Respect to Iran for pointing out their right name to the world. I feel like countries and their people should have a say in what they want the world to call them. Not by some past-timer foreigners.
One other important reason is that persia refers to just one group of our people living in the southern region of the country while we have hundreds of different ethnicities who are not pars or persian, but are in fact iranian
Plenty of countries call other countries by different names. Greeks call Greece "Hellas", Germans call Germany "Deutschland", Finns call Finland "Suomi", it's not uncommon for foreigners to refer to a country by a different name. It's their language so they ultimately decide what they'll call other places

Because Bahrain was excluded, I will include it in the comment section. Roman emissaries visited Sri Lanka during the reign of Emperor Claudius. They gave a large amount of glass beads to the Sri Lankan king at the time, King Bhathikabeye, who then donated it to the temple of Ruwanwali Maha Saaye, the largest and most important Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. I'm a student of history from Sri Lanka, and this is the only instance I know of Sri Lankans interacting with the Romans.
I don't know about Sri Lankan history but Romans traded extensively with the southern Indian kingdoms, there was a temple of Emperor Augustus somewhere in South India, ambassadors from both sides regularly visited each other and these relations went on for more than three centuries, in light of this we can say that they must have known about Sri Lanka.

You forgot East Timor! The named drived from the word Timor which is the name of the island it sits on, when translated, Timor means east, so calling east Timor actually calling it "East of the East" the name of the island itself is referred from the location which is the most Eastern island on the greater Sunda Archipelago. China and Korea's name are understandable and are named after one of their dynasties, foreigners actually made an effort to call them the way they want to be called since the name China might have derived from the Qing and Qin dynasties, while Korea's was the name of their first unified Kingdom (Goryeo) and arguably their most powerful ancient kingdom during the era of the 3 kingdoms (Goguryeo), the problem is, foreigners don't know when this kingdoms they used to know change their name since communication between countries used to be hectic as fuck and takes 2+ years, this is like when Goryeo changed its name to Joseon etc, so the foreigners stick with the names they already know when refering to the place in a map, so the name eventually stuck, as for Japan a more likely origin of the name is that Nippon was mispronounced by people, since Japan and Nippon sound very similar.

When pronouncing Sanskrit words, you don’t need to pronounce the last letter “a”. That is there just so you extend the pronunciation of last sound before the “a”. For example, “CĪNA” or चीन is pronounced “CHEEN” with extended intonation at “N” and skipping the letter “A” altogether. This is true for all Sanskrit words written in English/Latin alphabet. Another word was “DEŚA” or देश which is pronounced like “THEY-SH”.

The word Taiwan did come from indigenous Taiwanese. However it had several names in history: Yizhou夷洲(baren island), Liuqiu流求(considered a part of Ryukyu islands), Dongning東寧(peace in the east). Dongning and Taiwan are the two names of the island when it serves as a province of China (Ming, Qing and ROC).
The name "Taiwan" comes from the ancient place name Danyuan in southern Taiwan. The location of this name is the area near the Anping area of Tainan today [19]. The origin of the name is said to be that the Han people called the terrain of the large bay in the inland sea of the Taijiang River "Tāi-uân". Due to different local dialects, it was officially written as "Tāi-uân" or "Dayuan" due to different local dialects. "Tāi-uán", "Tai-uân", etc. Another theory is that it is a transliteration of the local aboriginal Siraya tribe, which means "meeting place" or "coastal land" [20], or it is said to be derived from the self-proclaimed name of the Dawulong tribe [21]. The Dutch called Taiwan by this name when they came to Taiwan, and pronounced it as Teyoan, Taioan, Teyouvan, Tayouan, Taiyouan, and Taiyouhan[22]. Finally, it was named "Taiwan (Tâi-uân)" during the Qing Dynasty until now.

You are absolutely correct regarding India. Originally it is called as Bhārat, and recognised by the constitution. Before there is any country that was even identified, India was called as "Bharata varsha" after the king Bharata, who conquered all six parts of the world and fought with his brother to conquer the last remaining city of the world. In ancient times, it was called as "Jambu dweepa". The term "India" is put by the British which has no meaning or even not identified in sastras.

