Realistically, most people aren't spending thousands or even several hundreds of dollars a month on beauty maintenance. This is one of those things where social media is making it seem more prevalent than it really is.

TBF, a lot of people are definitely spending more than they should be on "beauty maintenance" when the rest of their finances are a mess. I had a friend doing the payment plan at Walmart for groceries because she had already spent her monthly budget on "beautification". Girl, no, pay for the necessities first 😭

Yep, my main finds were from Walmart, shops that support a show (like my BattleBots shirts), and some were even made on Vistaprint since no one's gonna have shirts with my OCs on them, lol. I have my pfp on a shirt for example and it's one of my faves. It was pricier than Walmart or Goodwill, but those shirts have lasted me for YEARS, so they're worth it, and some are simply Fruit of the Loom t-shirts.

I was going out and trying the “high maintenance lifestyle” to see what it was like and trying out beauty trends “like fake freckles” (which I think is dumb btw and regret posting with it on 😂 but it was all for the experiment). I was in shocked and I was not ready 😭. I cannot afford that lifestyle at all. Not even the “affordable” version. Even if I could, I wouldn’t. Growing up in Europe in the 80's, the beauty trend was to be natural with very light makeup. I used mascara and blush, never had any facials, nails, waxing or hair extensions. I used baby soap as a cleanser and a moisturizing lotion for my face. Now, in my sixties my skin looks great. I use drugstore moisturizer and make-up, I've always been low maintenance!

I braid my own hair. I live with real winters. I moisturize daily. I get pedicures at beginning of the summer and then maintain it after that, change polish etc. I do my own manicures. To get anyone to do any of these things is a pamper. Going broke is not self care.

Budgeting is something that should be taught in schools. It was one thing I had to learn when I became a single mom. And let me say once I had it down, I did my best to teach my girls my idea of the "right way" to do it.
When I did try to date again the man I settled for had no clue of how to budget, however had these grandiose ideas that he made so much money and should be farther than he was. He had no clue that he was blowing X2 the amount of what his necessities where on unnecessarily crap.
Bills, rent, truck payments, phone all came to 2000 on top of this he was blowing 4000+ on eating out, drinking, use once tools, and buying friends.

I feel like a lot of people use the terms maintenance and self-care interchangeably. Maintenance can definitely be a form of self-care but sometimes it can just be self-destructive, expecially when you are not able to afford it.
Personally, I have started becoming high maintenance to be low-maintenace on a day to day basis. Like not having to worry about putting a lot of time and effort into getting ready every day has been great for my mental health. For example one of my biggest investments are my hair, because it is the most frustrating aspect of my beauty routine and has caused many emotional breakdowns. So having a professional take care of it regularly and getting protective styles done have truly been life changing.
I definitely understand that a lot of my maintenance expenses are luxuries and expecially viewed so by others. But for me they have become ways of making my life easier and more manageable.

Correct. But I feel like most of these women are differentiating between what they can do themselves and what they can’t so they “have to“ pay for it. I for example can do my nails and facials if I want to myself but I get my hair bleached because I ruined it doing it myself.

Aside from that, just because you may look pretty doesn't mean your don't have an ugly attitude or personality.
Just because someone thinks they're Cleopatra doesn't mean that they don't have the personality of Freddy Krueger. If you're an abusive, naggy bitty, you're ugly, no matter how you look.

Haircut every 5-6 weeks, $30. Hair thickener $5 a tube that lasts about two months. Don't do mani-pedis, eyebrows, waxing, facials, etc. Use Biore face wash, $7 a month. Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion for face and body, $5 a bottle. Dollar store body wash, $1 a month. Big splurge, face mattifier at $10 a tube but it lasts over a month because I only wear it if I'm going out. If an occasion comes where I need makeup I could get some eyeliner and Great Lash mascara, but I don't keep it around. As for the hoo-haw, shaving works with dollar store razors.

I’m very very concerned about facial dysmorphia due to a combination of heavy makeup, photo filters, Botox and fillers, wigs and weaves, etc etc. How will they feel if they no longer have the money to keep it up for one reason or another? How will this affect the way they perceive unavoidable aging? Is it difficult for women to look in the mirror without wearing makeup now? Do they recognize themselves? Do these things actually give you worse self esteem because you tell yourself you HAVE to do them to be attractive?

    • @qwert36130
      @qwert36130 2 месяца назад +9

Is does make me think, do they feel they are ugly without it? What if they want to find love - will they be ok with him/her seeing them first thing in the morning?
Self-care starts from within and then extends outwards. Working on having a good, kind personality (attractive qualities) is more beautiful than good looks.

There are some things I would like to get done professionally like my hair but today is not the time and it be like this. I'm grateful for what I have an my ability to do all this. I consider myself mid to high maintenance but I genuinely enjoy doing all of that myself and I've been finessed out of my money multiple times for horrible nail jobs and hair too on top of looking like a mess.

Honestly, I don't care how you look; If you have a rotten attitude, you're ugly. I don't care how many plastic surgeries or false lashes you've done. I'll deem myself better looking than you simply because at least I'm not acting like I own the place and people should bow to my good looks.

i have insanely sensitive skin and shaving was misery and required a 6 step 5 product routine and really expensive razor heads i’d go through like crazy. all of that and id probably still experience a lot of discomfort and now it just…doesn’t.
its not hard to do at home (i am white and i would not risk it on darker skin, you could end up scarring yourself) and it works and its saving me so much on razor heads/soothing products/wax appointments. its a lot up front but its worth it imo.

Meditation app: $120 / year. But I've been married for years and my husband loves the sporty and comfortable look.

I don’t even use any serums or stuff like that. My mum makes homemade rose toner using rose petals which is soo good for my face. Not me rotating the 20 or 30 clothes I’ve had since 2020😂. I only buy clothes whenever I have an important event to go to and I also donate my old clothes.

