out of curiosity when in ground targeting mode could you fire a R27 at the target?
Yes and no.
It lets you fire the missile, but it doesn't lock (UI circles stay green, dont go red) and the missile doesn't track after firing it, so .... basically a very chonky unguided rocket ....
Similarly, the radar slaved seeker on the R-73 would look at the locked ground target, but wouldn't lock it to fire, even up close.
@TimsVariety could be funny to try to do some direct fire on some spaa with that

Really enjoyed this preview! Only gripe I have with this plane is that I kinda wanted the MiG-21-93 for the USSR tree that the Bison is based off of.
Id bet we'll see that eventually.

Man they really need to settle that, so many aircraft are missing the ground radar, it ends up making 1960+ planes not even any more advanced than an Il-28

IRL F-18s running a practice sortie without AWACS found these to be surprisingly dangerous since they're so small from the front and can shoot pretty far off bore IR missiles.
The Mig 21 Bison is like grabbing an old Volkswagen Bettle, janking out the old engine and put a V6 engine with 400HP.
V8, I've seen it done and it was amazing.

According to the real life lore, this aircraft was developed as a stopgap during the late 1980s when HAL Tejas was still not ready to make it's maiden flight. The MIG-21 Bison has ARH missiles and PD radar to boot. The most comparable aircraft to the MIG-21 Bison would be the Taiwanese AIDC F-5 2000, a F-5 variant with avionics, Sky Sword 2 ARH missiles and APG-67 radar taken from Indigenous Defense Fighter(The AIDC F-5 2000 program was discontinued due to the proliferation of second hand MIG-29, F-16 and F-18 in the global market).

Man, what a cool jet. Old third gens that have been upgraded to try and hang with fourth gens will always be so cool. The MiG 21 93, MiG 23 98, Mirage F1 2000, F5EM, etc..
I understand if they dont necessarily want to give a premium aircraft Fox 3's, but I do hope this gets its R77s, and is placed alongside stuff like the J8F :)

Saw a few Bisons from India at Red Flag at Nellis oh man……08-09 maybe. I didn’t know much about them at the time but the word was the accounted for themselves very very well during the two week exercise.

The devserver is usually a bit of a disaster, its just worse than usual this time.
making the "best" Mig-21 a premium vehicle seems like a very gaijin thing to do
There’s an option in the game settings you can un check called join sessions already in progress

Worth noting, you can't slave air to ground munitions to your ground targeting. May be a bug, but worth noting.
I believe the Kopyo-21 was already available as a pod for the SU-39
Correction, for the su39 it's the kopyo 25, I dont think there is much difference tho the number might just be a designation that the radar is adapted for a mig21 and su25

Looks like a subpar aircraft for me. For 12.0 it has: subpar radar, lacking performance, weaker radar missiles and only 4 hardpoints. R73 +hmd should give it some kills, but overall it doesn't have good enough kit to justify flying a 3rd gen plane against f16s. Considering that Britain only has f4junk as a competitor, i can probably see the reason this mig being competitive against one of the worst 11.3 premium, but nothing more

Hey Tim, of all the vehicles you did reviews on, which one surprised you the most when doing research on it?
If you mean its history and story from real life, probably the Soviet BI rocket fighter.
If you mean how it performs in War Thunder, that would be a prop aircraft that I finished, but haven't published, the review of (and I actually mentioned in the review that I was socked at how good it is).
the one thing this could use to make it truly an evil maxxed aircraft is the J-7E extended wings

Fun fact: you can lock ground vehicles with ur radar, and then launch R-27R at them. Although missile will never hit, u should keep trying
God how I wish the last 2 years we had only r27s and not ers. The meta could have been glorious

That rip speed is going to be a bummer seeing that its a top tier plane and the number of countermeasures kind of WAY lower than a majority of top tier jets that have 6 to 8 AAM and BVR. I don't think actually I Know there's NO way I would spend a chunk of $ of 70 bucks or more on this or any of Gaijin premium vehicles that are 70 bucks its just crazy. So that's because until Gaijin actually gets a REAL EAC that actually catches cheats and does something about them why would I throw 70 bucks down the toilet knowing they STILL HAVE NOT even tried to change
the EAC.
Remember when the EAC first came out it messed the game up even and honestly its junk there are plenty of people that shame cheaters and Gaijin does nothing about them and even cheaters were in the Tournament not to long
ago.
So for ever cheater than does get told on how many do you think are still getting away with cheating. Watching replays there are plenty of script bot program accounts still and never mind aimbot where they shoot from across a whole map at enemy that are on the other side of a hill where they arent even spoted or chevroned but they still get hit or killed so how is the EAC not picking that stuff up. I would gladly pay that much for a vehicle if gaijin fixed this problem. So anyways good video always useful information from Tim's Variety

I think 12.0 is way too high a br for this considering it only has 4 missiles and its a higher br then the f14a... at most it should be 11.3

Being 12.0 doesn’t make it the king of anything, in fact this thing will underperform and the fact it’s up at 12.0 and not 11.7 is crazy same for the f4f not being 12.0/3

@@explosivecommando9100 I think the planes are close to their perfect br’s if the mig 21 gets r77s like irl it’s perfect place, and if the f4 got iris t’s or aim 9l/is it’d be alright but that airframe at 12.7 good missiles or not is not competitive when it’s only edge is something that’s literally the standard now

No, based on playing around on the devserver, I think thats supposed to be related to an order expiring/changing - like a blind hunt or something. I'm not 100% sure though, it was fairly inconsistent.
Can you use the rader mode for ground targets to attack low flying enemy aircraft?
I've never done controlled testing on that specific detail, like out in a custom mission, but in my experience the GTM doesn't pick up helicopters (even when flying around moving) so I'd suspect probably not.

I do have to wonder if this plane is going to be any good, I'm not seeing anything this plane is good at. The 21bis airframe is pretty sad at 12.0 so it's certainly not going to be a great close in dogfighter against 4th gens. The radar missiles are very underwhelming. The R-73s and HMD are good obviously but you don't have a lot, and I'm not convinced that's enough to make up for all the downsides.
Oh well, at least it's not the F-4F ICE.

I'm sure you know this, but you can turn off "join in progress battles" under "options" -> "Common Battle Settings".

Of course it did, gaijin just doesn't want top-tier premiums ti have top-tier missiles...thevsame applies for f20 which carried aim120 missiles

@@-23659 they should have all of their weapons...its not due to a balancing rather due to the fact many vehicles would preform muuuch better with better armament...just like 3bm60 is the least penning sabot on top-tier....rbm70 would be the best or second...amraams would be nice to f20 mig21bison su39 to further make them capable of course with their br going up

I dont not really like the development that virtually a lot of nation getting vehicles from other nations. From my point of view we will get to a point where it doesnt rally matter which nation you are gonna play. If it continues like that it will make to a large extend no difference which nation you chose. I feel it's getting more and more like world of tanks.
