- 1/15/22 second update: @andrewcallaghan7333 has posted a new video ( • In Response ) relating to recent news. Thank you Andrew for finally addressing the allegations, and outlining steps to work on yourself. Please take the opportunity to set an example for how to improve going forwards.
1/15/22 update: Reiterating what I wrote in my pinned comment and said in my followup video ( • Introducing myself aft... ), I strongly encourage Andrew and @Channel5RUclips to take the allegations seriously, apologize for wrongdoing, work to chart a better course forwards that ensures this sort of thing does not happen again, and also allow a variety of different budding journalists to take turns getting more chances with interviewing and leadership roles at @Channel5RUclips .
1/10/22 update: I have added a pinned comment discussing the emerging allegations that I learned about after filming and posting this video.
I put together videos I recorded with Andrew Callaghan of @Channel5RUclips fielding questions in a sometimes heated interview with Robin Young at WBUR Boston, after a screening of his documentary This Place Rules, about divisive media and politics leading up to the 2020 election and Jan 6.
Who's here after the Lex Fridman podcast with Andrew? Ayyyyyyyyyy
Fr I love lex
Me!
He did a good job. The last Zuckerberg and Lex interview with the AI goggles made me tear up. We live in interesting times. Elon musk is a fraud.
Yup!
I'm not a huge fan of Lex's style and it bugged me that he pronounced Andrew's last name wrong every time he said it, but I'm thrilled that he posts a friggin 3-hour interview with someone like Andrew Callaghan and ends up getting such good content out there.
the audience laughing at how horrible her questions are restores my faith in humanity
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This, this is what I was coming to say as well. I’m hoping these type of events can spark something in more ppl to wake the fuck up to the Hegelian dialects and manipulation on both sides.
I thought it was pretty rude and unproductive, she seemed pretty unfazed but generally it feels like a bad idea to mock someone when they’re attempting to grasp such an important message.
@@lifeoffryan always good to see a comrade with the dialectics in yt chat
@@ezanaassefa1203 It's very clear she did not want to grasp Andrew's message, old guard journalist types close themselves to criticism of media as a whole, that much was made clear with Andrew's interview on CNN where the older journalist got unreasonably mad
This was 28 minutes of this lady proving Andrew's point about the media dividing us
NPR lady “ you should correct people when they’re wrong “
Andrew “ you’re wrong “

Don’t think he says that directly and the commenter above is paraphrasing
At 13:10 she asks “Talk about your methods. Because you don’t correct them in real time?” And he responds “Yeah. It doesn’t work”
its an important question. good job on her
Its such an american thing that the interviewer needs to only ask friendly question..
@@folepi7995 that's not at all what journalism is supposed to be lol. It's to report the facts, not correct people.
Also no, it does not work. It clearly does not change people's minds when you argue with them about politics. It makes them worse.
2:01 he refutes by saying “That’s not what the movie’s a about”
She's not asking questions, she's narrating her POV.
"93% peaceful..." LOL. That is a very specific percentage.

I hope Andrew realizes that NPR is no different than the rest of the mainstream media.
She started the interview with an insult towards her GUEST!
NPR has fallen so low. This interview disgusts me
She is the key example of the message behind Andrew’s movie.
eeeexactly. and she doesn’t even realize it
not really. npr is on a different level than cnn or fox.
she asked unconftable question. but thats what an interviewer should do so he can position himself
@@folepi7995 that’s the issue, journalists should hold no position whatsoever. For her to ask questions that pigeon hold him to make a stand that he may not necessarily believe in is what Andrew has been fighting against. Journalists are meant to report what’s going on with no opinion towards it whatsoever. He said it himself every person he interviewed didn’t think that he was on their side, simply just getting their stories out.
@@folepi7995 NPR themselves have been very left leaning for a while now, toward the latter of the Trump administration they didn’t hold back on their stance on the political scale. It was sad to see.

It's amazing she starts letting her guard down toward the end of the video, and gets away from MSM brained questions.
Like just being in Andrews presence is enough to undumb yourself.
Andrew straight up feels like a vigilante journalist. Gets the job done better than anyone because he doesn’t play by the rules. This woman’s envy is almost palpable, and it feels like she’s masking it behind a veneer of so-called journalistic integrity and sound morality.
I mean can you blame her 🤣
Most journalists *used* to be very similar to Andrew, that’s ~why~ “they” had to make media what it is today, too many people calling “them” out.
