@@GoodGuysCarry I dont know how you see these things... but if you live in a society you already follow endless ammount of rules every single day. If you think that being able to carry a knife, or a gun, makes you somehow prevail/go over that line from unfree to free....I dont see it that way at all.

I'm with you on the value and utility of a fixed blade. I am a (hobby) knifemaker, so each custom knife gets a custom sheath. I have as much fun making the leatherwork as I do the knives.
And yes, at 72 years old now, the arthritis in my hands can make opening a folding blade a little slow these days.
More videos like this please ! Fun and informative to watch.

This is a very informative video. When I was working for an oil company, I was a troubleshooter for 220 miles of gasoline/diesel pipeline. I caried a Swiss army knife. It became a very handy tool for many uses.
My son use to make knives. I have two of his. One is a hunting skinning knife made with 440 stainless steel and coco bolo handles. The other is made with an old primary chain of my Harley that he beat into a bar of steel in his forge, and then made a knife blade also with coco bolo wood handles.
I use to carry it along with the Swiss army knife. I still carry a small version Swiss army knife in my pocket. It is a fairly compact knife with 2 blades, a reamer, a cork screw, a bottle opener with a screw driver end, and a can opener.
I also carried a line mans knife for working on wire and cable as all our pump stations were powered by 2400 volt electric motors. I know, 2400 volt electric motors pumping 1400 pounds of pressure on gasoline! You just don't make any mistakes. I did it for 26 years, and I am 84. I always felt like God was watching over my shoulder as I worked alone most of the time.

I always carry a pocket knife, a small flashlight, and a leatherman on my waist as a truck driver. The pocket knife comes in handy with preparing food or any other generic cutting needs. The leatherman I use to cut open trailer seals and replacing air seals on the glad hands. Plus having the serrated blade in that leatherman would allow me to cut my self out of my seatbelt in an emergency. Now the flashlight I mean I work in the dark just as much in the day it’s good to have a good light on you.

Currently in my pocket is a kershaw mixtape the blade steel isn’t the greatest but it gets the job done. Definitely wouldn’t mind investing in a nicer blade. The flashlight is a stream light micro stream. I like it cause it’s really pocketable, but also has a reverse pocket clip so I can clip it to the brim of my hat, if I need both hands.

Fun subject. I agree with carrying a fixed blade. I always carry an ESEE PR4 in a kydex sheath inside the waist band weak hand side. This keeps my strong hand available for my handgun. I also carry a Kershaw Blackout that is on its second blade, which I have had for twenty-five plus years on the strong side cliped in my pocket.. The Blackout is spring assist, which opens really as quickly as a swichblade. I have always carried some form of knife since I was certified by my Cub Scout Den Mother back in the early seventies. Yes, as a kid I carried all the way up thru high school, it really wasn't a problem back then as long as you weren't stupid with it. Great selection of knives you have. Thanks for sharing.

I'm working on 450 acres every day of the year, no matter the conditions, I've never left home without my 4.5" fixed blade... the one I carry currently was made specifically for me by my father in law (pays to have a blacksmith in the family) but even before that, I've always carried a 4-5", full tang fixed blade with a belt sheath... single button on the sheath, no aggressive piont, on a fatter blade for prying when necessary... made my own sheath out of scrap saddle leather and it fits exactly where I want it... couldn't agree more with you, a good knife is crucial for everyone, regardless your profession...

Getting in and out of the tractor it is perfect. I ordered another similar knife (CRKT Tuna spear point, 3.2" blade) so I can keep one in my work pants and the other in my coveralls.

One reccomendation I would make, if you buy a pocket knife, make sure to buy one that locks. I had a swiss army knife, and because the blade on those don't lock, i was using it and the blade folded and cut my index finger on the knuckle down to the bone. Thankfully, there was no permanent damage, and my finger healed fine, other than the scar it left, but that's why I share this, so you don't have that happen to you.

you for sure _can_ cut your cigar with a sharp knife - that's all I've ever done for cutting cigars.
first of all, you don't wanna try and make a straight cut across the cigar like you're cutting a sausage. instead hold the blade facing your thumb and rest the cigar between the thumb and the blade so it's perpendicular to the blade. all the while you're holding the cigar with your other hand for support. now make a small cut beneath the cap and then rotate the cigar while making a straight cut around the cap. basically, like if you're cutting insulation from a thick cable or cutting a garden hose in a circular fashion.
when you've cut the cap off, you can trim the leafs inside or straighten your cut by pushing the blade against them while you support the cigar with your thumb or even doing a little see-saw motion. it's not idiot proof and it takes a bit of care and practice or you will crack your wrapper, but it's very much doable. if worse comes to worst you'll crack your wrapper near the cut but it's not the end of the world, lick the crack as smooth as you can, smoke the cigar and try again.
the sharper your knife is, the better the results and the easier you get it done. and if your knife isn't sharp, you'll have a bad time. I find that this is also a good test for me to know when my knife needs touching up, if it starts giving me grief with cigar cutting.

