  • This is easily the most in depth video I've made to date and boy is it full of information! Who knew that the $600+ cat box market would be so competitive! Today I'm putting the Litter Robot 4 by Whisker vs The Leo's Loo Too by Smarty Pear.

Appreciate the review! I've been a Litter Robot owner for the last 12-13 years. I've owned their LR2 bubble unit and their Open Air, which I personally upgraded the circuit board when they came out with the wifi and app. I've had the last unit, which was reconditioned when I bought it, for 6 years. The motor has never died on any of mine. The only reason I've upgraded mine as time has passed is a combination of new technology being available and they do need some maintenance over time after all the day in and out abuse they take (I have 4 cats). I just retired my OA this week when I received my LR4. I agree it's not perfect, but LR has never been perfect, nor do I believe a perfect litter box exists. LR works for my household though so I continue to stick with them. In terms of customer service, this is the first time I've ever seen them struggle in all my years as a customer so I'm chalking up to a new launch and the current employment climate. I did get a hold of a rep on the phone today after about 20 minutes so I'd say they're making strides in getting back on track. I did look at the Loo when I was considering upgrading but I know for our house the my one butt-raising peer would 100% not turn around and pee outside that small box. I'm also pretty sure one of my others prefers more open spaces so that would be a no for her too. I'll definitely be keeping my eye on Loo though and look forward to seeing what they bring to the table in the future. I believe competition is a good thing. We can't forget that LR is the OG, they paved the way for the products that exist today and they will always have my respect for that.

i have been searching and searching for a video that touched on my biggest concern about getting a litterbox like this, and i finally found it! my cat has been known to use the litterbox facing away from the entrance & ends up urinating all over the floor outside. i’m so glad i came across your video because i was just about to place an order for the LR4, but i’ll be going with the leo’s loo too for this reason alone. the overall aesthetic + color options are a huge bonus for me too. thanks so much for making such a detailed comparison video- you may have just saved me hundreds of dollars and a lot of buyers remorse lol

I had and still have the LR1 as a backup for 7 years before getting and now have had the LR3 for another 7 years. My current cat is a huge 17 lbs and would not go into the LR1 because of its small opening and inside dimensions but the LR3 is just fine. There were no problems ever with the LR1, I wish they had just left it alone but for its size, no need for all the whistles and bells, because things can go wrong which they did with the LR3. It would stop in mid-cycle, still does sometimes and I have to unplug and then replug the unit, I had to replace a cable and something else which I cant remember, but with the help of video and written instructions I could do them myself. The more gadgets and electronics you attach the more can go wrong. Nevertheless, it is certainly better than having to scoop. Yes, the Leo's Loo Too is certainly less expensive than the LR4 and I don't need all the electronics both of them have, but I do wonder: where is the Leo's Loo manufactured? The LR is made in the US.

Your litter robot is dirtier inside because the litter hasn't had enough time to clump and dried down, this stains the interior during rotation, try extending the litter wait time to 15 minutes and you will see the interior stains reduced significantly as the default set wait time for LR is only 7 minutes. I believe Loo interior is cleaner because of the longer wait time and litter had enough time to clump.

I have the LR4 and have been quite happy with it. I did encounter sensor issues and the dreaded red light indicator in the first month. But after setting the drum correctly on the base and cleaning all sensors, it’s worked perfectly for the last 3 months. Regular maintenance is important. Also understanding how the sensors work and their location will help.
Great to see competition in this product type line, great for the consumer. If you’re thinking about getting an automated litter box, these things are well worth it.

