The only piece that is missing from this is more of the backstory about Dan Johnson, and why this game cemented his legacy in Tampa Bay Rays lore. Sure, to most Rays fans this is the moment that comes to mind when we mention Johnson, but there is a reason Dewayne Staats says he “does it again.” In the magical 2008 season where the Rays pulled off one of the most improbable but memorable Cinderella stories in MLB history, without a doubt the team’s biggest rival was the Red Sox. As evident by the back and forth all season and in the ALCS. But on September 9th, the Red Sox were just a half game behind the Rays with a chance to pass them in the standings. Going into the top of the 9th, the game seemed locked up as the Red Sox led 4-3 and had their All-Star closer Papelbon take the mound. Johnson, who had just been called up from AAA and showed up late to the ballpark, was called to face Papelbon in just his second major league at bat of the season with little expectations outside of just getting on base. But he did have power, and he showed it when he sent a 3-2 fastball out over the right field bullpens at Fenway Park. Tie game; and the Rays would go on to win that game 5-4. That moment was the “Dan Johnson game” prior to game 162. Dan had seemingly a flair for the dramatic when he played the Red Sox, also hitting a walkoff homerun in the 10th inning in a game on August 28th 2010 which helped the Rays keep pace with their co-division leading rival Yankees. While some fans thought at the beginning of the 2011 season Dan could take over 1st base or DH duties with the departure of All-Star Carlos Pena. But as things unfolded, he was unable to produce as an everyday player for the Rays and local products Casey Kotchman and Johnny Damon took over and played nearly everyday. But Johnson once again showed the Rays why he was worth stashing, and indirectly had one more opportunity to haunt Red Sox fans. Color commentator Brian Anderson pointed out that Dan was there to do one thing, and one thing only, “hit the ball out of the ballpark.” Just as a side note, I love this video, and I love coming back to it as it is one of if not the most legendary moments in Tampa Bay Rays history (as well as MLB history). I look forward to a rewind of the “Brett Phillips game” if that ever happens. But even if it doesn't, I'm very thankful Secret Base took on game 162 and gave it a rewind. Thank you!

I believe that win did something important for the clubhouse. It changed the culture. They saw that an impact could be made. And they wanted more. Cue playoff window opening.
I will never forget watching my Rays go from 7 runs down in the 7th inning to knock off the Yankees. It was unbelievable. And thanks so much for the great shoutout for Longo. He is still missed in St. Pete.

I'm admittedly not much of a baseball fan, so this video is the first time I've heard of any of this. Watching the actual moment and seeing the camera pan and zoom over to "Crawford's Corner" was a "Holy hell" moment in my mind. Then again, with the way Seth drew our attention to that left field fence earlier, maybe I should've seen it coming. Stories like this are the heart and soul of sports. Any sport, baseball or otherwise.
I've lived in Tampa my whole life and followed our teams casually, but 2011 was my first year as a full-fledged watch-every-game baseball and Rays fan. I will never ever forget this season and especially this night, part of me thought baseball would always feel this good haha. There's been plenty of pain and suffering since then but nine years later this team finally gave me TWO historic Rays moments yet again with our ALDS win and that crazy Game 4 walk-off just a few nights ago. This video will give me the energy to get through the next hopefully two(!) WS games ✨ we need some of this Game 162 magic
Longoria crossing 1B with his hands in the air was immortalized in a giveaway figure the following year. That corner is dubbed Game 162 and the whole sequence of events is shown in the concourse. Great spot. Great moment.
I was at that game with my dad and I still get chills re-watching the highlights. Tampa Bay doesn't get nearly as much respect as they deserve for being in a tough division with Boston and New York. Go Rays!
My buddy is a Yankees fan and I remember him celebrating when Longoria hit that home run. He was that excited to see the Red Sox blow their playoff spot so spectacularly.
Just to note this, as an Orioles fan, that walk off by Andino did mean something. That moment is considered to be the culture changing moment of the Buckle Up Birds era teams, and was a catalyst for the best baseball Baltimore had seen in roughly 15 years. It might not seem like much to outsiders, but to those in Baltimore, it meant a lot.
I remember this day oh so well. Watched all four games and each one was awesome for a different reason. Easily the most exciting day for Baseball games in my life. I remember Greg Amsinger dubbing it "Wildcard Wednesday".
As a braves fan that year was hard. I believe it's what triggered the breakdown which hurt so much. But so many years later i am on cloud nine and thankful for that collapse
The month long build up, the way almost all of these 162’s ended, and the Cardinals miraculous Game 6 WS. This entire sequence is one in a million type stuff. Great job on the rewind.
Great video. I love the rays and I remember going to bed early because I had football practice that night and was starting to get a cold but also because I thought it would be good luck. Before I passed out after a shot of NyQuil my dad told me Longoria just hit a 3 run shot. I said great but wasn’t about to leave my bed. The next morning my mom banged on the bathroom door with the news paper telling me about Longoria’s home run. I have never regretted missing this because I still want to believe me going to bed early helped them win.
Here's a suggestion for a rewind video, but it's about cricket. Even still, it would be perfect for a rewind video. So here goes: In cricket, the way scoring works is one team bats and puts up a score, while the second team tries to chase it down afterwards. If both teams score the same amount, then they play a super over, which is like overtime. Each team plays 6 deliveries and whoever scores more wins. Now a tie in cricket is very unusual and there are usually maybe 5 super overs played in a year. Then the rule for if a super over is tied used to be that the team that scored more boundaries (big hits) would win. What this did was give a team going into a super over an inherent advantage. It had happened one time between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, a domestic league, but was never changed as people thought it would never happen in a big game. In 2019, the world cup final was between England and New Zealand. England had never won a world cup before, despite being the creator of the sport. New Zealand were in their second consecutive world cup final after being the runner-ups in 2015 to rivals Australia. New Zealand batted first, and England did not look like they were in a good position. Then their player Ben Stokes played really well to tie the game, sending it to a super over. England batted first in the super over, and New Zealand had to chase. Needing 2 to win off the last ball of the super over, the New Zealand batsman scored 1 off the last ball and got out, just short of the second run. The super over was tied, but England won as they had scored more boundaries. This allowed England to win their first world cup, and meaning New Zealand lost their second consecutive world cup. Many people were unhappy about the result and the tied super over rule was changed very quickly to just continue super overs until someone won. This came into play this year during the IPL, as a super over between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab was tied, and went to a second super over.
what a sick video! even as a Yankees fan i always had a soft spot for Longoria lots of Respect for him also loved the Narration skills i was so focused on the video and on the details, you gave those 12:43 seem to fly by new Sub 💙
What a lot of folks forget from the Rays game is the play Evan made at third base that saved a run in extra innings. I watch the highlights of this game at least twice a year. IMO, this might have been the greatest night in baseball history.
2011, what a wild ride. I remember Francona left Boston shortly after this meltdown, penned an article saying the Sox's championship window was now firmly shut, and then with this crazy recapped night, along with others, like the Colorado/Arizona game in 2007, prompted Bud Selig to give us the Wild Card Game we know now. Baseball is a beautiful and magnificent beast.
Seth is the man! Working overtime to give us two videos within 72 hrs! Do a beef history next to make my week complete! ... also end this month on a high note!
same, i was close to turning it off as i had school the next day. Everything was perfect, especially the calls Brian anderson and dwayne stats made before the 3 run homer by longoria: "maybe, just maybe..." and "these are the kind of situations Evan was made for" and right after that statement Evan belted that homer.

