His edgework is immaculate -- you can watch him load up his left leg and just turns his edge out of nowhere. He takes what little momentum he had skating backward and puts it all into a quick little cut in an instant. This guy's unreal.
@@dnasty312 There's a HUGE difference between that hit and this one. Stevens loaded up and made a long distance run on Karyia, where as Makar loaded up and made what looked like an incoming check from Staal, into a absolutely sickening display of power in the form of a reverse check from a almost stationary position. Makar was pretty much going backwards slowly when he loaded up and drilled Staal.

Simply one of the Best in the league. Here in Vancouver we used to compare Quinn Hughes to him. The comparisons have stopped now their focus is all time club great.

@@RParmable I’m a Vancouver fan too. I’d take Makar any day of the week over Huggy. I think Huggy’s needs a couple more years to round out his game and then he could be a close comparison.

About 25 seconds earlier Staal had Makar lined up and launch to hit Makar while he was making a pass out of the defensive zone, Makar saw it last half second and did a spin so he didn't get the blunt of Staal's hit. On that same shift as Staal is bringing the puck back into Colorado's zone, that's when Makar unleashed his lethal shoulder hit. I don't know what Staal was thinking, you tried to do that same big hit on Makar just seconds earlier and your not prepared that he might do it back to you. As far as Aho and that other players wanting a piece of Makar, I guess they weren't following the puck, if they did then they would have seen that it was Staal that wanted the big hit first. If you guys don't believe me, go watch that whole shift which was at 10:41 minutes left in the 3rd period.

@@itstomis nah but thats a pretty common defenseman move, if u chip the puck past him the dman has to choose to finish the hit or go for the puck. staal had no teammates to pick up the dump so makar could let his teammate get it and finish the hit

I'll go ahead and play devil's advocate for the Hurricanes who wanted a piece of Makar as well as the announcers who were annoyed with that fact: Makar does appear to get the shoulder on a tiny bit of Staal's chin. That being said, there is ZERO chance he was trying to make that the principle point of contact, he just leveled him with a solid body check, shoulder (mostly) to chest. Great hit, hate to see everyone try to gang up on Makar for making a big hit, but that's commonplace in the NHL today.

If only more people out there would have a good measured take like your's here. Everything you said was spot on. Only quibble would be the part about going after Makar, since there was that tiny bit to the chin and Staal got hurt. So I can see the Canes wanting to respond because of those two things.

Makar is a hockey player that doesn't comes along too often. He has so much talent, to be able to watch his game is amazing. The Avs also drafted his brother 'Taylor Makar'... that would be something if his hockey talent is the same. Right now Taylor is at UMASS.
