I do too! I found I'd only write in my journal when I was really upset or was having issues in my relationships. Reading them years later was rough, it made it seem like I had no joy in my life. I'm trying to be better to write more broadly.

I had this exact same experience with all my previous journals. Normally I don’t even go back to read them because I only used them to hold space for negative moments or emotions. After revisiting my previous journal I realized that there was so much about past self that went undocumented. My music preferences changed, fashion style, what I looked like, my fav foods, etc. I started a new journal last month and it has a lot more fun concepts. I added pictures of myself, stickers, yugioh cards, and other fun items just lying around in my room. It’s made journaling a lot more fun and now I feel like I’m actually documenting myself in my totality versus just venting in black and white ink. Coming across this video feels like perfect timing!

After 50 years of journaling, I couldn't agree more! A couple other things: Always use waterproof ink to write with. Yes, I always dated the back of each journal when I started and when I finished, but I also write the time, because sometimes I write several times a day in my journal.
Don't feel so bad about writing the negative stuff more. I did that on purpose. Got all my negativity off my back into my journals so I could enjoy fun. When having fun, no need to write much... I was too busy!
Don't pressure yourself to write every day, in my opinion. But do write often, when you feel like it. Hope this helps.

I am almost 57 years old. I have kept journals since I was in 8th grade! I have around 90 of them! There are times I have missed for months writing in them and I regret that so much. I may go back and somehow put in all the photos and memorabilia from my life. I have mostly used composition books and decorate the covers. I do add decorations, photos, washi tape and all kinds of memorabilia now.

I used to avoid journaling about current events, because I didn't want anything too political in my journals. But when I wanted to go back and see what I thought on the day of 911, for example, I could not find much. So now, I make note of my thoughts on current events (when I do have strong thoughts or feelings).

For me, my regret is ripping out pages. When I was younger, there were times I looked back on entries and felt so embarrassed about what I had written that I ripped out the page 😭😭 I never wanted the things written there to see the light of day. Now I really regret doing that because although no one will ever see it, I won’t either 😔

Same here! I have a whole notebook full of the "uglies" from my childhood that I totally destroyed and threw away about 20 years ago. I wish I had not... But then also remember I chose that back then and I should just honor that choice and the child I was back then. And maybe the uglies from back then would just make me sad and that's fine?! Maybe that's why now I journal the good and the bad, always, and almost never cover up/rip out pages! ;)

I have long ago noticed whenever I re-read my old journals, I find the little details of everyday life much, much more interesting than whatever I was feeling or thinking of at that time. I began to weary of re-reading long, interminable, repetitive reflections about myself, my life, problems, worries etc in my old diaries.
Now, I keep private reflections to a minimum. I write more about the happy events in my life, little vignettes, conversations, jokes, music, popular movies, news, politics, what I ate, descriptions of my outfit, trending hashtags on social media. They are more fun to revisit and give me a clearer picture of what my life was like, what's going on in the world outside of myself.

I've already regretted not dating every entry. When I started journaling, decades ago, it was sparse. I'd have an entry and then five, six, eighteen months later, I'd put in another. I could tell the time was different by my handwriting. Then, I would put the month and day and, like you, wonder what year. Over time, my journaling became more consistent, but boring.
With all the tips you shared, you've set me up to have a more productive and fulfilling journaling experience for 2025. Thank you!

I wrote about what happened or how I felt, but rarely did I write about how I felt about what happened. I also like the practice of labeling my journal entries with what I’m eating, watching, reading, and listening to.

