The Non-Canon Expert examines the relationship between Darth Vader and Admiral Kendal Ozzel before The Empire Strikes Back and looks at how their work together through Death Squadron and the Super Star Destroyer the Executor resulted in Darth Vader hating Admiral Ozzel long before the events of Episode 5.
This is a Legends story for Admiral Ozzel and Darth Vader with information from numerous Legends sources, including "The Essential Guide to Warfare" and the Legends comic "Star Wars: Rebellion" issue #5. I hope that you enjoy it!

“You have failed me for the last time, Admiral.”
and we read this in "Vader's" voice... LOL
I heard Lucas said the actor who played Ozzel gave the best death scene he ever saw.
“Captain Piett.”
@@Reliavl "Yes my Lord"
@@RatedShadowXrd “Make ready to land our troops beyond their energy field. And deploy the fleet, and make sure that nothing gets off the system. You are in command now *Admiral* Piett”
Vader is a Dark Lord of the Sith, an experienced and seasoned combat officer from the Clone Wars, has essentially no tolerance for anything less than mastery of strategy and execution, and is a walking, breathing (barely) example of a seething powder keg of anger and pain.
I am surprised Ozzel lived as long as he did.
Well said
Because Ozzel wasn't careful enough not to choke on his aspirations.
*cricket cricket*
Excellent
Oh get out. 😂
All too easy
"You are in command now Admiral Piett" the last words Ozzel would hear.
I'll give Piett this, he did a better job when it comes to commanding Death Squadron.
@@gamepad3173 way better than Ozzel did
If Ozzel talked down to Vader all the time the way he did in Empire Strikes Back, I don't blame Vader for hating him.
I would have probably launched him out of the nearest airlock aboard the executor
Right?? His smug "so many uncharted settlements" line was more than enough sass to a superior officer to get him reprimanded or even demoted in a real navy, and considering said superior officer is a literal Evil Space Wizard who routinely gets away with outright murdering his subordinates, the fact that Ozzel wasn't immediately decapitated then and there means he got off lightly.
Frankly, Vaders showed an astonishing amount of restraint in respect to Ozzel. And yet, Ozzel continued pushing his luck.
That’s why you shouldn’t push it
Ozzel took this restraint as a sign of being Vader's equal. A huge mistake
Like vader said you have failed me for the last time admiral.
Idk, I’m pretty sure I’m Vader’s equal, if not his superior. Ozzel made an honest mistake, one anyone could make
wow
I feel like Vader hated about 95% of imperial officers
@Johnathon Davis kinda IRONIC how most imperials liked the empire because it wasnt as corrupt as the republic while most of them only got their positions by corruption and family
@@cc0767 open corruption versus concealed corruption.
I think Vader mostly hated himself.
@Johnathon Davis Piett, Veers, Tarkin, and Thrawn were the exceptions rather than the rule as far as Imperial Officers go and hence Vader liked or at the very least valued their opinions and thus no harm came to them, by his hands anyway.
It was because there is nothing Imperial about them...more like impotent and incompetent!
Ozzel's first mistake was seeing Vader as his equal. No one is Vader's equal and that's what got him killed.
But there is 1 man *above* him..Sheev Palpatine
Except for Grand Moff Tarkin.
@@jimhuffman9434 1 above him, but no one is his equal.
@@MrRed-tf7bv no Vader is above him it's just that Palpatine told Vader not to kill him cuz he's very important to the Empire
Sand is Vader's equal
Ozzel's arrogance and incompetence are what ultimately sealed his fate and doomed him to Vader's wrath.
Vader: Hey, Ozzel. You have a little something around your neck, allow me to get it for you
It wasn't just that. Vader was annoyed by the fact that Ozzle never refilled the coffee pot in the break room when it was low, he once kept Vader waiting outside the executive rest room for almost two hours, only to reveal that his business backed up the toilet, and the Admiral would always hog all the complimentary beverages in the mini-fridge, leaving only Club soda. Vader hates Club soda!
Vader hates Club Soda? He's truly a villain, Club soda is great!
And he always leaves the microwave in a mess after he uses it at lunch.