I must say GREAT REVIEW!!!!!!!! You know I've had actually every iteration except for the latest version of litter robot I bought my 1st little robot one before they even had the window at least 16 years ago and I've had 2 of that iteration. The litter robot 2 in my opinion was their best design it had sensors but it would continue to function and go back to home. With maybe it an old clump of litter that got stuck and then it got unstuck and then it ended up in the pile of litter and I'm OK with that because at least The cats have somewhere to go if you're not home and can't reset it. The litter robot 3 is the one I've had for about the last year and it's been nothing but a headache and I've come so close to throwing them out the window and the thing is as I didn't buy 1 I didn't buy 2 I bought 3 new ones last year of litter robot 3 connect and it has gotten me so angry That I've actually kicked it around the room! And I've never ever in 63 years have I ever done something Like that to anything in my life, especially that I've spent that kind of money on. But yeah I've gotten really zero support I've contacted them I got an email back and telling me that oh you're warranties running out January 6th and it's been crickets ever since so yeah they let my warranty run out did not take care of it and I've tried the hacks that I found for covering up the litter robot 3's pinch sensor and I would say 50% it works, but when I have to check my litter Box 3 times A-day That's more than when I had a scoopable standard Basic plastic Box with no mechanism. I appreciate the fact that you really were unbiased. Me my video would say NO, NOT NOW NOT EVER CHOOSE LITTER ROBOT AGAIN.

Apparently the ceo sent an apology but But many people were still waiting for replies weeks later…. Yikes. Then I read more comments from people who have had failure issues very early on, some not even working from day one. I DONT like the large opening of the robot4 because of obvious reasons…. Smell, appearance, etc…. But there aren’t many alternatives. I asked in online groups and was directed to the Leo’s loo too. Their reviews seem so much better and customer service appears to be more responsive but I still haven’t decided between the two…. Certainly, information to think about. However, I've noticed in at least one earlier video that you've had problems with your LR4 which others have also experienced. But although LR has more or less fixed these issues through software upgrades, it seems to suggest you have an ax to grind which colors your review here somewhat.
While the LLT is still a great choice and is also hard to go wrong with, ultimately, and at the end of the day, I'd EASILY give the nod to the Litter Robot. LR/Whisker has been in business for many years now and has continually upgraded and perfected its products. In fact, feature-for-feature I feel far more comfortable with them and believe you unfairly gave the LR short shrift. In fairness, yes, I own an LR4 (and LR3). So not having tried the LLT personally, it colors my opinion similarly. Yet the bottom line remains that I'm extremely happy with my Litter Robots. I'm still glad you've found the solution that works for you personally and thank you for taking the time and effort to give us the benefits of your own experience. There are certainly more than one choice now and competition is always good!

Now if you wanted me to do a head to head comparison of pickup trucks, yeah, I'd definitely have a bias. 😂 Either way, I'm glad you love your LR3 and 4. One more thing, my LR4 is a replacement that is current on its firmware. If you watch closely when I'm letting both the units run their cycles, the LR4 actually hangs up and gives me the red light again. @michaelbresso Год назад

Fair enough. While I believe you've merely had the bad luck of being one of the 0.5% with a troubled machine any manufacturer might churn out, you can only judge based on your personal experience, which I know -- at least for your LR4 -- hasn't been good. But who knows, it might very very well have been me producing this same review video had your karma been mine. I wanted to add that having to replace the sensors every year or so isn't necessarily a complaint. Cat urine, poops, and litter dust create a harsh environment, so with the pinch and drawer-full sensors being near the waste drawer, it means those parts are going to take abuse. Being able to repair a $550 item myself with a $30 part is actually a selling point because it avoids obsolescence or having to dump a malfunctioning unit into a landfill. I just wanted share that part of my experience. A fully functional LR3 is a great thing and I don't regret my purchase

Still think I like the gen 1 box but with a baby coming the enclosure will be a must.

Thank you for providing an unbiased review. I was not familiar with the 'Leo Loo too' before watching your review. Although I'm interested in owning either unit now I find it difficult to justify the cost. The con of both units is the price.
The price has jumped up since you made this video. It must be due to inflation LOL… it was $649.99. If you are lucky you can get $20 off.

