The 2019 BMW X3 M40i is just out on the market, but it could have a few issues in it. Find out here all about the reliability outlook for the new X3 M40i. What's also nice about this is the 2018 BMW X3 is a very similar car and really has all the same issues, outlook, and recalls.
The recalls start with a rear brake issue, some rear lighting issues (again...rear), rear spoiler coming loose, an instrument panel issue, and lane assist. The 2018 and now 2019 have most of these recall issues, and you can get these fixed at your dealer for free if you're experiencing any of these.
Now moving on to the issues that are out there. This is a B-58 engine, and there has been crank bearing guide issues where they wear out early. You're more likely to find that on a manual transmission, so it's not a big issue with the X3 M40i.
Structurally and chassis-wise, the X3 is really strong and when I put it through some driving tests, I didn't hear any pops or cracks. The interior is great, and I can't find any glaring issues of the X3 M40i.
Overall, this is a great #bmw and I'm looking forward to driving and testing the #X3 #M40i some more.

My experience with BMW is. BMW doesn’t waist time on recalls like other companies do. As soon as something starts going wrong. They don’t let it get out of hand before they do something about it

The BMW X3 M40i is the best luxury vehicle on the market when compared to all the other classes and their prices target. I'm mindblown everyday by how I managed to do my homework and made a decision to get my X3 M40i, it is a "sleeper" sports SUV/SAV that puts a lot of cars to shame on the road. I have a feeling the X3 M40i is going to become a classic gem in the future for its performance and dependability.
They are wonderful drivers and I really enjoyed the time I had with it. Fast, luxurious, and sporty.
I am happy to hear an that… I’ve been searching for the “perfect” suv/sav for 2 years since I wasn’t in a rush. Looked between cayennes , x5s, xc90, GLEs. Multiple generations and didn’t like anything that was perfect… wasn’t looking at x3 a at all till I saw a random one in the parking lot. After some research it is the “perfect”.
I just put down my deposit for a certified used 2019 that is fully loaded...only 5048 miles and comes with the 2-year extended bumper-to-bumper (w/power train) warranty after the 4-year factory warranty runs out. Can't wait to test this beast out come this winter! Snow tires on order ;-)
I have mine; 2018 on Terra Brown, I love my X3 for daily driver. is practical, economical, well built and outstanding in safety overall. Now guys please be aware!!! Since it's a brand new model by BMW parts might be really hard to get or not available here in the States at all. Most of the parts come from Germany and Austria. and the ETA on each part is about 2-4 weeks!!! So don't crash please!!! now you know. overall I have it for a year with 11k miles. Zero issues.

The X3 is built in South Carolina. I had to have my exhaust replaced because it was making a rattling noise at certain RPMs and it took my dealership 3 days. Maybe I just got lucky.

The B58 engine is a safe powerhouse. That crank hub issue is only apperent on the S55 engines and possibly on the N55 as well. These are on the current M3, M5 and M2 competitions where the crank hub can fail resulting in a full engine rebuild/replacement.
The B58 has had no signs of its crank hub failing once so I'm not sure where he is getting this info from.
We have friends with the 2018 with no issues. We just got our 2020 model with idrive 7.0 with 285kw. Currently running the engine in before driving it hard.

I have a great X3 30i fully loaded 2018. Hasn’t missed a beat and a great versatile car. Replacing it this week with with a similarly equipped X3 M40i for that B58 experience.

@@richx9035 all my street knows me now : in sport plus mode when I go home , sorry limited to 30 km/h, put in 3rd speed .... always have to release the gas pedal . then POP POP POP , then pedestrians heads turns at me , what ca I do ? I am so sorry ....

@@prabeeshsidhu yes still have the X3 M40 and it has been excellent - good blend of practicality and performance. Had a problem with the starter motor - this was replaced under warranty otherwise hasn’t missed a beat.
Interesting video, what about the 2.0d fire issues?
None of these issues are very common. I've been reading the forums since the vehicle launched in late 2017 and some of these were seemingly one offs. The only issue more than a couple people have seen is the rear driveshaft vibration, but ours with 7k hasn't had it.

