Andy Dalton's last-second chance to be the hero of Buffalo needs a deep rewind | Bengals-Ravens 2017

  • Over the last few months, I can't think of a video y'all have asked for more than this. Week 17 of the 2017 NFL season, Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens, less than a minute to play. The Bengals are down three and are facing a 4th-and-12 that could either be the snap that ends their disappointing season, or it could spark something special - both a positive moment for Cincinnati to head into the New Year on, and an even more positive moment for the city of Buffalo.
The Bills are holding their breath down in Miami. Their game is over and they need the Bengals to win here in order to make the playoffs. That might not sound like too huge of a deal to some, but for Bills fans, it's the closest they have been to the postseason in nearly two decades. While the odds of that happening are still not amazing, they're made a little trickier by the Ravens. They've got a bit more to play for than the Bengals - make this stop and they're heading to the postseason themselves.
While it's just a single snap, there's a lot more going on that's about to get overshadowed. So, it's time to rewind.

I was a senior in High School when this happened. Years before, in 7th grade, me and a friend had made a bet with our English Teacher. If the Bills made the playoffs while we were in school, we could dump the water cooler she had in her room on her head. My family went absolutely insane when Boyd made the catch. All I could think about was going into school after Christmas break a few days later, walking into her room with my friend, and her just sighing and laughing at the fact we had remembered after 5 years. Also to be noted, I was not alive the last time the Bills had even made the playoffs, so this was a great day for me.

December 30 I get taken to the hospital, then transferred to a mental institute to recover and dry out. I woke up at about noon on the day of this game to get in line for lunch, and the guy in front of me has on a Bills shirt. I should mention we're 1000 miles from Buffalo. So, now I have an instant best friend. And sure enough, we watch later that day as this play puts our beloved Bills back in the playoffs. Yeah. That’s what makes it suspicious to me. The overly hyped response for barely skating into the playoffs with a meager wild-card birth. Like they were gonna get far with Tyrod Taylor. These guys can’t be that happy to have to go to work for one more week.
Seems like a programmed response. There were blatant missed tackles by Ravens 26 and 24 at the end. (12:56). Seems like the situation was set up.
I’m not here to say “Hey, all your heroes are lying.” or that “Football is fixed.” No. I love football. It’s awesome entertainment. If it is fixed, sometimes it’s fixed in my favor, sometimes it’s not. Just like life.
Actually, it makes the game that much more entertaining, spotting the times when the fix is on. I don’t complain because it’s just a game. You win some, you lose some.
I’m a Steelers fan, take their playoff game against the Browns last season, for example.
You can spot the fix when Maurkise Pouncey, 9 Pro-Bowls, 5 All-Pros, ....at the very beginning, no pressure at all, snaps the ball over Roethlisberger’s head. Professionals don’t do that unless they are told to do that.
I never felt this way about NFL football until the Minneapolis Miracle happened. That was the clearest instance of a scripted outcome of pro football.
Again, I’m not here to tear down football, I’m just hear to suggest an additional way for you to enjoy the great game of NFL football. Spotting the fix.
You can also spot the fix here at 7:57 when #10 for Baltimore bobbles the football to set up the interception by Darqueze Dennard. Pro Football wide receivers are highly trained, HIGHLY TRAINED, to catch the ball a certain way. Like with two hands against their body. The ball was thrown to his gut. He manufactures a bobble to get it in the air. Then watch the run back. Nobody tries to tackle him. Especially Joe Flacco at the end. He just retreats at the last second. I don’t know, I could be wrong. Darqueze may have tried a misdirection, it’s hard to tell because the original footage is in fast-motion.

My favorite play in all of sports. I was born in 2001 in Maryland. However, my dad (from Buffalo) raised me a Bills fan and my entire life the Bills were an embarrassment. I would be ashamed to go to school wearing Bills gear because I knew I would get picked on because of it. I remember going into that week feeling hopeless, as if the Bengals stood no chance against the Ravens. At half time, I finally began to believe that this could be the year, only for the tides to turn in the Ravens favor in the second half. When Dalton threw that ball to Boyd, I could not believe it. However, what made it all the better was walking into school with all of my Bills clothes, knowing NO ONE could say anything to me about it anymore. The moment should be between Burfict/AB and the FG kick, with the Steelers coach taking the field illegally to taunt Pacman Jones into brushing past a ref, who only called a penalty on Pacman and not the coach illegally on the field AND taunting (worth noting that earlier in that game a Steeler coach was flagged for yanking a Bengals player's hair).

This game has had such a huge ripple effect. If the Bengals don't win here, that means the Bills don't make the playoffs in 2017. Which means McDermott would likely have been fired after 2018 for 2 straight non-playoff seasons, which means Josh Allen would not have developed into what he is now.
The Bills need to send the Bengals a fruitbasket for every year for the next decade.
