    Some contemporary players (like Marcus Gilmore) are now using 16” hi-hats! When I saw him last playing with Chick Corea in an acoustic trio, he was using a 16” K. Custom Special Dry Crash for the top and and a vintage K on the bottom. Sounded great!

      True even though that man can play on anything including z bel hats etc but yes the 16 are popular today but cats are going back to the 14s Steve Jordon uses 17s really doesn't play jazz Cris Dave uses two and three hats all different sizes effects tony played 15s bottoms later in life mostly I guess what ever feels good! sound good my man you always do enjoy your videos great content

    Sabian Hand Hammered for the win! My favorite pair of hats are my 14" HH Medium Hats. I have 13" HH Fusion Hats on my right mounted as open x-hats. HH is my favorite cymbal series; the HH hats sound great on literally everything from jazz, to loud rock! Almost my whole cymbal setup is HH... Crashes, rides, etc

      Have 2 Sabian sets...the smaller quick grab/acoustic/jazz set ala Lewis/Hamilton is a set of 14" HH Dark hats...just killer...a 20" HH light ride, 18" HH Duo ride for left side crash/ride and a 20" HH chinese...have a riveted 18" HH medium crash as well...but the 3 together are just perfect I always end up taking it down.

      I’m surprised that you don’t have KCons

    I am a beginning drummer, learning jazz and latin. This is a great video, thanks!. What causes hi hats to ring? Is it me? Is it the cymbals themselves? Or something else that makes annoying overtones, especially when playing open and closed?

    Hi Rick. Thanks for sharing.
    I really liked the old K's a lot, also the Artisan ones.
    Let me tell you something: for a long time I decided to cover the central section of the clutch with a thin rubber tape, in several turns or layers, not so many, because the top cymbal must to be loose, but enough to avoid the wear of the HiHat hole, due to the metal contact. Just as there are rubber pieces to protect the “suspended” cymbals, rides, crashes, etc.
    For years of use without that protection, the metal-to-metal contact on one of my cymbals top, causes the enlarge of the hole, increasing the diameter and creating a kind of an oval hole. That causes it to be out of center over the bottom cymbal, which could be good for the air escape, but it doesn't work for me.
    I would like to know your opinion about this advice, I think it is useful and I recommend it to you and your drummer followers. To me it has worked really fine.
    By the way, I like the work that Eddie Gladden did on those live recordings with Dexter Gordon, great drummer.
    Best regards.
    Miguel De Vincenzo.
    Caracas, Venezuela.

      @rickdior  4 года назад +2

      Hi Miguel
      I have not done that with my clutch but if it solved your problem then its a good Idea. I have not had an issue with the hole getting larger or any other issue with a clutch and the top high hat cymbal.

      @rickdior  2 года назад

      Hi
      Thanks for the kind words.
      I have not played those hats. So many cymbals, so little time. I do own a set of Turk 13" hats that are really thin and I love them.
      If you search on Bosphorus on this channel you will find the video where I play those.
