Giambi's non-slide is still one of the least talked about dumb plays in sports history. You're taught at a young age to slide whenever the play is close but he chose not to. It gets overshadowed by the amazing play that Jeter made, but Giambi definitely would have been safe had he slid.
Yeah Jeremy Giambi was a very overrated player during his MLB days. Can’t believe Giambi doesn’t slide there. Spectacular play by Jeter but everyone knows you should slide in that situation. This Yankees run was also weird as they would trail several of their series severely and be outplayed for most of the time. But then they’d won a few games by narrow margin and win the final game. Amazing that they came a blown save away from winning a fourth straight title.
I wanna know how a consistently below average defensive shortstop was that far out of position on that play. What is he doing to the 1B side of the mound?

I don't see how anyone can be sure Giambi would have been safe if he'd slid. In fact, I think he would have been even more out. Sliding actually slows you down; the reason people do it is to avoid tags coming from above or not run through bases. But in this case, it was the very fact that Giambi was running that made Posada almost miss his leg. If Giambi had slid, I think the tag would have caught him on the bottom of his foot or the side of his leg before his foot touched the plate.
