It's pretty amazing how most animation studios or companies cite wanting their films to look like concept art in the early 2000s, (to varying levels of success) and now I feel like it's consistently happening!
It's really great to see such a strong, human fingerprint on modern works of animation. The styles of larger studios are beginning to seriously blend together, and ai has me wondering what the punt is sometimes. Passionate projects like this serve as a beacon of hope and champion for true creativity.
Well said. Films like this are so incredibly inspiring to watch. They have repeatedly made me get up, get to the studio and get to work. If I can make something even 1/1000th as awesome as this, I’ll be happy.
@@marcolopez5828 And then another artist comes and makes something new in turn. Art always comes from somewhere, and has its tropes. AI just follows them but... shittier. It puts all of its tokens in rendering, but the actual image does not really hold up. And AI animation (atleast now) is heavily inconsistent. It seems scary at a first glance, but for me I just don't really understand why people persist it's a threat.
Entergalactic is an incredible project. I hope we see more animation in cell form. The aesthetic is pure dope, from the clothing; to the visuals, and posters/artworks. Great analysis and concept, I hope you create more content with this blueprint.
Love that film. Watched it ) times already and tell each of my friends to check it out. Still shocked that it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar in the Animation department. Great vid.
It couldn’t qualify for an Oscar. It’s a direct to streaming film so it still has a chance to qualify for the Emmys, and I think it has a very good chance at winning.
It’s such a shame this movie isn’t talked about that much It looks beautiful and while the story is simple, the characters and how alive everything feels is what makes this movie special to me And the trip sequences are such a perfect visualization of what Cudi’s music feels like
Man after I finished entergalatic I felt like something was missing one of those pieces where once you finish it you feel like you’ve lost purpose I wish there were more films/shows like entergalatic but I feel like cudis influence really made the film incredible and so did the rest of the team especially the animation team i found myself pausing the movie when the spacey scenes would play almost like I was hypnotized by it’s beauty.
Not only was the movie beautiful and real on relationships, situationships, getting really good advice from friends and staying true to yourself in a creative workplace, the movie had an amazing soundtrack ❤❤
best animated movie ive seen in 10 years. it was heavily slept on by my coworkers, colleagues, and friends. but i kind of want it to stay a hidden gem. ive been studying this movie and the artists who worked on it obsessively since the day i watched it, and i will continue to use it as a foot hold in my creative journey.
Great interview! Solid questions. Robh is one who responds best to a great question. Wonderful observations around animation and art. Thank you for sharing!
Let's not forget Genndy Tartakovsky's contribution to 3D animation. People thought their job was done after making a 3D model. Genndy brought his 2D sensibilities to 3D animation and encouraged them to BREAK the models. HE brought squash and stretch to the rigid world of 3D animation. Nobody had done that before he came along.
Into the spiderverse has such great vibes around it, the artwork is stunning the story was funny and the more I learn how it was created the more impressed I am. edit: Entergalactic look stunning aswell, just never heard of it earlier.
This all looks beautiful, but the choppy movement doesn't work for me. They're trying to imitate 2D animation, but even cheap anime doesn't have distracting framerate slowdowns during dialog.
Oh man, I found this while looking for craft analysis of Entergalactic after I'd finally watched it... now I see you've done a video on Hilda too! Which in my opinion has possibly the best use of colour theory and quantised gradients in any cartoon. (Steven Universe's use of colour is amazing and its pencil-looking landscapes are great, but Hilda's day and night changes take the cake IMO.) Subscribed right away :) I'm going to send this and the Hilda video to my CG and 2D artist pals!
7:05 Quick correction. Spider Verse isn't exclusively rendered on twos. Scenes like the forest swinging scene are shows Peter and Gwen animated on twos with Miles animated on threes to highlight that he's inexperienced. I just thought i would add that, from how this is presented in the video as a new thing Entergalactic did
Entergalactic is such a great movie. I watched it right when it came out and tried recommending it to everyone I could. Visually it’s stunning and its story and music are great too. One of the ultimate comfort movies for me, one you can just put on anytime and enjoy.
This is fucking amazing. Please do more stuff like this with animation gems like this movie (i.e. all of robert valley’s stuff, love death and robots, etc.
