welcome to baseball Saturday. that doesn't sound right. anyway, hope you enjoy our latest Rewinder. it's one of the most Rewinder-y moments in baseball history and really happy with how the episode turned out. what episode y'all want to see next?
I feel that way about the Mariners "my oh my" call. That's how you know you're a real baseball fan. Regardless of the team, you just love seeing big moments
Cheek and Howarth were SUCH a good announce team. I remember how many years it took for Tom to win the Ford C Frick award after being nominated for like 8 years... He deserved to be in the Hall of Fame for that call alone, let alone his 4300 straight games called.
@Seanus Patricus Yeah, that's true. I can only really think of a couple non-baseball calls that stick out at me, like the Miracle on Ice or Havlicek Stole the Ball, but baseball is rich in calls like that. It's not that the other announcers are bad - perhaps it's that announcers can mentally prepare themselves for the situation? After all, Cheek had 4 pitches to think about what to say.
roguishpaladin I agree with you except that having seen it live myself, there was no way anyone expected he would hit a home run in that situation. So to uncork an all timer like ‘touch em all’ right in the moment like that is why cheek is in the hof. I agree that he would have had his call prepared beforehand but the modifier was next level stuff
Imagine being a 10 year old who loved baseball whose dad couldn't get tickets to the game, standing on the walking bridge off Front Street outside the park, with a radio listening to the crowd and the game at the same time, if not together.
I got to meet Joe Carter a few years back (meet and greet at a Vancouver Canadians game) and he was so kind and genuinely happy to see all the Jays fans. He greeted everyone with a big smile and handshake, getting pictures with everyone. I’m glad he was the one to hit the HR
LOL that's what I was going to say. It is only the 3rd of October. Unless you live right on the north pole, or are a cold blooded reptilian, it hasn't been cold anywhere up here. This moment ended Mitch's career. He was released 2 months into the following season in Houston and made sporadic appearances with the Angels and Royals before calling it quits. For every Mariano Rivera, there are numerous closers who flame out and never get it back.
There was a closer for the Red Sox( I believe) that gave up a big HR to lose the ALCS and ended up committing suicide over it. Someone can remind me all the details but I’m pretty sure that was the team.
@@jamesw1313 You might be thinking of Donnie Moore. He actually pitched for the Angels in 1986 and blew the save against Red Sox giving up a homer to Dave Henderson. The Red Sox went on to win the ALCS.
Thank you for using the Tom Cheek call. To this day, that call sends shivers up my spine and brings a tear to my eye. All the memories of that moment, 16 year old me watching at home, just come flooding back. It's a shame that most of the baseball media overlooks this moment when talking about top WS moments
Its #1 all time call in my opinion, and like you, watched it live as a kid (i think i was 9, maybe 10, born July 83), mindblown a WS ended on a walk off HR. Legit every boys dream aberration scenario as we played as kids. Theres always "just 3 seconds on the clock, gotta get a shot off, omg and he's fouled on the shot!" But dude really did it, 40k witnesses live, millions more on TV. Carter got to be every little kid for that 90 ft to 90 ft to 90 ft to home jog around the bases and into "instantly iconic"
If "Wild Thing" Mitch couldn't even finish off the San Francisco Giants during Game 5 of the 1989 NLCS, what were the chances for him to stump Joe Carter in the 1993 World Series? The answer, quoting Vince McMahon, Chairman of the WWE, NO CHANCE IN HELL.
Wild thing wasn't the same after this game. His career went straight in the tank where he was a free agent bust for the Houston Astros, then flamed out of California and KC before getting the hint that it is over.
This happened on my 11th birthday. I can still picture the scene as we had this game on throughout the party. I was already a fan, but this moment ensured that I will *ALWAYS* be a fan of the Blue Jays.
Problem is the most famous part of that game is Lonnie Smith pausing at 2nd base instead of going on to score...and there was still 2 more innings in the game so you couldn't rewind just to that moment.
@@Veaseify That was a very crucial moment, but the whole series in general was just a great storyline. Both teams were last in their divisions in 90, every win was at home, Morris going 10 innings. I’m sure there’s enough to justify a rewind
@@reidpreston2784 They usually focus on one defining moment though, Gene Larkin's winning hit is somehow less remembered than Lonnie Smith pulling up at 2nd for no apparent reason.
