I would like to see Creative Assembly, the studio behind Alien Isolation, put that same splendor and flavor of survival horror and isolation into a The Thing game.
The game had some genuinely creepy and tense moments. It just got bogged down with what you should be doing in between encounters. Then later got ruined with generic military guy enemies.

@@notmychannelname42 clunky controls, aiming and spacial orientation. Generic monster hordes. Unclear instructions and action sequences. That's just off the top of my head. I could go on, but like I said, I do still like the game.
Not only is it was a sequel to the 1982 movie, it was even endorsed by John Carpenter himself as official canon. So much so, he makes a voice cameo later in the game. I dug it once the game got into its groove. But yeah, the whole game is deeply flawed and a product of the survival horror games of its time. (2002) There was supposed to be another one that fixed many of the issues, but the company went belly up before much production could be finished on it. Hopefully, another company steps up and makes another The Thing game with all the advances we've had in horror games since.
ShaggyTurtleStudios And James Cameron said Terminator Genysis was a great movie LOL Who cares what a director says? John Carpenter doesn't own the rights to The Thing, just because he "endorsed" it, doesn't mean jack. He didn't write or direct the video game, so no, it's not canon. The Thing story ended in 1982, it ended ambiguously. This shitty game would have you believe that MacReady lived, to come back in that silly ending, when he most likely (99.999999%) froze to death with Childs.
Talking about things that need games, Escape from New York would make a fucking wicked Stealth Action game. Also, this game looks way too dark. I think you guys should try upping the brightness on the game or the TV. I've seen gameplay of this game before and it's no where near as dark.
I remember playing this game on the PC. In fact, I still have it. Craziest thing was having someone so freaked out that they would just commit suicide. Also, the ending is seven different shades of fucking badass.
This game was a lot of fun to play as a kid. It was kind of difficult but once you got it down you really could appreciate the atmosphere and suspense. Also, I think this is the most terrifying alien to ever exist. Transforms people inside out, with blood spraying everywhere, then chases you around to try and absorb you. Scary stuff indeed.
A thing wouldn't have to replicate a person's brain in order to emulate their intelligence. The thing's consciousness would exist as an integral part of every single assimilated cell, and the biomass of the thing as a whole would act as its "brain". The more biomass a thing could collect, the more cells it would have to work with to increase the bounds of its own intelligence. However, every single cell of the thing would still have to contain a minimum of the thing's consciousness (including its will to survive above all else) and the blueprints of all the organisms it has assimilated. The thing wouldn't be able to copy a cell so well as to remove its own self from it. That's why the blood test worked - every single cell that made up the blood droplets still contained the thing's consciousness, but each individual droplet acted as a separate thing that was too small to maintain an intelligence that extended beyond simple survival instincts.
I actually think that would be an amazing idea for a new "the thing" game. You're a human checking out the base, but you're actually the thing trying to survive.
That "The Thing" movie they mention was not a remake at all, but was actually a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 film, detailing the events that took place over at the Norwegian camp prior to its discovery by the Americans. It actually wasn't bad at all, and the attention to detail towards the 1982 film is actually pretty spot on.
A survival-horror game set in a remote location with various NPCs with different skills, traits, roles, strengths, and weaknesses, each one with a different attitude towards you and any one of you could be The Thing!
you just described this game dude. from multiple playthroughs of this i can tell you that certain npcs handle weapons way better than others, some are always the thing and others are scripted or will turn if you abandon them with a thing (i check on a remote camera you cant see the infection sadly) and depending on if you shoot teammates, take or give items or test yourself, they will trust you more or less). there are also a few classes of npc. hate the bullet sponge bosses but ammo is essentially infinite if you have a crate nearby so its just a time sink for the most part. last boss was ripped off for the lambent brumak in gears 2 for some reason.
The kind of survival-horror game I'm thinking of is more RPG-ish with limited shooting and slower pace, even during action sequences. The fact the imitations never try to sabotage you is another element missing in this game and I would love to see that done in another stab at this series. Like imagine giving a flamethrower to a team-up to improve his trust in you, only to have him turn that flamethrower onto you since you both are alone and you have no flamethrower now. Would really help make the player paranoid about his teammates. There is also never a moment where you can become infected and sometimes the infected team-mate stuff is utter bollocks. Grab blood test syringes, walk up to area you need to go, test them BEFORE entering and they check out okay, then walk into the area, trigger a little cutscene and test them all over again and suddenly they've spontaneously become infected!
