    My history teacher in my sophomore year world history class equated the Russo-Japanese war as a varsity team (Japan) going against the freshmen team (Russia).
    Edit: ok so I'm seeing the replies, and thank you to everyone for the correction. It's been awhile since i heard the analogy so I got mixed up on it.

    • @youtoob4life
      @youtoob4life 4 года назад +16

      I don't think that's very accurate. It would imply that the Japanese had experience and prestige on their side, which they didn't. The Japanese war machine had yet to be tested against another large and relatively modern military power, and both sides were testing their capabilities. A more fair analogy would be like Russia being a WW1 era biplane vs Japan being a WW2 fighter plane.

    • @TheDoctorfat
      @TheDoctorfat 4 года назад +9

      @@youtoob4life Yeah, but a Sophmore class isn't really gonna get that analogy, because they don't A: Understand planes that much, and B: the analogy is suppost to help them understand it by equating it to something they know and understand, now, the correct form of the analogy would be Russia being a varsity team and Japan being the freshman team, because it would be just as shocking to see a freshman team beat a more experienced varsity team as it was to see a major European power like Russia being beaten by a "tiny" (according to Europeans) island nation that's only recently modernized.

    Fun fact: Witte was actually granted the title of a count after the peace treaty with Japan and since, according to the treaty, half of the island of Sakhalin was given to Japan while the other half was Russian territory, Witte’s enemies mockingly dubbed him Polusakhalinsky(Half- Sakhalin) to parody beautiful surnames granted to nobles by the monarch.

    Random Nordic fact of the video 1: in Denmark there’s a tower called goose tower, and it got that name because the Hansa declared war on the Danish king at the time, who responded with: 77 chickens and 77 geese doesn’t matter. and then he put up a golden goose on top of the tower. Afterwards there were a couple of wars which has their own weird stories.

You know Russia is a big country and back then was even bigger. And some region went completely rogue , in some areas criminals took power and it was a mess. So Stolypin brought military courts and stabilized that regions. Plus his reforms were great. Thanks to him russia avoided famine. And eventually he became so popular he started overshadow the Tsar , so Nickolas released him from duty

    One thing I was taught about the Russo-Japanese War was that both nations were lucky it was a mostly naval conflict. The Battle of Mukden saw Russian infantry Ura charge into Japanese Hotchkiss guns and Japanese infantry Banzai charge into Russian Maxim guns. Most foreign observers noted the butchery of such attacks and how it wasn't proper European battle etiquette. The German observers noted the effectiveness of machine guns against infantry and cavalry in the open...

    So Alexei haemophilia was likely worsened by his mum. She had extreme anxiety, but Rasputin helped her a lot. Nicholas once said something like 'it's better to have one rasputin, then for Alexandra to have another of her moments'. So rasputin calming Alexandra, likely stopped her from making Alexei panic and worry, which would've raised his blood pressure. Add the fact that the doctors were giving him aspirin, which has a side effect of being a blood thinner, amd its probably safe to say he only had a mild case of haemophilia, but everything around him made it worse

    What Nicholas II should have done (in my opinion):
    - Instituted a bunch of labor laws that benefitted the poor and rich
    - Make sure taxes were lower for the industrial sector than the agricultural sector, so that Russia would start its industrial revolution
    - Make the monarchy constitutional and set up a parliament so that the workers would be able to make sure the country was ran well
    There might be more, but that might have saved Russia

    Aspirin is used for pain, inflammation and fever but it is also and anticoagulant and would have made the boys conditions much worse considering he suffered from hemophilia (difficulty to coagulate blood and stop bleeding).