I love my natural hair color and wave. I get a low maintenance layered cut about x2 a year when my bangs get too long. At great clips, lol. $20 with coupon and tip. I love my natural skin (on my face at least, lol everywhere else I have eczema.). I use the Tea Tree Special shampoo for hair face and body, and their conditioner moisturizer as hair conditioner, moisturizer and lotion. Those are about $30 each for ginormous bottles that last forever. I have a hibiscus and rose water toner face spray that I use after a shower before moisturizer and that was maybe $16 for a 16oz bottle. Then I use a Glow primer and then their tinted spf. Both under $10. The most expensive stuff I use is Laura Gellar's brighten and glow powders, eyeshadow/blush and lipstick. I think it was under $100 for the package with a couple brushes. I have a clear vitamin mascara under $10, and wwaterproof eyeliner markers under $10. I hate how most product feels on my face so my products are light and everything listed above I bought in April and have barely made a dent in. I hate how nails feel on my fingers and sometimes even longer natural nails so I keep them clean bare and neatly trimmed. I have a couple silk pillow cases and those microfiber hair genies for dry drying after shower. And before I put on anything, right after the shower, I do an all over high spf sunscreen. So I barely spend much of anything month to month after an initial investment and I still feel like a million bucks. It's all in your mindset.

Damn, these women must be downright hideous if it takes that much work just to “maintain” themselves. In all seriousness, a healthy diet, exercise and hygiene are maintenance. Beauty enhancements are a luxury and no amount of girl math can justify going broke over it. It’s good to treat yourself on occasion if it gives you a mood boost, but don’t say it’s part of your lifestyle as if it’s essential to your survival.

Working within one's budget really is the key! I don't have a lot of money so I do my own nails and hair, and don't get facials, etc. Although I do spend some money on makeup and skincare products, and a few clothing items per month, and I get laser hair removal because I have an actual full on beard... I do also buy cheap wigs a few times a year. All in all I probably don't even spend 200 dollars a month (on average) on everything. Is it the best that it can be? No, but it's good enough and it's within my budget.

Wow! Maintenance sooooo expensive! I would never! My money goes for dental care 2X year, entertainment, dinner/ lunches at nice restaurants 4 - 5 times a month, repairs/ upgrades on my house that I alone own. Cloths shopping at upscale local thrift shop approximately $200. per year, hair style 4X year (once per season) just cut (love my hair as it is!) $200. year, including tip. Makeup I use very little (drugstore brands) under $100. year. Nails, I do my own. I bought the supplies last year on Amazon $??? not much. I’m a true minimalist. I can’t stand wasting money. For this I have no debt and a very comfortable life. Annnnd, I look good! Relaxed, natural, and healthy😁.

I spend about 30-40 pounds a month on nails, 130-140 pounds every 10 weeks on hair and maybe 20 a month topping up makeup supplies.
    That is it tbh.
Then again I eat right which helps so much with skin/hair/nails.
A result of eating right means not being overweight which makes you feel better and helps with hygiene and lack of sugary diet helps with teeth.
I am lucky that I have natural straight blonde hair so no highlights or straightening means no expensive hair products or styling.

1: Pink dove soap (I’m clean, smell great and don’t get pimples)
2: Cocoa butter lotion & oil
    3:Chanel & Juicy Couture Perfume/body spray
    4:Blow dryer/Flat iron/hair curler
5: “Not your mothers” 10 in 1 hair protector
6: Milk of magnesia as makeup primer like $2-$3
7: Nyx makeup and my foundation is KVD good Apple
    8: 2 lacefronts from Amazon
9: I paint my nails red or pink. For pageants, I will get them done professionally
10: Strip lashes from beauty supply are 99 cents
You can be pretty on a dime. Girls who spend thousands a month are usually in debt, and do not know how to shop mindfully.

Also i did try those stick on nails and its so pretty but to be honest I'm to wild that it doesn't last long with me. So i just put my own gel nail polish on my nails and have the uv light other than that i just leave my nails natural. My hair i do every once in a while but other than that its always in a bun. So my morning routine is not washing my face at all. I do it at night, and I don't see how it can even get dirty while you sleep. I brush teeth. Put my hair up in a ponytail. My hair just actually depends on what I'll be doing that day. I have not gotten a haircut in years. If I need a cut, I tie my hair and just cut. Does it come out even? no, but I just don't want to go get my haircut. Maybe next year I'll get a haircut because I have really been wanting layers, and unfortunately, idk how to do that. I spent $11-12 in a box hair dye. I have never colored my hair either, so I'm going to give it a try at home. Through the day, I wear sunscreen and carry a hand lotion. My hands get very dry from washing them a lot. If I feel fancy, I shape my nails and use nail polish. I have always wanted to try the gel nail polish, but you have to be careful with them. I'll just keep using regular nail polish. During the night, I do wash my face. I use panoxyl because I suffer from acne. I have a toner, and at last, I use a thick cream like the aveeno baby eczema therapy night balm. It's a big tub, so it last awhile and I tend to use it on other areas that start to get super dry. I also take a shower at night, so I use a body lotion every night. It is also an eczema cream. I don't suffer from it, but it keeps me moisturized. When I wake up in the morning, my body and face are moisturized. So sunscreen is all I do. I would like to get my haircut at least once though. Something with bangs and layers look nice. Coloring it as well I always wondered how I would look in a different hair color. I would also like to get my nails and lashes done. Also, a little facial or something for my face. I have been trying to at least try it once, but it's really hard to justify the price. As a mom who let herself go I feel like I need a little pick me up. Maybe next year I would be able to do one or 2 of the things I have been wanting.