I'm 21 years old and started journalling at 19. I'm glad I've been doing most of the things mentioned in the video since the beginning. I don't really like journalling everyday because it makes journalling feel more like a chore instead of a hobby, so probably won't be doing this, but for this year I'll start writing more often, adding more photos and drawings and detailed descriptions of the people I mention. Great advice 😊

I agree so much with you, especially about writing more often, writing happy moments, adding photos, and including everyday details. I've been keeping journals for about 15 years now, and this year I also realized I wanted to change some things about how I journal. That is why I've decided to buy a daily planner that I will use as a journal, and my goal is to write one entry every day, even if nothing very exciting happened. It's also pocket size, so I can take it with me everywhere! That will by kind of a daily log, and then I also plan to keep a separate journal, for just brain dumping and writing on anything that comes to mind. I think it's beneficial to have separate journals intended for a specific purpose.
I believe this new system will help me change my journaling habits into something I consider better, and my future self will thank me when she is reading them! 🌟

I also think I may start doing favorites pages... I've seen other people do those but have never done one... but 5 years from now i won't remember what my favorite song at the moment is and it'd be fun to look back and see what i was listening to! Also, as a tip from a person who likes to journal - if you have the means, purchasing a mini printer and using stick photo is something you could do instead of the usual hassle with printing out photos. It's cleaner when sticking on paper and doesn't take a lot of space (I use photo sizes 2x3 inches.) There are also cameras that print instantly using this photo size like the ivy instant camera that lets you insert these 'sticky photos.' It is a bit more expensive though to buy the printable sticker paper online than it would be to print the photo at walgreens or something and then use tape or glue. Anyway, hopes this help!

The top takeaway from this video is that journaling is a powerful tool for self-reflection and growth, and that it's never too late to start journaling.
The video highlights the importance of capturing:
Your true emotions and thoughts: Don't just write about schedules and to-do lists, but also explore your feelings and dreams. (4:07-4:34)
Everyday details: Small things like what you ate or the weather can bring back vivid memories later. (9:14-9:38)
Happy moments: Don't just focus on hard times; document the good moments in your life as well. (5:35-6:25)
The speaker encourages viewers to journal regularly, even for just a few minutes each day, to make it a habit of self-reflection and personal growth. (9:41-10:13)

how is journal different from a diary? how often do you write?

I consider journal as my diary and write everything I want to write in journals. I write many times a day and always a journal book is with me. 💕

The speaker suggests using colored pens to add variety and highlight important moments in your journal. (2:32-3:05)
Here's why color can make a difference:
Adds visual interest: Black ink can become monotonous, while colored pens can bring life to your pages.
Highlights important events: You can use different colors to mark significant memories, emotions, or even different themes within your journal.
Adds a personal touch: Choosing colors that resonate with you can make your journal more unique and expressive.
The speaker isn't advocating for a rainbow of colors, just a few to break up the monotony and create visual interest. (2:55-3:05)

I m going to start journalling seriously from 2025. I will be 25yrs old. And i want to start this jubilee new. But i m worried abt my family reading my journals prematurely or secretly or before my death.
Its like yeah i m honest but not ant family who r main source of my problems.
So i feel like using ipad will be safer. But then i cant use it everywhere.
Very small pocket notebooks i dont like. I go throught them like 1 a week
Idk what to do. I want soemthing on me all time. Small enough to carry everywhere. But has infinite space. Can do colourful ink and photos too.
    Goodnotes on iphone?
    Can it use apple pencil?

Thank you for sharing. Ultimately my life is key and the most precious and my life is the only thing I can control. So, I would not worry too much about anyone seeing my journals. I did have same worries, but now I say ‘so what?’. The journey to find power within me is powerful than anything else outside. Let’s enjoy every step of our journey. 🙏

@ u r right. So what? I mean what they gonna do? Know abt me. Scold me maybe. Ask me. Ask me to leave it. If anything if they love me they might even give advice.

I understand your worry about your family reading your journal if they are the main source of your problems. If you write about your problems with them and they read it, it might cause even more problems. You can use your phone to keep a journal instead, but then you might only be able to type but you can put a password on the notes so only you can read it. And you can also add pictures and different colors text to the notes.

@ yeah i think phone will be best. But then there is no guarantee abt long term keeping. It might get deleted or wiped off. So... idk if i should even bother. Maybe something little whenever i like for fun. Idk. I reslly want to but odds are against me

@@Thisismebutme2.0 That is true. You could save your notes on a USB flash drive at some point, but I'm not sure if you can password protect it so that your family can't read it. But it might be your best option.
