This is such an amazing experiment. It's so interesting how your average rating seems inversely proportional to the reading goal number. Certainly food for thought for me! ❤ Happy to be your 400th subscriber! Great video, such an interesting concept, thank you for sharing. 😊
I love the reflections on this video! I have always loved reading and when I went to uni I felt like I had to read the classics only (because that was what I was studying at the moment) and I felt that I lost interest in reading along the way. Last year I decided to read only TikTok books to reconnect with bookshops since it became an alien space for me seeing the shelves full of books I didn't know. It was good to know what people are reading nowadays and it gave me perspective: I started to love the classics again because it was no longer a burden to read them and now I could appreciate how beautifully written they are. Last December I deleted my social media and this year was incredible, I had so much time to read! I've never set reading goals, I don't like the pressure of reading something I decided in ten minutes in January you know? I like to choose books based on my mood at the time, so I leave a bunch of books on my Kindle that sparked my interest. Last month I started to frequent my local library for recommendations outside BookTube and I found some gems, definitely a habit to keep in the upcoming year.
I'm so happy to hear that you've found a way to make reading the most enjoyable for you! I totally agree it never hurts to have a big collection of books/ebooks to choose from, I can also be a big mood reader ☺️
My reading goal on GR has been set at 100 for the past few years (which is normally a number I hit pretty easily), but after struggling with a reading slump for a good chunk of 2024, I’ve been contemplating dropping it to a 1 for next year. As a bookseller, I already have some pressure to read, I don’t think I want to have a number hanging over me as an additional stressor! I really appreciate your reflections here - definitely given me some food for thought! Thank you!
I gave myself a pretty low number this year (25) and I was so stressed out, I decided here on out, I’m not doing reading challenges anymore 😂 the stress for some unknown reason started becoming anxiety inducing about two years ago.
I've set a reading goal (50/yr) for the last 4/5 years. I really enjoy it cause it's an achieveable goal. I thought about increasing the goal but I think that would be about trying to be a certain kind of person rather than pure enjoyment. If I read more than 50 fine, reading 50 is cool, reading less is fine. From personal experience trying to make myself read every day or read faster or read "popular" books ruins how much I enjoy reading so I sacked all that stuff off. I do like to try and read widely though so love a good recommendation and do get a few from social media or Goodreads. Watching your video made me think about how I rate books. In terms of rating, a book can only get more that 4 stars if I would re-read it. Love that the Storygraph lets us do the quarter ratings :). I think reading goals and rating systems should serve you as the reader. Sounds like you've figured out what works for you which is really cool! Happy reading!
I love this insight! It's so cool to hear how each of us approach our reading goal setting differently and how we find ways to make things work for ourselves 🙂
Since I got back into reading, I’ve increased my yearly goal by 10 books each year until it reaches something insurmountable (only possible unless all I’m doing is reading). This year I set it at 20 so next year it will be 30. When I ultimately reach that limit, it would be amazing if I hit it but there is no pressure in reading because I don’t start the year thinking I’m going to hit it anyway
right like I read 22 books this year and my goal was 25… this is the most I’ve read in a given year possibly ever? but guess what I’m focused on 😒 the fact that I didn’t hit my goal. I’m not gonna lie I also get bitter sometimes when I see what kinds of books I’m reading compared to others … like yeah no wonder I only read 22 compared to some of my peers reading 50 when their books are short and smut. I’m over here reading classics that are 600 pages long, why do they count the same 😂 thanks for coming to my TED Talk
love the TED Talk LOL - I 100% agree! It's hard not to compare ourselves with others, but we have to realize we all have completely different reading habits and preferences 😊
Instead of doing challenges I just set a yearly goal. This year I wanted to read more than 15 books, which I did. Also I started counting every book besides novels, because I do read a lot of manga, comics and so on. Challenges also stress me out.
I did something similar this year! I set a 1 book goal on GR and I ended up reading less than usual, but I really enjoyed the books I did read. And I didn't feel the need to add short books or even graphic novels I'm not particularly interested in reading, just because they're easier and faster reads. What blogs/websites do you go to for recommendations? I'm moving away from TikTok/Instagram and I feel a bit lost.
I would recommend a few different places! Lithub, literature-map, and there are even a few Reddit subs that have niche recommendations depending on your style 🙂
reading targets stress me out!! 🤯
Ditto

It's definitely SO different when reading is part of the job! I found the 1 book reading target helped me so much with my reading slumps this year. 😊

That was my spot last year as well! I feel very alleviated by my new 1 book reading goal, so I hope you can get the same out of it 😅

That's a fun goal to set for yourself and it's great that you don't feel pressured by reaching that final number!
I agree. Reading Bingo killed my reading this year, I only read half of what I normally do (400ish instead of 800ish).

I totally agree! Mangas/comics/graphic novels ARE reading so they should definitely count towards any targets :)