@@rosesske2551 Ozzel was also a rebel spy who tampered with Lord Vader’s suit controls to make him sound like a chipmunk on crack
This needs more likes 😂
Why does it feel like your printing personal issues on here
Edit: not that that is a problem
He hated Ozzel because his name wasn't Maximilian Veers. Once you meet a man with a name THAT awesome! It's hard to like anyone else with any name that sounds inferior.
Yes, only someone with name Whatabout Droidattack OntheWookies can match him.
What about Maximilian Steinhauser
You are all traitors!
Only "The Senate" is the ultimate power in the universe!
@@thatoneradicalizedprussian225 None of us are saying that The Senate is an inferior name to Maximilian. The name has Unlimited Power, it's why he kept this name concealed from Darth Vader, and killed all the Jedi who heard it before his new apprentice could arrive.
Who would win?
A military organization that has lasted for thousands of years, made of the galaxy's best warriors who can see into the future and read people's minds
*or*
The Senate
I had no idea that Thrawn was involved in the battle of Hoth in Legends.
I didn't either.
@@EchthelionII Not directly, but I think he for example narrowed it down after discovering what kind of material the rebels did bring together, things which suggest they were hiding on a planet with very extreme climate. That helped Vader to scan interesting worlds with droids.
@@marcbartuschka6372 That makes a lot of sense, Thrawn would be the only one to think of that, and from (possible) past experiences Vader would listen to him.
Me neither🤓
Neither did I
I wonder how many families had death warrants on Darth Vader's Head? I mean a lot of these officers killed by Vader. Generally were from corrupt families that bought their status in the military. Now that would be an interesting story.
I feel that every story would end with
" And than they died too"....
Qardo Vader would just kill the bounty hunter and trace back to whoever hired him and make an Italian Mafia piss their boots full at the carnage left. I doubt Vader would even spare the family dog!
I wonder how many death warrants Vader had on prominent imperial families, _and how many he served himself,_ lolz.
Some men would see a bounty on their head as a death sentence, some would see it as an inconvenience, Vader sees it as sports.
I feel like putting a warrant on Vader's head is a boomerang that's going to come back and bite them.
In the book “Alliance” Mara Jade warned Vader to keep an eye on Ozzel
Even L.B that would be a cool video to see. Wish this channel did it
LOVE that book. It made Ozzel look even worse if that’s possible. I mean he did try to kill Vader’s daughter-in-law(legends).
I always thought Ozzel was a Rebel sympathizer. He tries talking Vader out of going to Hoth and then he jumps out of light speed too close to the planet giving the Rebels a warning.
because he was a politician and not a real commander. he only got the job through nepotism.
I remember Star Wars' Episode 5. Now I know why Vader hated Ozzel before that episode. Because he failed him way before that he did again for the last time by then.
The lesson to be learned here is do NOT be incompetent when Darth Vader is around
Wow. Three years worth of continuously pissing off Vader.
I'm surprised he kept his cool for so long around that bloated blowhard.
Honestly, I'm surprised he lasted this long-Some Imperial bridge officer 3 ABY
The one dislike is probably Admiral Ozzel.
Firmus may have employed dirty tactics to get Ozzel, but in this case the end justified the means, Firmus was a competent officer with a humble upbringing who was in the Navy for legit reasons, and not for political gain, truly a diamond among the Imperial snobs
Choose a bonus for this battle.
Figurehead bonus: Blame any space battle defeat on Ozzel coming out of lightspeed too close to the planet.
The Empire has activated the figurehead bonus.
Vader was part of picking Ozzel for Death Squadron in legends also. In a rare moment where he was being tolerant of Mara Jade, she explained she didn’t trust him and that he had tried to have her killed. Vader agreed to “watch” him.
1:58 ah so people have light speed rammed ships before... to no effect. a regular cruiser is probably of a relative size to the executor as the raddus was to the supremacy
Actor Michael Sheard as Ozzel later played Adolf Hitler in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade!
He also played Hitler in the Tomorrow People before Star Wars.
Very interesting
And Mr Bronson in Grange Hill...
@@Shelsight He was great as Mr Bronson 😊
Admiral Ozzel was a Rebel spy!!! He tried to dissuade Vader from going to Hoth, and then when that failed he pulled the Imperial Fleet out of light speed too quickly thus alerting the Rebels to their presence. He knew this would likely lead to his lead to his death. Admiral Ozzel is an unsung hero of the Rebellion!