Thank you for the comment! You are absolutely right about the cost. Is the convenience worth the price? It's honestly hard to say. Thank you so much for the awesome review. The price on the LLT has come up and is now about the same as the LR4, so trying to decide if I want to go for it. I have to agree with you re: LR4’s support. I actually ordered a LR4 in November for delivery before/by Christmas. On the delivery day (second week of December), it went into limbo with FedEx. Contacted LR4’s support and was told that the FedEx hub was experiencing delays and to let them know if no receipt within 3 business days. No receipt via FedEx so contacted LR4 again with no response. Reached out again and was told a replacement would be sent priority with delivery by 12/30. Annnnd that didn’t happen. So I figured, ok, this is definitely a sign that the LR4 is not for me. XD.

  • @wild399
    @wild399 4 месяца назад

The problems I've encountered with both these designs is the rubber litterbox floor. Cats tear them up over time. Then 2 things happen. First, litter starts sticking to the rubber and in a short time you have strong ammonia smell. Second, the holes in the rubber allow urine to leak underneath, this causes the metal weight to corrode and fall out of the rubber which results in: the rubber not "dropping" to dislodge stuck litter and urine seeping onto the drum track and motor.

    • @wild399

My LR3 lasted less than 3yrs and died because the sensors was fried. The contact sensors also rusted from contact with waste. But worrying that they still have all these sensors that can stop it working. One flaw I did immediately notice with the Leo's Loo Too in your review was how big the holes are in the grills. That definitely won't sift out the smaller pieces.

I found it because I'm having issues with my 3 weeks old LR4, after the third time it has been replace, first one came with a crack from front to back, second one sensor would not work well, and this one the third one has issues with the basket weight and after spending 20 min waiting for someone to answer the phone, asked for a manager had to wait for manager to call back and she called pretty quick extended the trial period send me a gift package and sent me an email with all trouble shutting steps of your other LR$ video, fingers cross I clean the sensors and will give it three days to see how it works. Like somethings for the Leo's Loo Too, But that pup mess on the trey at the bottom and because of that basket design through me off, one thing, My LR4 doesn't get that dirty inside, that could be how much cat digs and covers pee and poop , I have set mine at 7min. Also I have an 18 year old cat and I would picture any old cat Struggling entering the small hole, plus it sits higher, the dripping of pee; I have not have an issue once, my cats walked in move around dig and usually don't pee on the front, but sides or back. I think this review provides some good points but I thought the Leo Loo Too's problem with cat waste and poop getting smeared was overlooked a little quickly. Some of the other pros/cons are valid but at the end of the day, there isnt much worse than constantly cleaning up poop because the hole on the Leo Loo Too waste drawer is ultra small.

That's exactly what I think as well, having to clean raw poop from the tray and the inside looks absolutely terribe for me, I loved the big capacity on the LR4 so If only the Leo's had that same space for the poop I believe I would have definately inclined to buy it (not only me but I believe so many people as well) since the perfect scenario is you having all the time taking the tray out ON TIME, the reality is we are not always that precise, so having poop smeared very often really discouraged me. That sucks since I am seeing a large amount of people complaining about the LR4. I am happy they have such good competitors which is what really improves all company's quality on their products

I have reservation about the collection at the opening of the the lid of the waste container design but I'm surprise that no one else talked about it. Does everyone have to jiggle the container everyday to distribute the waste evenly inside the container to prevent the waste from building up into the opening hence causing a big mess? I have not pulled the trigger because of this. I may have to consider the LR4 even though I like the look of the Leo's much better.

For that reason, I ended up getting rid of it. I like the sound of the Leo Loo . My only concern is, that one of my cats is 6kg and when he pees he goes in and pees without turning around so sometimes the pee would run down the front, like you mentioned. My question is do you think this would happen with the Leo Loo if they didn't turn around and face forward?