    • @MuleSkinnerWS
      @MuleSkinnerWS 5 часов назад

I have done this. Sometimes it works well, but it has a high failure rate. I made it habit to carry a cheap cigar cutter daily, even when I'm not smoking. It takes up almost no space, and can be replaced for $2 if lost or broken. Whereas the average cigar costs $10-12... it's a no brainer for me.

    • @gavranarh
      @gavranarh 5 часов назад

@@MuleSkinnerWS I hear ya. My point was mainly that it can be done as I've been doing it for years. I really didn't wanna have to keep track of one more thing in my pockets while a knife is on me 99% of the time, so it was easier just to get good at it with that. Also you mention a high failure rate, now that's also subjective - what do you consider a failure and what do you consider a high rate. I've never messed up a cigar so I couldn't smoke it so I haven't had any real failures. About 1 in 10 or 1 in 15 cigars I'll crack the wrapper a bit and although I'm not pleased when it happens, I'm ok with that rate of failure.
Bottom line is I'm not advocating for this, it's certainly not a superior way of cigar cutting compared with specialized tools for the job. But it can be done is my point if you're in a pinch or even if you wanna not use anything else, like me. (As a matter of fact, I'm smoking a cigar I've cut with a knife as I'm typing this. :)

Sharp video. (Sorry, but I couldn’t resist.) I agree that everyone should carry at least a small pocketknife whenever possible. I was hunting pronghorn near Buffalo, Wyoming when my step son shot a nice buck right at the end of legal shooting light. We prepared to dress the buck when he realized he left his kill kit in the truck. When I took my kill kit out my pack and opened it, I dumped the contents on the ground and couldn’t find my knife in the thick sagebrush. Thankfully, I had a freshly sharpened Case Trapper in my pocket and he used it to dress the buck. I was able to find my knife the next day, but this just proved a pocket knife always earns its keep. Again, great video on a great subject.

Dewayne, I cut the caps of my cigars all the time. The key is to only make a small incision all the way along the cap and then peel with your finger tip. I have learned if you still have a vein sticking up, its best to leave it then to cut it. Thanks for the videos!

Though I grew up in urban areas, I learned to carry a knife wherever I'm legally able for over 20 years. Even prior to my military service, I kept a pocket knife handy, added a multi tool while in uniform (Gerber Supertool or equivalent) even though the latter is not always single handed operation.
Left pants pocket. Point up. Opens into the seam of my pants so it is less likely to deploy accidentally. That's been my MO for the last 15 years.
I'm about to get my son, 11, his first pocket knife. He'll know not to take it to school, museums, etc. Nothing terribly expensive, but it'll come in handy as he gets older and starts working.
    Thanks for the chat, Dewayne!

I carry a BUCK 113 on my belt every day. I was surprised by just how useful a small fixed blade can be, and I don't like digging around in my pockets with filthy hands.

I've tried lots of things. I work in an office. Not outdoors. A Swiss army knife attached to a small flashlight and a cigar punch does everything I need.

I guess I should add that everyday I carry a Victorinox multitool on my belt. When going into wildlands I also carry a Grohmann Canadian belt knife. I live in Texas and when I am out & about I am either in my truck or on foot. So, as you said my needs are different than yours, but the advice you provided is how I selected my “knives”. We agree everyone should always carry some sort of knife. I saw a video where the comedian, Jerry Seinfeld, who lives in New York City was saying what he carried every day and one item he was quite proud of was a Victorinox SAK. 🤷🏻‍♂️

You can now get the thumb studs for the 110 buck might help and they also make a new version of 110 with a pocket clip

With fixed blades the sheath makes the knife. It won’t matter how nice the knife is if it’s hard to get to, uncomfortable, or in the way.

Hello Dewayne. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. My name is Daniel, and I am a 17 year old boy from Norway, I always enjouy hearing what you have to say based on your experience, both on practical everyday things, and the deeper philosophical topics, you have helped me alot to get more mindful about life, thank alot!😃
I just have this one question, could you please make a video about what you wear in the winter? Here in Norway it gets quite cold, but I have not figured out yet what is the best way to cloth myself, I suppose it varies alot on the particular lifestyle one has, but I am eager to hear your thoughts on this, based on your experience🙂
Have a wonderful week, God bless you and your family🙏✝️

I carry a folding knife with me at all times. I live in a big city, work in an office and all, the knife is always there, and it is quite useful, I have even cut cake with it at the office last week, yes, someone brought a cake and no one had anything to cut it with...

I grew up in a very rural area. I got my first pocket knife when I was 12 and just always carried a knife. Years later, I ended up in Boston working some very corporate jobs. I carried a keychain knife all the time and kept a decent fold-out buried deep in my bag just in case.

Good video and nice knives.I've always had a thing for knives but as I've gotten older (same as you 57) I prefer locking or fixed blades.Anything that can happen usually does at some point and I don't like the idea of a razor sharp folding knife closing on my fingers.I have plenty of those but they're just keepsakes and for looks.

You need a cas folder in your pocket because they just work better in many situations....2nd, always carry a blade on your left hip, it wont fall off your belt when you hit the head. Joker makes great fixed blades.

I always carry the buck knife 110 in my back pocket and most the time I carry a fixed blade on my hip. Mostly my buck 119 or my Damascus Bull Horn Hunting Knife.