It was basically a part of undivided Bengal till partition after which it, majorly being inhabited by Bengali Muslims, decided to join Pakistan before gaining independence as separate nation. 3. It is usually shortened to 한국(hanguk - korean country). The south Koreans refer to north korea as 북한 (buk-han or literally "the Northern Han") North Koreans on the other hand prefer to use the pre-Imperial name of 조선 (Joseon or sometimes seen as Chosun) for their country. This was the name of the kingdom between 1392 and 1897. North Koreans refer to South Korea as 남조선 (nam-joseon = South Joseon)

I’d assume a lot of Americans don’t know much about the Middle East outside Saudi Arabia/Egypt(maybe Israel too if we’re being generous) either, I sure didn’t see any of the others when I was younger
people like to correct Americans by saying what they usually refer to Asia is actually East and/or Southeast Asia but imho the whole idea of Asia was made up to contrast with Europe so it doesn't really matter
They didn't highlight it for either nation because of the disputed status it has globally which I find absurd since they cut a part of Ladakh (specifically Aksai Chin) and displayed it as a part of China. They only highlighted Jammu and Kashmir after both India and Pakistan were discussed. But yeah the map is distorted.
Okay so as an Arab I have to point out the following: Some of the names you mentioned have perfectly understandable Arabi meanings without having to look for origins. Like Qatar for example You thought it was those old mapping guys and the names evolved from there, but it's definitely the opposite. They knew them by those names because that's what the Arabs already called them. And the distortion of course comes because they're translating the names to their tongue. This btw confirms the idea I had from the start of the video that in a lot of cases (not all) you find the original western name and work from their, which is misleading to say the least.
That is a good point and an important correction. In GK's defence I think he is tracking the origin of the modern international name (let's face it, that means current English language name, basically). Anyway, it would be less interesting if he only said "Qatar means xxxx in Arabic", but I agree he should have added that, in addition to the history of the modern "international" name.
@@tonynunes4965 it's important to note that Names are different in languages, each language uses a name for a specific country and that name drives from different place, here we are using English so we are talking about the names of these nations in english, like Germany, in English it's called germany but in Arabic it's called "Almania" both names come from different places, Soo Qatar in English comes from different place than Arabic, And each language gets the name from different place. So it's not important to use what it means in Arabic because the english didn't take the name from Arabic it took it from different language So the origin of that name in English will be different than the Origin of the name in Another language!
I think if you did a video of from where country's names in Arabic originated, you wouldn't necessarily explain it as "this is how the natives say it" and leave it at that. The video would be very short and very incomplete. The point of this video is how the ENGLISH names of these countries came to be.

17:42: It's worth noting that _Georgia_ is country's exonym (external name) the Western world adopted and later became its international name. The endonym (native name) is _Sakartvelo (საქართველო)_ which literally means _the land of the Kartvels, the place of the Kartvels,_ or simply _of the Kartvels._ Kartvels (ქართველები) are the native ethnic group of Georgia. The word _Kartvel_ comes from the core region of Georgia called _Kartli_ which gets its name from the medieval kingdom of the same name - Kingdom of Kartli - the most direct predecessor of Kingdom of Georgia (also referred as _Georgian Empire_ in some sources); although the ancient polity (and later a kingdom) of Colchis also played a major role in its formation as both kingdoms spoke related languages (known as Kartvelian languages), and shared lots of cultural heritage. The Kingdom of Kartli was called _Iberia_ in the Greco-Roman geography while Colchis is a Greco-Roman name itself that was later adopted by Georgian historians too; the ancient native name of Colchis was _Egrisi,_ and its origins are unknown. As for the origin of the name _Kartli,_ it't highly debated, but the most widely-accepted hypothesis is that it came from the Iranian word _"kart",_ meaning _"a land that is surrounded",_ referring to the mountainous nature of the region that served as a natural fortification which made the region hard to invade. P.S.: I'm Georgian but the sources I've read are all in English, so feel free to do your own research.
Thank you for pointing this out. Several months after visiting Tbilisi last year, I have been calling the country _Sakartvello_. This is out of respect for the country, but also because I'm tired of people confusing it with the American state called Georgia. I hope we can get more and more people to call it _Sakartvelo_.

In Southern Chinese dialects, Japan has been called: Yapon. When the Europeans first came to China, initially the Portuguese and Spaniards, they arrived in the South and adopted the pronunciation. Obviously, in many Romance languages, "J" has been pronounced as "Y". So, they spelled Yapon as Japon/Japan. Then, the British came and mixed up the pronunciation, mistakenly converting the Y-sounded J to dz-sounded J, just like "Yesus" to "Jesus", "Yerusalem" to "Jerusalem". So, after the British became the strongest colonial power, the dz-sounded J stayed and Yapon had since then been pronounced as Japan (with the dz-sounded "J").
Yes. You are accurate. The India given by British came from Indus river. Interestingly, we indians locally call it Sindu River. So, S in Sindu become H in Hindu. And now they call it Indus. What a distortion.

