Well I guess it's true, Wikipedia is not a reliable source of information. It was a major hit world wide in the 90's and an inspiration to many future women singers. I loved it then and even more 30 years later🥰
Critics are a terrible place to get opinions about music. It's their job to nitpick away at anything until they've chewed all the enjoyment off the bones of it... that's why they're called "critics". This song was widely enjoyed by the music listening public as I recall.
I usually listen to metal, but I was a kid in the 90's when this was all over the place, so "What's Up" has a permanent nostalgia corner in my brain, and is definitely one of my favorite songs to sing in the shower.
I was a teen when this song hit the charts so this brings back a lot of memories. Here in Sweden this song was played everywhere all the time, it's a real 90's icon as far as songs go.
With 1.3 Billion views, one should come to the conclusion that this song is a timeless classic, and will be enjoyed by future generations long after we are gone, and as long as there are folks around to hear it...It's called STAYING POWER!!

A long while ago I went back as an adult student to finish High School(I'm Australian, so our school levels are different to yours). I chose music as one of the subjects, and this was one of the songs we chose to play at the end of year performance, I played the rhythm guitar part of all the songs(the others songs were Under The Bridge and Two Princes). The guy playing the lead guitar was super talented in my opinion he could hear a song once and play it perfectly. That was 20 years ago, every now & then I hear a song I like & he gladly helps me learn how to play it
I think 4 Non Blondes - What's Up video is my favorite pop video. So is a toss up between Diana Damrau's Queen of the Night aria video and this for top all-time.
I actually have a top hat somewhere, but sadly no gold sash ring for it. I'd never heard this original version before, and I have a new appreciation for this song. OMG I just realized how old I am xD I own the cassette, yes, there weren't or barely CDs at the time, I knew (know?) all of the album songs back to back note by note. I was 13 :_) cool. Great group. Outstanding song. Although it seems like you are afraid to use any grit to your voice. I’ve noticed it in a few videos, but it didn’t strike me until now. Don’t be afraid to let go. Yeah, afterwards give the chords a little rest but don’t be afraid to power vocal. Just a tidbit of advice that I’ve learned over the years of singing. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the way you used the higher tone, but I’m a traditionalist type singer. Most times, when going a different route in the range doesn’t work out, but when you sang it without the grit, it DID sound good, but it lost the punch, if that makes sense. Love your videos, keep ‘em coming.