    I know that channel is called literally Oversimplified, but for myself and to fight "ignorantism" about Imperial Russia and Nicholas II, i must write this:
    Look at what Nicholas II did for Russia..:
    Expanding education (was halted because of WWI)
    Signing the October Manifesto
    Modernized the navy and army after the war with japan
    Gave workers rights
    Instated the Duma (which was not entirely toothless and nicholas only dissolved it when it tried to change the system)
    Saw incredible growth of grain, iron and coal production
    Improved infrastructure specifcally adding electric trams to major cities
    The Russian Empire of the new 20th century was not backwater and many pro-soviets guys or just ignorant (no offences) people considers it like this, and Late Imperial Russia was always predicted to become a global power by numerous economists. Just a few examples of how backwards the Russian emprie was in 1888 St Peter's became the first city to use electric trams rather than cable or gas trams and by 1916 all major cities had intricate functioning tram systems. Russia also produced more grain than Argentina, the US and Canada combined. Russia was industrializing faster than the US at the time. It had the 4th biggest economy in Europe behind the UK, Austria Hungary and sometimes France who they would go back and forth with over the 19th century. Russia had a submarine fleet and airforce and a russian pilot was the first ever to take down an enemy aircraft in combat. Nicholas granted workers insurance and limited work hours something most of europe wouldnt touch until the 30s. By 1917 literacy in the Empire was 80 percent circa and the soviets actually furthered Nicholas' programs. History is not on the Soviet's side. The human cost was not worth it and please explain how those rockets and sending a guy to space helped the common people of Russia?
    As great as the space race was for technological growth it happened because of the cold war and the constant threat of nuclear warfare. To the average person they benefited shit from it
    Russia was always behind and a real backwater during the soviet era, neutrally and unpolitically speeking, because of the inefficiencies. During WW2 the USSR army used outdated equipment and poorly trained conscripts but because Stalin could spare 24 million men and that is what won the war.
    Disclaimer for the people that says "nIcHoLaS WaS A TyRaNt bLoOd-wAnTeD, hE DiD'T CaReD AbOuT ThE PeOpLe11!!!"
    Tbh, the soviets did. Just to start, Nicholas and family, even if the most living richest family, lived really in a humble and simple way. The daughters of Nicholas II hated beging adressed with their titles and et cetera, the older two daughters and the Empres made active nursing service for the wounded souldiers, meanwhile the little daughters made charity works. They really loved visited their people, like a farm that was close to the Imperial trainstation of Mogilev (The russian army HQ). Even duing their captivity, all the family wrote in their letters to dear ones and in their diaries that they didn't dislike their new life, and that they were pretty happy. About Rasputin, try to let your wife see her only son dying unable to find any medic to cure your loved son, who was the center of Nicholas' family...

    I find Lenin to be a bit of a complex character. Yes he showed he could be a brutal dictator, but he also put forward policies that generally helped people, gave liberties to minorities and so on.
    Do I think he would have been a brutal dictator like Stalin? No.
    Do I think he would have been just a brutal dictator? Maybe.
    Do I think he would have helped his people? Possibly.
    The fact is he died before we could really see what kind of leader he would be in 'peace time'. We know what he was like when leading the Revolution, we know what he was like when fighting the Civil War. We know he was very dedicated to his ideals. Maybe he would have been a good leader, possibly a brutal leader. But we will never really know because he died before he could really shape his ideals into reality and gave way to Stalin to rise.
    I remember reading about Lenin's exile to Siberia. Apparently he actually found it one of the best times in his life, fresh country air, free time to focus on ironing out his ideals, and a good place to find like-minded comrades, it wasn't even that good of a prison, Stalin alone escaped like 3-4 times. At the same time the labor camps for exiles seemed to inspire the gulags under the USSR, which shouldn't be surprising as many of the Bolshevik leaders had a good amount of experience in them.

      Bertrand Russels conversation with Lenin is pretty telling of what kind of man he was, check it out. Besides, Lenin and the bolsjeviks imprisoned and murdered political opponents by the thousands and eventually by the hundreds of thousands. I agree in that, in spite of all the thuggery of bolsjevism, i dont think he would have ended up nearly as murderous as Stalin, since he also considered Stalin to much of a brute, but Lenin was a dictator nonetheless responsible for the killing of many.