Absolutely spot on mate. I bought a 2018 M40i with 40K mileage and an ultimate package just last week from BMW Toronto and straightaway noticed the vibrations. Went back to the dealership and as it turned out they’re going to replace the rear driveshaft.
It’s a single owner leased so luckily in a very good condition both aesthetically and engine wise. I must admit, this new generation is fantastic to drive. The only thing that I don’t like about mine is that non sporty thin steering wheel.

2019 X3 30i MSport fully loaded with tech, Canadian spec, 15k no issues so far amazing SAV, got extended warranty just in case though
Informative review. I drove one recently. The iDrive wouldn’t pair with the iPhone & it took a BMW genius several tries to get it to work. With all these other problems discussed I’ll pass on this one 👎

Would love to add it to our garage, but after your helpful video and lots of other review sites, not sure it would be reliable enough. Previous Audi Q5 has had zero major issues and want that level reliability. Don’t think added performance is worth it if all it does is drive to the shop for repair.
Some of these recalls are ridiculous... spoilers falling off of a $60k car...? 🤦🏻♂️

The one problem, I have with my 2021 X3 M40i is finding tires for it. At often times, you have one choice and those are the OE RFT Bridgestone Alenza Bridgestone performance that cost upwards of $2800+ for a set of four

@@ECPP Wonder, why other manufacturers haven’t started making these sizes, so that prices will drop. Especially the size 245/40/21.
Its the 21 inch sizing. I know quite a few people that have downsized to a 20" wheel which in that size is cheaper and more tyres available.

what is the most reliable model year for X3? Can you do a video similar to the 3 series in which you pinpointed the engine a and model that you should go for if reliability is your concern.
I would x3 35i 2017 because it was the last of making that model
For a high-performance model, try not to always go around in blocks. They need a highway.

how is the maintenance cost? I am looking to buy the 2018. Is it a good buy? I have never had bmw before. So this will be my first.

I was seriously thinking of leasing this car. On top of the issues mentioned in the video, the service departments at my two local BMW dealers have poor reviews. I really like the looks of the X3, but I think I will pass.
If you buy a BMW, buy the last years model before the next re-design!
We bought the 2018 model X1 about 8 months ago. I think the X1 will get a re-design pretty soon, because they released the new 3 series this year. and the X1 is based on that.
So far we've had 0 problems.
Meh, I bought a 2014 M235i when it was a brand new model, second delivered in my city, zero issues 75,000km. Bought a 2018 X3 M40i, 7,000km later zero issues. They key is to buy vehicles where the engine has been around a couple years, other than that they are all the same.
@@prayformojo1117 keyword is no problems yet. Oil leaks will come and water pump will fail, these are guaranteed. Your m235 is reaching the issue after issue stage with that mileage.
It does not matter, buy last year model does not save you from the coming headaches. It will fail. And continue ue to fail.. I own one.

I got this car in February and I've put 8k miles on it so far. Its engine and transmission are absolutely amazing, a lot of fun in sport mode and decent mileage savings in eco pro mode. The only thing I can complain is the lane keeping assistance, 30% to 40% of time it doesn't work well and it's not stable when driving faster than 60 mph, it's way way way inferior than a Tesla; I guess BMW doesn't invest much on self-driving technologies and they have barriers for innovation from the inside.

My m40 18 had frequency humming coming through the steering wheel and cabin at 70-80 and upon coming to stop. Heard at least one other person with similar issue. My vehicle was just rear ended two nights ago and it is totally jacked up. Total bummer.
That sounds unfortunate. Do you like the drive experience of that car though ?
@@ECPP yes absolutely. Had a golf 7R stage 2 and this car with the dinan piggy back feels almost as fast. But that's what I expect given it's a SUV.
Hi. Can you tell me about the turbo 4cy engine on the X3. How long will turbo last? How much to replace or fix? What is longivity of turbo?
These don't sound so minor to me. Parts falling off the car is probably no big deal to you, but even someone following at a reasonable distance is going to get a hell of a surprise.

bro 2019 i got 30i I hear some crack from interior like you said, I have panoramic sunroofs(I sent to dealer twice they couldn’t fix it )and interior feels not tight enough the connect other part!