Andrew is very clear about his influences and methods. He's doing Gonzo Journalism. Similar to how Hunter S. Thompson did things, but necessarily updated for the modern world. A lot of that is exactly what he said in the first 2 minutes of this video: "I only film people who were already exploiting themselves". Gonzo Journalism involves basically just "vibing" with your subject. You don't need to agree with them, you just need to shut up and go for the ride. And that brings a level of access and genuine revelation with the interview subject that, as you point out, this lady will never achieve trying to invite Jones or anyone else into a studio to do a formal interview.
Andrew is like a cross between Louis Theroux and Hunter s. Thompson. Watch what he does when interviewing people...he just follows them around and shuts up. He'll ask a question here and there but he's mostly just shooting the shit with them and knows that the people he's interviewing cannot abide silence so they'll keep talking without much prompting.
@@crabbyboy1585yes lol, anybody with a brain can tell you Alex Jones is a piece of shit and that there are satirical elements in Andrew’s journalism.
@@eldercrain Yeah he's mentioned that himself in interviews as his kind of main "strategy." Letting one's stream of consciousness flow uninterrupted yields some amazing results.
It’s hilarious listening to this woman today, in 2024, days after NPR is accused of having a liberal bias. I have a huge amount of respect for Andrew. Lex hosted a great interview.
Accused? Lol. NPR had been liberal propaganda for 15 years or more
I thought the same way.
NPR is still mainstream media. Liberal or not they barely covered Bernie Sanders because he wasn’t an establishment Democrat.
NPR has had a liberal bias for at least the last decade. It’s blatant. I used to yell at my radio on the way to work. I’ve since stopped torturing myself and just switched it off.
Have you EVER listened to NPR? You'd have to be an imbecile to listen to 10 minutes of NPR programming and not know they're super liberal...
I'm an almost 65-year-old former journalist turned copywriter. I loved Abbie Hoffman and Hunter Thompson as well as Edward R Murrow. I feel that Andrew is continuing their tradition of speaking truth to power, but in a way that doesn't condescend to people he disagrees with. I think he calls his interview approach "radical listening," and it's a perfect way to handle the inchoate babble on both sides. And I love how he showed this biased interviewer the benefits of nonjudgmental reporting. As my old Journalism professor kept hammering: "Show. Don't tell."
It's very important to see this interview uncut and unedited. This is so revealing. Thank you for posting it.

"But they lie. How is that mainstream?"
ARE YOU FOR REAL
What even is a ‘stream’? Where am I? Who gave Alex Jones a beverage??
I think the point was that part of being large is having accountability. Its like tax fraud where you can't nail every small, transient actor, so they can largely get away with being dishonest. But if a large company (that actually has money behind it) that can't simply rename or disappear makes that mistake, it's a totally different story. So you would expect "mainstream" to have to tell the truth because of liabilities. Unfortunately this doesn't actually play out because fox is mostly punditry (as Andrew points out), and they aren't held to the same standards of truth telling. If you read her as "how is that mainstream news reporting", I think it's less crazy sounding.
@@PsilovibeGraham They've all lied without retractions? I'm going to need a source on that one, chief. It's a night and day difference between 99% accurate reporting (with bias) and whatever the fuck Tucker Carlson and Alex Jones are doing. doesnt she say at one point that she thinks its fascinating?
I absolutely love his comment about "slam dunking on them for viewership". I feel like that's how we get deeper in these divides. We do not approach the problem from understanding but approach from a perspective of "you're right and I'm wrong"
Slam dunked on her this whole interview
They are wrong tho.
@@futon2345 but even if that is the case, it does nothing but worsen the divide when you attack someone saying they're wrong. All they do is dig in.
I think we ought to do to them what the Chinese are purporting to do in XJ. Send them all to Idaho and patrol the state border with drones
I disagree with the they're right and I am wrong. Instead it should be "we both have different views and we are both right and wrong in certain ways, it's okay to be growing, and we should be open to talk about things and possibly change our minds." But that would take both sides viewing it that way. So in that sense I see where your wording would help to soften or remove the guards of adversaries so meaningful discussion could be had without either side tensioning and diving deeper into allusions
As sad as it is I think it is important for Andrew to do interviews like this every once in a while. This interview made me realize that there is still a massive disconnect between new or alt media compared to mainstream media. I know Andrew hates it, but it really shows a rabbit hole of narrative the NPR interviewer went down that many other mainstream reporters follow as well.