I grew up watching the Jays, and watched this game at home as it happened. I haven't watched any live sports in over a decade, but when this came up on my feed, it was an immediate click for me. Hearing Tom Cheek call this homer again brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for covering this moment, it means a lot to me.
Great memories. Saw a playoff game that year. Was at Yonge St in front of HMV with a huge crowd watching this game on the big screen. When Carter hit that homerun. The crowd erupted and it was a massive celebration like no other. It felt like a carnival all night into the morning. Great time.
I was 7 years old and my parents let me stay up to watch this. One of my best memories with my father was seeing how excited he got watching this. He didn't care much for baseball but seeing my brothers and I so excited made him happy. Sometimes a sport is more than just a game
@Harry Engel The pitching actually declined in 1993 BIG TIME. They had a lot of big names in the rotation...Morris, Stewart, Guzman, and Hentgen, but only Guzman had a decent FIP (3.77). It's crazy how Hentgen got 19 wins that year with a 4.61 FIP...it's safe to say that the Jays wouldn't have made the playoffs that year if not for their incredible offense.
Phillies fan here. That was a BRUTAL memory for me to relive, but I appreciate how well you did it. Please, lift me back off of the mat by doing a Rewinder of Tug Mcgraw striking Willie Wilson in 1980 to give the Phillies their first ever World Series. Bonus: We get to see that amazing Pete Rose catch again!!
Great video! I loved living through those times with the Jays. I just watched a panel with Joe Carter, Cito Gaston, Rickey Henderson, and Dave Stewart. When Joe swung at the really bad second strike pitch, he explained that Mickey Morandini stood in the perfect spot behind the pitcher where he lost sight of the ball because it blended in with Morandini's jersey. So he figured they were going to try that pitch again but if he could see that it was a good pitch, he was ready to act on instinct. And the rest is history. A great chat to watch, he went through exactly what he was thinking the whole at bat!
UrinatingTree beat you both to it a little while back. In longform. But yeah. It's not as bad, but imagine living in the louder, more sheep driven mentality of the general area populace with the Edmonton Oilers and their fans.
The best moment in Baseball. I hit a walkoff the same year to help my team win the eastern Canadian championship. It was was the best feeling I've ever had! Thank you Joe. You'll never hit another one as big as that one.
Been a Blue Jays fan since I was a kid, and I was about a month and a half old when they won their first series, and still barely comprehending with the repeat. Been a great team to watch from the highs of Bautista Vs. the Rangers to the lows of BJ Ryan taking the mound, always gonna be my favourite sports team, and my country's only remaining semblance of professional baseball.
This just made the Jays fan in me smile from ear to ear. This was one of those moments that brought a whole country together to celebrate. Just like the Raptors did last year.
My mom immigrated to Canada in 1992 and she didn't have a way to watch shows in Tamil, so she watched this exact baseball series. I remember the pure shock on both of my brothers faces hearing our mom go in depth on watching Joe Carter play this exact game, because we went like 20 years without a mention of the fact that she was into sports, ever. This video was incredible. Thank you so much for it.
I remembered that Drake used a picture of the crowd in the 1993 World Series as a single cover for Back To Back. And yes, the Phillies played in that series and Meek Mill is from Philly.
Theres something about Philadelphia and Toronto, we beat them here and last year in the NBA conference finals in a crazy game seven for the Raptors first chip also.
As a lifelong Blue Jays fan, I get goosebumps every time. “Touch ‘em all, Joe”. Great call from one of the all-time greats in Tom Cheek. Perfect ending!
Thanks for this. I requested this several times and am glad to see this come out :) Glad you added the Cheek call as along side Jerry Howarth these guys provided great radio calls for us here in Southern Ontario.
Myself and many others suggested this one, and for that, I thank you for putting it together. Toronto doesn't always get a fair shake for its classic moments when playing in the US-centric leagues, but it's always great when channels like this one share with everyone the sentiment of that magic moment.
I watched this game as a kid and thinking how cool it was. Wasn't a baseball fan per se, but you don't have to be to appreciate joy and euphoria like this.