I came across your comparison with the LL2 and LR4 right after I returned a LL2 and ordered the LR4 and decided to revisit this comparison now that I’ve had my LR4 for 4 weeks - not long, I know. I appreciate how thorough you are with both units. One thing which should be mentioned is that while the company that makes the Leo’s Loo is in CA, they do not manufacture the actual item. It’s manufactured in China. On Amazon, the question on Country of Origin was asked and Smarty Pear responded by saying “We are a Palo Alto, CA based company with a US based support team.” - this is also what they state on their website. Some would call this deflection; I call it dishonesty. My Leo’s Loo Too started glitching right out of the box, and by day 6 it would not cycle on its own. Multiple calls to Support resolved nothing. I resorted to manually cycling. The app never connected. Ever. Due to the small drawer and that pile-up issue you pointed out I was having to take apart the globe to clean it daily. My husband said to send it back and get the US made Litter Robot 4. We’ve been thrilled with the Litter Robot 4! App connected right off and it does so much! Our inquisitive cat liked both the LL2 and the LR4, while our scaredy-cat never used the LL2 due to the small opening but used the LR4 right off the bat also. Our youngest pees against the LR4’s ‘gate’ every time and it hasn’t leaked (knock on wood!). Neither the LL2 or the LL4 had poo smears, but we extended the cycle times. Different experiences for everyone, I suppose 🙂 I sincerely hope your LL2 continues to please you, and I agree they are darned pricey! Thanks!

      1. The initial setup (to my knowledge) has to be done on a phone. There's only a single button on the LL2 so I'm not sure how much functionality there is without the app.
      2. The LR4 can go longer in between emptying because of the drawer design. The LL2 requires a "shake down" every 2 days or so because the waste piles up at the opening. The LR4 has a wider opening and allows it to fall more evenly in the drawer.

To save you 34 min of your time, ChatGPT to the rescue:
The video is a detailed comparison between two automated cat litter boxes: the Litter Robot 4 (LR4) and the Leo's Loo 2 (LL2). Here's a summary of the key points and the conclusion:
Operation: Both units operate similarly, using a rotating mechanism to sift through the litter and deposit waste into a separate compartment.
Design Flaws: Both units have design flaws. The LL2 has a smaller waste opening, which can lead to overflow if not emptied frequently. The LR4 has a larger opening, but the reviewer noted instances where the cat urinated out of the opening, causing a mess.
Cleaning and Maintenance: The LL2 requires more frequent emptying due to its smaller waste compartment. However, the LR4 was noted to be dirtier and required more cleaning due to its larger opening, which allowed more litter to spill out.
App Functionality: Both units have apps that provide notifications and controls. The LR4's app was noted to have more features, including a measurement of how full the waste drawer is.
Customer Support: The reviewer had a better experience with the customer support for LL2, being able to connect directly with the company's CEO. The LR4's customer support was criticized for being difficult to reach.
Value for Money: The LL2 is cheaper than the LR4, and the reviewer felt it offered better value for money due to its performance and the included accessories.
In conclusion, the reviewer preferred the Leo's Loo 2 over the Litter Robot 4, despite both having their own flaws. The LL2 was seen as more reliable, easier to maintain, and better value for money. However, the reviewer emphasized that neither product is perfect and potential buyers should weigh the pros and cons based on their specific needs.

We have two pretty good sized cats and they both squeeze in there with no issues. I think that might be part of the reason why they preferred the LL2 over the LR4. A bit more privacy for when they did their business.

The LLT is now $699 with the mat and liners. I wish I’d gotten in a month ago!

I’ve had the litter robot 4 for 8 days and I’m not happy with it at all. It’s constantly having issues and today we had to spend 90 mins getting it to work. Meanwhile the cat peed on the floor. Lovely. Just what I spent 1k dollars for lol. Ordering the loo too now and I’ll see what one I’m keeping or maybe both. Insane someone hasn’t made one of these that is truly great. Maybe the loo is the answer.

As I pointed out in this video, the Loo Too doesn't have the bells and whistles that the LR4 has but...... it..... just..... works.. And works. And works. No problems, minimal maintenance, it works.
