- We all have a thread that drew us to quilting. We sat down with Carrie a quilter and maker from California, to hear about her quilting journey: how she got started, what she likes to make and give, and why quilting has remained such a big part of her life.
Every quilt has a story, and so does every quilter. We’re in love with them all. Does Carrie's story resonate with you? Share with us in the comments below.
We’re almost a million quilters strong in this community. And we’re stronger still when we share with each other.

I just love these “why I quilt” stories, I found out about Missouri Star from a quilting novel and the character went on a trip to Missouri Star and I googled it and then I called my daughter that lives in Missouri and quilts but didn’t know about it. I lived in Washington State but drove to my daughters house and we went to Missouri Star. I was in Heaven. Jenny is so wonderful as a teacher, and positive. I can watch her and stop when I need to and then start up again. I spent 2020 summer sewing all the quilts Jenny showed us. I loved it, it was the best summer ever.
I love love love these videos “why I quilt”. I find them so moving - hearing other people’s stories of how they have found their passion for quilting. Please do more . Thank you
These shorts are amazing! I love hearing from these ladies about why they quilt. I feel they have some of the same feelings about quilting as I do. Keep them coming!
Carrie- thank you for sharing. I sensed a common bond. I think one of the main reasons I quilt is because I like to give to others too.
Love this interview. Been quilting since 2009 (just started back after a five year hiatus). I like the quiet time between me and my fabric. My favorite part? It’s cutting - that’s when I can fully enjoy the tactile quality of the fabrics I’ve chosen. I don’t keep most of my projects. I own maybe four quilts. For me quilting is a gift to pay forward. I get the gift of peace and joy from the creative process; the recipients get the gift of joy from using the quilt and knowing someone created something just for them.
I have watched all of your short videos about why each person quilts. I have enjoyed this one the most❤️ I could relate to Carrie’s experiences and her joys of quilting. I joined a quilt guild 6 years ago after seeing their quilts on display in our local art center. I have since sewn 50 quilts and hundreds of smaller quilt projects. The creative outlet and joy from others when I share what I made makes me happy. 😊
Really enjoy hearing these stories. There really is common thread between quilters!!
Keep going with this series!
I really enjoy these videos. I'm like yes, yes, yes.
Beautiful stories Carrie 👏🏼. It was a pleasure meeting you at the Doan’s Girl Retreat 2024 ❤ -Mary
I love piecing the tops. I also love to 😊bind them😊
I can relate to Carrie. I had HomeEck in High School. Miss Hill made her own wedding dress and I was so impressed, sewing stuck with me and developed into quilting. Love it. Thank you Miss Hill and thank you MSQC for all you contribute to us quilters. Thank you Carrie for your story. ❤
My sewing teacher in Jr high had us sew a gym bag used mine as an example of what not to do, well I’m quilting for about 25 years.
These are just wonderful. Thanks for doing this😊
I love hand quilting. It's therapy for me. Don't know why or how. But I do machine quilt since it's faster but when I have time, I do hand quilt.
Hi Carrie. I was glad to see your post. I live in Standish, CA so you are right in my backyard 😊. It is so nice to see someone so close to my home. Happy quilting ❤
Thank you for sharing, for others and quilting!
Hi Carrie, you could be telling my story. Thank you so much for sharing. I don’t do the glass thing but everything else is me, too!😊
Awesome story. So true, quilters are awesome people too!
Your stoy is so similar to mine, I've never saw before in my life and in 2005 the ladies from my church invited me to tie quilts, later on we lost a few of our senior ladies and I was asked to sew squares, I borrowed a sewing machine and then I bought my own, and this new hobby became an addiction. Now I own my quilter machine, serger, embrodery machine, I am like you love to piece and create the tops. It is such a rewarding and relaxing for me. Donate many to the cancer place to one of our local hospital.
Yea, Carrie!!!
Carrie and I are kindred spirits - I too can not stand handwork, do all my bindings by machine and I have a long-arm (with stacks of tops waiting to be quilted).
I too have been enjoying the “why I quilt “ series. On suggestion, perhaps turn down the background music, it’s a bit distracting at times. Otherwise please continue this series.
Amen
Carrie, I love the quilt hanging behind you. So pretty! The colors and pattern are so beautiful. Do you know the name of the pattern? Can anyone help me with the name of the block, although I doubt I could get the colors and setting to look as beautiful without a pattern??
It's Misty's "Wanderlust" quilt from a Triple Play tutorial from 6-18-2021.
@@sherylp.9570 thank you so much. I really appreciate your help. It was driving me crazy. You know how it is when you just love a certain pattern. So kind of you to let me know. I ordered it from MSQC. Thank you

You are welcome. I love that quilt, too, so I searched high and low for the name of it. I hope you have lots of fun making your quilt. Have a beautiful day! 💕
On another note - I realise from watching this - that (as a beginner to quilting ) I should be making a catalogue of the quilts as a make them. Can anyone advise me? Is there a video? So many thanks
I’ve never kept a record but one of the ladies who used to be in my group took a picture of each completed quilt. She would print it out & on the back she would write the details (pattern, when made, who it was for, anything else of note) & then she put the picture in a clear protector in a 3 ring binder. Sometimes she put a sample of the fabrics in there too. That works if you have space for the binders. I’m sure you could do something similar on your computer too.
I keep a small binder with the names of the patterns I make, the fabric I use and who I make it for. Plus I take pictures front and back and the labels
What is so wrong with using the sewing machine to sew on the binding?
Someone really needs to pay attention to the spelling in the printed questions.
