are reading challenges ruining reading? & the rise of book social media apps
Просмотров 3 тыс.Месяц назад
I spent the last year experimenting by not setting a reading target. This trial run took an interesting turn, proving some of my initial guesses as to what would happen with my reading habits, while disproving many of them too. Hope you enjoy this little look into how recent trends to use book tracking social media apps and the growth in various 'reading challenges' may or may not be impacting ...

I also don't like Murakami for the same reason. Tbf I haven't read him since I was 16 (I'm 26 now) but the way he wrote about female characters just made me so uncomfortable, I've never felt the desire to pick up any of his books again.
Thank you for including what aspects of ghibli you brought into your book Recs and which movies they reminded you of! Short and sweet video!
my pick for a popular book that was SUCH. a letdown for me was priory 😭😭 my hopes were so high and it was so “go on girl give us nothing” the whole time ugh lol
Ghibli book recs! What a great idea! I picked books I'd love to see as Ghibli films: - Unraveller by Frances Hardinge. Dark fairy tale vibes, strong male-female friendship (Ghibli does that really well and I respect that they don't always go for romance), industrial human world besides magical wilderness full of fantastic spirits like in Princess Mononoke. Main characters are more like San or the boy from The Boy and The Heron than typical Ghilbi protagonists. - Over The Wall by Peter Wartman. To save her brother, a girl goes to a ruined city haunted by demons; Spirited Away parallels. Would translate well into Ghibli visuals, esp. the ruins and woods. Again, grumpier than typical protagonist but it works. - A Market of Dreams and Destiny by Trip Galey. Historical romance + Goblin Market + workers rights. I think Ghibli could handle the mix of folkloric fantasy and steampunk well and the goblin market has big Spirited Away energy, including tricks and deals. - The Deep and Dark Blue by Niki Smith. Witchy magic, coming-of-age story, strong female characters. Dark in places like The Boy and The Heron, but main girl character very sweet. Some subtle anti-war messages like many Ghibli films. - The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag. Seaside setting, ocean magic, contemporary romance/coming-of-age, and environmental themes (also common in Ghilbi films). Like a YA lesbians version of Ponyo. - Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen by Hiromi Sato. The main series is already getting an anime by another studio, but it would be cool if Ghibli adapted this food-focused spinoff. It's super cozy, focused on found family and witchy kitchen magic, and Ghibli food is amazing!
i'm so glad you brought up the military glamorization in tokyo ever after. it was so weird to read that part.
I was going to 1000 % say "A Psalm for the Wild Built" was a spectacular style Ghibli experience instantly in my mind. The second book "A prayer for the Crown shy " is even better as journey really takes off in this story too. The pace and flow of this book is a major breath of fresh air in comparison to lots of other works out there. Further embracing that Hopepunk aesthetic of a bright future rising out of a once dark period of time was an awesome positive change of pace too.
I fear I may never pick up a Murakami book at this point based on all I've heard about him objectifying women
Thank you for this video and for the book recommendations! I noted them down and will seek them at my local library/bookstore."The cat who saved books" by Sosuke Natsukawa is a book I currently read and it definitely gives me Ghibli vibes, it feels simple, magical and wholesome :) It reminds me a little bit of "The Cat returns".
I totally agree about one hundred years of solitude i got the ick even though i understand it's old. the writing is indeed beautiful though and i gave it a 3. I also watched the netflix show and they adapted half of the book (2nd season is already announced) and they adapted everything faithful, i gotta say i also got the ick from certain things (same things that were bad in the book), but i can't deny that it's a very beautiful adaptation like they really did the book justice. Cast was on point and cinematography was fantastic
Good to know! I also had similar feelings about the book. I wanted to like it so much!! 😭
let's be haters today 🤪
I'm also really excited for Mickey17 and Wicked: For Good!
What mic do you use?
This is an obvious comment but if you haven't read the books some Ghibli movies took inspiration from, GO AND DO IT, THERY ARE SO BEAUTIFUL
Literally ran to this video to mention Legends & Lattes and Bookshops & Bone dust but you beat me to it!
Still need to read bookshops & bone dust, very excited to get to it!!
time for my annual derry girls rewatch 🙃
Another "Ghibli-esque" novel that I really enjoyed was "A Thousand Steps Into Night" by Traci Chee. It's such a good read full of adventure, spirits, and magic.
i needed this last year lol. i did a ghibli reading challenge in 2024 and i found a couple movies that just couldn’t match the vibe
Thank you so much!! So glad this showed up on my feed. It's hard to find any form of media that has the same effect as the Ghibli films, so I'm looking foreword to reading every single one of these
Hope you find something from this list with the Ghibli element you're looking for! 🙂
The Spellshop
These are great recommendations! I'll be adding them to my tbr 💗
Glad you found some new titles to try ☺️
Thank youu for this video ! I am recommending you also The Kiki's delivery service 6 books series by Eiko kadono. These are the books that inspired the movie and God how deeply and gently and magucally moving and soothing and reassuring they are. I also recommend you Temple Alley Summer by Sachiko Kashiwaba. It is the book that very broadly and freely was the inspiration for Spirited Away. Honestly all Kashiwaba's books feel like a Ghibli 🥰🥰🥰 There is also, What you are loooking for is in the library by Michiko Aoyama.
I loved What you are looking for is in the library! Also this is my first time learning that Kiki's delivery service came from a book series, will be checking it out 😅
Water Moon by Sanantha Sotto Yambao gives me Spirited Away vibes. At first, it's a bright and amazing fantasy world like the one Chihiro finds, but when you look closer, you see the darkness beneath.