Funny, I was just thinking of watching this film too. By the way, James, the 2011 film was actually a prequel not a remake! But I agree, it was pretty forgettable unfortunately. While this game actually follows from the original 1982 film.
They could make an awesome multiplayer game out of The Thing where you don't know who to trust because anyone could be an alien and of course every character would be controlled by real players and you would need to figure out who the alien is, find weapons etc. But the map would have to be randomly generated, and it would be awesome if sometimes the match had animals which could be aliens but if they are not and you keep it alive it would help to hunt the alien down, like how the dogs realised that the new dog was an alien.
If you liked this game, I urge you to try, "Extermination". It was one of the earliest survival shooter games on Ps2. It's a lot like a Resident Evil game. You're a Marine sent to investigate an arctic laboratory. The whole place is fucked. Your team gets infected. All these alien critters evolve into crazy beast Things. It's difficult as can be. I have a decent file in my possession.
I like that you turned the lights off....the blue glow creates the right atmosphere for this game. The only "thing" lacking is some sort of scary stuff going on in the shelves behind James & Mike ;)
There already is a sequel to "The Thing". It was done in four comic series by Dark Horse in 1991 to 1994, starting with a direct sequel two-part comic titled "The Thing From Another World". It was then continued later in the "Climate of Fear" 4-part comic series, then a 4-part story in Dark Horse Comics called "Questionable Ethics" and finally finishing in the "Eternal Vows" 4-parter.
I used to have this game back when PS2 was big. I really liked this game. The emotions of the NPC effecting what they do was something really new back then. Overall, it was a fun game.
Anyway, I had this game on Xbox. It's so underrated. The use of the temperature and building trust with other members of your team was critical in surviving the game. Sum 41 had a song in this game, I believe. It's sad the sequel to the game was never developed it's basically what James described. The Thing got loose and they take the fight to a small town in Antarctica? It would have been interesting to see the newer enemies, too. The developers, Computer Artworks, folded before it happened.
this is what you do. set the health bar to always visable, use flares and torches in dark areas, small things are killed by guns, large things need to have their armour destroyed by guns then use fire. there is a first person mode where you can lean left and right, could for looking and shooting round corners, also all flame weapond shoot at the floor normaly to slow the things down, use furst person mode to aim it. make sure lock on is enabled.
The Thing prequel movie wasn't (as of my opinion), as bad as many make it out to be... Sure, Carpenter's movie is a classic and on a league of it's own, that's the fact. And the prequel would have been better, with practical effects. But I say, it's mainly a better movie, than the reputation it has gotten... Not a masterpiece, but ok nonetheless.
Yes exactly. Apart from some unreal animations, the movie really got the intense moments of not knowing who is a ' thing' on point. It's not a simple movie that relies on jump scares, which is often a cheap way of scaring the fuck out of people. The fear is based upon the constant anxiety of encountering a horrible creature that could assimilate you within seconds.
Dude, the most recent Thing movie was a prequel that explained the intial findings of the spaceship/species. It even shows the beginning of the original movie at the end and shows how they tie together. It was good, not 'forgettable', but i agree the cgi was kind of a let down, although im pretty sure they combined animatronix with cgi in some instances. The environmental detail was great though. they actually show you how the burnt corpse piles from the Norwegian camp happened, and it shows even how the Norwegian camp got destroyed, almost exactly the way it was in the original.
The thing (2011) acts as a remake and a prequel to the thing (1982). It's about what happened to the other scientific base that the thing destroyed, as seen in the 82 version. The end of the 2011 film sets up the beginning of the 1982 version with the dog running away and being chased by a helicopter. But I agree it wasn't that good of a movie, just pointing out that it was still connected to the original film.

shoots at him and flames engulf him but is unfazed. "I don't think so" is what I think he said. This game is just the beginning. Then you had to fight through a whole squadron of special ops and finally kill the big thing whitley. I remember so much of this!
