- This is a short clip from my PBS 6 part television series, Making Sense Of The Sixties. I explored where the 1960s black student civil rights movement came from-that would produce such incredible leaders. And what happened when southern states fighting integrated schools closed the schools down, shocking the students and their parents. You can see many clips from my series on my RUclips channel by searching the word "60s".
Very happy to have lived in this era.... hard to raise a family today, not many believe anything from the past is valuable.
Anybody can be nobody but everybody can be somebody
our generation takes good education for granted
We don’t have good education today at all
I think they understood that education leads to wealth. Now athletes and musicians are seen as a way to get wealthy and they have nearly abandoned education in pursuit of those fields.
Funny how YT surpressed this, this is EVERYTHING the great Thomas Sowell has been talking about
I don't understand your comment. How did RUclips suppress my video?
David Hoffman filmmaker
@@DavidHoffmanFilmmaker Sorry for the confusion, sir. I’ll explain.
(My apologies for the length, but I want to be thorough since this is a very important topic that could be of deeper interest to you.)
.
RUclips and many of what is called “Big Tech” sites (Google, Facebook, Instagram, etc…) has been rather well-documented over the past recent years in regards to their suppression of “the difficult talks”.
As in, they actively writes and program their artificial intelligence algorithm to detect and “suppress” certain words or phrases that does not fit the Company’s Agenda.
In this case, your very well-made and important video touched upon a topic that a great Black intellectual, Dr. Thomas Sowell, has been writing and talking about for years.
.
Now, because it is not “hip” to talk about the heart of the hard problem, this case being how Segregated school in a culturally black neighborhood where adults are heavily invested into their children, that despite lack of fundings, managed to raised exceptional human beings- and this, like the gentleman in the interview said was because (and Im paraphrasing) “The teachers were part of the community, they knew your parents, so they could whoop you when you’re bad and tell your parents about it so they can whoop you too,”
This mindset of community driven changes, and not necessarily blaming on govt, or worse, the “Whites”.
Is considered to be “Republicanistic” in our modern days, as many black intellectuals, such as: Larry Elder, Brandon Tatum, Walter Williams, has been criticizing the degradation of the modern black cultures by using the past, which documentaries like yours as support, as an example of how the handout, hip hop, gangster rap, and the welfare state, all contributed to the decline of the black community.
.
That is why I made the comment of “Funny how YT suppressed this”, because your title is not what the YT’s algorithm AI favors. If you noticed, unless one is actively seeking on YT, one will not be recommended this fantastic video. For a video of such quality and important topic, and having been on this site since 2017, one would expect a view counts of much higher than a mere barely six thousands views.
This is because the AI is not trained to recommend materials that can help quells the tension and division, as well as shed light to the past as a mean of guidance, which this video provides.
.
I hope this answer is sufficient for you, thank you again for this great piece of documented history.
I think tougher circumstances made for better character. Really interesting to learn.
Look at members of the Silent Generation that experienced the depression and WWII. The ones belonging to the GOP want to destroy democracy. A tough life can make you go either way.
Less distractions in our era.
This women needs to be secretary of education!
When you're the "underdog" in society, it's that drive that folks use to be twice as smart as their contemporaries, that prevails
Watching this video and then reflecting on how good us Americans (all races) have it. The basic required public education in America is free and so many kids take it for granted.. cutting up in school, skipping school, getting into fights, not doing homework, etc. Even the textbooks are free. We have children in communist countries where they can't even get a free education and forced to work at an early age who wish they can be in someone's air conditioned classroom provided with free lunch, free transportation to and from school, free textbooks (those are not cheap), free instructors, etc. and then even have the opportunity to be recognized by Universities and all kinds of programs for their grades.. a highschool diploma that is FREE. Yet we have kids dropping out to be rappers, drug dealers, or work in fast food the rest of their lives. You can't even sign your life away to the military without a diploma or GED! Some public schools even provide more than needed to be successful. I wish more would take advantage of that and realize how blessed we truly are.
That is a beautiful statement. Those are facts
Back then kids liked to read and learn ,they didn't care to much about who had jordans on or Gucci purse. They were focused 99% on learning
That’s cuz of social engineering
Also if you misbehaved, or a teacher called your parents would lay the smack down on you.
Why do you assume they liked reading anymore than kids today? Because of the news? Because you saw a bunch of youngsters with weird clothes?
They actually taught you back then. They do not teach kids today.
@@keyratcane66 not always, it depended on the household . Just like now,not all kids got whoopins if they cut up. But back then the ones who didn't get slapped around for messing up usually got heavy chores that would make them not only behave ,but also learn appreciation for hard work.
When you continuously lower the bar in an attempt to level the field nobody excels.
integration is not the solution. clearly. but they should have been getting equal funding regardless.
man..
that's what injustice truly is. it hurts beyond just the societal, it's emotional and personal
