- Remove the white background on your drawing and make it transparent, so you can paint it below the line. Note: For five years this video's music was Dragon Ball's Namek tune. But since I got a copyright infringement notice I had to change it. I'm sad. Very sad.
Hello! If you found this video useful, please tip me with the $uper Thanks button. This will be much appreciated!
lol
to this day your tutorial is to the pioj t and effective, others are cunfusing as fuck
I don't even care if this doesn't give me the end result I needed. This tutorial was hilarious with the extravagant music and text.
7 years later, this video is still useful. Thank you legend.
You can simply choose Select --> Color Range --> White --> Inverse -->Copy --> Paste --> Delete background....
Color range doesn't work so accurate with inkings you have scanned. This is much better
I dont know what you just told me to do but it totally works. lol 10 seconds flat.
Yo this is absolutely big brain, thanks!
This worked, shoutouts!
How do you cop on imac
please never delete this vid its been a life saver for about 2 years for me, i always come back to it.
I won't!
select all
edit,copy
create new layer
delete original layer drawing
paint black-add a mask
ALT+ click on mask
edit,paste
image,adjustments,invert
click on layer
click on mask
delete mask
done!
You forgot to add: brush your teeth 😁
I've come here like 10x because I always forget and know this is the best tutorial on it
i'm here like once a month. it's the best!
hahahahahaha
hahaha really happy to hear this! I'm glad this helps! :)
now I understand why this vid has so many views...
X)
*****Easier way!!!!! Go to select, then color range, and select the color you want to delete with the eyedropper select ok and delete it.
using that way the result is not 100% perfect
...but it saved me a ton of effort. Thank you! Perfectly fit m purposes!
thank you Adam!! Best method!! fit my purpose too.
Soma Szebellédi welcome :)
Juda Holanda welcome :)
I love how the people on RUclips teach me things, years after having posted their videos! This helped me do what I wanted to do. To the point tutorial. Thank you
I come back to this alllllll the time as a graphic designer lmao This is my all time favorite video ever
I managed to do this by copying an image into Microsoft word, saving it as a PDF, and then opening the PDF into Photoshop. The white background is automatically transparent. I was blown away. This opened so many avenues for me.
You have no idea of the things I was doing before I realised this was possible
not only easy, the best of this is that it works perfect! :)
You can try this Photoshop action for really quick results
www.photoshopsupply.com/actions/remove-white-background-photoshop
Same here, being Photoshop user since about 15 years now and never thought about this methode, very smart use of mask thanks (y)
I'm afraid to find out.
Holy crap ! Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve been watching videos for an effing hour trying to figure out what you’ve done in like 30 seconds. I thank you sincerely. Love from Pennsylvania xo

Thank you for explaining it clearly 👍👍
I come back here every like 2 weeks and the music always keeps me hyped
Finally, a REAL tutorial and not some bullsh*t guide telling me that I can use the magic wand and cut out the white parts (yeah, sure, I would never have thought about that). Thank you very, very much and thumbs up!
Great song choice. Fantastic message. Outstanding tips. Triple A ! Thanks Joel x
Hahahah Thanks for the triple A!! X))
Is there a trick to pasting it into the mask? Mine won't paste, it makes a new layer with the picture.
Thank you 7 years later. Still useful. Honestly Adobe should make this a simpler process by now but at least we have youtube gurus to help us.
Loved the music and thanks for the perfect tutorial.
I've been dying to learn this trick and I didn't know that it was this easy. Give this guy a million views!
This video has helped me more than you will ever know.
Thanks a lot for the donation! ✊✨
dude you're my savior, I accidentally merge my lineart with base color, thankfully the color not in full opacity, this method saves me from crying
Ahh, Thanks dude! Best tutorial on this by far. I will brush my teeth this night honouring you!
Awesome, thank you, finally I found your video, I've been digging though magic wand tutorials for longer than I wanted to.
we should set the magic wands on fire..
It works perfectly and saves a lot of time. I recorded an Action (Alt+F9) incorporating all the steps here and now with a single keystroke it removes all the white in about one second.
clever.
Gimme the actiooon pls HAHAHAHA
Awesome!! The shortest video of removing white color, and it´s all we need to make the job ... and the music rock it!!!
For anyone watching that ended up with a transparent image: before you do everything else in the video, apply a brightness and contrast and crank the contrast. In my case, what I thought was black was really a slight gradient, so this made it work properly. In some instances it's required me to add max contrast, merge the layers, then repeat several times.
Thank you for this, it took out the paper texture as well.
this is the best. no beating around the bush narration. straight to the point video.
THANK YOU FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I LOVE PEOPLE WHO GO STRAIGHT TO THE POINT SO THANK YOU AGAIN MY GUY!
The easiest to follow and straight to the point tutorial I've seen yet. Thanks!
Thanks a lot! Thumb up for the Dragon Ball Z theme :D
yes! big love to dragon ball! hahaha ;)
Previously on Dragon Ball!