This game had so much potential, but was absolutely ruined by scripted events that violated the basic concept. You could test your teammates prior to entering a room and they would pass the test, indicating they are human. However, as soon as you walk through the door, they would turn into "the thing", even though they passed the test as being human a second ago. The test was basically useless, and only existed to give you the illusion you had some choice in the situation. Such a shame.
This game was a rental back in the day and I absolutely loved it. I feel like they nailed the isolation atmosphere and vibe of the movie. I may be biased though because I love that movie. I was amazed to see any extension of that.

Play Winback on PS2.
MarcsLab like a dark souls game
Winback was awesome! But its better for N64 even without the updated graphics :p
MarcsLab that game was fun
Play Winback on N64
Anyway, I had this game on Xbox. It's so underrated. The use of the temperature and building trust with other members of your team was critical in surviving the game. Sum 41 had a song in this game, I believe. It's sad the sequel to the game was never developed it's basically what James described. The Thing got loose and they take the fight to a small town in Antarctica? It would have been interesting to see the newer enemies, too. The developers, Computer Artworks, folded before it happened.
Play Star Trek Bridge Crew (PS VR) on James & Mike Mondays
Strobo I'd love to see that
this is what you do. set the health bar to always visable, use flares and torches in dark areas, small things are killed by guns, large things need to have their armour destroyed by guns then use fire. there is a first person mode where you can lean left and right, could for looking and shooting round corners, also all flame weapond shoot at the floor normaly to slow the things down, use furst person mode to aim it. make sure lock on is enabled.
In the THING prequel animatronics WERE used as shown in the behind the scenes videos, and details and limbs were added
Just wanted to drop a comment and say thank you guys for all that you do, and have a great memorial day
this game was slept on and i will never understand why
Because movie based games automatically have a bad rap unfortunately
Yeah that is the reason. Almost all of them suck.
I feel like James & Mike Mondays should be livestreamed. Sounds like it would be a lot of fun
You guys should do a nerd episode about D and D2.
Agreed
Great video guys! The thing reminds me of some enemies in Chrono Trigger. Can't wait for you to play that next week! :)
6:37 is the best think Mike's ever said , cracked me up XD
Seriously, it's like you were asking for these comments playing a game with this title.
But I agree it wasn't that good of a movie, just pointing out that it was still connected to the original film.
turning the lights out is awesome. the atmosphere is more important than seeing every pixel on you guys's faces.
Wow your camera looks great in low light. Good move!
CINEMASSACRE: The 2 video choices didn't come-up at the end of this video.
They displayed as blank boxes. I haven't seen this before so I wanted to give you a heads-up.
I loved this game when it came out!
Also, Mike is a terrible back seat gamer.. :D
I can't believe this was an 80s movie , it fucking rocks , I like that it's slowly gets to the scary part it builds up the suspense
I heard Spoony hated this game.
You seen the review?
I love it when Mike yells "Fuck 'em up! Fuck 'em up!" He reminds me of one sleazy managers from the old WWF wrestling days.
Watching you guys play more modern games is frustrating
O man this takes me back! I watched my cousin begin and finish this game. intentionally started at midnight so i could be scared as all hell... It worked!
I had the same experience with my little cuz. Ryan, is that you? :D
GAME OVER WHITLEY
shoots at him and flames engulf him but is unfazed. "I don't think so" is what I think he said. This game is just the beginning. Then you had to fight through a whole squadron of special ops and finally kill the big thing whitley. I remember so much of this!
Amazing game. I remember playing and enjoying it thoroughly some decades ago.
Old 3D game seems worse? Have you played Ape Escape 1 ? Fucking amazing
I gotta say, I really enjoy the no lightning thing. It creates an atmosphere reminiscent of my childhood. You should do more like this.
people think The Thing (newest) movie was a remake, but it was actually a prequel. It has many references leading to its predecessor
The re-make was a prequel, the run up to the husky in the original camp basically.
I was more of a Christine Fan.
KWKBOX Dreamcatcher was good
Nice! You should always have the lights out for every horror game! =D Nice touch!
James and Mike we love these videos but... DO SOME FUCKIN RESEARCH ON THE GAME YOU'RE GOING TO PLAY, just read the Wiki page, Damn lol
ive been waiting for this, hope a long play will be uploaded...great video as always
