribe :(
I cannot believe you haven't done a piece on the 1991 World Series, or at the very least Game 7. Yes, I'm biased (Twins fan) but that series, aside from half of it taking place in a misshapen barn, AKA the Metrodome, provided great drama not to mention great baseball. I mean when again are we ever going to witness a pitcher throw a complete game shut-out in Game 7 go back out there for the 10th.
NBC was not too thrilled about this series. Don Ohlmeyer publicly wished the World Series to end in a four-game sweep so that it wouldn't derail NBC's fall entertainment schedule. Ah… Must See TV… you had to be there… Because the series went the distance, this also impacted the NFL schedule. CHI at MIA had to be moved to Monday. So most of the US saw GB at NE Super Bowl rematch while those in Miami and Chicago saw the Bears notch a surprise win over the Dolphins in overtime
Huh, never realized that about the Tony Fernandez misplay in the 11th. It's kinda like the Alex Gonzalez error moments prior to the "Bartman Ball" -- or when Jose Lind misplays the ball in the 1992 NLCS moments before Sid Bream's slide. Nobody ever remembers the error that precedes the walk-off.
The world still cannot figure out how the 1997 Marlins won the World Series. Everything went their way. That's why once you are in, anything can happen.
Edgar Renteria was the last batter of the World Series twice in his career. Both times he hit the ball straight back to the pitcher. Keith Foulke made the play, Charles Nagy didn't.

I remember sports center after the Red Sox had swept the Cardinals in the 2004 World series they were showing highlights and the commentator / journalist/reporter whatever you call them on SportsCenter said that Edgar renteria went from hitting the last RBI in the 1997 World series to being the last out in the 2004 World series. It's so minor but it's just something I remember a lot maybe because that's when I was first getting into watching sports
These videos are amazing.
Thank you for giving us marlins fans this after the six year anniversary of Jose
This was fantastic. Please do Russel Martins HR off of Johnny Cueto in the 2013 NL Wildcard and the Pirates journey to that moment.
“CUE-TO! CUE-TO! CUE-TO!”
Mm, the greatest moment in this franchise’s history
Thanks, Marlins fans could really use this right now
As a Cleveland fan, I still wasn’t over this one when 2016 ended in game seven and extras.
I remember in Three Nights in August that LaRusa said Renteria intentionally leaned back from the curve ball so he could see it again.
My first major sports heartbreak (one of many being an Indian/ Guardian fan). Still hard to watch to this day!
I was born on Oct 24 1997. My whole moms side of my family is from Cleveland. I've felt cursed since this series. I went to Indians game 7 WS and was there to see the Cubs beat the tribe :(
That’s a rough road to walk buddy
This series has two teams of legends. Hernandez, Lofton, Grissom, Tome, Renteria, Alou, Rameriz, Counsel, Vizquel, Nenn, Bonilla, Sheffield, and more
In the vein of the Space Jam Rewinder, a deep dive into Jake Taylor’s game winning bunt to win Game 163 in the ‘89 AL East would be cool.
Thanks for this 🙏🏽
Thanks for the content ❤
What a time to be alive! Can't wait for October Ball.
Sheer pain and agony still to this day. I was 11 the year Cleveland lost this series and it still hurts.
I want to throw everything out the window watching this still 20+ years later
We don't need to relive this moment. We can forget it ever existed.
That’s man. I actually cried during this game 😑🫣🥲
Ah… Must See TV… you had to be there…
Because the series went the distance, this also impacted the NFL schedule.
Nobody ever remembers the error that precedes the walk-off.
been waiting for this vid
Hey, Cleveland fan here. Can we please limit videos about us blowing championships to one a week. Thx.
Renteria in 1997: *Series-winning hit for Marlins!*
Renteria in 2004: *Final out of World Series, Red Sox win first World Series Title since 1918.*
The world still cannot figure out how the 1997 Marlins won the World Series. Everything went their way. That's why once you are in, anything can happen.
The Marlins old colors are underrated
black and teal suited them well
what they got now is similar, but just not as good.
plus they never use their best jeresy outside of spring
Please make a rewinder of Marlin Jackson's interception in the 2006 AFC Championship!!
He’s from my small hometown. He’s as down to earth and generous as they come. Greet guy.
Hard to imagine today, but that Marlins' payroll of $89 million was eye-popping and very controversial.
*sees title*
Me (an Indians fan): *repeatedly bangs head against the wall*
In my mind, images of war, and death, and horror, and this game.
That’s the best subscribe statement I’ve heard on RUclips. Don’t have to type as much stuff. I’ll subscribe just for that
I was so happy for Darren Daulton and Jim Eisenreich! They both deserved that World Series!
This is my first baseball memory. I remember being super annoyed that the game pre-empted my favorite afternoon cartoons.
Edgar Renteria was the last batter of the World Series twice in his career. Both times he hit the ball straight back to the pitcher. Keith Foulke made the play, Charles Nagy didn't.
FINALLY a baseball video
Ready for 5 years from now when there's a rewinder about Jorge Soler's homer in Game 6 in Houston.
