Chris Knight is a brilliant songwriter and this is such a great song. Btw, the. line you are hearing as "grain" is actually "LaGrange" - "he's locked up in LaGrange." There's a federal prison in LaGrange, Kentucky.
Chris has a BUNCH of quality music. A true writer...... Has a catalog of excellent music. His hometown is about half hour from mine..... Have seen him many times. Absolutely love this dude. Good work on this video man.
We got a small prison in La Grange, TX but what we're really known for is whorehouses! ZZ top did a song called "La Grange" about the Chicken Ranch brothel. Dolly and Burt's "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" is based on the same place.
@@kodybaker1228 I got you and I think you were right about Chris referring to La Grange in Kentucky. It just reminded me of the Texas town of the same name and I figured I'd unload some trivia :-) Happy Friday!
Kentucky State Penitentiary. Is actually in eddyville Ky, you're right tho there are a couple compounds in Lagrange and that is what he was referring to
I am a big Chris Knight fan and there is a deep rabbit hole of great songs of his. The 2 "Trailer Tapes" cd's are great demo type recordings of his music. He is as real of a story teller as it gets and goes down some dark paths! Try "Thorn Tree Shade" by Volume Five!

Was channel surfing one Sat. during a particularly rough time in my life. I heard "singer/ songwriter from Slaughter, Ky" as i zoomed through and switched back 2-3 channels to the program "The Edge of Country." This was what I heard and saw. I believe they also played "Framed" afterwards. Anyhow, I learned that he was playing "The Blue Plate Special" in Knoxville, TN a couple of weeks later and went to that show. I remember hearing "House and 90 Acres" and "It Ain't Easy Being Me" there and every single song he played resonated with me. I bought his first CD and got to talk to him a minute and got a picture with him after the show. It wasn't long until I'd bought all the music he'd recorded. I've been a huge fan since day one. I've grown up and lived my life in southeast KY and northeast TN. Chris sings about places I've been and people I could swear I know, with a familiar story in every song. Sometimes he sings about me. I love a whole slew of other singer-songwriters, some already mentioned in this thread, but in my opinion, he hits a place in my heart and soul like nobody else. Chris Knight IS the goat! I'm excited about his upcoming release "Almost Daylight" and haven't been disappointed by the cuts I've heard from it already. We're looking forward to seeing him soon in Middlesboro' KY, keep on keeping on Chris!
@KentuckyRedneck13 Great stuff right there! You're a lot like me, in that music has been known to pull me out of hard places at different times in life. And such a cool thing about meeting Chris at a time when his music ran deep in your soul. Keep the faith, and welcome to the channel!!
Love Chris Knight. He reminds me of throwing John Prine, Steve Earle, John Cougar Mellencamp and a beer into a blender. Anything off of any of his albums is great. The music Fog video of North Dakota is a good one to check
Chris Knight is perhaps the greatest musical story teller these days. Some of his favorites in my viewpoint are: "William, It ain't Easy Being Me, Framed, House and 90 Acres, North Dakota".
You mentioned William, then there was I'm William's Son. Which I thought was brilliant. According to someone I talked to who knows him both true stories.
He's locked up in La Grange Texas dude & why in the hell would it get blocked none of his songs should ever be blocked from anyone ever unless you don't like great songs by a great artist ✔️
I'm a big Chris Knight fan and I'm also a fan of your reactions I would love for you to do a reaction to Chris Knight's song WILLIAM it is a great song thanks
Your reaction to the end of the chorus when he said "you can't hang yourself if you ain't got enough rope" 😂😂. Man that's just one of those lines that stops you in your tracks
You got me, Jeremy!! It totally stopped me in my tracks. And I gotta admit, I frickin LOVE it when that happens. That's living life when someone hits you like that and your jaw doesn't hurt. Ha!
Chris writes about as honest and heartfelt a song as you'll ever hear. Just watching your reactions and what you reacted to -- check out "Crooked Road" and "North Dakota." Would love to hear your thoughts. And the "in the grain" line is actually "he's locked up in La Grange" as in La Grange, Kentucky, home of the Kentucky State Reformatory.
I know I’m late. Chris Knight is a great song writer. Check out broken plow it’s a American history lesson about the poor people from Midwest heading to cali to get rich. Soundtrack for the old book grapes of wrath
I would like to request an old song "No Charge" by Melba Montgomery. It has a wonderful simple lesson for the young kids who seem to think they deserve every thing. Talking about the bratty kids.
IMO, this isn't about a man who has made the choice to walk the line. Its about not even having enough "rope" to wander from the line. Many of us are stuck in the line that our decisions led us to, and we do the best we can with what we have. Often times after taking care of your family and responsibilities there isn't enough resources left to follow any dreams, so you "haul them all away". Its the anthem of many many men, and probably just as many women. To me its sad, but reality.
Wow! I'm thinking that tells the story for a huge percentage of people in this world. It's interesting...I don't think that's either "sad" or "glad" ... just ... fact ...
Since you're kinda keepin' track of where people are from, you might have to split hairs on this guy. Born in Kentucky and lives in Kentucky but keeps a permanent home on the Texas Music Charts. So much so that former Gov. Rick Perry officially adopted him as a citizen of Texas in 2003! Chris loved the honor but when he tries to remind people that he's actually from Kentucky no one in Texas will hear it...
Thanks, hoss! I've done four of Daryle's songs already, but haven't hit The Note yet.