Much of what is deemed to be impressive “animation” in this video have either been animation staples of decades (I can’t believe the simplification of background in cities is a point of this video when it’s basic art theory….) . To me this film just utilize the “faking” of the human touch… it ending up not feeling like a comic book because why would yoube adding screen tones to a 3d rendered image…there’s little to no fluidity in the frame rates…it feels like you’re watching video game cut scenes. Animation to accomplish a stylized look of the human hand are old anime’s like FLCL…Tekkonkinkreet and Mthrfckz make both the above example seem lifeless. The Brush look which feels anything but is better accomplished in the French animation LE TABLEAU or for watercolor look Ernest et Celestine. When the video starts with Akira being touted for its animation accomplishments even though the biggest take away as far as technique that sets Akira a part is changing of frame rates coming from a voice I can tell didn’t live through the eras I knew the info here wouldn’t be great…. I mean Rodh is a videogame guy….and the stiffness of that background is all over the lifeness of the film.
really glad I found this video! it inspired me to dig deeper into my artistic pursuits and also get back into animation. Thanks!! I look forward to more content.
I hope the same stylized render will be implemented more in games too, as hardware becomes more powerful photorealistic style seems too bland coz everything looks the same.
I much rather prefer stylized games/movies over realistic, that gets boring and unique. Everything just looks the same when youre stricing for realism as thats very limited
Something about movies that have animation styles like Entergalactic, Nimona and Spider Verse have a vibe to them thatmake me more willing to click on them when deciding what to watch or rewatch Its probably the artist in me deciding because its easier to break down the shapes to draw the characters or gain inspiration from movies like them, whatever the reason, they always have more of a home-like feel to them to me
Oh my GOD! Thank you for this analysis video I am always going to refer back to this video for reference, thank you so much! I loved Robh Ruppel, Simplicity is key.
@@DanielAngArt thank you so much for responding! Same here! i have a habit of over rendering, after this video all i think about is how to simplify. You’ve really helped me change perspectives on my work flow, cant thank you enough!
Thanks for watching! I use a mixture of brushes from other artists like Djamila Knopf and Patrick O'Keefe, but I've got plans to make my own custom pack eventually :)
They really be lazy by going full "animated on 2s" for essentially arbitrary reasons. Like bruh, 24 is bad enough, but 12 without motion blur? Please leave that shit for hand-drawn animation. I want base 30, animated on 2s only sometimes and for stylistic purposes, and with full 1/50th of a second motion blur. I'm not out here trying to have an aneurysm by interpolating missing movement information with my own brain.
I don't understand why they chose this stunning style of animation for a mere mid-romance drama......when there is still so much to explore in this style of animation.
Idk why, but I thought Entergalactic sucked. Sure, it had great visuals, but the story was whack. Kid Cudi being himself in a movie was lame AF lol. Especially all of the weed smoking scenes
Spider Verse broke ground but it doesn’t own the animation style it helped pioneer. There would be no evolution of animation if we didn’t use other pieces of work as inspiration. Plus it’s not even close to be the same movie. One’s a superhero movie and another is basically a romantic comedy.
Hope you enjoy this art analysis! Thanks again to Robh Ruppel for our interview, more to come soon 😄
We’re getting films that look like the concept art we would see in the art books.

@@DanielAngArt it’ll be really cool to see something like Alex Ross’ Kingdom Come as an animated film, and have it look like the comic!
this is exactly right
You summed it up.
right! it’s sad to see concept art of older films that look nowhere near the final product
This movie is beautiful, I took a bunch of screenshots of the scenes. I hope you continue doing more art analysis of movies and animations.

Ai repeats what was made before. Artists take what has been made before and make it into something ai can not: something new.
Until AI learns to replicate the look…

no mention of studio saloon's WolfWalkers??? it's a masterpiece!
Alberto’s DNA is all over this and much of what is considered cutting edge in recent animation. Literally ALL over it.
great movie , great video. could tell u've put a lot of hard work into it. love it ^^
I am more excited about people going the indie route. This way big studios won’t water things down and make it all look the same.
We're finally getting 3d animated shows where the personality in the concept art isn't lost and is actually replicated 1 to 1.
About time.

But why isnt the andre feature on the fucking album 😭 its the best song by leaps and bounds
They legit just copied and pasted the art style from spiderverse
Just started watching this and saw the intro, are you from Perth?
Enter galactic is the same as spider verse except it’s inappropriate.
