Fabulous, informative overview and grooviest drumming
Rick you are one of my favorite drummers to watch and learn from. You really are amazing and full of knowledge!
Thanks Kevin
I’ve always wanted to learn how to play like this... I’ve found my Jedi Master Rick Dior
LOL Thanks Man, I am about the same size as master Yoda!
Some contemporary players (like Marcus Gilmore) are now using 16” hi-hats! When I saw him last playing with Chick Corea in an acoustic trio, he was using a 16” K. Custom Special Dry Crash for the top and and a vintage K on the bottom. Sounded great!
True even though that man can play on anything including z bel hats etc but yes the 16 are popular today but cats are going back to the 14s Steve Jordon uses 17s really doesn't play jazz Cris Dave uses two and three hats all different sizes effects tony played 15s bottoms later in life mostly I guess what ever feels good! sound good my man you always do enjoy your videos great content
Great info - I too was guilty of too tight top hat - interesting tip about the rubber grommet’s - Thanks Rick.
You are one if the best man.
Like to know if listen to Brian Blade ?
I’m very influenced by Krupa and Brian.
Imagine those ingredients in a pot.
Stir well and let simmer for 45 minutes 😎
goddamned, here I was thinking I'm a pretty good drummer and then I see this s.o.b. going crazy... You're awesome man, glad to have found your instructional video's.
I like your take on drum and bass!
Awesome video. I really liked those 13" Bosphorus!
Great video, perfect mix of pedagogy, musicality, accurate advice. I'm gonna test the conic rubber for the tilter. Thanks !
I use a kerope top and a Zildjian edge for the bottom. Sounds neat. 😊
Sabian Hand Hammered for the win! My favorite pair of hats are my 14" HH Medium Hats. I have 13" HH Fusion Hats on my right mounted as open x-hats. HH is my favorite cymbal series; the HH hats sound great on literally everything from jazz, to loud rock! Almost my whole cymbal setup is HH... Crashes, rides, etc
Have 2 Sabian sets...the smaller quick grab/acoustic/jazz set ala Lewis/Hamilton is a set of 14" HH Dark hats...just killer...a 20" HH light ride, 18" HH Duo ride for left side crash/ride and a 20" HH chinese...have a riveted 18" HH medium crash as well...but the 3 together are just perfect I always end up taking it down.
Such wonderful playing. Really enjoying your vids, Rick!
Thank You Scott
You are the guy Rick!
Hi Rick,
Are the 15" A's mentioned played in any of your videos? I would love to hear how say sound:)
Hi
Yes, I play them in many videos.
Here is one ruclips.net/video/6fSkl8wpuKc/видео.html
If you read the description for the videos you will see equipment listed.
I have been using them on several videos in the last 6 months.
I have a pair of the 14" K/Z's absolutely love them
Yes, those are fantastic cymbals. The 13's are great as well.
I use to have a pair of those and sold them, I still have a pair of13” K Master Sound that I like more than K/Z.
I’m surprised that you don’t have KCons
I am a beginning drummer, learning jazz and latin. This is a great video, thanks!. What causes hi hats to ring? Is it me? Is it the cymbals themselves? Or something else that makes annoying overtones, especially when playing open and closed?
Hi Rick. Thanks for sharing.
I really liked the old K's a lot, also the Artisan ones.
Let me tell you something: for a long time I decided to cover the central section of the clutch with a thin rubber tape, in several turns or layers, not so many, because the top cymbal must to be loose, but enough to avoid the wear of the HiHat hole, due to the metal contact. Just as there are rubber pieces to protect the “suspended” cymbals, rides, crashes, etc.
For years of use without that protection, the metal-to-metal contact on one of my cymbals top, causes the enlarge of the hole, increasing the diameter and creating a kind of an oval hole. That causes it to be out of center over the bottom cymbal, which could be good for the air escape, but it doesn't work for me.
I would like to know your opinion about this advice, I think it is useful and I recommend it to you and your drummer followers. To me it has worked really fine.
By the way, I like the work that Eddie Gladden did on those live recordings with Dexter Gordon, great drummer.
Best regards.

Hi Miguel
I have not done that with my clutch but if it solved your problem then its a good Idea. I have not had an issue with the hole getting larger or any other issue with a clutch and the top high hat cymbal.
Very nice journey with those hi hats, what about the dream hi hats?, it seem that they are all interchangeable, I own one called Bliss, that sound quite interesting
hey Rick, ever checked ou the Bosphorus New Orleans HH's? if so, what is your impression? Thanks for all your wonderful playing and insights
Hi
Thanks for the kind words.
I have not played those hats. So many cymbals, so little time. I do own a set of Turk 13" hats that are really thin and I love them.
If you search on Bosphorus on this channel you will find the video where I play those.
fantastico! lo mejor que he oido hasta ahora!!!

These videos are fantastic !! I learn à lot .. thanks !! You’re swing is terrible
So is terrible good or bad.......LOL
@@rickdior it means good. I believe Christophe is french, and in french it’s a compliment (hear: amazing). I know, it doesn’t translate well :)
My wife had the same experience when she played in France. someone came to her at the end of the show, and said, “vous êtes terrible!” She was very confused. LOL
It's too late...the hitmen are on the way and I can't reach them!
Sounds like a famous Coen brothers’ movie, where things go wrong… :)
And thank you @rickdior . Your channel is a gold mine of great educational content. Really enjoying your videos and your playing!
Oh ! It’s terrible !!! I know you are a killer.. i listen your vidéos.