Rewinder on one of: Cavs drafting Anthony Bennett in 2013, the end of Nuggets vs. SuperSonics in 1994 or Raja Bell's shot against Clippers in OT in 2006.
As a Blue Jays fan who came 5 years too late to experience this moment in all of its glory in a deeper context of that season, this video was awesome. Though I have the Joe Carter call memorized, I wish I was around to see this glorious moment in Toronto sports history.
I’ve watched this game and this moment so many times in my life, and I never get tired of it! Thanks for doing a deep dive on one of the biggest moments in Blue Jays history.
As a life long Jays fan, this is easily the greatest memory that I have. That series was incredible, it was a battle of two teams with insane scoring power. That Jays line up was the best that I have ever seen. I was not as big of a Carter fan as most, but his leadership and charisma are undeniable to this day. I really loved watching Molitor hit, as he was the consistent of them all.
Could you please do another baseball thing!! Either a collapse of the 2000s-2010s Phillies, or rewinders of either Roy Halladays post season no hitter in his first ever playoff start, or the 2017 WS game 5. That game 5 might need one of those rewinders where it skips forward to 2020 and the scandal.
I remembered more about this team than I expected. Nearly every one of the Blue Jays' names tripped a memory from childhood. Guess I was more into our boys as a kid than I thought.
Haven't Phillies fans suffered enough? Why do you have to hurt us like this? That being said, I hate myself so can you please to a collapse of the 2008 Phillies?
Dude! That was a super fun video! I love the way you do it without a ton of boring stats. I'm tired of stats. They don't even come close to capturing the excitement of baseball. You do. To great effect. Thanks man!!
Thank you so much for this. My Make-a-Wish was to stay in one of those wild expensive SkyDome hotel rooms overlooking the field and meeting my hero, Joe Carter. I'll never forget being 11 years-old, draped resplendently in Blue Jays attire, crying my face off that the Jays were going to lose (I was/am sensitive. Fight me. Actually don't, I'm sensitive). After falling asleep in a couch pillow soaked with the tears of my innocence, my dad shook me awake, pointed to the TV, and ::CRACK:: Joe Carter became the most important man on the planet (sorry, Dad), replacing Candy Maldonado as my favorite ball player. He was my favorite because his name was Candy and I was 9. But now, I was a rugged 11 years old, and racist face Curt Schilling's Phillies could suck a butt. Thank you, Seth. I can't wait to show my dad.
So I have a crazy story on how my dad got the 1992-93 rings from the jays So my dad was an accountant for the jays during this stretch and apparently staff members get a ring too, and then he quit after those seasons because of a strike
Being from Toronto, but also being born 4 years after this moment I only hear legends about this game. I honestly can't say how many times I've watched this clip but every time I get goosebumps. And Tom Cheek's call is absolutely brilliant and is immortalized here in Toronto. Easily one of the greatest sports announcers to ever live. RIP. So incredible that one of the greatest moments in sports history happened in our backyard.
Well at least philly phans like me only had to wait another 15 yrs. thanks for reminding me of the countless nightmares resulting of that pitch that I never saw carter touch the plate till yrs later. Yes!!!! I have been asking for this forever! Thank you!!!!!!
If nothing else, this story should remind all of us that Curt Schilling is a tool
Yep, still deserves to be in the hall though. being a decent person is not a prerequisite. see: Ty Cobb
@@hirshja The in-depth research that I've seen from historians gives me the impression that Cobb has been unfairly smeared.
Costa Zambaras madison bumgarner wants a word
@Costa Zambaras so many bad takes rolled in one, gotta be a troll.
He'll block you on Twitter if you tweet that towel on the head picture at him
I’ve watched this game and this moment so many times in my life, and I never get tired of it! Thanks for doing a deep dive on one of the biggest moments in Blue Jays history.
I remeber watching this game wjhen i was 9. Touchem all Joe!
FINALLY!!! I've been asking for this since the first episode!
Shoutout to the host for pronouncing Toronto like us Torontonians would!
Thank you for treating one of the best moments in baseball history which such care and respect. I’ll never forget that day
I'm a proud blue Jay's fan. Wasn't alive to witness it live but still a legendary moment
Same
Get off my lawn!
The phrase "welcome to a moment in history" never fails to give me goosebumps.