Poor guy, crushed to death in Doctor Who, burned to a crisp in Space:1999, and choked to death in Empire.
Now that's a hat trick to be proud of!!!
Vader rather kept his composure and patience with Ozzel for too long. I would have killed him right at that scene where he argues about the Hoth rebel base. Questioning Vader's force imbued intuition is tantamount to bringing someone's own death upon himself.
Left out the part about Mara Jade discovering corruption that Ozzel was involved in (mainly involving covering up his mistakes by getting other imperials killed, including Jade herself almost) right before he became commander of death squadron (which Vader allowed largely to keep an eye on Ozzel because of aforementioned corruption).
Because Vader thought Ozzel was cruel to the kids in Grange Hill.
Captain America: I understood that reference!
@@richardched6085 And the reference to Ozzels name being "Kendal"
@@CountZero78 ha! Never realised that before... I wonder if Michael Sheard suggested that as Ozzel’s first name. Poor Danny Kendall. At least his death led to Mr Bronson changing his ways and becoming more empathetic. The kids at Grange Hill liked him by the end... Amazing conflagration of two very different but iconic series... ;)
"Because he wouldn't be stupid enough to argue or quarrel with Vader" Oops.
He was right in this video. That reason was hilarious.😂😂😂
To me, serving in the Imperial Navy is like being a member of the Nights Watch. If you want to play politics, you don't belong. They want soldiers who are loyal, not someone who kisses ass to rise up. You fight, or you die.
Makes you wonder what Ozzel's older brother was like!
I remember Fredrick the Great classified his officers four ways: Smart and industrious, smart and lazy, dumb and lazy, and dumb and industrious. Of the four the last one was the most destructive. I'm not sure but he certain falls into the dumb and industrious particularly coming out of light speed to quickly thinking he'd achieve surprise.
Its any wonder how ozzel even commanded the executor after his incompetence in the prior battle.
SWRC Star Wars fans need some detailed analysis of the Fetts, in particular whether or not they are Mandalorians, or could be. A lot of people seem to take Prime Minister Almec's statements to Kenobi in the Clone Wars show at face value. The prime minister clearly had every reason to deny that Jango was a Mandalorian, whether he was or not.
Now they are
Ozzel was set up to fail you've got to feel a little bad for him even if he was useless
Wow very cool indeed!
yeah i kind of enjoyed hearing the backstory for that admiral. i always felt like vader forced chocked officers left right and center but its clear that doing that was a bit more personal.
Admiral Ozzel was clumsy as he was stupid. His coming out of light speed too close to the planet of Hoth was Ozzel’s last mistake. Lord Vader should have executed Admiral Ozzel a long time ago.
5:57 stress level 99% lol
Good post. I love your explanation of why Vader hating ozzil.
If not for me... For Taco Tuesdays.
I'm making tacos right now lol
I just ate tacos.
I was eating some while watching the video.
Very nice :) Piett was smart Brave, confident. True soldier and man
I always thought Vader didn't like Ozzels mustache
Great Video! Is there life lessons for Star Wars that teaches us fans?
When Vader gives an order, follow that order to keep from ending up like Ozzel.
I think I have created a good imperial ship but idk if it is good or not.
It is about the length and width of a First Order star destroyer but 1 jawa shorter. Has 6 hangers 2 in the middle of a ship and the rest in the upper half of the ship. It has 202 torbo lazers and ion cannons. Also 33 anti air craft turrets. It has the standered shields and armor of a star destroyer. Also has 2 bridges one inside and the other outside unexposed. The crew a bit lower than of a First Order star destroyer and a bit over the stormtroopers of a regular star destroyer. It has 120 tie fighters,20 tie Interceptor's,and 15 tie bombers. Lastly it has 8 engins and a tractor beam.
This way the last words Vader said to Ozzel make sense to me now. Before i never really understood what he meant with "you have failed me for the last time". I always assumed that Darth Vader was so unforgiving to failure that he immediately executes people when they appear incompetent in any way......like he did to poor captain Needa.
