I'm so happy you made this talk, David. Absolutely love The Golden Age and it is definitely one of my top five Shostakovich works. The Serebrier recording is amazing!
The Bolshoi Grigorovich performance is absolutely splendid. I don't know how dancers do that. I don't know how Shostakovich wrote it. Bolshoi orchestra is great. You simply must check this out on youtube. It's spellbinding and unforgettable. And so much fun!
I had the pleasure of seeing the Bolshoi Ballet movie of this amazing show about 3 years ago. While I had a mighty good chuckle with your great comments about ballet's inability to communicate a story I did get my mind totally blown with the music. I play mandolin and do lots of little gigs around town and include Shosti's Waltz #2 in my playlist. I would love to add some more but I'm at a loss for might be useful in my context. I would love any suggestions you might have. Billy
The Golden Age is a geat piece. Another segment that's a lot of fun is the jazzy Foxtrot, in which the flexatone is audible near the beginning of the piece.
My kid loves this music, and has since he was 1! In fact, this video moves me to request a music chat for young children. It does seem that toddlers have some patterns to their musical preferences, but I think it's not quite what you usually find on the "music for kids" collections. For example, could a record exec suggest a CD for toddlers that includes excerpts from The Golden Age and Elektra and keep his/her job? But kids love that stuff more than The Swan, etc (based on an admittedly small sample). As someone who can explode a popular myth when necessary, I thought you'd have some good recommendations.
This is an absolutely amazing couple hours of music. Rozhdestvensky and Serebrier are both outstanding and both available on Qobuz. I probably give the slight edge to the latter for more punch and attention-grabbing moments. There’s at least one other recording of the full ballet available to stream, Yuri Simonov with the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra on the Russian Musical Society Label. Haven’t heard that one yet so can’t vouch for it.
Loved your video! I really thought the orchestration of the whole ballet included a harmonium. I saw it in a performance of the suite on Berlin Philharmonic's Digital Concert Hall.
Boosey and Hawkes hawks them on their website. But the prices may cause fainting spells. The complete Golden Age is actually in two volumes 60a and 60b and will set you back around $500.
Amazing the range Shostakovich had...and yet...even at an earlier age- it's still unmistakably him. Wonderful.

I have never clicked a notification faster!
I love this piece
Perfect music for a grey Sunday. Thanks.
I can’t wait. I’ve never heard the complete ballet.
Even better, there is actual full ballet from Bolshoi on You Tube
I wish more video reviews included interpretive dance like this one.
Your impersonation of another water-colourist at 3.10 had me in stitches.

That's a great suggestion. I'll think about it.
Nice idea. My kid likes Stravinsky's Pulcinella, the complete version.

Glad you enjoyed it!
David. Have you reviewed recordings of Prokofievs Romeo and Juliet?? I couldn’t find it. Its the ballet that actually moves me the most
Yes, I do recall the discussion.
There's a Prokofiev playlist on my channel home page. Have a look.
Found it thanks. I have never seen this ballet in the theater without leaving emotionally shattered.
I love this ballet. Where did you get the score, Dave? It's a riot!!
I don't remember exactly.
Would you be able to provide a link for a source for those Shostakovich scores? Would be interesting.
No, I can't. You can find them easily enough at any reputable sheet music dealer online.

Your voice sounded a bit like you're coming down with something? If so, all the best and stay healthy
Thank you. Actually just the opposite--been sick for a couple of weeks but getting better.
Yeah I saw this weird ballet with amazing music and then I found out that it is about some soccer team and nacist. Quite a surprise