I rememeber watching this laying on the floor at my friend's house.
Really don't need to see that episode of Collapse.
My dad and grandfather were at this game. I have a home video of this moment. So cool
RIP Tom Cheek and Tony Fernandez.
and John Cerutti and Mike Flanagan
And Darren Daulton
I remembered more about this team than I expected. Nearly every one of the Blue Jays' names tripped a memory from childhood. Guess I was more into our boys as a kid than I thought.
Haven't Phillies fans suffered enough? Why do you have to hurt us like this?
That being said, I hate myself so can you please to a collapse of the 2008 Phillies?
Yes
As a son of the City of Toronto, I thank you for a much deserved deep rewind.
Damn. I'm really early on this one.
Anyway, when is Larry Bird's steal getting a rewind?
Or the Havlicek steal
Obama
I love these videos because it's like taking a little trip into a corner of history I had no clue even happened. Keep it up!
As a Jays fan, I miss the days when fireworks went off for home runs. We definitely gotta bring that back.
Awesome job. I watched every minute of that series and Joe's walk off game winning homer is an indelible memory.
Can we get a rewind on Fisk’s homerun in Game 6 of the ‘75 World Series
Dude! That was a super fun video! I love the way you do it without a ton of boring stats. I'm tired of stats. They don't even come close to capturing the excitement of baseball. You do. To great effect. Thanks man!!
Joe Carter caused Kevin Garrity to get that Toronto hooters waitress pregnant, and then young Julian McGrath was born.
😂😂...Big Daddy
Will B. Smooth 😂 I knew the real ones would remember
💯💯💯
Chicken wings and Molson 3-0
It also helped Sonny Koufax become a more responsible human being as well.
A rewinder we've been needing for a while.
@@curmudgeonaf Oh man! 11 year-old me is dying of jealousy!
As a 10 year old that was a die-hard blue jays fan and Joe Carter being my favorite player, this gives me goosebumps. Great video :)
TOUCH EM ALL
joe, you'll never hit a bigger home run in your life
This moment Always gives me goosebumps, World Series clinching walkoff, one of the greatest moments in MLB history.
Toronto:
Crushing the hearts of Philly fans since 1993
Except the Maple Leafs :P
"TOUCH EM ALL JOE YOULL NEVER HIT A BIGGER HOME RUN IN YOUR LIFE". Thank you for putting the call in this video! Absolutely iconic
i've never been this early.
Thanks for reliving this moment. I was watching at a local bar and it just exploded into the street for a wild party.
To Clara Morris: next time you do a “Rewind”, make sure to take the red car VHS rewinder from Seth!
Wish she’d get dropped from the channel.
@@thejmc4074 bruh what the hell do you have against Clara
@@thejmc4074 wtf clara's great
The JMC bro she’s great what are you on?
As a Canadian I watched that moment! Thanks for covering it
So I have a crazy story on how my dad got the 1992-93 rings from the jays
So my dad was an accountant for the jays during this stretch and apparently staff members get a ring too, and then he quit after those seasons because of a strike
Not so crazy... seriously
I remember this moment so well
Thank you for the memories to warm this old Canadian heart
Watched this on a 10" color TV with 8 people in a kitchen in St Johns NL
Awesome, watched it with my Dad here in St.Johns also! Never forget it.
@@jojokabo78 Was in a bar just off Yonge street. We poured out onto the street and soon there were hundreds of thousands of revelers.
Thanks for this! I remember watching this as a kid and then I got to relive the moment with Sports Illustrated Year in Sports 1993 vhs tape.
Well at least philly phans like me only had to wait another 15 yrs. thanks for reminding me of the countless nightmares resulting of that pitch that I never saw carter touch the plate till yrs later.
New to this channel like these breakdowns. But you really missed out on highlighting one of the most entertaining teams on and off the field. Dykstra, Krurk, Dalton, and of course schilling each could each be an entertaining rewind.
Fing Joe, nah still can’t say his last name.
This was a great little video and I loved the contextualization that went into it. I'm very familiar with the game having watched it nervously in my living room all those many years ago.
Thanks for the video.
I never watch Baseball, or any sport other than football really. But these are always so good. You all do such a great job that you make me fall in love with thwse games and players I have never heard of. You're all great at what you.