The elitism! As a Southerner and former right winger I can attest that we noticed. And so did people like Rush Limbaugh who took full advantage of our resentment to manipulate us.
Indeed. While I’m old enough to appreciate a little “decorum” in public discourse, too often the notion gets used by the center left as an excuse to bury their heads in the sand and blame everyone but themselves for the foothold the Alex Jone’s of the world got on their watch. It’s almost as if ‘decorum’ itself has become the center left’s dog whistle for shutting down (by shaming) anyone who’s lens or questions point at uncomfortable truths.
Same she was telling a damn story trying to ask simple ass questions. It was wild. He had the answers though.
Having said that though, kudos to her for doing the interview. At least she’s engaging with the newer/younger/alternative/thoughts/ways/ideas he’s putting out there. Importantly, she struck me as being sincere with her questions. Even if a little obtuse at times, I don’t think it was intentional. Him trying to contain his annoyance at her most (arguably, “offensive”) obtuse question so that he could answer it-is a good example of why I ever appreciated “decorum” in the first place…for its ability to allow a potentially enlightening conversation to continue. Good job Andrew!
it really felt like she had an agenda. her mind was made up and she wanted to "get" andrew to admit something predetermined.

I like how in this part Andrew flipped the script and asked her about Hunter.
yea for sure people watch the first 10 min and overreact in the comments
The way I saw it, she was a fan honestly. I think what Andrew does is culturally and morally complex, especially in this era. Undoubtedly some of the questions did come off as pointed but I don't think that was a lack of respect for Andrew it was her trying to get to the core of what makes what he does tick. You even saw how she pulled back the interview immediately after Andrew points out that the question is accusatory she tells him straight up that it is, but she respects him enough to believe he'll be able to represent himself. Even before that she talks about the Don Lemon interview where he was asked similar questions and wasn't given any of the engagement he was given here. In the end, I think that we can give a little bit more credit to the veteran journalist, for asking the hard questions, and when Andrew had the right answer, crediting him for putting it to bed. Then joking like old pals at the end, her essentially admiring his journalistic style, placing him next to Hunter S Thompson. Amazing
This is the type of journalism BBC used to do frequently. By asking tough questions you allow people to defend their positions much better than throwing them softballs

thank you for posting this; it's been very helpful in unpacking and examining the phenomenon and content of Channel 5 in general and Andrew/This Place Rules in particular.
i think my takeaway is more sympathetic to the interviewer than most of the commenters and people in the crowd. her Alex Jones survivor question was really bad, i agree with Andrew's take on mainstream/liberal media, but he uses his disconnect from the system, which obviously resonated with the audience, to pressure the interviewer whenever he actually has to reflect on something. She is poignant at times, but they're not playing the same game. it's hard to address his self-styled ethics, or his views on his own branch of the journo business. everything is outmaneuvered, turned around, cards are suddenly held very close to the chest.
it shows a more calculating, controlling Andrew than you usually see in his persona. you can tell he's able to switch quickly and see rhetorical games play out in his head. he's not afraid of using the vocal part of the crowd (most of the people there?) in his advantage, or using the interviewers personal code against her, while mostly obscuring his own. you can see the outlines of his ego and the narrative he has about himself and how much of that he wants to share with the audience. which is interesting, considering the way he gets other people to share things with him and his audience that might not be beneficial to them in the long run.
i think this also says something about his friendships with Joker and that bass-smoking dude; they seem mentally unequipped to function in modern society, with poor prospects other than what they can get in the moment. Andrew has just sold a documentary to a top dog streaming service. i think, at best, he looks at them the way i look at my pets: sentient, i care for them, but definitely not my peers. at worst, i think they're just useful clowns in the circus of Channel 5.
The journalistic ethos of Andrew/Channel 5 and more broadly, the ‘gonzo’/Theroux style seems to center around the reporter allowing the subject to feel just comfortable enough to say the quiet part out loud and effectively sabotage themselves without interference that could be perceived as biased punditry. Andrew is obviously very aware of this effect, and it’s natural that he’d be keen to avoid trapping himself into the same mistakes that his subjects often make, let alone the trite and condescending gotcha strategies that we’ve all come to expect from mainstream/corporate media. If one says a single line that can be taken out of context, MSM will show no mercy in making that the headline and central focus of the piece.