One of the best Secret Base videos yet. Great job SETH!
Best sports series and channel ever.
Think this still stands as the wildest single night in MLB living history for most people.
Who else remembers the MLB 12 The Show Intro. It basically just showed highlights from these games. It was really cool.
I didn't think this video would depress me but then you reminded me until you reminded me about the 2011 Braves...
Love it. Keep putting Seth to work these are so great
Evan Longoria used to be my grandma's neighbor
Nobody needed to know that I just wanted to share it
That’s actually pretty crazy
ha, my ex girlfriend used to live in that neighborhood. shore acres or whatever
One of my favorite days of sports ever!
Y’all coming with these videos...I LIKE IT
Here's a suggestion for a rewind video, but it's about cricket. Even still, it would be perfect for a rewind video. So here goes:
In cricket, the way scoring works is one team bats and puts up a score, while the second team tries to chase it down afterwards.
I literally just looked on yt for game 162 and this popped up lmaooo
ig I'm early
What a lot of folks forget from the Rays game is the play Evan made at third base that saved a run in extra innings.
I watch the highlights of this game at least twice a year. IMO, this might have been the greatest night in baseball history.
I've never missed a Rays game since. I remember where I was, who I was with, and what we were doing when this night ended. RaysUp!
Please do the Minneapolis miracle
wait maybe half or 1 year
@@barr0nha754 We got the JR Smith blunder just a little over a year after it happened
Song at the end?, before the details are finished????
evan longoria has always been my favorite player, as someone whos love of baseball has been lost, thank you
2011, what a wild ride.
5:00 Tell you what after that night Dan Shaughnessy must’ve been hoping that clip of him saying this quote would never be shown again...😬
I’m a Yankee fan and I remember rooting for the Rays that game. Great video
One of the best vids I've seen on this channel
How can you not love this game?!
This is probably the most well woven episode of rewinder I've seen so far. So many layers.
Welcome to a moment in history is one of my favorite catchphrases now XD
We need a "Collapse" vid on the 2013-14 New York Rangers
Bout damn time, I requested this almost a year ago. Such a great moment.
I literally learn something new every time I read or watch something about the greatest single day in sports history
Y'all should do a rewinder on "the comeback" game. 93' Oliers v Bills wildcard. Wilddddd game
Braves and Red Sox in September: What is protecting the wild card from the Cardinals and Rays?
Biggest choking jobs in MLB history
Man I remember that night. Watched that moment live. As a young Rays fan, It was incredible to witness.
same, i was close to turning it off as i had school the next day. Everything was perfect, especially the calls Brian anderson and dwayne stats made before the 3 run homer by longoria: "maybe, just maybe..." and "these are the kind of situations Evan was made for" and right after that statement Evan belted that homer.