Had mine three months and 8000Km (2019 x3 M40i ultimate), nice solid car but with electronic issues. TPM will go off line on long trip and reset after 200 to 300 miles. Lights stay on after turning off vehicle (up to four hours parked in garage) and radio will not return to "presets". BMW have been absolutely no help.
Sounds like a few glitches for sure. The TPM is a common issue with all brands so unfortunately that is a PITA. The other stuff, hopefully does not develop into more.

Had a bmw with a n55 and had vcg leaks and thermostat problems. Will this be a problem with a new X3 m40i? Also is the spun bearing common. I heard about this researching bmws but don't if it pertains to X3 m40i.

@@Joe-eg7ml BMW consumes 0.5l to 1l per year, never had to refill oil , was made in dealer service . doing oil change every year or less because I am in quebec . if the oil is 20 or 30 for sure you are going to loose some

I have the 2018 model, and all I've noticed is A LOT of vibration during idle even with the 19 inch All Seasons...
You say at idle ? That means sitting so is it vibration while rolling or engine vibration while idling ? The one I drove was smooth on both counts. The 21 inch wheels were rigid but reasonable.
@@ECPP I meant like on red lights - I notice quite a bit more vibration coming through the steering wheel than other cars

Bought my 2018 X3 M40i with 18,000 miles, I now have 35,000 miles and no problems. Truly a fun daily driver.

@@prabeeshsidhu - I’m exactly at 45,300 miles. Just had an oil change, radiator fluid, and rear-brakes replaced(I’m a speed demon) which were all due and completed last month. Absolutely zero problems. Outstanding vehicle. And trust me, I make this car perform on a daily, I use the manual gear shifter. The B58 engine is amazing, you’re getting your money’s worth. I can literally sell my vehicle right now and get top dollar for it. It looks brand new because I’ve always had it touchless car-washed. The only issue I’ve had and keep having, is not with the vehicle, it’s with the damn dealer always trying to find something to sell me or supposedly that I need. Now they’re trying to sell me tires I can buy way cheaper outside of BMW. To be honest with you, I don’t trust them one bit. I always have my uncle check my car before I take it in because some of them are crooks. They tried getting me to replace a tiny hose when I went in for my very first inspection after the warranty expired. I knew they we lying so I declined and haven’t had a leak or any problem and that was 2 yrs. ago. Mind you, I’ve traveled very far. I’m dreaming of getting the X3M Competition soon. That’s my ultimate goal, I want it soo bad because if the M40i performs like this, I know the X3M Competition is a beast.
You're grouping recalls together that are not related. Some X3's had rear brake recall and rear spoiler recall. That's it.

Just bought x3m40i with 50k miles without a warranty because they are so reliable and simple. Simple straight 6 with 1 turbo and simple zf automatic. Stage 1 flash results in over 400whp.
The high mileage 2015 Macan turbos I looked at all made me nervous and required expensive warranties from terrible 3rd party companies that no mechanic shop wanted to deal with. V6 = two engine banks, massive oil leak issues, complicated pdk transmission with major know failures, air suspension, and requires dealing with untrustworthy warranty companies like integrity, etc. Unless you can get a $7-10,000 fidelity warranty through Porsche, the m40i makes more sense.

