  • From John Roberts' "Illustrated Dictionary of Trout Flies," the Red Arrow is a traditional Irish wet fly created by Syl Higgins. The original calls for a body of seal's fur, but any imitation or fuzzy dubbing like angora goat will work as well.
    Hook: #10-14 wet fly
    Thread: Black
    Tail: Golden pheasant tippets
Rib: Silver oval tinsel (or wire)
Body: Seal's fur (or substitute) red and black
    Hackle: Black hen

IMHO There are a lot of those "old Irish" flies...especially the Loch patterns that we should be trying.

I hear you Jim! Take a look at the book. I haven't reviewed it and wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but I think it would be right up your alley. A lot of the patterns you will have seen but there are plenty that us tiers in the states will have never heard of. You can get a used copy for just a couple dollars. amzn.to/3Jw7Ayv

Good morning Matt. ☕️time. Enjoyed the video. Hope your weekend has gone well. Snow we received from the recent storm has pretty much disappeared. We have some water that is starting to open up. Time to go 🎣 is getting closer. Take care.

Thanks John! And oh man, I was so close with getting my fist snakehead on Saturday. Three semi-hook ups, and two of them were absolute monsters. I'm talking 24+ inches, probably ten pounds or so. I just couldn't get a good hook set. I was using a Mustad C71S (circle streamer) hook, fishing some made-up experiment of a fly. Green foam body, lots of feathers, that maybe looked like a frog. But I'm going to get one next time. And oh man, that's going to be a nice video. :-)

I use angora goat material, easy to dub,and definently gives you the buggy look. Thanks Matt, enjoyed watching.

That is a pretty fly. The seals fur substitute from Fulling Mill doesn’t look very translucent. I wonder if Antron yarn might be more effective since it has flash and some translucency. Note: I am not knocking Fulling Mill. I’ve purchased several other of their products and been impressed by both quality and the quantity provided.
Re: Thread zapper. Thank you, Matt. When you introduced its use in a video several years ago, I bought one and find it very helpful. Besides zapping thread and errant fibers on flies (& clothing), it is useful in clearing resin or nail polish from hook eyes by softening the resin, so a bodkin can poke through to open the eye. Just be sure to have thorough ventilation and to clean the heating element before storage. I bent the tip of the heating element to make it easier to clear a hook eye and found the bent tip helps me be more precise for the other uses.

Great tips Bob! I thought about you this weekend, and have been meaning to email. About those circle hooks you sent me a while ago. So I have a dozen or so BIG flies on them. I was out chasing snakeheads this past Saturday. Three big takes, but no solid hook-ups. I probably panicked and tried to set the hook before it was all the way in their mouth, but not on all of them. One I had on for 3-4 seconds, he turned broadside to me and tried going deep and I pulled the hook out of his mouth. And these were BIG fish. I'm talking probably 24+ inches, maybe ten pounds. Talk about getting your adrenaline going! The only fish I landed with these flies was a largemouth bass, maybe 11-12 inches. I was using some experimental, green foam body with some flash and a lot of feathers. If it looked like anything natural, I would say a frog.
Maybe I just don't know how to fish these circle hooks, but before I head back out snakehead fishing again, I'm going to tie some topwater patterns on big #2 and 4 salmon hooks. :-)

      @FlyTyer1948 4 месяца назад

You don’t set the hook on circle in the traditional way, or you will pull it out. Once you feel the fish, point the rod at the fish, just straight strip the line like you are retrieving it, & the fish will set the hook. Just think of stripping the line without lifting the rod. That will set the hook, usually in the side of the mouth. I missed a few when I started with circles, 0:05 but hardly ever missed on once I got used to the strip strike.

Yes! You're absolutely right! There's another steelhead pattern kind of like this and the Coal Car. Maybe the Green Butt Skunk? I can't recall off hand, but I think it has the two-toned body, with the front half black.

Now you talking! I really like those Irish, Scottish, Welsh, etc wets. That seal's fur makes the body very buggy, which I like. I've never used seal's fur, but I'd like to try a substitute. Beautiful tie Matt, Thanks!

Thanks Joe! Check out the book if you want to see a lot of semi-forgotten western European patterns. Probably twenty or so plates of flies in it, with titles like Traditional Irish, River Wet Flies and Nymphs, and then one page called "USA Dry Flies." Everything else is from over the pond. amzn.to/3Jw7Ayv

Good looking fly. The colors of dubbing with the silver going through should be a nice attractor. These seldom seen patterns may be just what the trout want. Thanks.

You might be right Mel! I think by June, every trout in my homewaters have seen plenty of Prince Nymphs and bead head pheasant tails or hare's ears. Sometimes mixing it up is the ticket. :-)

Outstanding David! I went through a phase last spring trying to get better at swinging traditional wet flies. I had a couple of semi-successful outings but I still tend to go back to dry flies if I think I can make something happen. :-)

Great fly and looks fairly easy to tie. As a variation for colder temps I think I'd substitute a light blue for the red but as you said it wouldn't be a Red Arrow then but I think it'd be very fisable. Thanks again for a great fly.
