2:12 That can cause confusion. The Roman Empire didn't fall from all sides until Rome fell. It lost the Western part (and even regained a lot for some time) and the remained a strong empire surviving for almost a millennium.
The Byzantines were technically still part of the Roman empire and they collapsed in 1453 with the fall of Constantinople. The Romans have been around forever.... Pretty impressive actually.
You forgot elected boarders like the current boarder between Denmark and Germany. The people living in the boarder area were asked if they felt Danish or German. And then the boarder was made following the people's answers.
You're welcome. After a series of wars, and boarder changes, the nations just decided to let the people choose between the two. As a dane thus is just basic history education.
The german state "Saarland" was french territory after ww2 as far as I know and then got added to germany again in 1957 trough a vote, because the majority was german.
Fun side note, this is the first video I've done in which I did NOT write the script. I have never said "O.G" before. Anyway hope you enjoy this animation made by our favorite Dutchman VINCENT! Check out his other animations at mode-7.com
Amazing collaboration ! I am following Geography now for some reasonable time now, I never expected the video to be in this innovative way ! Looking for more videos like this in future !
katten elvis coming from a small country that is Croatia, we get really proud when our coutry is mentioned in something that is not mainly filmed for the sole purpose of talking about our state. So, i belive he watched the video about croatia several times, and showed it to everyone around him
I'm pretty sure it's called the Netherlands because it's simply the delta region of a couple rivers. Aka it's the lowest region in Northern Europe. Not necessarily because it's below sea level. A lot of Northern Germany is also "Netherlands" in that way, which is actually reflected in names like "Niedersachsen" = "Lower Saxony" and the German spoken in those regions being "Low German".
Was happy to see Kaliningrad, my hometown, up until it was shown as a decaying dump. It's not that bad, you are welcome to see for yourself during the World Cup next year :)
But it was much more beautiful before the World War 2 and had no soviet style buildings in the city center. but I agree that factory in animation was exaggeration.
Kosta M. right now since we got funding for the World Cup, some buildings are renovated and actually look very nice. But yeah, it's a shame a lot of beautiful places, especially the King's castle, were bombed to nothing
I live like 2 kilometers from there in canada, and visit it fairly regularly for the nice parks and trails and cheap gas (vs vancouver). Visiting there is a strange experience of feeling far away from the city, yet being very close. It's a unique spot. Still (somehow) very rural though.
It does feel distinctly american though. Lots of weird little trivia about how the only school on the island is K-4, older grade students have to bus to blaine (via canada) for school, and how their services are shared with canada except the providers are referred to by different names (telephone for example) so that it doesn't break the rule requiring american residents to have american services. They do have a volunteer fire dept of their own.
You forgot about post-glacial rebound. Finland gets over 1 square kilometer of land every year because the land is rising. May not sound like much but it adds up overtime.
This was awesome! the animation couple with your explanations was super informative and easy to follow, would love to see more videos like this every so often :)
What a fantastic video. The art-style is so terrifically charming. The calm jazz for the background music was a very appropriate choice. And the script was very informative with a little comedy scattered about.
Deadass I immediately stopped what I was doing (reading a fanfic lol) as soon as I got the notification because this channel is my favorite and I watch every single video
Wow. This was a great and interesting video, Barby. The amount of work you put into these things is always staggering and I've got to give props to your editor. Great job, guys! :D
@@florisk.ios.6416 to me, it isn't rare to see a verified channel with not a lot of likes, once I replied to Just Some Guy Without A Moustache (if I recall correctly) and he had just over 10 likes.
You should do more of these "theoretical geography" videos, they are really well made. Even though I already knew everything you explained I found it really interesting and well made!
Key word: ideal. While I definitely appreciate the sentiment and support the dream, I believe our species as a whole currently isn't ready for unification. We'll probably get there eventually, but I suspect most--maybe even all--of the people posting here today will be dead long before it happens.
Missed the chance to call it Geography How?
Liked and commented so Barby can see this
Hahahah nice!

aantony2001 I was easier to keep growth in a circle. Else it would have been mess.
That's right, the Byzantine Empire
The Byzantines were technically still part of the Roman empire and they collapsed in 1453 with the fall of Constantinople. The Romans have been around forever.... Pretty impressive actually.
That some advanced animations. The low poly style is nice and consistent and is perfect for educational visualization. Good job, Vincent!
Thank you :)
Robert The Wise so true
+Vincent Kierkels Duuude your animation was awesome. Which software did you use to create it? Blender? Maya? Poser?
You forgot elected boarders like the current boarder between Denmark and Germany. The people living in the boarder area were asked if they felt Danish or German. And then the boarder was made following the people's answers.
Thank you, I always wondered why the German-Danish border moved North after WW1. Now I know.
You're welcome. After a series of wars, and boarder changes, the nations just decided to let the people choose between the two. As a dane thus is just basic history education.
isn't it the same as with the crimea?
Possibly. I just know the Denmark-Germany example. Don't really know much about the whole Crimea thing.
The german state "Saarland" was french territory after ww2 as far as I know and then got added to germany again in 1957 trough a vote, because the majority was german.
I like making weird boarders.
You sure do
Joseph Stalin yes we know stalin... we know
Most of them are ok, but those between Azerbaijan and Armenia are really NOT ok.
Kosta M.
I tried my worst :)
Don't forget Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgzystan which was my Magnum Opus
And a wise decision to honor the Great comrade Kalinin, dear comrade Stalin.
This is better than my geography teacher will ever be. He's got a PhD.
TBF this is the easiest method to explain the theme of borders for anyone new to the subject.
This is future of education.
theoddllama the information used for this video probably came from someone with a PhD
Well, it's better to have two kinds of education or learning rather than one kind.
Mostly because the PhD means he knows a lot about geography, not about teaching. That's a whole different study

