For 40 years, since an eighteen year old country boy heading to the Big Smoke listening to Whistling Down the Wind on a copied cassette in a cheap Walkman, I have loved ya Tom. And though that love remains unrequited I love ya now as I did then. Thanks for the greatest music of all time.
As a European watching non-Americans taking cheap shots at the US on account of their presidents or big assed celebs - let's not deny that that culture gave us Tom.
I love the references to Missouri in your material. Lot's of great tracks on Orphans. Some of my other favorites (subjective) from Orphans are "Fannin Street", "Never Let Go", "Widow's Grove", "Long Way Home" ...
I'll bet You 2 Nickels and And some old shoe Laces that You And Peter Gabriel can find your selves in the same places this Fall while Gabriel tours the USA . If the Two of You Could write a Song together it Would be a Marvelous Day.. ❤️ Tom Waits ❤️ Peter Gabriel 🤙
Great song. Great artist. Weird pic of Tom for the RUclips cover of this video. Waits looks like Popeye wailing away on his guitar. There's probably some bourbon in that spinach.
I don't quite know why he insists on singing like this live so much. This song sounds way better the way it was recorded. It's not his natural range, and you can see him straining. I don't know. It has its place on a lot of songs, but not necessarily all of them, imo.
I don't quite know why people question why artists do what they do. I'm not attacking you, but the fact remains: he chose to sing this song that way, and only him (and maybe his wife/friends) know. Who are we to question why the faceless, nameless woman dances topless across the street at midnight? Who are we to wonder why Bill Burroughs would cover a typewriter in paint and blow shotgun rounds at it on a canvas? I prefer the album version, too, but... Artists like Tom have always done what they did "just because." Maybe he just felt like it this particular night.

In Tom We Trust. 🍺🗿
Tom Waits often reminds us most of us are closer to the bottom than the top of the world. What an extraordinary song.

Tom takes you with him on a journey. 🚶🏽♂️
One of his best songs lyrically. Great performance. Thanks for the upload.

The only musician left who has a soul. His voice is fucked but his soul is perfect and thats why I love him.