Is it a bit sociopathic to hold one’s cards so tightly in order to maintain control of the conversation? Possibly. I think Andrew/C5 definitely uses its own form of ‘gotcha’ pretty often, like the crash zooms and out-of-context jump cut edits of outrageous characters. His format allows him to use the best tools from both traditional journalism and new media/entertainment whenever it’s convenient. That being said, his content is still refreshing and important because it provides more agency and respect to the subject and viewer to use their own head, at least compared to a traditional outlet full of biased opinions and pandering that feels palpable before an interview even begins.
@@mysticstylus thank you for responding.
i had a whole reply, but it's going to be tl;dr and i think i still have to piece some stuff together. once i do, i should probably not bombard someone with it in the comment section of a youtube video.
Andrew is better than Theroux, but i think the format is inherently problematic.
+ this might be exacerbated by the iconoclastic potential attibuted to Andrew and the perceived failure of "old style" journalism.
i should probably stop there, or else i never will. ;)
have a good one.
@@bobvp9434 I completely agree with your points. Channel 5’s format is much more effective than mainstream news at providing a deeper viewpoint of a subject on their own terms. And it has potential to be a positive influence upon the coming era of new-media journalism. But remaining in the grey area of authentic news and entertainment is both its greatest strength and weakness. I find this to be the biggest reason why the Daily Show/Colbert Report’s legacy has largely fallen flat in retrospect. There’s a an objectively progressive undercurrent in their presentation, but very few calls for action or ideas that legitimately challenge the status quo. It’s just a circus, as you said.
While Channel 5’s work is valuable as a document of current political discourse largely overlooked by the media machine, its tone mostly keeps it retained amongst the long list of ‘progressive’ lib media which inspires complacency and hopelessness more than authentic paths toward change, imo. This country is so long overdue for serious and respectful representation which resonates with a majority of the population that feels increasingly marginalized by the leading powers on both sides. Andrew’s work sheds light on the echo chambers pulling us apart, but does Channel 5’s content truly help in narrowing the culture war rift? I respect the platform’s supposed (not actual) neutrality as a vehicle to get the footage, but New Media needs more than a screaming sideshow and dirtbag podcasters to truly shake people out of this gigantic psyop bubble we’ve trapped ourselves in.
Cheers.
This lady spent sooooo much time trying to get him to admit to saying "my posers are tricking people" and she COULD NOT EVEN REMEMBER HER SOURCE AND THEN GAVE UP 💀💀💀
Absolute legend Thank you for uploading this, I'm glad I got to see it. I only wish it was longer but I understand the phone battery constraints.
this needs to go viral. a great example of modern day problems with ideological thought bubbles, and cognitive biases.
It's just so damn relieving every time he answers rough questions honestly, and without diverting. It makes everyone who doesn't speak honestly look so silly.
"You don't correct them in real time"
Yes, because Andrew doesn't pretend to he the arbiter of truth like MSM.
23:47 best part of the interview
They finally found something to vibe on
Andrew absolutely roasting her with body language while she’s talking about Fox is goated
21:02 Dude that's so comforting to hear, and I don't know why.
8:27 this is far and away the most angry I have ever seen Andrew on camera
i dont know why. I love andrew but i think the question was very good and interesting
this is the best commercial for airmax 90’s i’ve ever seen
For anyone curious, the interview she's referencing starting at 15:30 seems to be from the Stranger, and Andrew says “They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, but I just disagree about stealing art in general. I’m not going to say I own that interview style, but yeah it doesn’t flatter me at all. Every city has a copycat." Title of the article is "All Gas No Brakes Has Died, but Seattle's Own Andrew Callaghan Has Been Resurrected".
This really feels like its just another Channel 5 video, I love it
Thanks Rob. You the best. 🙌
Other than the points where she was going hard left, I enjoyed a lot of the questions and topics she brought up.
CLUTCH, had to search this up so many different ways to find it
all I searched was "andrew callaghan npr" and it was the first result 😂
@@jaredneff5189 he changed the title since 4 hours ago bud
the best part of this interview is that when she starts the Hunter S Thompson bit near the end Andrew compliments her. regardless of how the first half of the interview went he still buys in and gives her respect for finding the right lane.
Great interview. Andrew is really good at letting people play into their own ideological blind spots so they are blazingly clear to the viewer, even in this interview
Her hostility is putting Andrew visibly off and that says enough, hostility doesn't get you answers.
