    Winter tires are always the most important component for driving in snowy condition. I never understood people spending big buck for a SUV and cheap out on getting a set of winter tires.

    Portland, Oregon rarely gets snow ❄, so the city is never prepared. A couple of years ago my F-Pace was the snow and ice taxi for family from 3 different houses. It did fine, even with all season tires.

    I’ve had an F-Pace for 3 years, and just this winter finally tried out the ASPC mode in the snow. Snow/ice mode with launch control is good, but the ASPC seems to be what you want to enable for the slickest conditions (0-20 mph cruise control with descent control).

    Most crossovers have barely adequate all wheel drive systems and the F-Pace is no different, except that it primarily a rear drive rather than a front drive system. Irrespective of the system design and engineering, tires are the most important factor. No matter how sophisticated the AWD system, if the tires don't work, your ride will be arduous and hazardous.
    I've driven many of the current crop of crossovers, including an F-Pace. I like the F-Pace a lot. I didn't drive it in snow, but I have driven other crossovers in snow. These include the Forester, Santa Fe, Rav4, Mazda CX-5 and Escape. The best, by far, was the Mazda CX-5. Unlike every other manufacturer, Mazda's system is predictive rather than reactive. Reactive systems wait until one axle has lost traction before transferring torque to the other axle. That's simply too late, because the spinning wheels are, effectively, useless at contributing to traction. Mazda's system distributes torque based upon analysis of 27 sensors that determine if traction MIGHT be lost. Thus, all four wheels retain traction. Adhesion in snow is phenomenal compared to reactive systems. Mazda's OEM all season Yokohama tires work much better than I had expected. I have video of the CX-5 in 1"-2" of snow on winding roads, and the Mazda maintains a comfortable speed (at the speed limit), without the slightest hint of slipping, even under braking. It gets through deeper snow (8") without serious drama, but greater depth is pushing one's luck...
    For serious snowstorms, I have a Jeep Wrangler JK fitted with TreadWright Warden Kedge Grip tires. These tires are unique in that the rubber compound contains ground glass and crushed walnut shell. Nothing, and I really mean "nothing", matches these tires on snow and ice. They go, steer and stop like no other winter tire. Mine are installed on a set of factory wheels and are used exclusively in winter. Because the tire has a lesser volume of rubber, they wear faster than standard tires. Thus, I only install them for months when snow is common. The remaining 8 months, I run mud-terrain type tires (which are marginal on packed snow or ice, at best). If you drive a Jeep or light truck and live in the snow belt, check out TreadWright at www.treadwright.com/

      SPAM. Mazda's system is one of the worst ones, with open diffs in slippery conditions you're basically driving a 2 wheel drive car. Mazda joins Honda and Hyundai/Kia among the worst ones where traction control cannot control that and work as a quasi LSD (cannot brake the spinning wheel which would send power to the other).

      Let's watch a few videos....
      ruclips.net/video/J66v5hdHAxw/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/2o8awlEdPdo/видео.html
      Note, on this second video, all vehicles were driven by members of the automotive press, not Mazda employees.
      ruclips.net/video/PUXCKaR9ZUo/видео.html

    • @sic22l
      @sic22l 7 лет назад +3

      Second video is basically a Mazda guy saying what he has to say. Second and third video come from the same event organised by Mazda.
      First video shows a situation thta has nothing to do with real life. Both rear wheels were on the tarmac with the perfect grip. Open diffs played no role here. But they did matter here:
      ruclips.net/video/xlt11Z4JAB8/видео.htmlm4s
      CX-5 pretty much failed (and it had just one wheel in the air!). That's where it lacks - when niether axle has perfect grip, traction control is unable to brake the wheel that's spinning - that would force the diff to send power to another wheel which has some grip and go forward. On the icy road you're quite likely to lack grip on both axles.

    • @CoreyCJordan
      @CoreyCJordan 7 лет назад +1

      I've seen that video and they state that traction control is turned off. Moreover, having watched other tests at the same places with other vehicles, the driver has a habit of stopping certain vehicles when a wheel is in the air, and with others, not stopping. Stopping and the loss of momentum is the primary culprit in unloading the tires. It also helps to have more suspension articulation as seen with solid axle trucks and Jeeps.
      But, let's discuss what I was talking about, and it wasn't climbing up 45° slopes at angles. That's not something I'd use any crossover for. My Wrangler will deal with that like a parking lot speed bump. I was discussing road driving in snow conditions. So, let's stick to the topic. I presented videos that were specifically about just that. Sure, Mazda was showing off their cars. But, they also brought the competition and all were driven by automotive press. The CX-5 and CX-3 were clearly superior on snow. We own a 2015 Impreza, driven mostly by my wife. My daily driver is a 2016.5 CX-5 (several mid-year upgrades over the 2016, including revised i-Activ programming). Having driven both the Subaru and the Mazda in snow, the CX-5 is simply better. It suffers almost no wheel spin and maintains superior traction at all speeds. On snow covered roads where the Subaru understeers badly, the Mazda is nearly neutral. Granted, the Impreza isn't a crossover and has considerably less ground clearance. However, in two inches of snow, that isn't a factor. Mazda adjusts torque to prevent slippage, where Subaru adjusts power after slippage occurs. As could be shown with my Wrangler, locked front diffs are bad news in snow, because the vehicle simply resists turning. You DO NOT want the front wheels rotating at the same speed when turning. The tighter radius on the inside wheel results in it sliding and that results in understeer. "Snow wheelers" understand this. I installed an Aussie locker up front, that can be disengaged by simply lifting the throttle and reducing torque. Induce a bit of wheel spin under power and it locks up again. This makes my Jeep far more maneuverable than a standard Rubicon with both axles electrically locked. When it snows just a few inches, we take the Mazda and leave the Subaru in the driveway. When we get heavy snow, we leave both in the driveway and take the Jeep.

      I went through 2 Outbacks and a WRX and I loved all of them. Last year replaced Outback XT (2.5 Turbo) with F-Pace and after a 10k miles would do this again without hesitation. The driving fun is like WRX plus all the SUV/space benefits. Steering, suspension and power (have 340hp v6 supercharged engine) is what makes is so much special than the Outback. Of course it costs more but was worth it, at least for me. Test drive it and you will see what I am talking about.