There is an issue with early 2018 models and rear output drive shafts due to tolerance stacking. Vibration in the wheel between 50-60mph. More info on X3 g01 forums.
Also steering feels like bump steering from time to time.
Fred Reitz mine spent 11 weeks plus 4 more days sitting at dealer in order to rectifying this vibration issue. After “new rear drive shafts” were brought in from Germany issue is now resolved. Those parts have exactly same part# but BMW has changed design - obviously engineering or design flaws were there.
@@seanlee9568 Yes I have only the right shaft waiting on the left from Germany. Clearly this is the fix.
Question for you, how is the steering on your X3 M40i? Sometimes mine felt loose but follows the crown of the road.
@@fredreitz7333 with sport+ mode, I do not feel lose steering. But agree with you that it sometimes following road crowns. I think this could be related with tight chassis & firm suspension set ups. Also low profile tyres on 21" wheels and staggering set up might be affecting this especially when you picking up the speed fast on 'normal - aka crappy' road conditions.
Since rear drive shaft replacement was performed, my unit drives a lot like "angry bird" in a good way. Lol
When boost is spooled in sport mode, this wants to do sling shot on the road. Madness car!
Sean Lee agree this car is fun. I specifically went for the 19” set up so it is all wheel sizes.
I think I am being hyper sensitive to it since the vibrations started. Just got it back from dealer who aligned it properly feels much better. Still
Sometimes follows crown of the road but think that is normal.
Suspension on this car is bumpy though, had a loaner x2 didn’t bump as much and my wife daily is an x1 same thing... not as bumpy.

We traded our 2018 at 33000 miles. Here's the catch. There has been an ongoing problem with vibration in the steering wheel while accelerating from 40 to 60 mph. There is a forum on the internet about the problem. We now have a 2021 but I think they have solved the problem in the older models.

Just confirms that you should never get new generation models. Complicated electronics is the bane of German cars. As for me, I'm going back to my Lamborghini, uhum, I mean my Lamborghini tractor.

Since I do my own maintenance, I can’t believe how often owners of European cars get ripped off on EVERYTHING! I ask for prices estimates just to see if I can keep a straight face while pretending to agree with their made up answers. you’ll get all different lies told to you. Like one guy told me the oil changes are so expensive because BMWs take sooo much oil. Idk how people believe that crap because a Honda accord takes an eighth of a quart less of oil and the most expensive oil costs 12$ a quart yet the oil change for the bmw is double the price. Don’t even get me started with brakes. Buy the best powerstop ones and they’ll be about equal to the brembos with way less dust. The worst one is probably tires, the best way to go is Michelin cross climate 2 not run flat. Run flats blow out twice as often while costing twice as much. Unless you’re in a 3rd world country where you’ll get kidnapped if you stop your car.
What about the timing chain issue they used to have on previous n20 2.0 turbo? The new B48 and B58 the chain is located in fire wall, BMW make it harder for maintenance and repair..so I guess anything happen you will have to take down the engine!
Those problems stopped after 2015.
6500 miles on my 2018 and there hasn’t been any issues other than people staring at me when I’m driving. Doesn’t matter what car you drive, they all have issues.

Talking about reliability of BMWs. Just saw on Facebook that some Estonian guy bought 7 series BMW for 122 000 € and was so unhappy with it. It had a huge problems all the time . Car was in service more then it was on roads. He printed some of the problems on his car and now driving like that . Why do you think that any fault leads to crashes? Strange. Go and put some miles on the car and come back. Under 500km and you’re trying to tell people everything about the car. Sheesh.

with all the quality issues i dont think this car will do 200k miles without costing a bomb to run..wonder where that extra cash for premium product goes to. Life is too short, wont want to waste time with defective stuff which should of been sorted during development. BMW keeps maintaining its defective components regardless of what owners complain anyways..
Read some reviews who are saying driving less than 20k and 0! Problems! Since when driving a brand new car 20k with 0 problems is something to brag about? Must be a bmw thing

Piece of junk! Quality of these 2020 are junk level. My 2020 broke down 3 weeks after I got it from dealership, leaking oil from defective gasket. Dealer can not even order right part yet. I am stuck with brand new 2020 expensive piece of junk.

Problems I've had with my (otherwise amazing) 2019 X3 M40i, demo lease at 4k mileage, now at 5k mileage:
1. Alarm went off while driving
2. Creaking in pano sunroof
3. Rear view camera didn't come on. Had to lock car, unlock then that fixed it
4. Trunk closed on me while putting groceries in car
5. Trunk has opened on me a couple of times, not sure if the key in my pocket clicked it
6. Carplay has not connected a few times.
Anyone else experience this?