Does anyone recall a time where Imperial Class Star Destroyers were not atmosphere capable, leaving the role to the Victory Class? I have this feeling I've read it somewhere in the earlier EU but by Force Unleashed that was no longer the case.
If Admiral Griff was killed during the rebels evacuation of Yavin IV, how the hell was he the first commander of the Executor if it was completed 6 months after the battle of Yavin (assuming the rebels evacuated shortly after the battle)?
“For talking too much.” Lol that was a nice touch.
That's so awesome, I love Piett even more! Lol Team Darkside!
I never got why Ozzel jumping too close to Hoth was bad as that alerted the rebels. However, if you jump too far from Hoth, that would also alert the Rebels, no? At least jumping too close will allow you to land troops on Hoth faster and surprise the Rebels.
I think that it is that if the Empire fleet exited far from the base, then they would have a better change to sneak in by normal space. Given the meteor activity, ships would be hard to detect as they approach. You could send a landing force that could be hidden among the meteors and land without being noticed. Coming out of hyperspace close to the rebel base meant the the large fleet stood out immediately in the chaos of Hoth space as soon as it appeared. there is no way you could land fast enough to catch them by surprise.
Ozzel is a luxury player doesn't defend enough
Actor that played Ozzel also play Hitler in raiders of the lost Ark 😳
That wasn't everything that made vater despise admiral ozzel it was also the incident where an ISB major tried to frame some Stormtroopers with ozzel in a Mara Jade novel. Mara told Vader to keep an eye on ozzel.
It's obvious to me that Ozzel was a rebel spy and Vader knew this. Ozzel always tried to lead Vader away from where the rebels were but this was his last time doing it.
Wait his first name is kendal? No way 😂 as in danny kendal in grange hill? Haha Mr bronson will be proud
Nothing to do with him having a lump of mint cake instead of a brain, then?
i thought the video was really good and hope you keep making more videos
36 months ago 😮
Seems after WATCHING LUKE AND the Rebels escape.. surprised Vader's suit didnt turn red with his anger...
It's a wonder Vader waited so long before he finally force strangled Ozzle..
My headcanon is that Ozzel was a secret Rebel spy, the way he kept screwing with the initial operations on Hoth.
Like he hated sand?
Isn't it obvious? Ozzel failed Vader repeatedly for 3 years straight. Then Vader had enough one day and force strangled him to death. As cold blooded as Vader was. He was quite forgiving most of the time (Barring Legends and some Canon sources which takes his choking officer kick into maximum overdrive).
I think this is the first video referencing material I actually read ...well, a little of. These were my Conan (Dark Horse) years. Many tales of high adventure ;D
The Vader/Ozzel thing has played out historically for ages past. In a nutshell, when a very firmly entrenched military commander who's put in his time and has victories under his belt is usurped by a younger, less experienced outsider, who systematically curtails that command authority- theres going to be some head butting. End result is a transfer, retirement, or an execution. What happens to the command itself is that those in command merely pass down commands and will always hesitate to take initiative. True in the general staff, true in the office. Beck, Halder, Guderian. Maybe not so much Caesar and Pompey
Lol anyone else see Vadar sipping a cup of tea in the thumbnail? No just me, damn it would have made you smile if your had seen it
“Bronson’s got toupee!”
You Have Failed Me For The Last Time Admiral !
Which Is The Very One Ultimate QuoteLine That I Always Love Hearing And Laughing All About Growing Up And Even Now To This Very Day And So Very Much Whenever It Comes To Watching The Iconic Star Wars Movie The Empire Strikes Back !
🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😉
If you think about it Admiral Ozzel DID make the right call in moving the fleet out of light speed so close to the Hoth System. The rebels were already beginning their evacuation when they detected the probe Droid. The delay in approaching Hoth from afar at non hyper drive speeds could well have given the rebels enough time to get away.
Ozzel was not informed that the droid was destroyed. In fact, this may be a sign that Ozzel collaborated with the Rebellion, and was desperate to give him a signal, specifically because he was not sure if the rebels caught on to the droid or not.
@user-zr1nr2xc3l Then he would have done them a disservice by approaching at lightspeed so close to the hoth system. If they approached at conventional speeds the rebels would have completely gotten away. Because of his actions they didn't.