Original name of India is BHARATHA , a Sanskrit word which means Bhava, Raga and Tala. Bharata means a land which showered from primordial sound shabda BrahmAn ie OM. "STAN" is a Sanskrit word which means place with a boundaries. Pakistan, Tazakistan, Azbekistan all these Stan ended nations rooted in Sanskrit.
I believe Nepal's name comes from a Tibeto-Burman language, Newari to be precise. "Pa" is a suffix meaning people(correct me if I'm wrong) used in Tibeto-Burman languages, Bod(Tibet)->Bodpa, Druk(Bhutan)->Drukpa, Dolpo->Dolpopa and so on. Places ending with a vowel in traditional Newari homeland like the Kathmandu valley usually get an 'l' at the end over time, "Chabahi:" becomes "Chabahil" , "Janabaha:" becomes "Janabahal". Nepali borrows many words from Newari, words like "pasa:" in Newari becomes "pasal" in Nepali. Newars also refer to their language as "Nepal bhasa" meaning Nepal language. Before being known as Nepal, the kingdom used to be referred to as Gorkha, and before that the country was divided into numerous smaller states which had no single long-lasting name in particular.
But when during my primary school we used to read the the name is come from Newari word and Ne and Pa and later changed to Nepal also another is "Ne" means wool and "Pal" means house in Nepali since in ancient times the Nepal used to rear large no of sheep.
18:41 actually a better explanation would be that it comes from the Greek word "Sirios", which is what they called the Arameans, the main people that have inhabited that land, unlike the Assyrians.
There is actually many theories. But the one he spoke about is because of the big presence of Persians in that area at the time of Arab-Persian wars (in the 18th century I think). However some people argue that its real name is Eeman not Ojman.
Brunei old name can be divided into 2 theory. No1 baru nah which means tanah baru or new land. No2 baru ni which means something new. So it makes sense that awang alak betatar is kadayan thats why he used the words nei at the end because mostly kadayan people using nei not ni. Baru nei or brunei still sounds the same. Btw do not believe what foreigners saying about brunei. What varun? Varuna? Come on lah thats very nonesense. They even using different picture. Awang alak betatar he is malays. He wear dastar not sarban. And he dont dress like persian people. He wear almost same cloths just like what malays and javanese wearing that time
@@vuquangminh6482 That's true but... In this case, it kind of makes sense given that India (the region) was home to an eminent civilisation so it was perfectly reasonable for them to call it the "Sea of the Indians", given that most likely where they were going to if they navigate in those waters. It's after that this thing got out of hand. I still wish they gave it a distinctive name, though 😕 like the Atlantic for example. Nowadays, you could be like "Indian, huh ?" Thats kind of sad for me as because i am one of them who want Bharat to have 1 common name used worldwide , i just hope it happen someday 😊
@LoL Noob account india was given by greek and persians which has almost lost the route , whereas Bharat was the name used from thousands and thousands of years . Asia, the largest continent in the world. Saudi Arabia, Israel, Turkey, Iran, Armenia, are in Asia. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, are in Asia. A number of people think that only East Asians, like Japan, China, and Korea, are the only Asians, but that is wrong, Asia has so much variety, and are all Asians.
That's true. Also big part of Russia is also Asia. And both transcaucasion three countries. But the most big continent is Europe Asia. With Russia and Georgia there and with connecting with Europe and Asia.
It is true that Bharat is a native name from India. But it is not the name of a religious figure. it is a name of a great king named King Bharat ( pronounced Bha-raat). He was son of King Dushyanta and was very brave.
Emperor Bharata is a Legendary character and there's no historical support to it. Modern historians think that the name derives from a Vedic tribe, the Bharata Tribe, who claims descent from King Bharata.
@@jojosekhose2008 A lot of places are named after legendary characters. Greece- its native name, Hellas- is named after a legendary character. Athens- the Goddess Athena. A legendary Goddess.

Roman emissaries visited Sri Lanka during the reign of Emperor Claudius.

