    Quick info for practice pad geeks: I think the black promark mentioned is nowadays marketed as "billy hyde" practice pad, it looks identical. Practice pads with beads giving the snare sound are available from Ahead (vic firth had also a model, the vic pad, but it's discontinued).

    I bought a Sabian Quiet Tone after watching your videos. I like it a lot and is a great complement to the Evans RealFeel I used before. But yes it's weaker when playing quiet and it almost feels like there's some small space between the skin and the surface underneath. Tried to "tune" it, but it didn't really make any difference. To bad the older ones are hard to get by. Great video as usual!

    Rick,
    Really, keep the content up. I think I heard you mention that you are making more lesson-oriented videos with the digitalization of things during this period of time. You have become such an amazing resource for all students. You're experienced and knowledgeable, friendly, and also, able to produce interesting and informational videos. I guarantee you this channel will grow significantly at some point in the next few years, and you will become a much larger name within the online percussion world.

    • @jonastechmanski1592
      @jonastechmanski1592 4 года назад +1

      Also, one piece of advice for enriching your channel: Make some playlists for students. You've got a lot of videos, but, if you can organize them, you've just stepped farther into being a great teacher, not to mention how satisfying it will feel once your done. Some examples may be: Pratt's 14 Modern Solos, Original Pieces, Drum Set, et cetera.

      Hi
      Thanks for the kind words. I am not that interested in growing bigger. I would prefer that the channel serve serious players like yourself so I do not advertise at all. I don't make any money off the channel so growth is not a concern. I enjoy doing the videos and I love to teach and perform so I am doing all of that here. This channel is my gift to all of my students.

    Rick- I found one of the Ludwigs at a local thrift store. My question is do they still make the replacement heads for those? I seem to remember the heads being an actual drum head but can't remember. They're only asking $30 and the stand is included. And it's the larger one like the one you have. (20 minute mark or so). Let me know if the heads are still manufactured.
    I'd love to add this one to my collection of maybe 15 or so pads. My favorite pad in my collection is the Ram Pad Pro. A very responsive pad. Thanks in advance for the infop.

      @rickdior  2 года назад

      Hi Dennis
      I do not know if they still make the heads but I doubt it. I was at the Ludwig factory recently and it looks like they have really scaled back their drum head availability. If the head is in good shape buy it. You can try a coated tom head but I have not tried that.

      was not available. I may do a little research and go from there. I have a
      fairly large arsenal of pads anyway but this one has particular meaning
      since my first drum teacher used one exactly like it and our section

      There are several pads you can use for brushes. Anything with a coated head will work fine. Even a cardboard box will work in a pinch!

      Thanks for the info. Ludwig has several thread sizes?? didn’t know that. I have a second pad from the 60s that fits onto the old flat base. The one I’m asking about does not fit on any stand that I have. I’ve tried over a dozen. The shaft is thicker like on a modern stand but the threads need to be more coarse, like the Hercules models from the 70s and 80s I am guessing.

    I’m really confused on something with the Gladstone style rubber vacuum pads - about a year and half ago I helped a buddy restore an old acrolite that came with a Yamaha branded pad, and it just sounded like a practice pad/no snare response so we got rid of it. Just a few days ago, I picked up an acrolite for myself and it had the Ludwig branded pad - and to my surprise and delight it sounds great with a bit of snare response from the drum. If I recall correctly the other Yamaha one was thicker, but you said something here about how some drums will get a snare response from these and others won’t - can you elaborate on which ones work or not, and why? Can’t seem to find any answers on the forums etc.

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  Год назад +1

      The Gladstone type pads with the metal disc under the rubber worked best for capturing a bit of snare sound. The old Ludwigs had that disc. The weight of that pad helped it sit heavy on the drum and enabled it to pick up some snare vibration.

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  4 года назад

      Hi
      Sounds like you might have a defective pad. When Sabian first took over the patent they changed the parts which resulted in several years worth of very bad pads. They have fixed this issue in the last 2 or 3 years.
      I never like to play or practice on anything but a real drum head so I do not use a real feel pad

    • @germangismondi944
      @germangismondi944 4 года назад

      @@rickdior yes, another info is that the original drum mute pad, was not conceived for use with a drum head. the inventor just proposed the same pad that "drum mute" brand, but without a drumhead on top. just a plastic. so, if you take the drum head away,
      you will have the original pad, just as it was intended, and you will feel a more "bouncy" surface, but not for brushes. i think that the drum head mounted on the original pad, was a later idea.

    • @rickdior
      @rickdior  4 года назад +2

      That is incorrect. I have a Henry Adler original drum mute that is 50 years old. That's who invented and patented it. It has a real drum head. Once again, you should practice on a real head. Playing on rubber creates artificial feedback that is not similar to a real drum. If you play on a rubber pad for most of your practicing when you are developing technique and then move to a real head there will be issues with control of the natural rebound. I have seen this time and time again with students. If you already have excellent technique it's not a big deal. The problem is when students learn on rubber and then try to move to a real drum which is completely different then a piece of rubber. Most of the problems occur when learning traditional grip on rubber. Students never learn to use their fingers correctly and end up playing stiff with the traditional (weak) hand.

    • @germangismondi944

      United States
      check google pat. may be is the same pad but with modifications after Adler's pad. I teach using a snare drum, because no pad is real, even the quiet tone and adlers pad. the physic of a snare drum is based on air rebound. is not just the kind of the sueface but the air inside of the shell. I agree with you about that is not recomended to play on rubber pad for beginners players. I play on real feel gum rubber because i have the technic learned and gum rubber feels good. I am working on create a practice pad based on "air reboud" i hope to do it! I invite you to suscribe in my channel if you want. Thank you!

      You will hear the drumhead tone (a kind of rototom effect), unless you heavily mute it. Also, to me it feels like the structure won't take enough tension to tune the head above a medium tuning, which is unusable if you look for the common medium high/ high snare drum tuning.