Dude! God bless you! You don't know how many times I've wanted to do this and couldn't figure it out. Thank you! Saving this vid for sure.
sure, it's an useful trick! you're welcome :)
Very cool approach! Thanks man!
Omg
I do a lot of inking and making every single damn part of my drawings transparent takes hours.
DUDE YOU HAVE SHOWN ME THE LIGHT
THX A LOT!
I'm happy that this helped you! thanks for your comment :)
YOU ARE AN ANGEL! Thank you for creating this EASY to follow video. You just saved me hours of time. I love you and don't even know you!
YOU DA BEST!!!! that brush your teeth . part was so on point. had me smiling ear to ear.
Saved. my. ass. The video IS as heroic as the music. Thank you!
That was amazing, and that background music was perfect for your great job, just matched everything.👍👍
I got to this video multiple times a year. I got weirded out cause the background music was very different from what it was before.
yes, I am super sad about this. I got a copyright claim from Namek and I had to change it.
haha me too!! i always come back.
who knows? Is it possible to make text editable after I Adjusted Brightness/contract and saved the project, because now the text I added is merged with picture (single layer)? I need to make changes to the text.
made my picture black and white :(
Thank you!!!! Masks are pretty mysterious to me, but I didn't have to understand it to follow your tutorial. Great Job!
there's no mystery at all. spend 10min to figure out how they work and you won't be able to stop using them. these are really useful! :)
or: select-- colour range-- pick white (it only selects it) go to edit-- cut, and you're done
you just helped me out, appreciate you brotha
Thanks bro, legend!
Me: There must be a quicker and easier way
*looking at comments*
Luca Szabó: I got u
sure, if you select #FFFFFF, with a fuzziness of 0, it'll only pick out #FFFFFF, and leave #FFFFFE and give you all sorts of fuzzies you didn't want... but set it to a fuzziness of 10 and it starts eating your pinks and yellows, too.
this also leaves out some parts that are still white tho
Excellent tutorial. Short, clear, and to the point!
this was the idea! :) thanks for commenting!
I feel like half the clicks this video got is me coming back every few weeks because I repeatedly forget how this works lmao
Me too but then I recorded this as an 'Action' in PS, which has helped.
Perfect, short and to the point. Exactly what we need. Thanks man
This worked perfectly with removing all the white from a halftone image, thanks!
yes I always use it on halftones when preparing artwork to be screen printed. works like charm :)
I was about to go crazy from this useless videos on youtube till I found exactly what ive been looking for thanks to you. You helped me more than you can imagine!!! Thank you so much!!!
thank u so much!
but what if the logo is colored?
when i tried it, it makes it only black and white
any tutorial or something could help??
Does the logo have a black line? If so, you could easily separate the line and then recolor it manually. First, turn the image to grayscale (Image, Mode, Grayscale). Then, use curves to get the black line on white background (Image, Adjustments, Curves) - Normally joining both ends around to the middle works fine, quite tricky but doable. Next follow the steps on the video. And finally recolor it. But it all depends on the logo! I use this a lot when I have to use logos sent to me as shitty low-res jpgs and works like charm.
Great it is, but it's not working with color images.
Obviously. This video is about seperating white from black.
This is the best method for removing white background from black and white line art. Thank you. It also works in Procreate on the iPad with some adjustments.
Thank you for epic music!
dragon ball rules. always.
Thank you very much, today wasn't the first time I used your video to do this. I had forggoten how to do it, but remembered I liked the video with the skeleton. That helped me find you again and again, and ...again!!!! THANK YOU!!!
only working with black-white painting. Too bad
Thank you very much, been using photoshop for 10 years and never heard of this way, BAD TO THE BONE
Straight to the point, thanks!
For anyone reading, you can turn this into an action and bind it, so you only have to press one button in order to do it again. Look up actions in photoshop.
But how to main the quality of the color. It makes it black
thank you AGAIN I have used your video more than you can imagine, I have the memory of a goldfish so I can't remember the steps!
Apple: Steps by key stroke: ⌘A, ⌘C, New Layer, Delete Background, ⌥⌫(delete), add layer mask, ⌥click mask, ⌘V, Image>adjustments>invert, click on layer, delete layer.
prolly don't care but u just made my day bro thanks so much
@@hannesdraws5989 invert = ⌘I
OMG, sat through too many lengthy vid's on how to do this... this is by far the best/easiest/"you-rule". Mega-Pixel's to you my friend!!
no bullshit! ;)
This video need more view xD Thank you! So simple and straight to the point.
tell youtube! hahaha ;)
You're an actual saint for this. You'll probably never see this, but thank you. ;o;
I did ;)
It works only if you have black&white image. For colour photo result has no background and no colors.
Damn, you're insane. I was curious at first, but when I followed it step by step, and boom... It's done in 1 minute
Perfect! Short and no bullshit, thanks for the video.