I think it's important to say that Georgia is the "international" name, because native georgians call their country "Sakartvelo" (საქართველო in their alphabet) that would mean "where the kartveli are from" (sa- being a sufix meaning where) and kartveli, how they call themselves, apparently comes from one of the first villages of the country. :)

It is usually shortened to 한국(hanguk - korean country). The south Koreans refer to north korea as 북한 (buk-han or literally "the Northern Han")
North Koreans on the other hand prefer to use the pre-Imperial name of 조선 (Joseon or sometimes seen as Chosun) for their country. This was the name of the kingdom between 1392 and 1897. North Koreans refer to South Korea as 남조선 (nam-joseon = South Joseon)

@@veeeeeeee9908 True. Aksai Chin should also not be highlighted if he is considering disputed territories not to put in any nation
You are correct but they do this because that state or land is disputed between 2 countries. Just to be safe and neutral.
Okay so as an Arab I have to point out the following:
Some of the names you mentioned have perfectly understandable Arabi meanings without having to look for origins.
Like Qatar for example
You thought it was those old mapping guys and the names evolved from there, but it's definitely the opposite.
@@tonynunes4965
it's important to note that Names are different in languages, each language uses a name for a specific country and that name drives from different place, here we are using English so we are talking about the names of these nations in english, like Germany, in English it's called germany but in Arabic it's called "Almania" both names come from different places, Soo Qatar in English comes from different place than Arabic, And each language gets the name from different place.
The point of this video is how the ENGLISH names of these countries came to be.
the guy just says where the present used names derive from, not exactly the authentic name's origin.

It should be Tibet, because they were there first before the Indians came across the border
4:50 the name China has nothing to do with Qing dynasty. It comes from Qin dynasty which started roughly 2000 years earlier than Qing dynasty.
18:41 actually a better explanation would be that it comes from the Greek word "Sirios", which is what they called the Arameans, the main people that have inhabited that land, unlike the Assyrians.
21:37 So one of the United Arab Emirates, is literally called Non-Arab.
Ironic.
There is actually many theories.
But the one he spoke about is because of the big presence of Persians in that area at the time of Arab-Persian wars (in the 18th century I think).
However some people argue that its real name is Eeman not Ojman.
As a Bruneian, you are correct about the background but god damn why is foreigners calling my country Brun-eye? I mean I can understand but feels bad.
He wear almost same cloths just like what malays and javanese wearing that time
Funfact: the indian ocean is named after a region which is named after a river!
Haha
Wow 🇮🇳
wow. West people back in those day dont have alot of creativity for name
@@vuquangminh6482
That's true but...
Nowadays, you could be like "Indian, huh ?"
So, you mean...
1. from the modern 🇮🇳 South Asian republic
2. the Sub-Himalayan region where it is located
3. the ocean that borders those two.
Or maybe, you know, *THE PEOPLES THAT DON'T EVEN LIVE IN THE SAME HEMISPHERE AS THEM* ---> 🌎 (mostly in English, though)
It's ... bananas.
@@quidam_surprise yea and also Indian live in America.
Indonesia. Indochina.....
They are to lazy to chose a name
13:14 Yes you are right there were other names like Hindustan and Aryavratta (not that stupid so called aryan invasion theorie one 'Aryan' ) but most popular and commonly used here is India or Bharat . Just last year few people asked the government to rename it Bharat with 1 common name but the supreme court refused the petition saying that Article 1 of Indian constitution already refers 'India that is Bharat' .
Thats kind of sad for me as because i am one of them who want Bharat to have 1 common name used worldwide , i just hope it happen someday 😊
It should only be Bharat 🤝
@LoL Noob account india was given by greek and persians which has almost lost the route , whereas Bharat was the name used from thousands and thousands of years . If you are from India you would defiantly know the line 'Bharat Mata ki Jay' (Hail to mother Bharat) we dont say it India mata ki jai. so theres a difference . and india is now an independent country so our country , our name why should a foreigner interfere here ?. hope you got it 😃
@LoL Noob account similarly, that's why you choose this name "LoL Noob" rather than name given by your parent
🤏🤏🧠 your level is 0.1
@LoL Noob account you are really a noob. This is your fake troll account and you're a bot 🤣
Bangladesh came from Sanskrit words
Bānglā बंगला (Bengali Language)
and Desà देश (A country/Empire/Area)
So it's Bānglā + Desà = Bangladesh
Bang Ladesh
Interesting ....in indonesia desa means village... 😁
@@jatin2866 Bangladesh*
@@mulkanmulkan5620 it's Desh. Not desa

Also, sometimes we find that those legendary characters are real. They found out that Troy from the Illiad is real! But I'd be proud to have my country named after a legendary hero from the Mahabharata, one of the greatest stories ever told!