The animation style sweet af
0:55 Yeah that happened on the border between Serbia and Croatia. We all know what happened next
Liberland!
@Kristijan Car it won't change that much at maximum it won't exceed 2 km2 but it will grant river access to Serbia and avoid tentions
Kyrgystan: Huh?
Tajikistan: What?
Uzbekistan: How?
Thanks Barby and Vincent, this video was awsome!
Yaaaay. He mentioned Croatia!!!
He made an entire video on Croatia you know

I've seen countless Vox and TED Ed video animations, but this one right here takes the cake.
This video was amazing.
lower than sea level?? wow!
Is that the reason why the netherlands have this name???
btw i love those animations, congratulations!
England has a tiny bit of its land under sea level,so does some countries surrounded by the Caspian sea
Yes your correct I'm Dutch our name is our land we are the low lands
I'm pretty sure it's called the Netherlands because it's simply the delta region of a couple rivers. Aka it's the lowest region in Northern Europe. Not necessarily because it's below sea level. Was happy to see Kaliningrad, my hometown, up until it was shown as a decaying dump. It's not that bad, you are welcome to see for yourself during the World Cup next year :)
Kaliningrad is quite nice, although it would be even better if more historic buildings were preserved and renovated.
Nugzar Mikeladze yeah, I didn't say it's more beautiful than it was before of course. Was comparing to the portrayal here
True, Kaliningrad due to it's unique location and status has a lot of potential.
The animation in this video was SUPERB! Looking forward to more videos like this.
Have you ever wanted to visit point roberts washington? its a small piece of land thats american but acts like its canadian
doesn't make much of a difference then

love the animation! that little camel and his derpy walk at 0:38 though had me smiling

I like the calming background music in this one. Your most relaxing video yet.
That was really well done. Thanks Vincent! :)
This is one of the most relaxed and pleasant videos you ever made, the music matches perfectly. Please take my upvote

1:45 lol that's the flag of my city: Tilburg! in The Netherlands xD

I live in a 'polder' lol
The animation is fantastic, I've seen nothing like it before.

Thanks Barbs and Vince!
I was literally asking myself this two nights ago
LIterally? So you actually sat there by yourself and asked this question out loud to yourself during the night two days ago?
flaskis Your pedantry isn't clever, it's annoying.
This was beautifully made ❤️ Thank you Barby, Vincent and everyone at Geography Now!!!
What if Russia is an enclave of kaliningrad?
Lmao
i liked this video. glad to see you expanding out from just doing videos about particular countries.
Great video but 4:40 Poland was never part of the Soviet Union
Yes it was...
RandomSpongiform A Soviet satellite state, not proper
Ok, if we're splitting hairs, technically yeah but still no "real" autonomy just like Czechoslovakia
RandomSpongiform Hence "satellite"...
Still, what's the real difference?
Very nice! I like the gaphicstyle and animations. :D
Also interesting topic!
God created the world and the dutch created Holland
And Flevoland as well :$
I'd love more of these kinds of videos!

*great, great wall on our southern border*
Build that wall for me, build that wall for me
*I'll take all the best rocks from a site to build a wall, dip it in gold and make Mexico pay for it all!* ERB ftw
this art style is very satisfying
I am from Croatia! :-)
dude I love all of your videos I can watch them forever and never get tired of them
You truly don't disappoint with every new video thanks!!

This animation Is wonderful.
6:00 I agree Sincerely Eccentric
I'm just gonna say - Kosovo is Serbia.
It is Serbian territory.
МиљковићSRB it declared independence and is officially not in serbia
Kosovo je srce Albanije srce Albanije Kosovo je srce Albanije
Zašto se vi Srbi uvijek prvi javljate?
МиљковићSRB wrong
Great video. The animation was superb.
In an ideal world there would be no borders
Adib Not really
Ah yes, borders are bad and shouldn't exist. Just look how good it is to remove them at certain points, like in Iraq, Rwanda, Yugoslavia or Libya.
Umm, no
Key word: ideal. While I definitely appreciate the sentiment and support the dream, I believe our species as a whole currently isn't ready for unification. We'll probably get there eventually, but I suspect most--maybe even all--of the people posting here today will be dead long before it happens.
IMHO, 2 millenias is the minimum before that happens.
If only all RUclips videos had the budget and time to be animated this nicely! Great work :)