Thank you so much, very straightforward and easy to follow unlike so many other tutorials I've found for this, really appreciated
making logos at 1;30am , thank you, i will brush my teeth.
This worked amazingly with sketches with different saturations, thank you so much!!!
this is my favorite video on youtube
this is my favourite comment on youtube ;)
Fast, effective and fun tutorial! Much appreciated!
At 1:08, you apply the layer mask. Don't delete as the instructions read.
LOL thank you I kept messing it up. thought I was dumb as hell
Applied all the steps you showed in the video and it worked for me. Thanks man!
You are welcome! :)
This so uselessly complicated lol.
Double click on the layer > drag the white part of the first slider closer to black > holding alt, drag half of the white part to adjust feathering > convert to smart object > rasterize.
Or use the background removal tool, if you re using cc 2020 (this tutorial is 5 years old, photoshop has come a longgg long way since then)
Or use the replace color from image- adjustments- replace color
Or set the fucking layer to multiply....
This tutorial was really helpful!
The music sounds like if you were in a secret mission!
But the most important thing is...
It reminds you to brush your teeth XD
Thank u so much for this awesome tutorial 👍😁
It’s from dbz..
This solved so many problems for me! Thank you :D
Great! You are welcome! :)
Holy shit im glad i found this. Using the magic wand sucks cause it leaves a white around the lineart and its a pain to try and get rid of without messing with the original lines.
Yep. Magic wand isn't the best option to remove the whites from linework. This method gets rid of all whites without altering the blacks! ;)
Ill start brushing my teeth now thanks!!
I have been searching for days for a video I could understand and one that worked for removing the background from my line art image. Today I found it! Thanks so much for this easy to follow video!
best tuto ever
This is a brilliant micro-video with hilarious music, and the technique is perfect. Viewers: ignore the 'easy' way from Adam Rich. That only works for posterized black and white, not for general, grayscale images. The technique shown here is just right.
176 people can't use PS. Thanks for this tutorial!
hahhaha X))
I love this video. Basically I wanted to remove BLACK background and make it transparent. What I did was basically what this video says, however I inverted my image color before and at the end I inverted again.
YES THIS WAS SO MUCH HELP
is it only for black and white images?
You can add colored images, but they will turn into black and white with grey tones for the color, wich will be semi transparent then.
You can add a colorful gradient in the mask, but it will just be greytones then, depending on the color more or less transparent in the real layer color.
Simple, fast and paired with a catchy tune. Thanks for making life 10 thousand times easier!
Go to select, then color range, and select the color you want to delete with the eyedropper select okay and delete it (Its wayy easier)
the result is not as good then.
This one helped me thanks!
All tutorials are now required to have awesome music like this.
does this method work with inkings including colour?? thanks!
lol, I am asking same question 21 hours after you, 6 years after the video has been uploaded
I'm asking the same question
@@huanmai306 you can just click on the layer, go to "select" on top of the screen, then selecet "subject" or "color range" depends what works for you better and tap delete on keyboard. Very eazy
Only linework. This converts gray scale values to opacity values.
You really saved my life! I had this lineart I forgot to save with a transparent background and lost the original file, so I was going nuts cuz I'm doing a collab and had to send to the person who's doing the coloring. hahaha
Thank you so much, you really saved me!
Great video, very useful and to the point. Cheers!
WOW!!! THIS SAVED ME TONS OF TIME. I WAS TRYING TO MAGIC WAND EVERYTHING!
THANK YOU!
magic wand is shit. X)
not what I was looking for but atleast it didnt take me 14 minutes to realise that like with other vidoes, anyway guess I cant avoid using the magic wand :(
It says "remove white background", what were you looking for?
lol
Wasn't really what I was looking for either but I still got off.
HAhahaha, I came across that 14 minute video too.
More exciting than the explosion of namek episodes!
Hahahah you got it ;)
Dragon ball yeah!
The easiest to comprehend, thank you. I wish I had found your video first! :)
straight to the point! ;)
Why does my picture turn to a different color as soon as i paste the picture?
T__T i can't even paste the picture into the mask area. it won't let me. i have no idea why.
Mind blown. Worked perfectly, and Kikuchi's classic dbz music made it all better. Thanks man!
it seriously will not let me PASTE into the mask. i don't know why.
I was having this problem too but I've realized that I didn't selected all page before copying. Use Ctrl + A then Ctrl + C. After this it worked for me, I hope this helps!
@@xungas123 Nope for me it keeps creating a new layer when I try to paste it into the mask.
Edit: Never mind, I had to push the "option" key on my mac while selecting the mask.
@@facopse @chronicler9 it's because you must hold alt (for mac - not sure if exactly the same for windows) whilst clicking the layer in order to enter the mask.
exactly what I was looking for, and in less steps than some other places online. Thanks!
I used the menus to explain it better. using shortcuts it's even faster!
Does not work for colour images?
THANKS SO MUCH! even though you did this 3 years ago, it's helping me with a job! Thank you :D