Your description is everything! I've seen this book recommended so many times in the comments so I definitely need to get on it
Obviously read howls moving castle, my best ghibli recc 🫡
Que vídeo lindo ❤ adorei
Love all of these except for T. J Klune🫣 It's not talked about much but his books are heavily criticised by Indigenous people of Canada and America because he repurposes the cultural gen*cide of many different tribes (look up Sixties Scoop) for his novel House in the Cerulean Sea... As well as exploiting the history of residential schools in general (he has admitted to this in a RUclips video). So to everyone going to pick up his books, please rethink giving money to him❤
As someone who lives in Canada myself, I'm really thankful you brought up this alternative angle to view the story. I can 100% see how this parallels the horrible residential school history and I will definitely be looking into what the Indigenous communities are discussing around this author!
I’ve been looking for some books with this vibe! Thank you!
Hope you enjoy!!
lonely castle in the mirror as well
I highly recommend Where the Dark Stands Still! It made me feel the ghibli vibes so strong
This is a new book suggestion for me, first time hearing about it and excited to look more into it! Thanks for the rec ☺️
5:24 a word of caution with this one, it’s got quite a bit more explicit and sexual content then anyone under 18 should be reading. I personally enjoy the lack of sexual content in Miyazaki’s works so I was definitely shocked when I started reading juniper and thorn given how it’s been associated with studio ghibli fans.
So true! Thank you for bringing this up, I need to get better at nothing down some sensitive content in my book recommendations!
Oooh thank you for making this! Lots of books to add to my reading list! I'd also like to recommend the Crestomanci Chronicles, which were also written by Diana Wynne Jones. They have big ghibli vibes as well! I'd love to find more books that have the Ghibli vibes but also have big environmentalist messages, which is prevalent in his work. I'm going to poke through the comments for more books. Thanks for the recs! I can't wait to dig in!
Definitely need to check out Diana Wynne Jones' writing! Thanks for the additional recs ☺️
im a hugeee sucker for cozy stuffs esp slice of life but i haven't been able to discover new things to consume so this is nice! you also kinda reminded me of yunjin hehe
yay hope you end up enjoying some of these suggestions 💕 and aw that's a high compliment thank you!!
the winternight series by katherine arden <3
The Bear and the Nightingale has been on my tbr for so long! Hope I can get to it soon 🙂
@@2youstories yes!! its brilliant =-)
Thank you so much for your recommendations
My recommendation is the Anne of Green gables book series by L.M. Montgomery, there aren’t any fantasy themes but it checked all the other boxes for what is a studio ghibi book! 😊❤
Obsessed with Anne of Green Gables! I have yet to finish the whole series, but growing up in Canada meant the first book was almost a mandatory childhood read 😂
Thank you for this, I hope there will be part 2 cause I want to know what books give Ponyo and When Marnie Was There vibes
Part two is definitely in the works! Once I finally catch up on all the Ghibli movies haha 🙂
I would really love to hear your recommendation for the Cat Returns 😊
It's still on my watchlist!! Will definitely make a part 2 when I have some more movies in my repertoire ☺️
I need a recommendation for “ from up on poppy hill” and “whisper of the heart” 🫶🏻🫶🏻 they’re so good!!
Will need to finish my Ghibli movie watches and follow up with a part two... 👀☺️
Thank you so much for these recommendations. My two favorite topics are also books and ghibli! ❤ The house on the cerulean sea is 10/10. I fell in love with each character (especially Lucy hehe)! I just downloaded Juniper & Thorn on my Kindle (spirited away and Mononoke are my favorites!) I will definitely be reading the others as well. Thank you so much again! ❤
So glad to hear that you found a new book to try from this video! Hope you enjoy it ☺️
@ thank you so much! ❤️
if anyone's looking for a sapphic ya fantasy with a romance like the one in howl's moving castle i would highly highly recommend the clem & wist series by hiyodori (specifically the prequel). the rest of the series is adult and gets stranger and more grotesque with each book but the prequel specifically is very whimsical and full of wonder and reminds me a lot of studio ghibli movies!
This is my first time hearing of this series! Thanks for the recommendation ☺️
I love that you included "Anne with an E" it's so so underrated 🌷
Yessss a fellow Anne with an E appreciator 😊 you have taste
This was the perfect video to start my day! My only problem is that I already read some of the books you mentioned 😂. But there are still a few more to explore😌
Glad you still found some new books to try, clearly we have similar reading taste haha 🙂
YES i will never shut up about The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches!!!!
All Becky Chambers books are my comfort books ❤ but I especially love the "monk & robot" novellas. All of her novels are heartwarming and make me feel like the future can be a better place
Omg I've been meaning to read A Psalm for the Wild Built for ages now. This is definitely gonna push me to check it out 💚
Honorable mention: Water Moon by Samantha Yambao ✨🌕
So many mentions of this book in the comments!! Clearly I need to check it out 😅
I love this video idea !!
Ahh thanks so much for watching
Six crimson cranes by elizabeth lim gives me a sort of spirited away vibe! I highly recommend it
I just read this at the end of 2024 and totally agree! Should have included in my list 😅
As a dog owner I felt that “please don’t bark” 😂
A daily battle 😂
That video started automatically and I stayed bec. of your voice. It's so agreable to listen to.
Haha that's so nice! Thanks for staying and watching ☺️
i love love loveeee palm springs 🤍
yessss it's too underrated imo
thank you
