Saw them in '78 opening for the Ramones. They were one of my favorite bands, and my girlfriend's favorite. We were there to see The Runaways. Had only heard the Ramones' "Rocket To Russia" album and were still trying to digest the whole punk scene at the time. Got backstage after the show and got a great kiss from Sandy! My girlfrind wasn't even jealous; She wished SHE could've kissed her! A kick ass concert which also turned me into a huge Ramones fan! RIP, Sandy. Love ya!
The movie is what did it for Me, I didn't even know who The Runaways were until I watched the movie last week on Netflix. Now I'm a Runaways Super Freak. I love this band, and I'm 57...lol. Pretty fucked up. Although, back in the mid-70s, I wasn't listening to this kinda stuff. I was in Junior High, or thereabouts, and I was more into 10CC, Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, Eagles, & some old-time Rockabilly Stuff & The Beatles...Back in their Sweet Georgia Brown Days, before Ringo, when Pete Best was the Drummer & Tony Sheridan was singing for the band ( ruclips.net/video/YKLYr3nAsZg/видео.html ). But, Joan Jett & Cherrie Bomb.....back in the mid-70s.....YUM!!!!!
@dave freeman And neither do you know shit, but I'm sure you know how to be an asshole! You don't tell me what to say or how to say it, I said shred and I will continue to say it, so STFU talking to me! Misogynistic son of a bitch!
Remembering how my Mom flipped when I was singing to this , Cherry Bomb and You Drive Me Wild and I was only 13... That cassette disappeared shortly thereafter...lol (My friend made a bootleg replacement)
Melissa DeFalco Menge: great story! I remember our band taking a break when Cheery Bomb came over the radio. Id never heard it before. My pal Keith said LISTEN! I was laughing so hard it was tuff to come up for air. I was hooked! Still am;)
I had a video of ,my three year old dancing to Cherry Bomb in 2012 with Dakota Fanning on FB. One of my relatives flipped out. I explained she just liked the music, and had no idea what it meant.
I saw them do this song live at a small hall in Canton, OH back in the day. They were amazing and they acted this song out down Lita "gunning down" Cherie with a fierce guitar solo. Blood packs exploded and the roadies came out a carried Cheri offstage. Saw them one more time before the band broke up. Those were some good rock and roll days!
Very well done! Jackie on her Runaways blog wondered if anyone had a film of them performing this song, with her and Lita playing the prison guards, beating up Cherie while she spit up stage blood. This is probably the closest we'll ever come to it.
such a bummer that there are no recorded live performances of this song on youtube. i cant imagine how killer cherie and joan were performing this song live.
Sandy West, tremendous drummer. She and Lita Ford were the more "metal/hard rock"oriented members of the band, and IF the band hadn't imploded and they could have been more influential in the writing, who knows? The Runaways may have gone in a very different direction musically.
It was a great shame they couldn’t just blend the hard rock metal & Glam Punk together, they would’ve surely got even greater recognition & success that they deserved. 1980’s would’ve lapped them up! But they were up against so many odds it’s absolutely astounding what they did in that time alone!
My favorite part: In the naked city Spaces ain’t that pretty As I was getting dusted I happened to get busted Oh yes I was arrested Oh God how I protested They beat me with a board It hurt just like a sword They kicked me in the eye My brain began to fry This is like a movie I know I’m gonna scream All the pain that I feel Makes me feel mean It’s so sad and crazy here I think I’m gonna cry If I don’t wake up from this dream I think I’m gonna........¡DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! xD
@Coy Leigh but they birthed two of the most iconic female leads of the 80s and early 90s... not to mention, most of them discount the band because they were teenagers and as such the themes and ideas they sang about were based on such as well. They’ve even said they wouldn’t have lasted because they were teenage “runaways”. It wasn’t meant to last, but was meant to be decent while it did.
Pretty neat hearing this song in season 2 of Stranger Things, legit grinned like an idiot when I heard it aha. Great soundtrack this year and hopefully, it will get new folk interested enough to check out their other songs.
I've always loved the Runaways, specially joan jett and it's been a long time since I'm listening to them, I'm glad more people will know them thanks to the film :)
My Dearest Jett L7, I can see by your generous decision to post the 'Holy Grail' of vintage Runaways videos. The jewel in the veritable 'Crown' if you will. 'Dead end Justice'. I am moved beyond words. Thank you! You are the fucking Man!

Really GREAT montage ! Like suzylux, a lot of this footage & some of the stills were fresh ones for me. Also, until I read Jackie's blog regarding this song, I did not know that the group did a little 'play' and acting out when performing this song. Your still images of Cherie on the ground after the ' beat-down ' and the photos of her ' blood ' covered clothes are priceless. Rare stuff Indeed ! Thanks so much for this post and the work you put into it. Kudos !!!

A totally underrated rock band
Mark Soquet, Jr completely agree!!! Some of those guitar solos are sick and she’s only 16!!! She plays better than some grown men
I think the Runaways are more popular now than they were in the day.
Yea they got a movie
Strange situation : VERY good and VERY unknown group
they don't make'em like this any more...xxxx

@Coy Leigh So... you think “Gucci Gang” has better lyrics?
They actually sing and play really well. No pitch issues, drummer's beat is spot on. Good songwriting too and killer guitar riffs. Give them credit.
This was Girl Power when the Spice Girls were still shitting their nappies.
I loved their songs in my youth, and now I get to enjoy it again in my youngest son's youth
The runaways still sound good in 2013.....Joan is a rock GODDESS!
God Bless the 70's!!!!!