“He felt surprise was wiser...”
Its simple, I see a star wars reading club video, I click!
Somebody should have told Admiral Ozzel what my late Mom and Papaw used to say “don’t count your chickens until the eggs hatch”!!
When did Grand Admiral Thrawn disappear as shown in star wars rebels?
A year before Rogue One
@@jhughes22891 thanks!
the EU had Thrawn be in the unknown regions hence why the rebel alliance had no idea who he was.
I like to think that Vader knew what Piett was doing, he just didn't care.
Now knowing this, I’ll sleep much better tonight.
Mom: slow down you’re gonna choke on your food
Me: I know how to EAT mom, jeeze...
Me: 7:25
He was a golden state fan?
Edit: Oh, I guess that's not why.
Ozzel looks like Kaiser Wilhelm II just with a smaller mustache.
Everyone getting on my neck now huh? Can never get a break, but I'll always be the Empires best weapon!
In your dreams, Admiral...
You’re as clumsy as you are stupid
Ozzel would have been the perfect spy established within the rebellion: wrecks terrorist vessels like Jar Jar and gives rebels brain aneurysms
Piett knew Ozzel was clumsy and stupid...he really made him look incompetent before Vader.
He kept stealing the good bantha milk from the communal refrigerator, even though it was totally labeled
You have failed me for the last time Admiral.
The problem i think is that the chain of command in the empire is not clear and Vader can come in and out as he pleases which I think contributed to the rebellion not being destroyed
You fail me admiral for last time
If Ozzel invited Vader to the weekly poker game, they might have gotten to know each other better. So maybe Ozzel might have lived longer
Loved it!
Your videos are the bro. Believe me...If not for me.............Vador keeps his word :)
The scary thing about these officers is that when they get cocky,or apologize Lord Vader Force Choks the car out of them.
In the alternative reality of the Force Unleashed, Darth Starkiller also ended up hating Ozzel as well and even killed him in the same manor, only Starkiller force choked Ozzel without the use of a view port and did so from under Echo Base.
I’m pretty sure that was captain Keena.
Interesting video
i can tell you what he's going to say toward the end and there you have it he always says that lol
Twenty people screwed up the initial battle plan, allowing the Rebels to generate a ray shield over their base.
Does anyone has the imperial handbook every officer has a good tactic and strategy and then there is ozzel. His tactic jump out of hyperspace close as possible for surprise effect then hunt him because he runs away then pull up with more ships to surround him. I am an imperial but I agree with hand comment "you can only laugh at that"
I have a request for a video & I think you are the only one who can do it. Here it is. No one has ever talked about the spaceship Count Dooku used when he left Geonosis. As soon as the ship left orbit, these weird solar sails/panels emerged from the front. As he returned to Coruscant the sails would retract back. No one has ever explained the what, where, how, & why. I find it so interesting that no information exists that I have found to describe this ship and the details George Lucas put into this distinct scene towards the end of Attack of the Clones. If you could do this, you are amazing!!!
F in the chat for Ozzel
Always wondered why none of the Grand Admirals were assigned to Death Squadron. I suspect it might have been due to them being largely outside the main channels on personal projects for the Emperor.
Its a good question but I think the reason is while Death squadron had a lot of prestige other then the Executor it was a relatively minor command less then 10 ships meant to be mobile. Not only that but even if the Grand Admirals had a good working relationship with Vader I don't think most would be willing to work under him. Vader for his part probably wouldn't like to have a subordinate that he couldn't punish for failure because all of the Grand Admirals where hand picked by the Emperor and had his ear.
I'd hazard a guess that the Grand Admirals would be commanding the entire fleet. Death Squadron would probably comprise the flagship (or one of them) and the finest crews in the fleet, making it a kind of special forces fleet commanded by Lord Vader
@@trajan231 well Vader didn't get along with most of the Grand Admirals as one was a rival in the Court, one tried to kill him, two were political appointees and another had his project blown out from under Vader's boots.
Imperial officers always undermined eachother to gain advancement. Despite Piett undermining Ozzel, it was Ozzel's incompetence that made him vulnerable to it.
If you work for Vader, you have a really lousy retirement plan.
I'd like a show totally about Thrawn and the Chiss
